914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 74 914 to sell

Posted by: mckeedad6 Sep 16 2015, 02:53 PM

Hi Guys new to forum and 914s. My uncle has a 74 1.8 car that was restored about 20 or so years ago. In my opinion it is in super nice shape for such a old car. he didnt drive it much since it was done and he always kept it covered in his garage. It has been in AZ for the last 15 years. I am replacing the fuel pump and someone put it up by the rack. My question is should i put it back in its original spot or leave it up front. Just want to make it most desirable to sell for you collectors and 914 lovers. BTW I would LOVE to keep it but I am 6.5 and I can hardly get in and out of it. I cant even put my head up if the top is on. Therefore I'd like to see it go to someone who will enjoy it. Thanks for any help. Sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I can move If you let me know.

No - keep that fuel pump up front, as that was where the factory service/tech bulletin says to relocate them from the engine bay, in order to prevent heat induced vapor lock of the pump/lines.

I used to have a pic of Kareem Abdul Jabbar driving a 914 & he's got a few inches on you! So it's not impossible, but may just be a sunny day top off cruiser for you - if you were to keep it & enjoy it - which you would!

Maybe try it awhile on sunny days with the top off, go to a few local Porsche Club (PCA) events, etc. & see if you like your Dad's entry into the Porsche world! driving.gif

Good Luck either way! beerchug.gif

Either you are 6 foot 5 inches and can take the seat cushion out, or you are 6.5 years old and should add a seat cushion...

There is a classified section, but one of the admins might see your post and move it for you. You will need to include a price in the ad.

I agree, pull the seat cushion out and get another one, and cut down the foam a bit confused24.gif

What other way is there to drive a 914??!!

Drive in the rain? No.
Drive on a sunny day with the top on? No.
Drive on a sunny day with the top off? YES!!!!

Thanks guys for the response. I will try the seat cushion removed and Ill keep the pump up front. I didn't put it in classifieds because I want to get it running and make sure all is good with it. Really just wondered about the fuel pump. The three nipple one is pretty much obsolete from what I read so I I think am going to go with the Bosh from a 75 and later car. I will get more pics this weekend to post on here for you guys. Thanks Attached Image Attached Image

My uncle put tape on the bottom seat cushions to cover a tear. The seats look good under the tape so I think I am going to see if I can find someone to sew them up.

Just curious if you've tried to adjust the seat by lowering the front angle (with the lever on the left side) and sliding it back all the way (with the handle under the right side)?

Posted by: mckeedad6 Sep 17 2015, 12:50 PM

Tried moving it. It goes down in the front but I think it might be all the way back. I am still trying to figure out how things work on the car and I dont want to break anything by forcing it.

Not sure what they are. My uncle bought them for it. I know he paid close to $900 for them though.

Well I found the rust. Ill put pics on when I figure out how to get them off my phone/ It is in the rear trunk at the very rear. My next question for you guys is if I should fix it or let the new owner. Sorry I just don't fit in it, These are cars that should be enjoyed and it's just not comfortable for me. That being said is it worth it to fix or will not get my money out of the repair. Rest of car is clean. Maybe super clean by 914 standards from what I've been reading. Ill put pics on in AM

I prefer to slide the seat forward a few clicks and then recline it back. Much more comfortable reclining than sitting straight up when driving, and it gives you some more headroom. It's even nicer if you have a smaller steering wheel, like a MOMO or something. I'm 6'1" and it leaves me a lot of headroom.

Not sure what to ask. Don't want to give it away. but not trying to gouge someone either. I think I will put it in clasifieds but I want to get a lot of good pics and cant do that till Sat. Only rust I found was in the rear trunk, I wire wheeled it and there are some holes but all in all looks a lot better than a lot I've seen. I'll always entertain any fair offer though.

I've tried several ways just cant seem to get comfortable. Has original steering wheel and my knee hits when shifting. It really sucks but I think I have to let it go. It really needs to be drove and enjoyed. It will make someone very happy. It reali seems super nice to me. But hey I;m a 914 newbie and cant even fit in it.

Maybe a member close to you could come take a look and help you assess the car and give you a better ballpark value confused24.gif

That would be great if anyone is interested in doing that. I took pics of all suspect areas but my phone camera sucks so I am using a regular camera this weekend. The trunk there is the only bad spot on it. I think everything else was repaired or replaced in 95. I have receipt that I will post in ad when I post it to sell. probably sometime next week. I sure appreciate all your input/help.

I have a twin of your car.
The brown interior is rare and fixing those seats it's going to be difficult. In fact, rust and interior are the most expensive repairs. This will determine the selling price.
All the mechanical issues are easy and cheap to deal with.
If you're going for originality, then the wheels and exhaust will need to go.

I'm not concerned with originality my self. I was hoping to drive and enjoy it. But alias I am just to big. I'm going to sell it so someone can enjoy it. i am enjoying tinkering with it so I want to get it as nice as I can without to much time and effort.

If the trunk is the worst rust in the car, then it's a great starting point for someone. If it's running the price goes up dramatically

It runs and drives great. well will again when I replace fuel pump. Trunk is only bad spot rest is really good and solid. motor was completely gone through and fairly low miles on clutch. It went through a semi restoration in 94 at SADCO in LaPlume PA.

Here are pics. Lets say the Before pics. they are just as I got the car. It will be cleaned up and in top running condition when I get ready to sell it.

Well guys I have the car running and it runs great. Drove it around a little and it shifts good. trans seems nice and tight didn't feel any slop in the shiftier and goes through all gears as it should. It was fun to drive but I'm too big for it. I am going to put it in the classified section and see what happens. Thanks for all the help and info you guys have given. You are a great bunch of guys. Special thanks to Harpo for coming out and checking it out for me. Going to leave trunk for new owner. If it don't sell I will fix it later. Thanks again guys.

Sorry it didn't work out for you because these are a lot of fun. In any event, one doesn't necessarily NEED to have a 914 to be a part of the group here. Many of us have them, but they're on jack stands a lot, so it's almost like not having one anyway poke.gif

Maybe a Boxter might be a better fit? ... it's just a more modern 914 ... idea.gif

I am going to stay connected to the forum. I may look for other 914 to tinker on. It has been fun tinkering on this one and it is a blast to drive. driving.gif It is just very impractical for my size. Ya never know if my uncle doesn't get what he wants maybe I'll have it around for a while and loose some weight and I'll fit a little better. Ya never know. I do love this forum and all the info it provides.

Sounds like you may be coming down with the sickness. Yes these cars are fun. Depending on where you are at with this you may want to wait til spring to sell it. It should fetch a better price, like motorcycles. That and they aren't making any more of them biggrin.gif

Yea at this point I am waiting for a part for the door handle then I can put door pad on and list it. I gotta show my uncle I'm trying to move it for him. I guess i'll see what happens. If I have to store it all winter I'll definitely fix the trunk issue for the next owner.

Ok guys this car is driving me nuts. I Love driving it. I'm still big for it but I'm learning to fit in it. I'm trying to talk my uncle into keeping it but he seems determined to sell it and I just don't have the cash to buy it from him. At this point I think I might have to sit on it till spring. He is thinking $10,000 but I don't know how realistic that is. Harpo looked at it and thought that might be high. Any thoughts from you guys is appreciated. Maybe some arguments for me to use on why he should keep it and just let me have it.

Posted by: iwanta914-6 Oct 26 2015, 12:24 PM

The only way to know how realistic $10k is, is to list it at $10k (or higher) and see if anyone bites or makes an offer near that. Personally, looking at the pictures, I don't see it being a $10K car but prices seem to be all over the map with clean cars going for $20K+.

Maybe if he doesn't get any offers close to $10K, he'll consider dropping the price to something that you can afford or allow you to make payments to him.

I will tell you, I regret not buying my Dad's 951 when he offered it to me for $10K...

Posted by: mgp4591 Oct 27 2015, 02:03 AM

I'd say talk your uncle into keeping it for you and make payments if he'll do that, then park it and use it for inspiration to meet your health goals! Hell, ladies put pictures of dresses and all kinds of stuff on their refrigerators as a goal keeper- why not a 914 for you?! shades.gif

Posted by: mckeedad6 Oct 28 2015, 08:22 AM

Ok guys. Here is the deal. Talked to my uncle yesterday and dosent sound like he is really wanting to sell it that bad. Soooo I made a deal with him for the short term anyway. I am going to slowly restore the car and plate and insure it. he comes to Michigan once or twice a year in the summer so I will keep it here and keep it running and driving and he can drive it whenever he comes up. He figured he dosent really need the money. His bigest problem was storing it and he has no place to tinker with it, Gotta love HOAs, So looks like I will be keeping it for a while. piratenanner.gif

That,s a great Idea I am going to do that. Especially now that I am able to keep the car around.
