The above points are the points earned in Round 1 by each Challenger/Build. Points accumulated after all 4 rounds will be added together to determine the final winner. The calculation of the points accumulated in Round 1 is the total points in the 3 Challenger questions (30 total points possible (10 points each)), weighted by the type of build. Then the result is weighted by 75%, and added to the 914world poll results which is weighted by 25%. The resulting total points is reflected above.

Let the builds begin.
Over the next couple of days we will a post a short description of each car, build, and the primary aspects of the project, in this post.
Codes sent to all on the challenge -Good luck to all!
Heh - I read the thread title, "Save the 914 Build-Off Challenge," as if the event were about to be canceled...
Nothing to see here, people. Move along...

Let's eat, Grandma!
(Punctuation kills.)
You could color code each of the build threads green (like this one is). It would help us follow their progress.
I don't write much because I don't have a lot to add, but -- geez -- this was a good idea. I'm really enjoying following all the builds. My only issue: I'm rooting for them all to win .....
Thank you to Stevegm for setting this up and thank you to Mikey914 for sponsoring it!
Big KUDO'S to Steve and Mikey914!!!
Steve,
You have so much energy to take on all the work and details to make this thing go.
Bottom line is that a lot of 914's will move forward, going to be fun to watch things emerge as there are always some people that are so talented and just need a little push to make them flourish.
Here we go!!
Thanks Steve & Mark!!!
Vysoc
rick 918-S, from Area51 Werks Welding, has donated this awesome welding jacket to the build that drops out first. It makes me wish I had entered by car.
Thank you Rick.

What a fantastic thread.. I cannot wait to read about all the progress!
Im out
Love the jacket, would hate to get slag and embers on it.
No I'm not out...... That would be way to easy.
And way to the Ohio contingent
Steve, I like the logo
Anyone thinking of doing t shirts?
I would be in for 1
CHALLENGERS:
A lot of great work happening on these cars.
If you haven't sent me a picture of you with your car, please email it to me. We are also in the process of doing profiles of each build and need all of your info, if you haven't set it yet. You can check out the Build Profiles (as they get one and posted) - http://fourteenermotoring.com/category/events/2016-save-the-914-build-off-challenge/2016-build-off-challenge-build-profiles/
Challengers are required to post an update at least once per month, explaining what they did that month. But, you are free to post them more frequently - weekly, etc. It is up to you. When you do post an update, it would probably be helpful to post a list of what you did, and then the pictures of the work.
A couple people have asked about vendor discounts. Here is what we have right now:
914rubber - 20% off of all parts (Mark sent a code to Challengers).
Automobile Atlanta - 15% on "B" parts (rebuilt parts and ones they make).
Jeff's 914 Wiring Harnesses - Challengers receive a 15% discount for any replacement 914 Wiring Harness on the website for the build car (All orders much be placed by December 31, 2015.
Documenting your build is a very important aspect of the Challenge, and there will be substantial bonuses available, based on the level of documentation. Here are some ideas:
1. Photographs of the work as it progresses.
2. Receipts (although not required for the Challenge, very helpful for other 914 owners doing work on their cars.
3. Written explanations of the steps taken to complete work.
4. How-to style stuff - photos and step-by-step instructions to complete work.
5. Video - if your interested in shooting some video we can help accommodate making that available. Just let me know.
May I suggest including the year in the title/logo "914 Build-Off Challenge 2016 " or similar? I think you have started something here Steve that will not be a one time event. Kudos to you for the encouragement and friendly competition idea.
Given any thought to holding an event to present the Challenge cars and awards?
It is my pleasure to announce that 914 Build-Off Challenge participants are offered a 15% discount from Jeffs 914 Wiring Harnesses for any Replacement 914 Wiring Harness on the website for the build car. All orders for Challenge cars must be placed by December 31, 2015 to receive the discount. Best to each of you, looking forward to seeing the results of your efforts. Individually you are all winners for accepting the Challenge.

Two people emailed me this week and asked to be added to the list of Challengers after the deadline. After talking it over, we decided that given the spirit of the Challenge (to get 914s on the road), a couple days late wasn't too far behind to participate. So we added them. We have 32 cars now. I hope no one objects.
thank you to the vendors that have added incentive for us lazy bastards to get our cars back on the road
I'm actually planning to do a parallel build. We will see how far I get.
Oooh, how do I get in on this? I just started my '75 build and its getting all the things: fiberglass everything, new pans, 5-bolt conversion, WRX power. 8pt roll cage.
I WANT IN!
Restoration Design has stepped up and is giving all Challengers a 15% discount on the 914 sheet metal they make. In fact, they are offering this discount to everybody. The discount period ends December 31, 2015. Thank you Restoration Design (time to order some parts).
Great news that RD is offering to all the builders, very generous of them! I'd love to join in the madness but the doctor says I've still got another month before I even start trying to get out of the wheelchair- it's been a very long 4 month process for me. I'm getting to know way too many Physical Therapists but they've made all the difference and now to see that I get a discount on sheetmetal too gets me even more psyched to get back to building!
Good luck to all you loonies participating in this Challenge- you make reading through the site SO much more interesting and the skills displayed here are an inspiration!
A few more teeners have asked to be included as participants. I spoke with some of the sponsors and we are going to add them. But, we have to close this off officially. So, speak now or forever hold your peace.
I would like to be included. My build thread is here: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=257306&hl=
I can change the title if needed.
Save the 914 is donating an event shirt to each Challenger, with the revised logo printed large on the front, and the Challengers names, location, and year and engine of their car on the back (concert shirt-style). The shirt will be a light color (maybe a sandy beige). Challengers, please PM me your shirt size and address. The shirts tend to run a little small. Please keep that in mind when choosing your size.
EDIT:
A couple people have asked to order extras, or asked to buy one since they are not participating in the Challenge. We can print some extras if anyone else wants one. If so, please PM me your info. We will do them at $15 plus shipping ($19.99 total). Paypal: savethe914@gmail.com

Gerard
We mapped out where all of the builds are. Here they are - http://fourteenermotoring.com/2015/10/06/914-build-off-challenge-where-are-the-challengers-located/
Yep that's how far north I am.
cincy would be great for a gathering, I grew up in Dayton. love sw ohio
I'm from Cincy (Northern KY but that's all the same...). I could take a trip to visit my dad and my 70 bus he stole from me.
OK, so I guess I am the first one to post an October update...
I did not make a lot of progress this month for the usual reasons, but more on that later.
What I did get done was: Repair/weld up the weather strip channel for the front trunk, grind out more seam sealer and begin the rear trunk floor repairs.
Spots like these.
Then this happend and I had to stop work on the car and gather my rosebuds while I may.. could... what ever. Salvaged and installed for a warmer winter.
After money this is the number one killer of this project... other projects that jump ahead in line.
I did not receive any help from vendors this month, but my fingers are crossed that next month I can get the media blasting done.
Update for October.
Car is still across the street at my friends house. Volvo taking longer to finish..dropped brand new piston wrist pin on ground, scratched the piss out of it, broke my piston ring compressor....capacitors for mill computer blew up, in process of converting to new motion controller (complete re-wire and programming of machine)
Not sure if the following is progress or not for the 914.
I bought a Passat/Boxster transmission to adapt to my 1.7 Type IV, the following pics show some drawings I'm doing to mock it up...I will be designing a billet aluminum flywheel for the ring gear and clutch friction surface I have drawn up also.
Oh yea, have not bought anything from a Challenge vendor nor have I received help or financial assistance (Dave Darling gave me a hard time for not getting the car running 1st, I expect no less from those I've known for so long!)
I fully expect to come in at least 2nd to last place with all the other awesome builds and I'm okay with that
October Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265860&hl=
Only thing 914-related that happened this month is I sold a rear panel from a parts 914 to a friend who is in the process of repairing a 914 that was rear ended. So now I at least have a few $$ to put towards my build
Before I can really get busy on my 914, I need to get my '02 GTI running. Have been in the (slow) process of replacing a bad turbo and miscellaneous hoses and undoing years of poor maintenance by the PO. Once that is done, I will have a winter driver and will be able to park the 914 in the garage for some major work.
Oh, yeah... recently purchased a New Beetle Convertible for my daughter (shhh, she doesn't know about it). Will be a Christmas/birthday gift. Problem is, it needs some repairs before we give it to her at Christmas.
I have too many projects
OCTOBER UPDATE: for BACK IN BLACK(i'm renaming my thread this with the addition of the AC/DC song of same name as my official music) yep, that's all I've done-----
no, actually what I have accomplished is hooked up wiring, put in new fuel lines, fuel filter, pump, tank etc.
I bought the car as a rolling stripped down project, so normally I would not have done that but with this contest its not a bad way to go. it saved me a lot of time and trouble, but as discussed on Jeff B's recent tread asking the question which is worth more or which would you prefer, its a hard thing to sort thru all that stuff done by someone else, so I have spent hours sorting thru bags of labeled stuff, and some not labeled, digging into the car to look for rust(of which I have found some, nothing show stopping) and assembling a list of stuff I need to order from restoration design.
-began chipping out the tar board in the floor pans, found some rust along the edges of the floor, but mostly just surface stuff so far. right hell hole had a bad attempt at previous repair, including bad welding and calk!,
-wiring: wow what a mess - this takes the most time. Ordered some schematics, a member here sent me a PDF which I blew up, sent to local print shop, had them printed and laminated so I don't need my glasses to read them!!
- pulled wiring back thru to sort, hook up the fuel pump. because I need to know what I have in order to know if I am doing major or minor engine work- i'm really close to trying to crank it up so that I can then check for leaks, check compression etc. ( car is a 75 with 1.8 L-jet.)
- what I have sourced and ordered so far:
1. new Mahle wheels from member here: - will be shipped today or tomorrow(soon as I pay him )
2. New Distributor with installed optical points from Hot Spark - I read here that several others were using this distributor and very happy with the performance.
3. ordered vac hose, bought pump, filter and gas line and hooked all that up
4. new battery
5. I bought 914rubber.com bumper tops for back dating the bumpers- this might not happen, as I was contemplating a full stock build and restore: which poses the question, should I or should I not? because I cant find a set of decent nice chrome bumpers!!! , SO for anyone out there that might have a set let me know, otherwise it will have to just sell these toppers, and put the stock stuff back on (which maybe I should do)
this car is a mostly clean it up, make repairs and reassemble mostly in a stock fashion. Not custom.
Goals for this month that I believe I will have met:
- rewire , sort thru that- test run motor, strip floor pan and assess all areas for rust
- order parts, source proper wheels for car, sort thru parts stash,
- sourced a local Porsche shop that will help with next months goals:
-start car, run it and asses motor for needed repairs before dropping it out and cleaning it up
-threw out almost all interior parts except seats!! it was all trash
** so new list of parts needed to go forward: hell hole repair, battery tray, new dash and all new interior including door panels, back pad panels, white vinyl for back , doors, seats, - need to find out what carpet the car would have had stock- it was originally a stock black outside and white interior???
Next months goals: minor welding repairs of rear firewall, hell hole, replace battery tray to original location, fix 2 other body rust spots, prime etc
- pull motor and clean, put all nice new stuff on it,
- maybe finish minor body work have either touched up, or full respray- this is not decided yet.
- * will need all new exhaust so that decision will come later, but, I have very nice 1.8 heat exchangers with triad exhaust on my 75 2.0 copper car, so I might do a swap and buy the dual outlet SS. set up from Tangerine racing and put it on the Copper car. Decisions, Decisions!!!
Pictures will be posted on my thread, but yea, we've made some progress!
major parts orders are coming from 914 rubber, PMB, Restoration Design and Auto Atlanta.

Oct 2015 progress
Still working on the drivers side fenders, bought some new Soft Sanders sanding blocks and they really helped smooth things out. The Durablocks are pretty good but the Soft Sanders bend more. I got the fenders to about 90% and had to walk away.
Taking too much time being anal about every little pit right now. So I pushed it out of the shed and turned it around, to work on the other side. The shed isn’t really big enough to easily work on both sides. but I can roll it over on the cart to get to the other side for some work.
Earlier I had just put some spray bomb primer on the passenger side just to keep the flash rust at bay, so I sanded all of that off to start the bondo work on the passenger side flares. (no Metal Surgeon here)
Next I have to make this look pretty and smooth.
Caught a couple warm days and it was really nice to work on the car outside for a change. Plus I could give the shed a good vacuuming.
Stripped the doors to take to the media blaster and found he will be out of town on another job for a month. That is going to slow me down, since I probably won’t get the stuff done until around Thanksgiving. I wanted to get started on the doors, and trunk lids. Something nice and flat to sand on for a change.
Stripped and epoxy primered the engine lid and found my rain tray had gotten warped and cracked up while in storage. Used a heat gun to get it straight, then epoxy glued the cracks. It turned out pretty good.
Diassembled my seat mounts and sent them to the powder coaters along with the rotor dust covers. And took my seat tilt aduster levers to my buddy’s Chrome shop. I know chrome isn’t for everybody but I like it on some things.
Shipped my calipers and prop valve off to PMB for a rebuild and ordered a bunch of related brake parts.
It didn’t seem like I got much done until I started writing it down. The weather will be an issue here soon and will screw me up as far a painting goes. I may have to just start installing some stuff while I continue to work on the body. Downside to that is the sanding dust gets everywhere, even though I tarp it off with old sheets.
That's about it for now.
Love the winch setup to pull your dollied 914 back into your shed. I was admiring your simple dolly, and then said WTF, whats that for, lol, and noticed the cable. Saves a few backs I am sure.
October Update: Spent most of the month getting the car up on wooden cribs to allow me to move the motor under the car. Made a wooden cradle for the motor and transmission to hold it in place to build front bulkhead mount and rear transmission mount. Presently the front mount is complete with the exception of some cosmetic welding and grinding so it can be sent off to powder coat. The rear Transmission mount is tacked together and will be finished up this weekend.
Next month I will be cleaning the drivers and hell hole up and getting ready for primer. I will try to work out some of the wiring to clean it up and get it all heading in the right direction. By the end of the month I hope to have the floorboard on the drivers side repaired and my stiffening kit installed.
Wish me luck and thank you for the positive comments, they are really motivating after a day metal shavings and rust in the eyes.

I don't feel like I had the most productive month. I spent most of it cutting out bad sections of the passenger long and then fabbing some pieces to go back on. I also fought some rust in the floor and prepped the wheelhouse for receiving its replacement after I finish the inner long.
I didn't receive any assistance from vendors, but I bought some parts from Restoration Design. The biggest challenge I faced was some extra rust and the fabricated pieces being a little more complex than I envisioned. On top of that, I found that I needed to do a lot of extra work to try and make later tasks easier. Most challenges were met and solved by patience and hope alone.
I'm really hoping November, with its 2 long weekends results in greater progress. My goals are to finish fabricating the inner long and have it fully welded in (as opposed to its current tack job), install the new wheelhouse (including finishing clearing up the surrounding area of crud and PO POR), and maybe even get everything completely lined up and the engine compartment long welded in.

October Update:
Well I feel like I got nothing done. I have spent most of my time thinking. People like madmax914 do these neat things like engine mounts, and make me want to redo mine.
So this month, I have cut the 914 further apart. Cut a roof off a 944, and made slow progress towards getting focused and as of today, started installing the hidden hitch in my 914.
All fits behind this period correct plate.
Plate was my Grand Fathers
October update:
Identified the front 914 wiring harness. Should be easy to match up to the Audi system.
Removed the v8 engine setup.
Did some work on the interior concept. I like it a lot
Picked up a members 914 to install the v8 into.

Got side tracked with rust repair. Hope to get this car out of the garage in 2 weeks with a running v8 setup.
October Update:
A. A brief description of the progress you made on your build:
I have gotten the car media blasted and epoxy primed this month. I have also worked with the painter and have about fifteen hours of my own time in seam sealing with an epoxy seam sealer. This week I started sanding the epoxy primer so the painter can paint the inside of all the cars bulkheads.
B. Any unexpected challenges you encountered this month, and how those challenges were handled:
The biggest challenge has been keeping the painter focused on working on my car and not any other cars. If I go over and help then it gets worked on. I sort of understand it but I only have so much time to help.
The other challenge is that there are five bulkheads to prepare and paint instead of the normal three that most other cars have.
C. Whether any shops/vendors provided any services for the build during the month, and the value of such services:
No, unfortunately I am providing the help to the painter.

October Update: Michigan Build
Build progress :
Removed all the tail section, and the back hafe of the rear trunk pan along with a second layer of sheet metal and lots of welding wire. scraped lots of carpet glue off the remaining area's, lots of body filler, what a mess. Alinged, fitted, prepped and welded in the new pieces. Filled the holes for titts that were drilled in a early bumper, and hung it.
Unexpected challenges:
The previous repaired damage required a lot of time to clean up, and repair correctly before installing my parts, otherwise the body lines would be off.
Vendors:
I purchased the rear trunk pan from Restoration Design, great vendor.

Am I too late to join in
Eisberg, October update...
Progress, brief description.
October consisted of two themes: tools, and patches. At the beginning of the month I put together a sheet metal bender. It's got a 50" capacity so that I can fabricate the inner longs. More complicated parts will be purchased.
Also, I order and installed a new gun for the welder, a Chicago Electric Mono Mig 140 of a similar vintage as my 914. It was loaned to me by an original owner of a 914, a guy who is sympathetic to my project. This welder has been working on 914s its entire life. Oddly, installing the new gun did not miraculously make my welds into stacks of dimes.
Finally, I am cobbling together a set of metal forming tools for making patches.
Challenges.
Plenty of challenges, but I'm going to claim that none were unexpected.
A large part of my time this month has been practicing with welding 20g sheet, and also hammer forming patches. The challenges are in learning all the little details about doing these things well. I was not expecting to become an expert overnight. Not to say I wasn't hoping...
Shops/vendors.
No professional involvement yet, but preparing to send an order to RD in the beginning of November.
I'd call that some good metal working.
Nothing bought this month..
Striped the paint off the doors and hoods and bumpers shot with self etching primer.
Had a set back with regards to paint. while the body panels don't have body work in them when painted and shiny they look less than perfect.
So sanding all exterior of the shell and will begin a Dolphin Glaze process to get them mirror flat. Not that big of a deal since it's only the front fenders and rear quarters that have color on them.

Build-Off Challenge Progress Update - Vysoc / Yellow Submarine
As of yesterday here is what I have accomplished in October, which is really not as much as I was shooting for, I am sure it is the same for everyone.
Reorganization of Garage, I found another place to park my White 914 Driver, so that I can focus entirely on getting some major metalwork done.
Yesterday I repositioned the Rotisserie and set up my work stations to best accommodate progress.
I patched a hole on the side of my Hell Hole and trimmed more of the old floor board away so that I could get a feel for exact placement of Driver's Side Cross Member and my new Floorboards as well as the Rear Corner Braces and Jack Point Donuts.
Unexpected challenges:
After I turned the car upside down I was removing the four, #6 Hex bolts that hold the steering column in place. One of the hex bolts was stripped, I had to cut a groove in the head by hand with a hacksaw blade, no good, heat, no good. I ended up drilling all the way through the middle of the hex bolt without touching the sides or ruining the threads, and then she came free. 2 Hours later.
Also was all set to use my New/Old Miller TIG, it seems I am not wired for the 220/50amp breakers required so I am going to install the correct female plug and correct amp wires to be able to do this in the garage. The Dryer works off of 30 Amp Breakers, and I did not have the correct extension cord or receptacle to set-up or run 220 out to the garage.
Better to set it up correctly and safely, would look awful funny burning the house down to TIG weld.

So....my progress in a word? underwhelming!
I knew the start would be. I am a self employed contractor 9 months of the year an I work as a ski rep 5 months of the year. Guess what two months they over lap. October/ November.
In the evenings I have gotten some of the engine tin degreased, cleaned and blasted.
The plan for the next month is to remove the red cars motor/trans and stow it in the basement so I can work on it in a warm place. Maybe cut the red one apart.
Nothing bought.
sold some small parts
-$400.00
+$50.00 parts sold
-$350 in the red
Progress has been slow this month due to snow prep. The biggest challenge I am dealing with is time management and this:
I had this not so great idea 3 years ago to strip the inside floor and POR15 it. Another not so bright idea was to lay down new sound deadening material, follow the directions to the letter and now I am painfully removing it. I am glad that I am doing this since I found moisture underneath the material.
........before POR 15 is thrown under the bus let's consider what some folks may have done to prepare surface before applying same.....
Okay so I just realized I had to post on this page and not my thread page. Below is my post from my thread. Also adding pictures unrelated to Porsche. Once again sorry for the mostly unrelated porsche post but I hope you can understand. Amy is excited to hit the ground running on the interior when we return. My plan is to start working on the rust. Had some items from restoration design and tangerine racing arrive so going to open em up when I get home. The only 914 photo that I have is from my last post. That was where I was at when I left.
hello 914 crew! This post is going to be more brief than i would like because i am currently in colombia on a honeymoon and internet here is a bit scant. I havent made any progress since my last post because i got married in fort lauderdale and immediately left to go to Colombia.
For the progress on the car in the past month, i got the majority of the interior out and had a few problems getting the back interior piece out. The emergency brake handle was pretty rusted and it broke. Getting the engine out was also pretty difficult for me but ended up getting it. If i had it do it again i would probably have purchased larger jack stands. Being a cheap ass i opted to get the cheap harbor frieght small ones and it was somewhat of a hassle. I did get the rear rotors and calipers off prior to leaving and plan on painting them when i get back. I took the rotors in to get turned at Oreillys auto parts for $15/each and they came back looking brand new. Sweet! That was really the only service that i used thus far. Amy was pretty overwhelmed with wedding junk so she didnt make any progress any of the interior but its understandable.
Unrelated to the porsche the wedding was a blast. We did a destination wedding on a boat in florida and it was tons of fun. 100 guests for a destonation wedding was a little much but everything turned out really well. These are the only real photos that i have available at this point so sorry for not posting an official Porsche photo.
The keyboard here is also pretty funky making this post a little difficult but oh well. Im actually at a small little hotel on an island off the coast of colombia. The place has a monkey that has taken a strong liking to me for some odd reason. Maybe because i am about as hairy as him. Everytime my brother or anyone tries to take him off me he gets really mad and tries to bite them. Ha. This is my first time in Colombia and it is much much safer than i was expecting. everyone says its extremely dangerous and its just not true. Everyone here is just really friendly.
Once again really sorry for this type of post but thanks for understanding.
I have been trying to save the photo for a while and just figured it out. Alright thanks for understanding such a crappy porsche post.

October's updates:
I was test fitting the engine, so I can know what modifications to make to the layout, and configuration of the intake and such.
So far the trunk torsion bars have been removed, and I'm picking up an intake mainfold this weekend.

Here is my first update. I am at ground zero of the valley fire in California, and have little access to internet due to infrastructure being burned. Will get my build thread up as soon as it is restored.
Working mainly on motor placement/mounts. I am putting a VW TDI engine and trans in transverse. I know it is unconventional... but it is all German.
Ill give more info when I get my thread up.....Brent
It’s been a busy month. I spent the first two weeks of October removing everything left on the car except the suspension/wheels. I wanted to have the car sitting on the wheels so that I could install some bracing in the floor area. I know that bracing will need to come out at some point but until I know which panels need replaced I want the additional support. I also decided that I want to be able to hang the doors to check the gaps as panels are replaced so I had to change where I attached the door braces so that I can fit a door with the braces in place. And, I wasn’t really happy with the door braces that I had previously made using black pipe. The pipe flexed much more than I expected so I remade the braces with some extra square tubing I had laying around.
The last 2 weeks of October were spent building a rotisserie. I went with Restoration Design’s rotisserie because I think it best fits my particular needs of wanting to be able to move it around a lot and be able roll it onto my lift if need be. $250 worth of steel got the job done but I wasn’t prepared for the amount of time it took to fabricate it and for the amount of dirt created cutting and grinding new steel with the oily mill finish on it. It was however fun welding thick steel and it gave me a reason to buy a better welding helmet. I’ve been using a Harbor Freight helmet and while I haven’t done much welding before, when I did I struggled with being able to see where I was welding. So, I bought a Hobart Pro helmet and the difference is night and day. Much easier to see, lots of adjustments and the head strap assembly works really well. I also bought a better ground clamp as the clamp that came on my Millermatic 180 was practically useless. Once I got the settings on the welder dialed in and my technique correct I was able to lay down some pretty good welds.
Once the rotisserie was attached I removed the remaining suspension and with my wife’s help we removed the entire wire harness .
So, what’s next is to strip the car of paint so I can see all the parts that need cut out. I have a guy coming out next week to soda blast it in my driveway. His business is called Stripper for Hire (http://www.stripperforhire.com)…… I’m sure I’ll be the talk of the neighborhood! I still need to put dolly wheels on the rotisserie but I am waiting for a piece of steel so I will use cheap furniture dolly’s from Harbor Freight to get the car off my lift and outside for the stripper.
No outside services or vendors were used and there we no real surprises other than the amount of welding to build the rotisserie.
Love all that steel
October Update:
A. A brief description of the progress you made on your build.
Going slow, but most of the car coming apart now. Got the hoods off, headlights out and getting prepared to get the dash out soon. Still can't get the rear window out...
B. Any unexpected challenges you encountered this month, and how those challenges were handled.
Time is my greatest challenge My silly day job eats up all my time.
C. Whether any shops/vendors provided any services for the build during the month, and the value of such services.
None
D. At least one photo of the build’s progress.
All pictures for my build are in my build thread.
Update? Progress? Work performed? Hell, I can not tell a lie, all I did was completely cover the car so it would stop collecting dust. I did do some major shop cleaning to have more uncluttered space for working on the car.
Move along folks, nothing to see here.
Hopefully I will make up for it in November.
Shoe
My update is similar to hotshoes.
I did manage to start taking the 5.3 LS apart in order to start cleaning it up.
Put together a vibratory cleaner with a 5 gallon bucket, and a vibratory unit from HF.
Working 60 hours weeks, along with a 2 hour commute only leaves Sundays to get anything done.
This past Sunday I spent cutting up the 40 ft. hackberry tree that fell in the back yard at our rental.
But, I head to SEMA Monday.
Here's a few new photos... Plus a photo of my new "anonymous" style on my old thread.

Progress:
Zero! I made no progress this month.
I am in the middle of a small remodel of my house and I was out of town 1 weekend for my granddaughters 1st birthday
Well, I did blow off some of the dust before Mike came and picked up a trans from me, looks a little better.
Any unexpected challenges?
Well I did not expect to spend much time working on my 914 this month.
I knew my month was going to busy but planned to work on it the weekend after my birthday.
Instead I spent the weekend in bed with a fever
Any shops/vendors provided any services?
None
Photo of the build’s progress:
Since I did not actually make any progress I post some pictures of progress I made prior to entering this contest.
Progress prior to the contest:
I pulled apart the headlight assemblies and repainted and rebushed the pivots.
As it turns out, I guess I am registered for this years challenge. Thanks for letting me join the madness, errr - I mean Challenge.
October Progress: Been working on getting the underbody coating off. Looks good and down to the factory primer in some parts, bare metal in others. Just about ready for primer, paint, and new underbody coating.
Challenges: The area around the right-rear jack plate is smashed in. It will need to be rebuilt before I can weld the jack plate in.
Vendor Participation: Picked up several parts from Mark at Restoration Design.
Hi all, been a bit of a random month with no work on my car, and my excuse is my better half was rushed in to hospital for 2 weeks ! Thankfully she's now back home and on the road to recovery.
So excuses given and the work begins again
The main work to take place is the extension of the footwell to accommodate the pedal assembly I'll be starting to cut this weekend keep an eye out for updates on my own build thread
Hi Steve,
Reading through the thread I'm a little confused as where I need to post my monthly updates?
Here? or in my thread or both?
I posted my October update on the 25th in my thread, should I have posted it here?
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=247250&st=0#entry2126625
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Steve,
Got it!
Month 1, I worked in the engine bay, dropped the motor, replaced battery tray and stripped it all out for an engine bay repaint.
Following a pm from Steve (thanks Steve) I realized I need to list any parts bought from the nominated vendors.
In Month one, I used Auto Atlanta for the following parts
Relay board clip $30
Reproduction Relay Board Cover $42.75
Relay board Cover Nut $12.35
International shipping $59.50
Total $144.60
Unfortunately as I’m in UK I have to pay import duty on the parts & shipping.
This Tax is at 20%, so that cost me a further $28.92
Then there is a handling charge for the UK Post office administration at $13.85.
Grand total to me for a relay board cover was $187.37
You don’t know how easy you guy’s have it living the other side of the pond!
Olympic Blue Challenge Nov 2015 update.
Started doing the bodywork on the Pass side, Trying to get out there on the warmer days. easier to heat up the shed.
Then I did this...
Slowed me down a little. I didn't think about how much you use that finger. other than for waving at foolish motorists.
anyways every time I started working with it. I would open it back up.
I know excuses are like assholes.....
but in spite of that I did get a couple things accomplished..
stripped the old bearings / races out of my hubs and bead blasted them.
and installed my Elephant Racing rubber bushings in to my front control arms. Not as easy as in the video ( especially with this finger ) but still went pretty smoothly.
Question on the torsion bars, do the L /R markings go in front or in back?
Vendors
I took advantage of 914 Rubbers Black Friday sale and put in an order, even though I won't need the stuff for a little while. price ~ 500
I sent my front A calipers to PMB for a rebuild, and ordered the rest of my brake needs price ~ 2000
Hope to get these damn stiches out in time for Pennsylvania Deer hunting on Monday....
Later..
Month 2 was a busy month (just posted an epic saga in my resto thread)
I carried on taking the car apart, fitted a new master cylinder, refurbished the exhaust system, bushed the pedals and cleaned more parts up. Trouble is the more I get into the car, the more I find that needs doing!
No parts purchased this month from the sponsors, but a few from private vendors here in UK.
Hope you enjoy my thread.
Regards
Darren
Did not get as far as I wished this month, lots of upheaval in my life this month. Close friend lost her battle with the Big C. It was a great ride, glad I knew her. I traveled a lot which meant little time in the shop, which culminated in a trip to the emergency room after I had a medical emergency while on a plane. I am still wrapping up the testing so far, have not found a dang thing.
So the car got put on the back burner, hopefully be back at it soon. I did get a lot of stuff done on the rear trunk, and started welding in the rear hitch.
While laid up in the hospital bed, I got a strange idea, I would like to do the one-lap in a 914. Not to be just to have the fun of and the insanity of the idea.
Wow! Where did the month go?
11.vendor purchases: $750;restoration design metal, vac hoses and some other stuff from A.A., and some stuff from 914 rubber, I'll have to look back to see $$,
But I've made no progress, as my DD needed attention, lime a new wheel bearing and the "while you are in there" hit me so I'm in the middle of replacing all of it (2000 audi tt)- shock/struts, bushings, bearings, tie rods and ball joints.
- it took up my whole day yesterday and had to help a friend move today, and last week I was at a conference 5 days in St. Louis,.and this past month had to do more painting etc of the house which we are trying to sell. But less $$ coming in this month so I'm done spending any $$ until after the holidays.
I do have a goal of soon stripping out the tar board.
Posted 2 sets of 5 lug Fuchs in the for classifieds so that I can get some of the body work done. I need then to save up about $3500 for the paint work.
November Update.
Progress Description:
November has been paint removal month and I got quit a bit of paint off. All tthe big panels have the paint off, except the bottom of the rear trunk lid.
I also got the hing brackets off and started cleaning up the replacement tail light panel.
Unexpected Challenges:
This month I found my drivers door is toast. Fortunatly Doug has a spare door for me. The rear trunk lid turned out not to be something to brag about either.
Shops/Vendors:
Sadly I did not get anything from the sponsor vendors. I did get some stuff from my local NAPA. I actually got two of the primers. $135.
This month I haven't accomplished as much as hoped. Work has been crazy.
I have been working on a subframe for the engine and have it all mocked up. If Ican get my sons car off the lift I can get back to work.
Nothing purchased from vendors yet, but I have gone through a boat load of cut off discs.
Move along...nothing to see here...yet!
914-SHO project
November Progress: Finished getting the underbody coating off. Also cut out the damaged front trunk area. Patched and reshaped it, welded it back in and cleaned up the welds on both sides.
Also welded on the left side rear jack post from Restoration Design. Still have to cleanup the sheet-metal on the right side before installing that one.
Challenges: Had half a dozen dents in the front trunk floor. Got them all squared away after couple of hours of heating and pounding. Ready for primer on the underside, but still have to do more paint removal on the inside of the trunk.
Vendor Participation: None this month
Pictures:
Front trunk floor damage
Cut out and repaired damaged section - ready to weld in.
Finished repair for trunk inside and out.
Welded rear jack post on left side
November Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Finished both rear fenders. I learned a lot on welding temp and speed. Patched in a front fender. Found that if the bottom of the fender lines up with the same as stock, the valance lines up, and the opening and fit of the fender worked very well in relation to each other. And looking forward to working on the valances next.
Unexpected challenges:
The amount of think time be for each cut. think 20 times, cut once. And keeping the fender orientated while cutting. The amount of hammer time required to stop the heat sinking from the weld. Lots of time.
Vendors:
I purchased a few things. 914 Rubber fantastic vendor.

2016 Build-Off Challenge November Update: YELLOW SUB / VYSOC
NOVEMBER PROGRESS: Finally finished electrical work (yesterday) in Garage and am now able to run my Miller TIG Welder. The 240V/50Amp program was not as easy as first thought to be spent a great deal of time feeding wire through garage attic and getting it to the Electric Panel was a PITA. We are now operational and meeting all codes so now I can crawl forward.
CHALLENGES: Crawling through rafters and laying on trusses, trying not to fall through the drywall ceiling.
VENDOR PURCHASES: Nothing of major concern this month.
PHOTOS: I will attempt to attach them tomorrow.
But it has been a very busy month at work to the tune of about 3300+ rounds of golf, keeping the members happy is a full time 7 day a week job.
December will slow down a little and I will hopefully get the TIG Tuned in and accomplish some major work.
Vysoc
I fell short of the month's goals, but not by too much. I finished fabbing my inner long, and in the process learned it would have been worth doing something to make an extra $300 for the RD part...though I guess I had some fun. Of course there was unexpected rust issues to fight. I also spent a lot of time measuring and developing a jack/brace/rotisserie/black/whatever system to get the body straight and true for upcoming welds. And even more time fitting/trimming the wheelhouse and engine compartment long pieces for installation and developing a system of supports/strengtheners/stiffeners/braces to strengthen them. I've also spent many hours awake in bed trying to figure out how to do all this inside the closed long...
Challenges I faced this month were mostly in achieving the perfect fit, squaring the car, and figuring out the strengthener puzzle.
I received nothing from vendors this month, but did buy some parts from RD.
Attached thumbnail(s)
November progress: More of the same this month, learning to fabricate patches... I made a couple attempts at each patch, usually practicing in a thinner gauge first, then making the one that will get welded in. Made some tools as well, mainly anvils and T-dollies. Then there was a lot of exploratory cutting and cleaning in preparation for welding- not photogenic stuff.
No unexpected challenges unless you want to count distractions like replacing CV joint boots on my DD and helping a buddy replace a water pump.
Shop/vendor assistance: Yes! Received an order from Restoration Designs! I really thought it would take a while to get them from the far north. Canada's way up past the arctic circle, isn't it? But I think they arrived in less than a week. Thanks guys!
So these are all the patches, basically for rebuilding the passenger side foot well. Wanted to get this area strong again, so the long would be well supported forward.

Talked to a guy about a front hood and driver door. No deal made yet
My Raby 2056 was on the dyno this month producing mid 140s HP and mid 150s Torque
Cleaned out the garage enough so I can once again park the 914 inside
Installed the turbo and downpipe on the GTI. Now if I can just remember how to put the rest of it back together, I will have a winter driver which will allow me to tear into the 914
B. Challenges
Driving to work one morning and suddenly heard a chuh-ch-ch-ch-ch noise as if something was sliding across the asphalt For the next few minutes I pondered on what part fell off my car. Once parked, I checked and, sure enough, the piece that connects from the fan housing to the heat exchanger had fallen off. (A portion of the housing is broken off so it allowed the piece to work loose). Couple days later, I stopped at the approximate area and walked along the side of the road in search of the part. Found it! Reinstalled with the addition of the vertical J-pipe so now if it works loose it won't be able to fall off.
C. Shop/vendor provided services
Jake Raby at Raby's Aircooled Technology finalized my engine build. It is scheduled to be in my garage December 1
Progress:
I made no progress again this month but I knew I would not have much time this month. The spare time I had went toward remodel work on my house.
On the positive side, the house has all new windows, the stucco repairs & color coat are almost done, the new bathroom and closet are all wired & painted, just need the tile floor installed, the vanities set and my beams and barn door hung.
Any unexpected challenges?
Well I was sick again this month, got a nasty cold that off work for a few days.
Any shops/vendors provided any services?
My dash from 914rubber arrived!!
I ordered it as part of the group buy before the challenge started.
Jim
Car was soda blasted the first week of November. Cost for soda blasting was $500. I had the guy concentrate on removing the yellow paint and cleaning all the area’s that I knew were bad and wanted to get a better look. Some parts of the car like the floor are likely to be replaced so I only had the edges of those panels blasted but didn’t waste time (and money) thoroughly cleaning all the panels.
All in all the soda blasting revealed that there are more areas to be addressed than I had hoped. Luckily, it’s only metal. Fortunately, Christmas came early in the form of this amazing tool.
I’m waiting for a sheet of 18ga to get here, hopefully this week. Also expect to be ordering RD parts this week. Not much else to report this month. I anticipated that November was going to be a fairly unproductive month because of work demands so I feel that I am still on my tentative schedule.
Update time.
Progress:
I think it is progress.... I bought a third car for the build. Well most of a car. It is a 1975 that Ghuff was working on. The body is really solid in the usual problem areas. It needs some love in the front fender to windshield post area and new doors/rear fenders. (A fun conversation with a skeptical wife...Its a lot less work to just chuck on some fenders)
A short 10hr drive to Georgia pick up the car and a 10 hr hop back. The 75 has been assessed cleaned and stowed.
Solid floors an longs!!!
The 73 started the end of its life by giving up the drive train and interior.
Challenges:
Staying awake on the trip home from Georgia.
Not posting enough on the build thread.
Budget:
-$1000.00 Original purchase
+$200.00 sold 2 sets of seats
+$400.00 sold targa top, center counsel, muffler, and sun visors
__________
- $400.00
-$300.00 for the 75
___________
-$700.00 In the hole
Goals next month:
Strip the 73 and cut it up.
Sell some of the "easy sale items"
Separate the usable parts from the 73 stash
Clean up the carbs
finish the engine tin and chassis parts that are in raw metal.
November Build Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=114780&view=findpost&p=2261816
The first half of this month was spent finishing up Bretts car. But after that was done I got some work done on fitting the engine and buying a load of parts.
First I removed the engine shelf.
Then I test fit the engine
Reinforced and cut the hole
And bought the following from non vendors. (Pics in thread)
Fuel pump and surge tank
1300cc injectors
Water to air intercooler
Intercooler radiator
Electronic boost controller
Electronic water pump with LCD controller
Turbo heat blanket
Gold foil heat protectant
Intercooler radiator fill tank
November update for my build:
I'm moving to Utah, and have spent most of my time gathering parts up to put them in the garage at my new place.
Alright so i know im late to the party and i apologize. I spent almost half of November on a honeymoon in Colombia so that will be my only excuse. I will not have anymore.
I did manage to get the chassis braces on the car which was harder than it should have been, but was expected given my automotive knowledge. Anyhow, i did manage to spend some time learning how to cut up a 914 from the mile high crew and am very gracious for that.
Alright so attached is a photo with the chassis braces on.
December is going to be my month, i feel it.
Thanks for understanding my late post and if you dont, well come out to Lakewood Colorado and we can have a beer and discuss it in person.

My favorite oxymoron:
"... unexpected rust ... "
Three months of the Challenge are almost complete. It's time to heat this contest up. The first round of voting is right around the corner. And some of the vendor discounts end December 31st. So order what you need and get that 914 rolling.
Current status of the car is the same as Octobers update. I haven't touched the car due to knee surgery followed by totaling my Jetta Sportwagon TDI, which was then followed by a fall at my daughters house with a landing on the very knee three weeks after surgery. I figure January can't get worse.
The month of December was very satisfying since the car was in the final stages of bodywork and painting. The car was painted a few days before Christmas and was buffed out on Christmas day. I was able to pick it up the day after Christmas which was very exciting!
I didn’t run into any unexpected challenges other than the car was done quicker than I anticipated but that is a good thing.
I haven’t had any shop or vendors offer any services but I will be taking advantage of 914Rubber’s generous discount offer in the next few days.
Below is my car finally back in my garage---Some assembly required!
Jeff B
Wow !
Paint looks fantastic.
Wow, Jefff that looks awesome!
My project update: STALLED,
I had to spend some time working on the other 914, the one that runs- already updated this on my project thread, but the skinny of it is this: selling our house, moving, garage space, therefore lack of time and $$ until after my house is sold-or I should say closed deal as it is under contract but here is the kicker, I'm having to spend almost $10k on roofing and wood rot and polybutyl plumbing replacement!! - that was my whole budget for the 914 build!!!! so I have not touched the car in the last month.
Vendors: I bought some door cranks.-ebay; car is sitting in garage ready to have gas put in the tank to test motor ,
- RESTORATION DESIGN partial floor panel and battery tray
- Auto Atlanta - L-jet parts including vac lines
-914 Rubber: upper dash vinyl and pad,
-Sierra Madre Collection: - outer door handles
-Reharvey-World member-awesome like new Mahle Wheels!!!
- tail light replacement and getting a new signal stalk/switch soon- 914sixer
-located local shop that has body experience with all older porsches, 356, 912, 911 etc they will do my few rust repair issues, clean up bad hell hole patch made by P.O. and replace battery tray - car is going to shop to make room in garage(rental house) so that we can store our stuff that has to come out of the attic of the house we are selling- we have a 2 week delay in closing on the awesome home we are buying(32x32 garage under house with separate shop etc!!!!!)
so this will not be complete move wise until end of February!!
Please be patient for this will be a completed running restored 75 914 , original color inside and out(black with white interior)
- I have a local shop paint quote and have set aside 2/3 of cost for this, so I just need the minor body, rust repair to be done and I expect it to be done by the time we move in February, plan is in 2 weeks it goes to the welder/body guy, then to paint, then back to me for assembly as it is for the most part stripped down.
-things I have to do before welding- remove rest of tar board off floor, remove rear tail lights, , that's it!!
pictures to follow soon!
Dr. Phil
December update.
Well I did a bunch of this.
Then more of this.....
To get here... this is in PPG epoxy, then I'll shoot a couple coats of Slicksand and start blocking that down.
The lip on the fender is the hardest to get just right. but I am learning.
this still needs a little more work and the back quarter is coming along also.
I like the way the flares look, subtle, the front almost looks stock
Purchased new rocker covers from Restoration design, since mine were looking pretty bad.
still waiting on my PMB order. couple pieces are on backorder.
I got the bearing races installed in my front hubs. next I will put the Turbo tie rod parts onto the steering rack.
This competition is great for keeping me motivated. I seem to get a burst of energy near the end of the month.....
Lets see, a whole bunch of life got in the way.
Trip to Portland ended in a ride to the ER, but I caused our plane to get emergency clearance, and we arrived 30 minutes earlier than we should, way to turn up the wick.
Spent the next month trying to get clearance to drive again, that was no fun.
I am back to driving, all my doctor visits have found nothing, I am in prime condition except all the crap I all ready knew was an issue.
Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, Winter Solstice, etc.... Any excuse to not work on the car....
But the 914 got some progress despite all my efforts to keep me out of the work shop.
No outside services used yet, lots of parts and ideas being tossed around in my head. And yes I am still screwing around with the back bumper, rear trunk area.
Heres is what I spent my time on this month, 30 hours in this bumper this far.
With my novice skills I will most like triple the hours spent on a rear bumper
I asked the same question in his thread, Phoenix red!
What a month this has been!
I’ve kept a daily diary and despite working a 60 hour week I’ve managed to work on the little car every day this month (if even just an hour). For those in the UK who may know me, it’s no real news to find me having 6 hours in the garage on Christmas day…(my idea of Heaven!)
I’ve updated my epic monthly diary on my build thread here:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=247250&pid=2283320&mode=threaded&show=&st=40&#entry2283320
Month 3 is a tale of misfortune with a terrible UK parts supplier and some good old fashioned luck finding some hidden area’s of the little 914 in perfect condition.
So on balance; long term, its been a good month!
I hope you guy’s enjoy my rambles, rants and rejoices….
Regards
Darren
December Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265860&hl=
A. Progress
Replaced the 5+ year old Optima red top battery (that had been giving me issues for quite a while) for a standard battery. No longer need to keep a charger running overnight
B. Challenges
Keeping the 914 running well enough to get me back and forth to work. Most recently, an issue with the ignition system has manifested. Resetting the points and adjusting the timing has helped some. I plan to pull the distributor and clean it up as well as install new points and plugs (already replaced the cap) then adjust valves, set timing, and hope it clears up.
C. Shop/vendor provided services
As mentioned in my last update, my long-anticipated Raby 2056 showed up this month
December update
Short answer, very little.
A little more paint removal.
Super busy at work and lots of travel are my excuses.
No vendor deals, won't get to use the December 31st group as I am nowhere near ready. Oh well.
No suprises
I will have to add pic when I get back in town.

December update:
Spent most of the month working on determining what parts to replace, which ones to buy and which ones to make. I received a nice shipment from Restoration Design and I have another order in with them and with Pelican and both of those should be here next week. I’m confident that next month’s report will show significant progress as my plan has been to start patching in January.
Speaking of patching, I counted over 30 patches on this car that were done (and done poorly) by the previous owner(s). So, as far as what challenges were encountered I would have to say that getting the car soda-blasted revealed a lot more body work problems than I, or anyone else who looked at this car, expected to find. My answer to those challenges was to simply buy more replacement panels than I thought I would have to.
Since winter is upon us and I know that there will be some days where its too cold to function in the garage, I decided to layout my wire harness on some plywood in my basement. I plan to check every wire and replace as needed, clean every connector and rewrap the harness as needed. If I get ambitious, I might label every wire so that it will be easier to install it when that time comes. As bad as the body is, the harness is not much better. Lots of wires that have multiple splices in them, wires that have damaged insulation and wires that appear to go nowhere. I don’t know how much I will work on this in the coming months since it is a low priority task, but the goal will to have the harness done by the time the car is ready to paint.
No shops provided any services. It’s too much fun doing it myself
Vysoc - Yellow Sub - December Update 2015
Hello it is December Update Time and I actually have some progress to report?
I have just added a bunch of detail to my regular thread and probably too many photo's but there is a lot to see.
This month I was able to accomplish the following tasks:
1) Repaired five (5) different areas of major rust along the tunnel and front firewall.
2) Cut out remaining areas of the floor board in preparation for the new floor board
installation.
3) Welded in my new Restoration Design (355L) Driver's Side Middle Brace.
4) Cleaned up and treated all of my Tunnel tubes and reinforced the Clutch Tube,
then treated all with Eastwood"s Internal Frame Coating (the Green Stuff).
5) Fit-Up Driver's and Passenger side Floor Pans, cut off overlap and prepped for
Seam/Butt weld from top to bottom.
6) Butt Welded Floor Pans together, grinded and prepped for early January
attachment after I make a couple of other small things right, while I still have
great access without the floor pans in the way!
Happy New Year everyone here's to getting these car's done prior to Okteenerfest 2016!!!!
Vysoc
It feels like I did a lot this month (maybe because I did all the work in the 2nd half), but when I look back I didn't do all that much. But what I did do was some major stuff.
1. This month's accomplishments: Welded in the wheelhouse, engine compartment long, and a few other little pieces.
2. I can't recall any major challenges unless you count the mother-in-law's visit... I kid! I kid! The biggest challenges were getting the pieces all prepped and fitted while finding the best ways of securing them, finding the location of the motor mount console, and contorting to weld pieces in without having cut up the fender. But of course the granddaddy of this month's challenges was the days spent measuring, bracing, and remeasuring to get the car square before welding in such critical pieces. How I pray I was successful.
3. I received no services or donation from vendors, but watching my bank account I'm really hoping somebody steps forward to help...haha

December is my busiest month of the year at work, so not a lot. Got some work done on the engine cradle
Haven't bought anything this month.
Shopping for custom length axels. Looks like this will be the most expensive part of the project.
If anyone has a line on someone to make axels...let me know
December Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Finished up the flares, 3 of the valances, and mounted up new tires on new rims.
Unexpected challenges:
Nothing big this month
Vendors:
I purchased from PMB Performance, Eckler's Automotion, and Local.
Progress Pictures:
Meant to post yesterday, but a buddy stopped by with a couple growlers, and then we had a wee dram of something else, and then we were toasting the new year. So happy new year, all!
Progress: Reached a milestone: first new metal welded into the car. Probably no big deal for most, but I am pretty excited about it. So much of my work so far has been disassembly, cleaning, and cutting out rusted metal. All tear-down. I've been anxious to start building up, and now here I am.
Challenges: As ever, the challenges are finding time, and learning as I go. Working on the front firewall, I was wondering what to do about the tunnel. Found Perry Kiehl's post with his procedure for treating the tunnel:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=116018&hl=
(post #12)
Had to rethink my strategy at this point- realized that at some point during the build, almost every edge of the floor pan will the cut. Decided to proceed with replacing the longs without welding the floor pan edges back, then drop the floor out completely to rustproof the tunnel.
Vendor products: My dad and sis got me the carpet kit for Christmas from 914rubber. It will be a long time before it's ready to go in, but it does encourage one to keep plugging.
So here's the front corner with all the rust cut out. You can see the floor (which transitions into the steering tunnel), and the edge of the firewall inside that, and the fwd edge of the tunnel through that. There's a box section that reinforces the well that also needs a patch.
This is the inner-most layer and the first piece of new metal on the car. Super happy to get this in.
Next few session are going to involve building all these layers back up. Hopefully I'll have some more exciting posts coming up soon. Passenger side long will follow.
December update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=114780&view=findpost&p=2274444
Reinforced the rear suspension ear and shock tower and finalized the mounting for the engine/trans.
Engine in its final resting position
Had to move over the pass trans mount to be able to get the transmission where I wanted it for equal length cv joints.
Received a BUNCH of goodies but most of them are for the small stereo.
Also received my temp controller for my water to air intercooler. Pretty cool product!
And a pic of the motor/turbo just for fun
I still look at it every time I go in the shop. I AM going to get something done in the coming months, I promise. Have been getting things in order to help free up some of my time so I can work on the car.
Shoe
December update:
My tow rig is fixed, and I'll be picking the car up and bringing it to the new house in Utah sometime next week.
The main setback was the part where the transmission went out in my truck, and while they were in there I had them put 4.10 gears in both axles. The pulling power increase was definitely noticeable!
included is a picture of the car, under the cover, waiting for me to come pick it up and get back to work on it.
Relocating switches up resources available.
The next step is the flywheel. It needs machined, and then bolted with the clutch and pressure plate. After I get that step done, I can machine out the holes for the starter.
Attached thumbnail(s)
December update:
Spent a lot of time working on other peoples cars.
I did get the parts car torn apart and mostly removed.
Dad really wants to stand a bunch of these up in my back yard and make a "porsche ranch". Notice its MY back yard.
Worked on engine tin.
Challenges:
Time.
And the idiot who put old stripped flat head screws in my header pad.
No purchases were made.
Budget:
-$1000.00 Original purchase
+$200.00 sold 2 sets of seats
+$400.00 sold targa top, center counsel, muffler, and sun visors
__________
- $400.00
-$300.00 for the 75
___________
-$700.00 In the hole
Goals next month:
Swap dads MGA project out of the shop and put the 75 in. (He is in Florida for the next three months)
Sell some of the "easy sale items"
Get to work on the rear quarters.
914-SHO Project
December Progress: Finished the right section ahead of the rear jack post and welded in the jack post from Restoration Design.
Continued cleaning and prepping the underside for primer in spots. Also drilled remaining holes in center console for access to do rust-proofing, it will also aid in routing the new fuel lines and tying down the break lines.
Challenges: Cold weather & short days. Making room in the garage to continue work on project.
Vendor Participation: None this month.
Pictures:
Here's the area near the jack post that needed rebuilt - before & after.
Had to form up my own pieces
Then added the jack post from Restoration Design
Have all the holes in the center console. Now just need warmer weather to do rust-proofing.
Needed a work bench so that I could take down the two folding tables I was using. This and possibly a 10x12 shed should give me enough space to work in the garage and still keep a car in the other stall.
Happy New Year! This is Amy (Brett & Amy) and this is my first post! Brett has been working on cutting out the rust on the Porsche and says that he is 80% rust free. He was initially using a sawzall and all his blades broke, so he is going to switch to a jigsaw. Wish us luck!!
Also some parts arrived from restoration design and hopefully well be welding them in soon.
-Amy & Brett
A. A brief description of the progress you made on your build.
December was a tough one but I made enough progress to be well setup for work in the New Year.
• The cage from Tangerine is now fully installed and tied into the rear shock towers.
• The shock tower to trans supports are in and looking pretty good
• Started having conversations with blasting places, American Stripping in Sacramento is sounding like the right place
• Investigated engine and trans options
Mostly I was held up with finishing http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/488187-help-me-style-beat-up-old-912-a.html and getting it sent out the door. We had to add another radiator, install a trunk carpet kit, and take care of a thousand loose ends. Now that the 912 is wrapped up I can finish http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/361808-project-deutsche-coupe.html: new Rennspeed RSR bumper, custom tegris splitter, installation of Wevo rear swaybar mounts, relocation of fuel pump, fixes for a few engine oil leaks, and rebuild of my 915 box. Its been a busy couple of weeks!
B. Any unexpected challenges you encountered this month, and how those challenges were handled.
So many challenges with my other projects taking time away from the 914. Solution: bust ass and get 'em done.
Tying the cage into the suspension points was tricky for two reasons:
• Finding DOM tubing is nearly impossible. I was able to source a 10' stick from a local racecar builder who declined to be named, but I did not expect it to be so hard to find
• Attaching to the rear points was relatively easy but attaching to the front towers looks tricky. I need to investigate other peoples methods before attempting it, I want to make sure I get a complete weld and Im not sure how to get the MIG into a few places.
C. Whether any shops/vendors provided any services for the build during the month, and the value of such services.
• Unnamed racecar builder provided me with 10' stick of DOM to finish my cage, paid market price.
• 914World.com provided me with loads of pictures to study for cage installation ideas
• TangerineRacing.com provided me with prompt and helpful feedback on my cage installation
Images:
Unfortunately I don't have any of the full cage install yet!
Heres one from early November to hold everyone over until tomorrow, I'll take a few in the morning I promise!
I made some additional progress on my 914 project over the last week. Below are some pictures showing the wiring harness installation, dashboard and heater controls installation and a good start on the headlights.
I am finding that the assembly time is only about 15% and that finding the parts and cleaning them is about 85% of the time for reassembling this project.
Oh how I wish I had labeled things better and taken more pictures!
Jeff B
First round voting will start this weekend. If you haven't posted all of your updates please post them this week, in this thread.
Round one posts will close today. If you haven't posted your updates through the end of the year, post them now. Round one voting starts this weekend.
Ok challenge update so far !
A) Brief description-
It's been a messy few months since the last update with hospital, burgalaries and Christmas ! So with the shell straight at the front and rear welding has begun, the pedal assembly is now in its proper position with everything welded and I'm now moving the other necessary items to the right hand side of the car (e brake, steering column mount, dimple in the long) the bulkhead is going to be the trickiest part as I want as factory a look as possible.
I also removed all the tar pads from the floors ! thankfully everything was great below them.
I've completed some nice items for the project, the front suspension and brakes are ready for when there needed ! I built my triple gauge ( couldn't resist ) amd i've also started to modify my trailing arms for 911 ebrake set up
But all in all a bit here and there but we're moving forwards,
Vendors involved-
PMB, 914 Rubber, tangerine racing and 914 member John
trial fit of pedal assembly, 911 pedals
Welded in the new pedal floor pan, and old trar removed.
And I've been side tracked a bit and built these bits !
For those of you working on your judging, I made a table that helped me organize and judge the builds, thought I would share it with you.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/tq876kx1q8aykpa/Build%20Off%20Challenge%20judging%20Q1%20Blank.xlsx?dl=0
Also the way I judged it was as follows (NOTE: This is not the official method of judging, just how I did it to make coming up with numbers easier)
Progress: 3 points possible per month for progress, 1 point extra if progress was steady and documented well
Difficulty: Difficulty of the work performed between Oct 1-Dec 31, Many times this involved reading the build threads to see when the work was reported as being done.
Quality: Quality of the work done.
Overall it took me about 3 hours to judge, good thing I woke up early and couldnt get back to sleep..
I also did a score sheet, I found that a few had not posted at all, and some of those that have, posted, we're not completed each month. I found that less then hafe the contestants completed the requirements for posting updates. I scored based on what I found.
Also many as stated were started earlier, and jumped in part way into a build. Just have to evaluate from contest start date of Oct 1
Saturday morning and back to the barn for me, wood stove fired up, and I'll be posting my Jan update today. Good luck to all in 2016, less then 9 months to go!
Great to see the goal of so many 914 being worked on, and shared, being fulfilled.
Thanks again for the motivation from the Build Challenge Group, and all here.

Michigan Build
Thanks Andy. That was a big help.
Thanks Steve the whole project is a blast.
Steve
OK. I admit it. I am lost. Where is the voting pole? I thought that was supposed to be out last weekend? Have I over looked it? Did I miss read? I am just trying to figure out what I missed.
OK all is clear now. I got Steve's email.
My fault. Combination of work, family, weather, and trying to get the voting system to work the way we set the rules of the Challenge up. I finally got it to work.
Yesterday, I emailed all of the Challengers their link to score the builds. The poll for the 914world members will be posted later today.
Voting will be open until January 31st.
Thank you Andyrew for the score chart!
I also noticed that there are several builds that are completely MIA and a few that have seemed to go AWOL, and a few that don't like to post in the challenge thread. I know we said we wouldn't vote anybody out, but we really may need to, it took me close to 3 hours to hunt down progress and do my judging...
The 914World Member voting is now open.
There are two different polls - one for 914World members, and one for the actually challengers. The link below is for 914World members. Challengers were emailed a link to their poll on 1/22.
914WORLD MEMBERS:
Based on the Progress, Difficulty, and Quality of Workmanship of the build, please assign a score between 1 and 10 to each build (with 10 being the most points attainable). A complete list of the builds, and links to their threads, are available in post #2 of this thread.
Voting ends at midnight on January 31st. You can only vote once.
TO VOTE PLEASE GO HERE - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9P3RNHY
Hi Guy’s,
I’ve had a very busy month on my little 914.
PROGRESS
I’ve managed to strip down the car and deliver it to my friends Paintshop. I’ll be helping him remove all the bad paint down to bare metal for a complete repaint.
CHALLENGES
The main one this month was working outside in the winter weather!
PURCHASES
I made a large purchase from 914rubber. I got some front brake rotors from Pelican Parts and some wiring items from Auto Atlanta, plus a few bits from UK vendors. (but unfortunately unable to claim any discount from any vendors due to the time of ordering)
UPDATE
I’m keeping a daily diary and have just updated progress in my main Build off Thread, please take a look and I hope you’ll enjoy!

A few people have asked about a couple builds that seem inactive. After this round of voting we will determine if any Challengers have dropped out (not posting updates at least once a month), and likely eliminate a few builds.
If you think your build might fall into that category (not posting monthly updates), please PM or email me. We don't want to eliminate builds. But we also want to be fair to those that are actively participating.
Are any Challengers coming to Mid-Engine Invasion in Hershey in April? With or without your 914. If so, please PM me.
Also, if any of you are planning to come to Okteenerfest in September, can you let me know.
This was quite a chore just trying to evaluate the builds, bouncing between the individual threads and the main Build-Off Challenge thread.
If I could give advice to the participants. keep your individual thread updated even if it is the same things going into the main thread. much easier to just run through the individual build off thread. at least when voting time comes.
BTW Andyrew, thanks for the chart...
Definitely a big thank you to Andyrew. Very helpful spreadsheet.
I hear you about the time to judge the builds. I struggled with how to streamline it all week. In the end I didn't come up with a better way. The 914World poll is a lot shorter. But I wanted to let the Challengers judge on each of the three criteria individually. As builds drop out it will narrow down and be easier to judge. I hope.
Hi Steve,
What about getting one of the friendly admin guys to put the Build-off Challenge main thread, plus all contenders individual threads above the main title bar in the "nailed" section? (If only for the duration of the contest)
I'm spending a good while searching through multiple pages in the "Garage" section just trying to find everyone...
If all the threads were adjacent then we can see at a glance who's maintaining their build by the dates of last posting etc. Plus we can quickly see who's added to their thread so we can get straight on and read up.
Thanks Steve,
I didn't realize they were listed in the Restoration thread area, (that'll same me time trying to find them in the garage area. Thanks), but they're listed and dated around October, so we can't see who's updated recently?
Also, if you take the trouble to open up each thread, and have any particular thoughts, ADD SOME FEEDBACK! I hope me thread might be helpful to others, but I am also really counting on having some other eyes looking over my shoulder! Thanks guys!
January Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Back at it over the last few weeks, installed 5 Lug package from PMB Performance. Pressed in new bearings, and seals. Turbo tie rod ends, rack spacers, and shorter firmer springs and shocks.
Unexpected challenges:
Had to trim the calipers a bit to fit the rotors.
Vendors:
I purchased from PMB Performance, again.
Progress Pictures:
Let me be the first to congratulate Brett and Amy (he said it was ok to announce it). They are expecting a baby. And the due date? None other than 9/14!
January progress report, Dr. Phil's back to black flipped, goes metallica-copper that is:
Challenge- time, money, etc, body guy moved out of state, my garages is filed.with boxes-
See my thread- house sale, moving,., sold one tub with some parts,
Good news is that gives me the money to actually pay for some work on the car- copper one, so I'm switching tubs. This one needs more work, way more but it's the one I wanted to keep and I couldn't do both!-
I have my jack points and long parts, rear floor pan, etc from restoration design. And a new dash from PMB!!! I actually installed the dash a few weeks ago!
Parts bought: powder coated parts from Bruce Stone!!
Need new paint and body guy!, asked Scott but he says no openings,

January Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=114780&view=findpost&p=2284502
Finalized the trans mounts
Tore the engine down to its bits, sent it to the machine shop.
Got it back the next week. Cleaned, Honed, decked, Balanced, and rods installed.
Tore the head down after the machine shop cleaned and decked it. Cleaned up the valves. Removed all the casting marks on the intake and exhaust ports. Installed nitrite coated stainless exhaust valves, lapped the valves, installed new guide seals, installed heavy duty valve springs (9k rpm limit now). Rebuilt the lifters, installed the cams, new cam chain, seals, and torqued everthing to spec. Head is now ready to install.
Plastiguaged the new coated bearings to ensure proper spec and installed the oil pump drive with new seals.
Adding a January update.
Progress
Not much progress this month. I had hopes of working on it all winter by heating my garage with a combination of kerosene and propane heaters but then I read the posts of the problems causes by using combustion type heaters in a sealed space. I am mostly concerned about rust so I have decided to only use electric heat in the garage but given some of the low temps we had even that wasn't possible. I'll only be able to work on it on mild weather days - I just don't have enough electric heat to make it comfortable nor do I want a ridiculous electric bill.
I did start cleaning some of the contacts on my wiring harness. I'm trying a few different methods, mostly vinegar and salt to clean and water/baking soda to neutralize afterwards. I had some success with although I think I wtill try the vinegar/salt solution in an ultrasonic cleaner. That should give the same results only more quickly. All in all the harness isn't that bad. There are a few pieces that will need to be replaced and a lot of it will need to be re-wrapped but it's not as bad as I had thought.
I did get some more metal pieces to add to the to-do pile. Other than that, no real progress this month.
Pics will be added <here> soon.
Challenges - Cold weather. Solution - Use electric heat when feasible, otherwise just wait it out.
Shop/Vendor services provided - None
January Progress still in rear boot hell I might be slacking on the 914 but slacking on the work being done in the shop.
Fixed:
Ford Escort - redid a few items, car deemed not worth the investment.
Chevy Cobalt - redid a bunch of items
VW EOS - pulled the nose off the car to change a windshield wiper pump
VW Jetta - Pulled the bumper off to get the low beam head light bulbs in properly
In process:
VW Rabbit - being rebuilt now
Chevy Truck - tranny blew, will be rebuilding that one soon.
914:
Rear Bumper all mocked up, need to
Rear Trunk - All mocked up, need to
Couch slave cylinder all mocked up, need to finish the
Wow see a trend here
Rear Tail lights, got a bunch of euro lenses, my NOS units from Germany, have cracks. Company blames shippers, shippers blame company, box only damaged on one corner.
Spoke, sent me my LED tail light boards, just got them today
Time to move on to something new, Rear Wheel wells, or engine compartment
I do keep copious notes in my build tread.
This was the month of health chaos. First I missed a weekend of work because I was sick, then a weekend because the wife was sick, and then I missed a Sunday and another weekend with the eye injury. I think I only actually had about 3 days working in the garage. In those days I got the inner rocker panel welded in, got the 914 fully up on the rotisserie and stripped some more stuff off of her, cleaned off some surface rust, roughly trimmed the excess on the rocker/floor/long seam (pictured below), and rehabbed and welded the whatever that thing is called back into place (pictured below) using some scraps of trimmings where needed--this is whose grinding tried to take my eye. Got the all clear (after Wednesday) from opto to get back to the garage, today, so here's hoping for a better February!

your well ahead of me. nice work
914-SHO Project
January Progress: Not a lot this month. Focused on removing wiring harness & relay board, steering column, lower dash, upper dash. Been working indoors gathering all my wiring notes and details. I already have schematics made for motor and modified 914 schematics - just need to combine them into a plan since it'll get a whole new set of harnesses.
Challenges: Cold weather & short days. Need to attempt to remove the dash frame with the windshield installed. If it becomes a major hassle I'll just remove the windshield and wrap it for storage.
Vendor Participation: None this month.
Pictures:
Wiring and dash removal
Steering column out & dash frame left.

Still every day to work.
What a month this has been….
I’ve made real landmark progress this month by getting all the old peeling paint off the body shell and down to bare metal. Everything inside, out, upside down and back to front was carefully prepared and the car now wears a splendid coat of fresh Alaska Blue paint.
In the meantimes this month I’ve been up at 4am, working relentlessly on parts to go back on the car, leaving for work at 7am, getting home at 6pm and working on parts again until 11pm; then Groundhog Day…..
My biggest challenge this month apart from the cold weather is staying awake at work!!!
In between I’ve found and cleaned up a new rented garage for the 14 to live in when it returns from the paintshop.
As per usual I’ve kept a daily photo diary of 914 ownership and edited it to post on here for my Build-off Challenge (edited only as after being awake 19 hours a day for a month, I do find I write some drivel)
So as with the last few months…..put the cat out, make sure the Dog’s done its business and the wife and kids are in bed, get the beers ready, sit down and buckle up for this months instalment from the crazy Brit here on my Build-off-thread

914-SHO Project
February Progress: Very little this month. Doing some indoor prep & design. Located service to media blast body for paint removal. Now just need to request a qoute. Decided to go with plain metal panel for dash - painted body color. Saw someone offers carbon-graphite dash panel with red or orange in it, but thought that might be too "tuner-looking" for my taste.
Have a short list of parts to order to close off the trunk firewall, trunk lid, and engine lid.
Challenges: Garage storage. Need to get a shed soon so I can reclaim space from the kids stuff and equipment I only use twice a year.
Vendor Participation: None this month.
February Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=266259&st=0#entry2252638
A. Progress
Bought an engine + transmission
Bought all the body panels in fiberglass from Rennspeed.
Bought a seat from a friend
Bought an MR2 shifter
Finished the floorpan drop
Fabbed and mounted seat rails
Fabbed a "center tunnel" structure for mounting shifter and seat belts
Fabbed and installed suspension adjusters
Reinforced dog-ears
B. Challenges
Money, haha. Lots of money out the door this month for the engine and body, will need to reset and get some funds together for the next round of parts I need. I need to get pedals and a radiator to finish up the fabrication on the chassis, then its off to media blasting and paint.
C. Shop/vendor provided services
eBay.com - engine + trans, MR2 shifter
Rennspeed.com - full fiberglass body (hood, trunk rockers, rear quarters, fenders, bumpers, valence)
February update.
No seriously an actual update!
I got a lot of work done to the arse end this month. I repaired my repair panel, the trunk mid section and the rear truck corners.
I also set the quarter and trunk lid in place to line every thing up.
Challenges: Rust, always more rust!
I still have to get the nerve to weld it all together (any tips?) and the I can fix the corners of the fenders.
Unfortunately I still have not used any vendors or shops.

I really impressed of the build/workmanship guys are doing
in this build off. It' helps me keep on track.. thank you all!! Wes
This month's progress:
I feel like I got a lot of work done, parts ordered and we are moving.
Hitch is done as of today, until it gets off the rotisserie.
Sub straps mounts installed
Shoulder harness strap mounts mocked up, driver left shoulder is done.
Working on the engine mount, I am moving away from using the -4 mount and going off the firewall. It is welded up, and ready to be installed, cleaned the chassis, and minced everything up.
Other significant items:
All 4 fenders cut off, so I can get in there and work.
Will be working on the engine compartment next month. And rear suspension console re-enforcements.
BTW, I have been keeping track of the cost of this build. Not bad, but I have ordered quite a few parts that are not going into the build When your doing as much customs work as I am, sometimes you have to purchase an item in the hope that it will work out. That being said, I am well above 500, so I would be a hall a famer if this was baseball.
This month was definitely better than the last, there were no injuries to hold me back, and the only challenges were getting a new class of students (the first 2 weeks are a lot of work) and the in-laws being in town.
I received nothing from vendors, still waiting/hoping for free stuff...
The work done was: 1. Cut out the bad section of the floor. 2. Finished off the lower firewall. 3. Finished the front engine tray. 4. Finished the upper firewall. 5. Welded in the new floor section.
I guess my biggest challenge was finding sleep, getting fabbed pieces to fit, and most of all getting the rear corner of the floor piece to sit flush on the long. That corner stuck up a few mms (a cm + on the very end) while the rest of the piece fit perfectly. I figure the issue was due to me fabbing the inner long and not getting it exactly right. I fixed the issue by doing the first couple plug welds where it did sit flush, then hammering the piece down, doing another plug, hammering the next and so on all the way down the line.
The floor was one project that I am extra happy that I have the rotisserie.

.........just another day in paradise ... er ... the garage
Well january and February were wet and cold so a lack of work was done to the car, i rebuilt the front calipers and steering rack, ordered some more parts and unfortunatly that was about it !
vendors used-
PMB
Ebay !
next month i'm fully back on the case another year older but ready to go !!!
Brake rebuild looks nice
This month I have had a lot of help from Mark at 914Rubber both technical and financial with the discount. The discount has really helps since I have replaced almost every piece of rubber on the car. The most helpful tip when trimming the rubber strips to the correct length was to put soapy water on the knife blade. It cuts like butter with soap water but without the soap water it grabs and gives ragged edges.
I got the new stainless fuel lines installed this weekend along with the clutch cable and speedometer cable.
I have started to assemble the suspension components which I hope to start installing sometime this week.
I still have a lot of work to go but I am making some progress thanks to a milder than usual winter!
Jeff B
Now that my friends is ORANGE
Traveling right now so no access to pics.
With the cold weather I only had a few hours of actual work on the car in February but nothing worth documenting.
I'll load a pic when I am back later this week.
No outside services were used this month.
Congrats to all who have made progress.
February Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Well, still on it. Worked on the hood to eliminate the headlamp doors. I, know, it took me a while to convince myself to do it. The pop up headlamps are a great feature, but.
Unexpected challenges:
Getting the cut correct, on both sides of the filler pieces.
Vendors:
No chance to do that this month. Not that I don't want to!
Progress Pictures:
The rest of the hood, and more @ http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772 Thanks for the look.
February progress.
Got the steering rack finished and installed, along with the struts and sway bar.
also installed the new bearings and Elephant Racing rubber bushings into the rear control arms and got them installed.
So it has suspension now.
Looking for all my old pieces of brake lines to use as patterns when I bend the new ones.
Although I boxed and bagged everything when I took it apart. I didn't label the boxes. Duh....
so I started taking things out of the boxes and writing down what was where. one of these evenings I will enter every thing into a searchable file, so I don't have to open 3 or 4 boxes just to find a part. also making notes of anything that needs to be done to any of the parts. and threw away a bunch of stuff, like old vacuum hoses and spark plug wires etc.
good cold weather project..
Yeehaw.. UPS just dropped off my Fastenal order... new caliper bolts..
February update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=114780&st=480#
Gaped all the rings and assembled the engine 100%.
Ran into a few problems with the build, one was inferior new parts from a high end custom house. Fabbed up something I could have just built myself that does the job better...
Ran into clearance problems with the oil pump shaft and had it milled down and balanced.
Installed the oil pan, clutch/flywheel/pp, trans, and put the 100mm axle flanges on the trans with new seals/hdw.
February progress.
Purchased a bunch of stuff from 914 rubber....How complete is the rubber kit?
Ordered custom cv shafts.
Engine cradle 2.0 is built and engine is sitting in the car.
Currently working on building cable shifter.
If I get time will plst pics in my build thread tomaro.
February update for my build: as expected, due to selling and moving no building or purchases took place. As I posted in my thread, I switched tubs, and sold the black one, so most accumulated parts will go on the copper tub. Even more in fact. Since this car is more complete but needs more rust repain, it will be more extensive .
Longs and jack point repair, fender stretching and engine rebuild up to a 2056 are all going to happen,!!!!!!! As will a sanding off of the old re spray and new paint.
So I am kind of starting over in a way, have new funds rom selling my wheels and tub, and can move forward soon!!!!
I will post new pictures and list out what I have done already and what is in store..
Ultimately I decided that since there are so few copper metallic cars, even less that are nice condition -I only know of one nice one and that is Jim hoyland)
That I just could not make myself sell this car. So in my new house with new garage we begin again!!!
So after a brief 914 hiatus we are back in the drivers seat both figuratively and literally. Amy started on removal of the vinyl and track for the seats.
And i guess i should explain the brief hiatus because it is exciting news. We found out Amy is pregnant and having a baby in the month of September. If everything goes as planned ill be driving that littler bugger home in the 914 on 9/14. We are very excited and have both spent our 914 hiatus getting our nursery ready and just all that stuff that comes along with that two pink line news.
Progress
Amy
I started to remove the seat covers by removing the old staples.
I was able to keep the bottom cushion and seat forms in tact, thankfully. I decided to wait until we got the new seat covers we ordered online before I completely removed the old covers.
Hopefully, I will be able to re-trace my steps and put the new ones on with ease! We are doing a buckskin and black theme on the new ones. Wish me luck!
In the meantime, I plan to remove the back pad covering and get started on that with a new kit that we bought. The back pad will be black and should match the seats really nicely.
Brett
I have gotten around to removing more cancerous rust and also have finished scraping off all of the rubber that was stuck to the bottom floor pans and i was pleasantly surprised with the quality of metal underneath.
I did find a few bad more rust spots that i wasn't really expecting next to the ebrake handle so now i will have to remove that as well.
There is some rust near the front and im not exactly positive how to address it. I can cut it out pretty easily but i dont think id be able to reweld a panel in very well so we will see.
Challenges
Competing Priorities
Motivation
Welding
I really am nervous with cutting the frame because of my lack of welding ability to put the car back together. This week i plan to build a rotisserie so that i am able to flip the car up and measure a bit better.
Good news is that i have been practicing my welding and have gotten proficient enough to weld up two bikes.
$ Spent
As for the items purchased, we bought the following:

Still every day to work.
Put off posting a February update, the 18 degree temps were not a great motivator. Got some good work done in January and February, though. Got the front passenger side corner mostly put together, so the long will have something solid to connect to up front. Then, since sitting on the garage floor did not seem so appealing, I figured I'd work on the tank a little.
Here's the corner weld-up. Cut some out of all three layers you can see here, and started welding in the patches I fabricated- before & after:
This is the clean up of the tank, done using electrolysis- before & after:
Only real challenge was convincing myself that sitting on a below-freezing garage floor would be worth it.
Not sure if group buy stuff and things we get from other members should go in with vendors/shop help, but I did get a set of LED taillights from Spoke, and 914werke helped me with the suspension mount up front. Thanks guys!
Is it possible to join in even though I'd be getting a late start?
The second round of the Challenge will close on March 31, 2016 at midnight. Voting will begin on April 1st.
We want to recognize the top 5 Builds (at the halfway point) at the http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=274412 on April 16th. So take lots of pictures of your builds.
Build-On!
Any Challengers that are coming to Hershey, for Mid-Engine Invasion, can you PM me.

Here is a good http://www.rickswoodshopcreations.com/miscellaneous/rust_removal.htm on how the process works, been used for years.
Well how time flies!
I can’t believe we're in Month 6 of the Build Off Challenge already.
This month my little 914 came home and I’ve started building it up will all the bits that have been refurbished.
The biggest challenge is working in a 8’ x 16’ garage with no power or light. It’s so narrow I can’t open a car door without pushing the car outside into a public car park, so it’s not the best place to do a full rebuild, but at least its undercover.
This months been a real rollercoaster of a ride with great highs (putting new stuff back on the freshly painted shell) and deep lows (where new parts just didn’t fit well)
So with Easter holiday weekend coming up, get comfortable and please take a look at my monthly update.
Enjoy.
Regards
Darren

Time flies indeed. Too many things going on this month. Continued welding in the front corner, anxious to get to the longs. I feel like progress will feel more tangible then. Biggest challenge is still making time. Nothing from vendors lately. Looking forward to a better update next month.
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.
I have been making some good progress on the car this month. I have gotten the suspension mounted along with the steering rack. I mounted the calipers and the next thing on the list is to make new brake lines. I am using the copper nickel brake line material since it is easy to work with and doesn’t corrode.
Jeff B
............what is this and it's function?
.........got it .................thanks.
Update for this month.
I have backtracked for a good cause, I hope
I am redoing my engine mounts, and transmission mounts.
More work on the engine compartment and adding support items for the engine swap.
Mounts are in for the fuel filter, Breather catch can, Cooling system over flow catch can, and the Coolant expansion tank. Harness mounts are also done, and re-inforced for my and my co-pilots safety. New setup allows me to have the harness and standard road seat belts in place.
Items from 914World Vendors.
Used parts from lots of people out of the classifieds, Thank you
Spoke has worked his magic and got LEDs, so I am almost 100% LED in the lighting department.
Bunches of items sourced and solved via others build threads, I could not do my build with out the ideas, and information I garner for this forum. I Thank all of you.
Some Pictures of the progress
March update.
Still doing bodywork. (will it ever be done?) Pass side is pretty good now in primer, still have a little more work to do on the drivers side.
stripped and primered the rear trunk lid. still have to work on the front and doors.
got the suspension installed last month and put on my PMB rebuilt A calipers.
fished the brake lines through the tunnel and installed the brake limiting thingamajig. also rebuilt at PMB.
Found out the tub is a lot heavier to move around with the suspension on it, especially on the driveway seams. may either need bigger wheels on the cart or just put the steering in and road wheels on. Don't really want to get paint on the Fuchs though.
Purchased the paint. PPG Concept single stage. and a new spray gun.
Vendors used
Spoke for the LED lights
Bruce for the Pedal set.
and some stuff from the classified.
Thanks to all.

March Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=114780&st=498#
Put the engine in for what is the last time unless I absolutely have to remove it.
Got a stroke of luck and due to the placement of the engine/trans I was able to use stock VW bus CV joints with my adapter on the hub side and 100mm flanges on the trans side. These are the same axles in the Renegade hybrids 500hp axle kit. Even bigger plus is I can go to the local parts store and pick up replacements.
Ran my AN 10 lines and my return line. AN lines are a PITA!
Welded up my stainless 3" mandrel bent exhaust. 2 small resonators, I am not anticipating quiet, but it should be OK for now.
Heat shield made
Stainless water line connectors made
Alternator bracket cut and mounted and belt/tensioner installed, then revised the water pump input pipe for better clearance and mounted the pump.
The rest you can read on my thread! Lots more to read and see!
I'm posting because it's required, although I got essentially nothing done in March. Did some wrapping and cleaning of the wire harness but even that has been put on the back burner.
Here is a pic to show that the car is still here and that no outside work has been done.
Congrats to all of those who have made progress and to those who are seemingly writing a book on how to restore. I don't know where you find the time or energy but it is inspiring.
Challengers - Please post your March updates as soon as possible. We are trying to get the voting for the end of Round 2 underway as quickly as possible this time.

March update
Got some work done. Rear trunk is pretty well done. I have to add the muffler shield but I will hold off on that for now.
Moved on to the Pass rear quarter, but am having trouble getting everything lined up. Oh well.
No new surprises, no help, no vendors.
March Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
On to the headlamp's. Goal motorized headlamp's in the front bumper. With a solution for headlamp laws.
Unexpected challenges:
After thinking I was all set on location, actual fit changed the idea 180* so lots of restarts.
Vendors:
Picked up a pair of conversation kits for the front turn signals.
Progress Pictures:
The rest of the headlamps, and more ( in addition posted a trick for fixing dents in dash pads)@ http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772 Thanks for the look. And thank you to all who voted and viewed the "Michigan Build"
Vysoc - Yellow Submarine Build-Off Update Jan-Feb-Mar 2016.
Unfortunately, Golf Season in Florida and my career have taken precedence over my Build. The sale of my Daily Driver turned into a 90 day odyssey that went through 4 different buyers that all backed out for varying reasons?
Alas my 914 is off to England in the next week to an awesome 914 World Member that races historic cars. I know he will be very happy with his new toy!
So, my plans are to jump back into the fray as our snowbirds are heading back up north thanks to a mild winter and early Easter.
We received over 17" of rain in January this year where the norm is 1"?
That made for a manic amount of golf played at my club in February and March which cost me all of my 914 ambition....but everyone needs a job to pay bills.
So basically nothing accomplished for me in the last 3 months and I now will refocus on my project and get as much done as I can during April and see where things stand going into the hot Summer.

That should make somebody very happy
Very nice offer thank you
March Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=266259&st=0
Build progress :
• Bought a radiator (Celica GT) and mounted that sucker in.
• Started mounting the body-panels. I've got fenders, quarters, rockers, and hood all mounted up. Trunk is next.
• Bought a Subaru fuel pump and sender
• Researched the hell out of cooling options, intercoolers, body panels, fasteners, and just about everything else...
• Got a bit sidetracked and built a rotisserie for my buddy's Z car
Unexpected challenges:
• Racing fiberglass ain't the best solution when you're trying to build something "worth showing off", heh
• Fiberglass work is dangerous to your health, sanity, etc
Vendors:
• Bit of eBay for some latches, Subaru fuel pump, and some dzus fasteners
• JWest for their super-cool trunk mount points

Local hardware store for some nuts and bolts.
March Update - http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=82421&st=440
March Progress: Not a lot this month. Been piecing together sheet metal to close off the rear firewall at the trunk. Going slow.
Challenges: Other priorities and family.
Vendor Participation: None this month.
Pictures:
Progress:
We have spent the majority of the month getting organized in the garage after insulating and drywalling. Got my first actual workbench and and tool chest. Turns out not having a place to store tools leaves you in a constant search for the right tool. Who knew?
New Workbench
Before
After
Shelves
I still have to install the some insulation in the ceiling rafters but figure i can do that in chunks.
For progress on the Porsche, i got the rear trailing arms off and started prepping for paint.
Amy finished removing the existing seat vinyl and backpad vinyl last week and started reupholstering the back pad.
Hurdles
Time and motivation continue to be my biggest hurdles as I find that not knowing clear next steps befuddle progress. Hopefully having a workbench and place to store/organize my tools will help with motivation. It was a real bitch working in a freezing cold garage where i would spend 35% of the time looking for tools. Very discouraging.
Baby Update
Everything is going along swimmingly and Amy is roughly halfway through. We decided not to figure out the sex, boy or girl and just hopefully not both. If it is both well shit happens i guess. We had both of our roommates move out but one kid moving in for a few months until the kiddo arrives. Can't blame em but boy sure will miss the 1500$/month in collected rent.
This is Amy. We are buying a little 914 onesie for the baby and we can't wait to take some pics of the little cutie when he/she gets here. I am currently working on getting the nursery painted and were putting in new trim, so I am definitely distracted from the Porsche at the moment! We should have the baby's room all squared away soon so I will have some more time to work on the interior. Stay tuned...

Well, Month 7 is upon us and I’ve made good steady progress this month.
Again I’ve managed to find time every day to do something on the car.
This months achievement is getting the Dashboard refurbished and back in, including refurbishing all gauges and controls.
Challenges this month were still finding problems and faults that I’d not known about. Wrestling the blower box seals (plenty written in other threads) and finding ingenious ways to overcome them.
I’ve made a start on a tool for helping refurbish my wheels and also made foundation repairs for retrimming the rest of the interior.
Again working in a tiny garage is the biggest hurdle, which has resulted in me having to work on parts from the car in my garden, my small shed and my sons bedroom!
So please take a look at my Build Off Thread and I hope you enjoy what you find.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=247250
Just got home from a month-long vacation and can't wait to get to work this weekend! Vacation was fun even with all of the time spent with in-laws...
Needless to say, no progress was made on the 914 in April, just as no progress was made in March due to the finger incident, subsequent infection and resulting pneumonia.
April came and went.
Lets see Vendors supported, Tangerine Racing, Chris makes great stuff, and since I am working on suspension points, Chris is getting some of my dollars.
AA- order placed a while back, and they shipped me a set of euro - rear repo lenses. One was not assembled correctly, and they fixed that, shipped me a new replacement, and a mailing label with postage paid for the return. That turned out way better than I thought it would. New side of AA, I can sure hope.
Trip to Hersey was a success, got parts I needed, from painted bumper, thanks to Garold. Picked up more 8x15 Centerlines, these things seem to be following me home now. Promptly got sick with an upper respiratory thing, that sidelined me for a week.
Sad part is not as much work as I would like is getting done on the 914, this month new motor mounts went in. Nothing like doing things twice to make you feel productive.
Engine was dropped again today, so I could move the shell out of the way. DDs all need scheduled maintenance, so that is what I am doing this weekend. Needed the lift so I could do the timing belt on my TDI. Got fan switch replaced on a Chevy Cobalt, and Oil changed in my wife's EOS. TDI is torn down, will get the belt done, oil change, frost heater installed, water pump replaced, normal stuff.
Well, April has sucked for progress.
Surprises: The door won't close.... so I just sit there and look at it. Doug will come by and we will see if we can save it. It just barely won't close. Also now it rubs the latch.
Vendors: no
April Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Headlamps on hold, still working out the bugs.
On the interior, I changed out a early "sinning leather" for an early "leather". I like the more flat sheen of the now installed interior.
Unexpected challenges:
As I said the headlamps are going slowly, but I am making progress. The interior I had stored for years, was warped on the corners of the back pad, and the door panels also needed some work.
Vendors:
Again PMB, 2 sets of studs, seem to always need something. Also had a exchange about windshields with ProSource Glass international

Been a busy week, so I havent had time to put my monthly update here.
Figured out the clutch slave mount, need to add an extra reinforcement to prevent flex.
Ditched the aluminum intercooler tube and went with a stainless steel one. Shouldnt have any issues here.
Finished up a bunch of coolant stuff and ran a pressure test only to find a leak in my hot side stainless tube. I will need to reweld the leak this weekend.
Then I went to Italy, Germany, and France... Drove the Nurburgring, visited the Porsche museum. You know, normal month
Pics and video in my thread of Europe.
More pics in my thread, but its just a little to the right. Im not using a cable gas pedal so thats why I put it there.
Got it. Love your other thread!
Embarrassingly no progress for our 914 baby this month and with no progress, no vendors or no unexpected challenges.
It's been a more productive month so far ! And hopefully more to come this month, the rear of the tub is pretty much done floor wise just waiting on my local shop making the e brake bracket for me, there lasering it out and folding it for me, there wouldn't have been enough metal left on the original to move the mounts, I've mounted the front and rear bumpers for a trial fit ...... eeek the rear is away off so we're moving steadily !
So vendors used 52 fifteen ....
There's more on my main thread
Well May has be back on track. Doug L. came over and saved the day. We went from this:
To this:
After I took the fender back off and fixed some of the problem spots, I reinstalled it and after a lot of finagling, I got it back in place.
No vendors, but lots of help from Doug!
Biggest problem was figuring out how pulling or pushing on this spot moved all the others.
Month 8 has flown by and like all previous months I’ve managed to find a few hours each day to work on the car, and update my diary late into each night.
Achievements this month,
90% of the interior is restored and back in, and the car is starting to look real pretty.
Challenges.
Again it’s been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Things didn’t go to plan, my friend breaking the windshield I’d spent hours carefully removing from the car and cleaning up, the trimmers continually having trouble with the knee roll (that in the end I had to re-trim myself) and issues with parts. On the flip side with a little perseverance as a whole the car looks fantastic and much better than hoped for.
Purchases.
Still working through the large box of parts from 914rubber, some parts from Porsche Centre and some disappointing parts fro AA that will be going back!
With just a handful of months left now in this 12 month build challenge I feel that the light at the end of the tunnel is near and I can’t wait to finally get to drive it!
It’s an epic read this month (it sure took me a good while to write up and photograph) so thank you in advance for taking time out to read my ramblings.
:-)

May Build Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=114780&st=540#
Sadly it looks like I needed to extend the harness a bit.
Luckily I happen to know a guy whos done this before Thanks Mike Bellis for your hours of work!!
Also got the shifter mounted yes its crude. Its temporary until I get the center console built.
Video of action. Loving the location
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yz_uBNnIPE
Finally got some 2ga wire for my main power lead to the wiring harness. Way overkill but it will ensure I have plenty of supply power. Backing it up with a 250amp inline fuse.
Next months goal is a running engine!

May Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Headlamps have become a daunting task. Each time I think I have it right, I over think it and start again. The housing is not square, the tuBe for the monts is on a angle. When rotating the housing the geometry changes. I'm getting close, and looking at additional lamps in the turn signal buckets.
I found disscustion about turbo tie rods, well what I got from eBay a few years back looks now to be fake. So....I got a set for a great price here on the form and installed them correctly. Much better with the steering stops, and now I have the bellows to.
A lot of catch up and correction this month. Found the front spacers were to large, poor clearance to the fender. Originally I had 10mm in the rear, and 20 in the front. 10 all around should work, waiting on the new front spacers to arrive.
Unexpected challenges:
Many, as explained above. Also camara with a phone failed yesterday, so pictures lower quality this month.
Vendors:
Customadeonly.com (spacer's aluminum)
Progress Pictures:
The restoration car is coming along nicely, never started a blog, or link on the car. Just posted a few here and there. I will when finished post the whole 13 year complete story.
soon to come back to earth. (Tires touch the ground)
Sneek peek:
All the rest @ http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772 Thanks for the look. "Michigan Build"
May Update:
Daughter got married, and the event went off extremely well. With all the sleepless nights I got a few things done.
Tangerine Racing rear shock mounts installed, and welded up 4 rust holes in the trunk. Finished welding my engine mounts into the car.
Vendors used:
Tire Rack
Ebay
Tangerine Racing
Rebel Racing
Elephant Racing
Jegs
914Rubber
Simple Digital Systems
and my friends Boxster S stash of parts
Most troubling issue, ran out of mig wire, which means there is 49 pounds of the stuff used in the build of this car, I would say 90% of it gets ground out.
Frustration number 2, is it seems my rear trunk has a gravitational pull of its own. Just when I seem to be moving on, I look up, and see light shining through the trunk floor.
Car is getting uglier per day it seems, and no light at the end of the tunnel, it will be so worth it when it is done.
Olympic Blue Resurrection May 16 update.
Well I have continued to work on the body, I just haven't posted anything about it. I mean how many pictures of a couple fenders in primer can people stand.
lots of work trying to get the lips on the fenders to look just right. I think I finally got them.
Many many hours into this.
Finally I think its good enough.
Also decided to finish the trunk lid.
it has the final paint on now.
Next step will be to get the paint on the tub. So I will block this down hopefully only one more time ( Ha-Ha ) and shoot some real paint.
I can't wait to start putting it back together.
(still have to do the doors and front trunk lid though.)
Vendors :
Picked up some parts at Hershey. And met a bunch of fun people.
HOLY PRIMER
I didn't do anything much myself on my car this past couple months, - but that is about to change - I did sort a short in the harness at the injector, replaced and injector, then drove the car 1000 miles to Connecticut , Manchester that is!!
Home of CFR , where there were many fine examples either completed or close, of some of Chris's work.
-ordered a front trunk seal from 914rubber,
-took car to CFR
on the agenda and already started as reported from Chris, with pictures in future
- began rust repair of rear longs and floor pan under drivers side,
- checking out engine
1. Compression numbers came back very good- @145-155 on all 4, and
I guess leak down was pretty good, going to be reevaluated once timing , valves etc get set or rechecked. - if my motor weakness is just a tuning thing, then I will be able to do a couple other things on that front rather than a rebuild:
a. sport header from CFR and SS performance muffler from CFR, with improved oil cooler from CFR,
Chris may post a few pictures of the rust repair, and the fender stretching/repair as it progresses.
expectation is to bring the car home once this stuff is done, and re-paint will be the next step- that may be by next month!!!!
- so the big vendor donation for this month by far is CFR - that deposit for work is what I paid for the car!!!
now on with the
I feel like I had a great month in the garage.
Progress: Welded on the seatmount support, the jackpoint triangle, fabricated the upper wheelehouse hellhole, cut out and welded in a few sail panel sections, got an awesome new dog, welded in the door sill, shaped the door jamb, and welded in the suspension console!
No support from vendors this month.
Challenges: Fabricating multiple pieces with compound curves, getting the inner suspension console lined up, neck issue is affecting both shoulders' range of motion, and probably worst of all some lords made some trades and my serf ass got reassigned to what is a "prestigious job" driving for a person of significant rank, but the long hours and stress of the other duties are not worth it... (it seems that this is what you get for over-performing). I guess it won't be too bad a month or so from now when I adapt to it, but it goes to show that you really don't know what you've got until it's gone, but whatever I'll make this fun too. I'm really not complaining accept for the extra long work day and the occasional weekend.
Many thanks to those who've helped me here so far and an extra special thanks to those who will continue to help me. I'm really looking forward to June in the garage and moving on to a new section of the car. The 914 will get extra special attention since it is my therapist for real world stress and annoyance.

Month 9 for me....
It started off at speed and ended with an emergency stop.
The challenge this month was not with the car, the weather, the tiny garage, vendors or new defects to deal with…..my challenge this month was literally not to die…..
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=247250&st=0&gopid=2365107&#entry2365107
June was the I survived my first month in a new position at work during the craziest month of the year and it's over 100 degrees in my garage so I'm just going to sit in front of the TV watching sports drinking beer month.
It wasn't completely wasted though. I did accomplish to fabricate and install the dreaded Suspension Ties. And I also gained the courage to explore the haunted bondo forest that is the front, right corner--removing at least a can of filler. Maybe I didn't do much physically to the car, but I did a lot of strategic planning on how to proceed.
Challenges: Learning to play with 12 gauge sheet metal and actual realizing and internalizing how much work still remains.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Well the month is almost done, and very little progress.
Vendors supported this month
Tangerine Racing - for your support Chris
Rebel Racing - To support Chris' efforts and to give me more brakes than I will ever need.
Ebay - found a stupid deal on 996 Brakes
914 Rubber - Tartan
Autohaus of Arizona - wheel bearing dust caps who know these would be that hard to find.
Spoke - Jerry makes great stuff
What I did do
New Trans from an 05 Subaru when it, and I get to redo my trans mounts again. And weld the huge hole I cut in the rear trunk for the slave cylinder back in. Everything clears, so the trunk can look stock. No cutting needed, got to love that.
Finished seam welding the shock towers.
I cut out the other -4 engine mount on the passenger side, took off the lower triangle for the jack point donut. Need to fix the hell hole.
Up next is the rear trunk hinges, and that is about all I want to do there before I get the suspension points moved. So I will be moving into the cabin to do a bit of work. Then maybe the front trunk. Lots of work to be done still.
Baby steps, Baby Steps
June Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress:
After a few road tests and adjustments, to shake things out. I ended up with 5mm rear, and 10 front for wheel spacer's. (Also remember to tighten your front strut tower bolts, before! Your first test drive.) Believe me, what a bizarre feeling.
Re-Adjusted the alignment, and good to go.
Primed and painted the rockers, used mar-Hyde Black satin, and Transtar 4313 chip guard. After the black satin, spray at a distance the Chipguard and find the look you want. (The primer backed set is for the restoration car)
Started the long tast of finishing the flares with body filler. I hate to use much, so lots of grading, and sanding to keep it at a minimum. Also did the hood.
Unexpected challenges:
Summer in Michigan, not unexpected but never enough time to enjoy.
Vendors:
Flaps: body filler, primer, and misc.
Progress Pictures:
The rest, and more @ http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772 Thanks for the look. "Michigan Build"
This car is looking great
Round 3 will end Monday night, July 4th. So, post your updates. Only 1 more round to go.
It's time to start thinking about a trophy for the winner of the build-off. If anybody has any ideas for the perfect trophy I'd love to here then.
June build update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=114780&view=findpost&p=2354753
Routed all the wiring and mounted the relay and fuse consoles.
Mounted the gas pedal and modified the pedal cluster for the sensors required.
Got the computer to connect to the laptop which meant the majority of the wiring was good and nothing was a major issue
Oh and this happened.

See my thread for more details and pictures.
July 1st update for Build-Off Challenge.
Took the motor out of storage and started to tear it apart for a camshaft swap, I will also be adding 911 swivel adjusters to the rocker arms.
Still undecided on fuel management right now. Waiting to see if Jake chimes in again on my engine build thread on what direction to go with it, I am open to all known good options.

Build off challenge - Third Quarter Update
Finally got some color on parts that people will actually see.
Turned out pretty good. still will need a cut and buff, but that can wait.
Passenger side needed another coat of high build primer and I should be able to get paint on this side this week.
Still will have to do the doors and front hood. but I will be able to start installing parts into the tub.
moving along.....
Awesome paint & body work. Nicely done!
914-SHO Project
June Progress: No major progress for the last couple of months. Just minor bits & pieces.
Challenges: Other projects. Needed to get my garage back so I could work on 914. This meant getting a shed for all the kid's stuff & my sons 914. Then of course all the stuff had to be moved from the garage to the shed - after building a lower loft in the shed, etc, etc, etc.
Vendor Participation: None this month.
Pictures: None.
Just put detailed updates in my build thread...
PROGRESS this month: I cut the passenger side long out of the car and welded in the last piece of the front corner in preparation for the new long.
CHALLENGES: I don't think I've mentioned this yet, but overhead welding has been a challenge. I'm not using a rotisserie for a couple reasons, one being that I think total replacement of the longs needs the car to be level so that it can be made straight. I'm sure some will disagree, and have good counter-arguments- maybe I'll try it different next time.
VENDORS: No vendors this month.
I wore my 914 Challenge t-shirt today!
I would LOVE to post a picture or something, but I'm going to ask Chris at Tangerine to do that- I'm hoping he has taken a few of the progress. If not, I won't have documentation. So, Chris, if you happen to read this and you find a minute, post a couple pictures......
This is the engine bay before the engine was installed.
This is the engine bay with a motor which is even better!

Month 10 continued……
Despite all the setbacks from the TIA, the Consultant thankfully found no lasting brain damage. I’m still having many ongoing tests and have to stick with the Medication and low cholesterol diet until they can find what caused it.
The good news after a month is that I can drive again. For someone who’s raison d'être is cars, it’s the best news ever!
Progress on the 914 has been good in cramped conditions and bad weather setbacks, the whole underside is restored and repainted, front suspension and brakes refurbished, rebuilt and back on. Wheels part restored and the wheel bolts refurbished. A little self indulgence was had on making a neat 316 Stainless Steel fuel manifold for the Carbs in the engine bay; and the engine lid was re-assembled.
We only have 2 months left now before the end of this 12 month Build-off Challenge and I’m on track to have the car tested by the UK Ministry of Transport so that after many years sitting un-used it can be returned to the road and enjoyed again.
Thanks yet again for taking time out to read my ramblings and please check out my Build-Off challenge thread. I hope you find it entertaining and interesting.
pre my Official July Post, here's a sample.

Finishing up details underneath the car this quarter. Purchased a lot of nice rubber parts from 914 Rubber. Top notch parts and service. The new front trunk seal is a huge improvement over the 1st generation seal so I would highly recommend it to anyone.
I am amazed at how well many of the other builds are coming along in this challenge. Nice to see so many 914's getting restored.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo NICE
July Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Wanted to solve the leagal height issues for the headlamps. So July was spent on installing lamps in the turn buckets.
Unexpected challenges:
I have seen others try this, and new I wanted 3 things :
1. To adjust the headlamp independent of the buckets.
2. DOT car headlamp rating
3. Lens that looked factory.
Vendors:
None this month
Progress Pictures:
The rest, and more @ http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772 Thanks for the look. "Michigan Build"
Well no real progress on the 914 this month. Progress ground to a halt on July 4th, after I tried to modify my fingers in a 12" disk sander.
Chris Foley has almost all my parts done, just needs to ship them out.
As of today I have been working on my Fathers trailer as that is what I was doing when I got bit.
Gross picture of the carnage to follow, look away if you don't like this stuff.
Could have been much much worse, and I am very grateful it wasn't.
Also ordered a bunch of safety equipment, and sprung for a set of Mechanix fabricator gloves. Well worth the price.
July update:
It was a fairly productive month. I did a bunch of cutting and welding on the driver's side. Repaired what was once the jack post area which also required repair on the jamb and sill, patched up some rust spots on the floor and lower firewall; I also ran out of welding gas so I have the e-brake cable guide ready to go and the little area on the sail panel ready to weld. To be further productive in the days without gas I removed the foam and seal sealer from up in the jamb/sail panel as well as the rear corner, then moved on to begin with the frunk seal channel (wire-wheeled to check out the damage for future repair) as well as took the wheel to the antenna area in preparation for filling it in, and removed some more components. We also got a new dog! August will be busy with work with some stuff scheduled on the weekends, but it's still looking like it could be pretty impressive month in the shop.
Challenges: still mostly just health related and their second and third order effects for the future of the build. Build wise, the biggest challenges were working in some of the tight spaces up in the jamb and under the fender, it was especially challenging since my shoulders don't go some directions and my hands go numb when I move in others (mostly overhead) but the rotisserie and resourcefulness overcome these challenges.
Once again nothing from any vendors.

Olympic Blue Resurrection July 2016 update
Got the final paint on the passenger side.
So the tub is completely painted now.
Next up stripping the doors, blasting them and getting them ready for paint. then the front hood.
I'll have some better pics once I shove it outside. But these will have to do for now....
Also I can get busy installing other parts.
July Build Update:

I fixed a bunch of wiring issues I had, finished up the intercooler, and started working on the dash.
Things are going to get really interesting, really fast!
No real progress this month. Just messed around with the brakes. Still trying to get the right rear quarter to line up right.
No vendors no surprises.
So this is the July update, a third of the way into August...
Last month, the entire passenger side long came out. Spent some time removing the motor mount and suspension pylon to see if any of it was salvageable. Doesn't look good. I'll probably try to fab the motor mount, doesn't look like anyone makes them. Not sure which way to go with the pylon, was looking at Tangerine's product for inspiration.
I had two long "blanks" made up at double thickness, i.e. the stock thickness plus the thickness of the stiffening kit. I figure this will save some cash and time. Did the fab work to turn them from "blanks" into longs:
Currently working on a scheme to get the car levelled on only three mount points, so I can fit all the long bits and get them welded in straight. More on that next month.
Vendors: No vendors this month, but the local shop that bent my steel.
Difficulties: Time as always. I'm enjoying my build, never enough time to do what I want to do. Sending a kid off to college this month, work is crazy, all the usual. I did ruin a pair of short with the angle grinder. I'll save that story for another time.
What is with this summer and fingers

It represents a tremendous amount of effort as so many on the World already know.
Let’s keep the effort moving forward!

Month 11.
There’s been a lot of good progress this last month with the other challengers build off threads, I’m really enjoying reading them, lots of impressive work going on out there, keep it up guys!
For the first time in 8 years this little 914 is up and driving and has been saved and is loved once again….
It’s passed the stringent UK MOT testing and is declared fit for use on UK roads.
I have to wait a couple of weeks now for the Title documents to arrive before I’m able to drive it for the second time ever!
http://s265.photobucket.com/user/DarrenLCollins/media/Import_Containers_2014-12-08_144_zpsnvzphqsw.jpg.html
http://s265.photobucket.com/user/DarrenLCollins/media/914%20MOT%20001_zpswyyl22vp.jpg.html
Having worked relentlessly for 11 months, these last 2 weeks are going to be the toughest.
To take my mind off it, I plan on hand flatting and polishing the paintwork. It’s had 6 months to cure and harden, so it’s a good time to get it looking like a $million glass finish paint job! (I know it looks great in the picture above, but its no where near my expectations, so it needs improvement to make it truly great)
Another challenge that’ll be in this tiny 16ft x 8ft garage with no power or light……
Thanks again for all your kind words of encouragement and I hope you’ll find my thread interesting reading, here.....

August Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772
Build progress :
Coming into the last 14 days, and wanted to just address little things over that 14 days of September. So I have spent a ton of time on the engine build, and install. Oil cooler, twice and alternator both failed. Visited our "World Garage" and found help with the engine. Theres a link back and forth in my main post. Running great, and hope it stays that way. Want to thank all of you for all the inspiration, and support. And the Build-off Challenge for getting me off my ass.
Unexpected challenges:
Oil leaks, errors that cause oil to leak, and stoping oil leaks.
Vendors:
Lots of motor oil, and more oil.
Progress Pictures:
I have been ask If I'll make it to Okteenerfest, I'm working on the thought, a little, its a long drive, for a just finished car.
The rest, and more @ http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772 Thanks for the look. "Michigan Build"
I finally took my car for short test drive. This has been a long time coming but it really felt good to drive it.

Still have lots of little things to do but that will always be the case most likely. At least another 914 will be on the road.

August has come and gone.
And I guess I can say I am still working on the rear trunk.
Challenges: Finger - it is getting a lot better
Vendors:
Paragon Products
Tangerine Racing
Amazon
Evilbay
And 914world classifieds
Beyond that can't believe the year has almost come and gone. My 914 is a lot closer than it sounds, and I had fun doing the challenge.
So do we have a second year challenge. We could have a return from the previous year group.
So it was the month of disaster and disappointment. I only managed a couple hours in the garage and welded up my driver sail panel area and ebrake guide rail thing. It was the month the 914 account got wiped out and the build budget busted to zero so I bought nothing.
Attached thumbnail(s)
This month was a lot of measuring and adjusting the support in preparation for the new long on the passenger side. Did a little fab work. But excited to be close to having a new solid backbone in the car.
No vendors involved this month.
Difficulties were a tree falling in the yard, taking up car time. Also, had another 914 related distraction which I will post about in another thread.
August build Update: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=114780&st=606
This month has been spent with a considerable amount of time chasing those little things.
I spent quite a lot of time with my tuner, Spent quite a bit of time fixing little engine issues, I cleaned up the wiring in the center console, I did a considerable amount of driving, and I spent a lot of time on the dash.
After about 3 months of discussion, back and forth and with Mark @ 914 rubber we finally got my vinyl pressed for the factory basketweave pattern, expect this to be incorporated into the interior.

I know its been a while since I rapped at ya and I want you to know that Amy & I have been some busy little bees since my last 914 post. Unfortunately the Porsche & 914world competition were placed on the proverbial back burner while other responsibilities took priority.
So starting in October I went with my wife Amy to go wash our cars at Green Mountain Car Wash located in Lakewood Colorado. The parking lot was packed tighter than a pair of wranglers at a rodeo. We spoke to the owners who were both in their late 60's who were looking to put it on the market and get out of the business. After a refinance and 9 months of countless trials and tribulations we can finally announce that we are the proud co-owners of Green Mountain Car Wash!!! We closed on the wash on July 15th and learning the ropes has been eating my free time for lunch and dinner.
Alright so that was excuse #1 and as many of you know my wife was pregnant so you can imagine what excuse # 2 will be.
We are very excited to announce that Amy gave birth to our beautiful son Wylie Ryan Arnold born on August 23rd. He has been a hell raiser since he was born and we don't expect that to stop anytime soon.
On to the 914 news!!!
So things have leveled off at the car wash a bit and we are getting back into a somewhat normal routine (if you can call it that) and I am getting back to working on..... You guessed it. My 914. I am resuming work by getting it up onto a stand that I built and onto wheels so that I can move it around the garage when the wife wants to pull in. She got dinged with hail a month ago and it did $6,800 so getting the Porsche more mobile was also a priority.
That is all the progress on the Porsche as of now but I am happy to announce that we are back at it again!!!

August update:
Lots done- brought the car home from Tangerine-
New floors, longs , pedal area, metal work on the rear fenders, so finally installed Restoration Design parts that I bought back in January or so.
Recent purchases from 914 rubber - sail panels and front trunk seal, new gas pedal, - but I have much more to order- also made a template for the front trunk mat for cocomats to be made to match my existing cocomats in the car-
Then due to depletion of funds, I pulled the plug on getting car painted- the guy I was booked with had done some really nice cars but the second time I met before my scheduled time to begin project , well the "estimate changed by 40% increase- can't afford that so when the day came to get it done I cancelled.
So no paint before okteenerfest
But it's ended up being a wise decision, because I called up Bob Woodman here - local Porsche shop- and explained what I was up against and it turns out he has a metal worker body guy that has done some really nice work on some 911's and looks like he can do the finish work on my fenders AND full prep for paint!
This will start next month and I am confident that it will be done right, seeing their completed projects- they use a different paint shop than I was going to- one that I happen to know but also was on the list from World member Bill Dunster- they do use the PPG Deltron product he suggested !
But just for now I need to make sure the car is ready for the trip. I had a very noisy fuel pump amd that was replaced last week, and running better. Also more tune up- going into Bobs shop just to recheck the alignment and balance after all the work done on longs and floor. then just to have better clearance , I have 6 newly restored 16x6" Fuchs coming from Alex at Magro Wheels in Tampa that will go on the rear and I will take the 7's off for now. If once the paint prep and body work is done buy Woodman the clearance is still less than 1/4" I will not put the 7s back on- they may go up for sale. I'm not going to risk ruining a new paint work and body work that has been done- I love the 7's but the 6's look great too - really if I had done that in the first place would have saved myself a lot of time trouble and $$-
So I guess that's about it for now- I wound complete body and paint before end of contest- but it will be done, done right- done well . Best done right so I don't ever have to do it again!! Just like the floor and long repair that CFR/Tangerine did! I will not ever have to do that again-
Dr. Phil
Right I'm back ! Mojo restored finger working !!
Finished the NON 914 work so the brownie points are earned !
Firstly I wore my 914 T shirt on holiday, very cool and vey proud !
So the proper work started , the damage need to be cut out to let the bumpers fit so that I don't need the inch of bondo that was previously there ,
I'll keep pushing on now I'd been racking my brain on how to repair this, I'm happy with the fit now
So cool to see some cars up & running. Congrats guys! I don't think I'm gonna make it by 9/14/16. Hope they'll let me re-up for next year's challenge.
914-SHO Project
July/August Progress: Just minor progress. A portion of the underside is now in primer.
Challenges: Other projects. Family first. Life.
Vendor Participation: None this month.
Pictures:
About a week to go until 914 Day. The projects are looking great. I am real curious to see who wins. It is a tough call. We will make the polls available on 9/14, and keep them open until 9/21. The winner of the Build-Off Challenge will be announced at Okteenerfest on 9/24. I can't wait.
I was ask if I'm going to Okteenerfest, Now I am.
I was ask for a painted picture of the car, (that was not in the plan) Check out my Build page. And no more "asking".
Iv got to stop working on this car, Im finished with the contest, hit my 5 major goals, yet it never ends. So Im taking a short break, till tomorrow.
Please post your final build updates by Wednesday - 914 day. We will begin the final poll on this Wednesday, September 14th. Make sure to post the overall status of your build - is your car drivable, did you meet your goals, etc.
Well nothing will happen between today 9/12 and 9/14 for here it is.
First this has been a great deal of fun, not sure if it made a difference in my build. I have enjoyed seeing all the 914s that where built and on the road, and all the others that where being built and did not make it. Some seriously fine workmanship has been represented and it has been a pleasure to be counted in this group.
So for my progress.
challenges.
Still looking for my clip for the steering rack. I just need to go to the hardware store and pick up a clip.
Still waiting on the suspension pieces to come in. Need to get the suspension to bolt it on, and see where things fall so I can weld on fender flares, and set up for some other work. Like seeing if my oil pan is in low rider status.
Vendors supported:
Rothsport
On other notes:
Finger is fully functional, I survived and have been working in the shop on some other projects. Lots of stuff piled up while my primary hand was down for the count.Working harder than a one armed paper hanger to get them done and out of the way so I can get back on the 914.
I did rebuild two tractors, an equipment and boat trailer in the last month.
Can't wait to see some of you at Okteenerfest. My car will not be present, as it is still on the rotisserie and being slowly smoked via
I haven't done shit to the car.
I had some serious dog drama that killed the budget (not that I was spending anything anyways) which really just took a lot out of my motivation. This was followed by one of my "Hunter S Thompson" months where I just drank and wrote notes. I'm also sitting in a limbo regarding my future employment/way of life, so I couldn't in good conscience make the move to further strip the car for paint prep since I don't know how quickly I'll have to throw the car together to move... I've also rationalized the decisions to pause on the build so I can have more work to do with my dad when I move back to Kentucky next year.
July/August Progress:
Chassis is finally ready for bead-blasting and prime!
Reinforced the rear suspension mounts.
Mocked up the Wilwood pedal install.
Rebuilt my rotisserie to prepare for transport to blasting shop.
Started work on the engine/trans mount.
Got the suspension bits back from powder coating, they look amazing.
Chassis should be off to the blaster early next week, then I can focus on installing the floorpans, and prepping for paint.
Challenges:
As always, time. Had a few good track-days with my 911 and it finally broke down. Spent a few good long days repairing it.
Also, money: I need to put in a big order for suspension bits, putting it off as long as possible.
In all, the chassis-prep has taken much longer than I expected. I thought Id have the work all wrapped up in early May but theres just been so many little details to work through.
Vendor Participation:
None at this time, though I need to order more metal from Resto Design soon.
Pictures:
[attachmentid=567967]
Well... the only thing done on my original TO DO list is installing the Raby 2056.
Since then, I have dealt with several issues just to keep it on the road since my 914 is my daily driver.
With mechanicals pretty much done now (only took 6 years!), rust repair and cosmetics are left. I can live with that
There a lot of great cars in this thing. I am amazed at the work everyone did. It should be a close contest.
It might be helpful to those voting if each challenger posted a list of the primary tasks they completed on the car over the past year, whether the car is "done," whether it is drivable, and how they did on accomplishing their goals.
Month 12,
Thanks again guy’s for the kind words of encouragement in my Build thread. Like I said earlier, there’s some really great work gone on this last 12 months in the 2016 Build-off-Challenge, I’ve really enjoyed seeing and reading others progress on their 14’s.
So on to month 12 and to September 14th final round of judging.
This takes me up to day 350 of my 914 ownership and 11 ½ months of the build. I did a rough count and I believe I found on average 6 hours a day, every week day and somewhere around 26 hours each weekend (not counting my visit to ER when I had the TIA stroke) to work relentlessly on the car. This didn’t include maybe 30 minutes a day writing up my diary for 914world.
So all in all I reckon to take my 914 from an unloved wreck that hadn’t been driven in 7 years, to a car that anyone of us would be proud of, took me 2800 man hours.
Plus 175 hours sat at my PC writing this diary and uploading pictures!
Not forgetting that 90% of this build was done in a 16ft x 8ft garage a block away from my house with no power or light.
As an overseas participant and due to the time line of my build I wasn't eligible to ANY of the great vendor deals or discounts on offer.
So what you see is purely for benefit to others as I took no personal gain from being a participant in this contest. (Apart from maybe a tee shirt to come. I presume we get these at the end Steve? after the final results?)
So…..to bring us up to date, check out my build thread here.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=247250&st=100
Enjoy!
No progress. My tail end of this build has fallen on its face. After not being able to fit that quarter panel, I guess I just pushed it away.
I never even got to the point of needing any of the great vendor deals. Oh well. I did make some progress this year, probably more than I would have with out the contest. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Build progress :
A lot has happen in this month. I was going to just finish up a few things little things over the last 14 days, and then, I should paint the car!, since I'm going to Okteenerfest. So, I sprayed Plasti-Dip flat white. Came out OK, and I can peel it off!
The engine was running some what rough. So I learned a lot about carb adjustment, and balancing. Thanks for the help from our community. That took a while, I'v always run FI.
Changed out the targa sail trim back to chrome, from black. Installed wiper arms, lettering on the grill also chrome, from black.
Drove it and pictures last Sunday. Im done.
Unexpected challenges:
Last second, 3 day labor day weekend paint job.
Vendors:
Local Paint supplier.
Progress Pictures:
Here are some before and after pictures, and a few others.
5 Major Tasks to complete during the Challenge:
1. Replace back half of rear trunk floor. (Rusted, rear ended, poorly patched)
& Replace entire rear body panel, and Bumper. (Rear ended, poorly repaired)
& Patch in 1/2 left front fender. (Poorly repaired)
2. Delete headlamp doors, modify hood, and relocate headlamps.
3. Install 4 steel flares, and modify all valances. 5 lug, and wheel tire package.
4. Build up, and replace engine.

96mm Big Bore kit
Mallory Unlite Distributor 14004
Weber 40 DCNF (w/ very short intakes)
Air jet 1.80 Main 1.25
2.0 L exhaust
5. Major interior renew.
Un-planed:
6. Paint
Misc:
Turbo tie rod ends, rack spacers, and firmer springs and shocks. Also went with a pair of old front calipers I had from the 70's these are Girling calipers, that were tested for use on some VW's And a few other things. Also a stock steering wheel.
I try to use original hardware, and parts, where i can.
Previously installed Dr.Evil rear view mirror, 3rd brake lamp, and Triad exhaust. Sound system 5 way amp, w-sub and iPod plug only, no head unit.
Without the challenge, and all of the members here, I would have never got this done, much less within a year. Since as an example my other project car is over 10 years a work in process.
I have enjoyed working, and sharing the thing I enjoy doing with my free time. I have been an owner since the 70's and still enjoy every view. See some of you at Okteenerfest, my last 914 event was
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=36618&st=0# I took this same car there then. Im long over do.

Well its 9-14 day and my car is not running, so I am not the winner. But like many others that made progress on their cars during this year, none of us are losers in this challenge.
I did make a real effort to get it done in time trying to work on the 914 every day, some days only a little got done, others days I made good progress. Never giving up.
Progress.
Got the body work done, prepped primered and painted.
Rebuilt the steering rack and powder coated, rebuilt and installed the suspension and brakes. Converting to 5 bolt. Refinished the headlight mechanisms and many other small parts.
When you boil it down to a couple sentences it sure doesn’t seem like a whole year’s worth of work.
Challenges were many. From my bodywork inexperience, to finding parts and making them fit. This I expect to continue.
I used many vendors,
PMB, 914 Rubber, 914 Ltd, Pelican, Tangerine and many others that don’t immediately come to mind. Garold supplied some body parts. And a friend, One-Eyed Tony let me regularly raid his parts car.
Thanks to all.
Especially to my GF Debbie for putting up with the massive expenditure of time and cash I have put into this little car. A car that she still hasn’t ridden in after 24 years! It’s been off the road since 1989 , 27 years and counting.
Also thanks to Steve for coming up with the idea for this Challenge and the work he put into prompting people to get their votes in, tabulating and posting the results. And the many of you that voted for my build and kept it around the top 5 competitors.
The end of the 914 Challenge does not end the project.
I intend to persevere until I get to drive this car again.
Tom
some amazing builds here as we wrap up a year of work- I have not done as much as I wanted and simply ran out of time and money, but, the biggest accomplishment was getting the fender lips fixed/replaced and having all the lower longs and floor pan rust replaced!!! pictures and documentation of that work is on my thread, a few were put here too., but I am happy that I can drive a structurally solid car. I do wish the paint was done, but there will be time to do this in the fall, and that plan is scheduled and in the works.
My hat off to all the other projects here but in particular I will mention a few I think are absolutely stunning and have completed their projects:
Darren C : WOW!!! this build was simply awesome in detail and documentation, amazing work and has to be in the top 2 in this competition
Olympic 1.7: what a beautiful car! and completely stripped and completed car with all the detail wow.
- cant think of the name but the Yellow car that is getting sold- right there with these 2 cars as well awesome, I would love to owne any of these cars and hope mine looks just as amazing as yours when I get the paint done!!!!
also so awesome with craftsman ship and work are Garland- , Nutter, Andrew and Trojan -- what great competition!
this was a great idea and I hope I get to see another one in the future.
- what I completed on my car:
all the rust repair with full Longs and jackpoints replaced, floor pans, petal area etc,
New Dash and pad - I recovered the seats myself with 914 rubber kits!! I put in the seat heater stuff, wired it myself, carpet kit and cocomats, the interior is all ess new- door cards from 914rubber/914AP- some other touches,
I cleaned out all the undercoating that was sprayed in the front trunk,
-did the 5 lug conversion for Fuchs, bought new completely refurb 16x6 &7 Fuchs;
-new headliner in the targa top
-new calipers from PMB performance- new brake lines , including fron and back new bearings , bushings , turbo tie rods and ball joints-
almost everything in did was UNDER the car or IN the car -
- new distributor, injectors rebuilt the MPS, planned on rebuild but found motor had good compression so we did not do that just tune and go
To celebrate 9-14 day (and because I liked very much John’s (Garland) photo montage) I thought I post a few of my favourite pictures from my build. Some that I’ve posted before and some you guy’s haven’t seen yet….
Starting with my very favourite picture…..enjoy

0 progress in the last month or so since I've taken apart my motor for a bad camshaft and broken exhaust studs.
I honestly thought at the beginning of this Challenge I'd be further along, oh well it was nice seeing other people do some great work.
beautiful car Darren C
Plus, Darren's detailed posts have really helped me in my own project. Thank you Darren!!
Final Update:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=248776
In the past month I have spent all my time painting the engine bay and underneath and installing the motor and everything necessary to get it running. Luckily I was able to start my car for the first time yesterday and it felt great. The plan is get the car on the road in the next week.
I have a long to-do list for this weekend but I'm going to take a day off work on Monday to try and knock it all out. I went ahead and contacted the insurance company today and plan to go to the DMV the end of the week to get it ready for the road.
Vendors: I have spent most of the my money at Restoration Design, 914Rubber, and PMB Performance. I have been pleased with everything and the discounts/sales have really been great.
Unfortunately with this build, I got a late start. Life took too much of my time and money and I wasn't able to dig into this project until this March. So pretty much in 6 months I fixed all the major rust on the car, painted some of it, rebuilt the motor, and got it running. Back in May I made a schedule for this build to meet my goal and I'm happy to say that I am only about a week off from that schedule which is pretty incredible given all the work and items that popped up during the build. Not too shabby. I will say though I'm looking forward to have some free weekends after I get this on the road.

Andyrew's Build Recap:
I had a fantastic time with this build. Lots of ups and downs, but I accomplished more in my year working on the car than I have done on the car through its 15 years in my hands. I always wanted to do a custom engine conversion and this was just that.
What I didnt do yet.
Complete my custom interior
Integrate the Audi ABS/Stability control system
Integrate the Audi Heater/AC system
Roast the tires in third gear (SO CLOSE! If My tune was right I could have bumped the boost up)
What I DID do! This all took WAY longer than I thought it would. The past few months have involved a lot of driving and trying to tune the car. I have about 30 hours in tuning the engine and were pretty close to square one at this point as were starting over.
Wiring layout/strip and integration into 914 wiring(Lights and wipers)
A. Finish ID'ing every plug
B. Finish stripping wiring (Dash harness, body harness, and engine harness)

914-SHO Project
Final Status: incomplete
Goals & Progress:
The contest is over but the work is probably never completely done for any of us! Having a full time plus job I wasn’t able to commit the amount of time that Darren did (fantastic job Darren!) but I did get the car to a finished point.
I got it aligned yesterday (three hours) and it really drives nicely now. I took it to a Porsche car show at Gervasi vineyard yesterday (9-14) which was another milestone for me. Everyone was amazed at how nice it looked. This certainly made me feel really good since it was a crazy amount of work to get it to this point.
I can absolutely understand anyone who didn’t get their car done because it is such a huge commitment of time and effort. I really want to thank the Build-Off Challenge for pushing all of us to have a deadline to work to. I also want to thank the 914 vendors who helped especially Mark at 914 Rubber. I also want to thank Garold Shaffer and others on the board that helped out in various ways.
I was too busy finishing working on the car yesterday to get good pictures so I will try to update my build thread in a day or two with some better pictures.
Jeff B

The Final Voting Poll is live. All 914world users can vote here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VYK7P9L
The Challengers have a different poll (more in-depth) that has been emailed to them.
We haven't had many 914world member vote yet. The poll only takes a couple minutes. You can vote here - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VYK7P9L
Steve, thanks again for hosting this. Sure would like to be a part if you're continuing for next year.
Also, did my voting from your link but only got one page.
Replace the plastic shields, with polished aluminum. Then sealed the edges with silicone to waterproof.
Keep the votes coming in. It is a close competition. If you have not voted, the link for 914world members to vote is - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VYK7P9L
Note that, while you can cast your votes however you choose, the first place winner must have completed their car to the point of being able to drive it to win.
Steve,
Your last comment struck me, I didnt read anywhere where the first place winner must have a driving car. Granted the top three cars are all on the road it seems like an interesting thing to point out at this final stage. Can you clarify for me where this was noted ahead of time?
I doubt it will make any difference but if it wasnt disclosed ahead of time I dont think its fair for those that were unable to complete the car to the point of driving.
Got it,
Missed that when I read over the rules on the web site. Thanks for the clarification.
We have been working to finish the trophy. I think whoever wins will like it. I can't wait to see who comes out on top.
Last day to vote.
The polls are closed. The results are tallied. The trophy is being engraved.
The winner is . . . We will announce the winner tomorrow night at Okteenerfest.
Congratulations Garland. After all the votes were cast it was a tight contest.
Full results will be posted soon.
Garland being presented the Build Off Challenge award by Steve Martin and Mark Whitesell at Okteenerfest 2016.
Congratulations Garland, well deserved!
I'm totally taking credit for the Golden Jackstand idea as well!
Much deserved! Good work!
Well Done Garland !
Congratulations GARLAND!!!!!!
Vysoc
Congratulations, well-deserved!
Congratulations Garland, great job!
Jeff B
Bump for those that didnt catch the results that were updated in the first page.
Thanks Steve for putting this on!
Double Post
Yes a big thanks to Steve for organizing all this.
I must also say a big thank you to everyone that voted for me too. It was a close result with not many points separating the board. This reflects the dedication, enthusiasm and quality of the builds this year.
It was a pleasure being part of it all. Thanks guys.
So, just waiting excitedly to receiving the 2016 Build-off Challenge T-Shirt now so I can wear it with pride amongst the UK fourteeners.
Congrats Garland and all the others.....
yippee....I'm not such a loser after all!
We are getting the 2017 Build-Off Challenge organized. It will begin October 15th. The requirements will be the same:
A. Engine - Remove and reinstall or install, if already removed.
B. Significant body work
C. Significant interior work
D. Get the car driving and on the road by September 14, 2017.
We are going to try to cover the progress of the builds in a little more detail this time. Also, we are going to try to keep the dates of the polls a little more organized this time.
ROUND DATES:
Round 1 - October 15th to January 1st
Round 2 - January 1st to April 1st
Round 3 - April 1st to July 1st
Round 4 - July 1st to September 14th
New requirements:
Post monthly. Anyone who does not post monthly will be eliminated.
Vote in each round. Anyone who does not vote in each of the 4 rounds will be eliminated.
We are also considering:
1. At least some progress every month or elimination
2. A small entry fee, to help cover the costs of a bigger trophy, and do some other things we'd like to do with the event. We may do a DVD type thing.
3. There has been talk of limiting the contest to the first 10 or 15 builds that submit to participate. We haven't made a final decision on that.
If your interested in participating PM me.
A big thank you to all who voted for me and a big thanks to Steve for organising it all, to be fair I thought I would be further on but it did spur me on ! The t-shirt was worn with pride on holidays this year, I'm still working away and it will be finished ... I promise
Steve, Any way I can get an XL shirt? My large isnt fitting my fat body..
You guy's got your T shirts already?
I thought we got them at the end?
To quote the great Peter Sellers "I like to watch", I will not partake in the next Challenge, goodbye and thanks for all the fish....
An unknown moving date and an insane amount of uncertainty in the future are causing my project to be put on hold, so I may be back for 2018.
I'd like to try again. Needless to say I still meet the criteria.
I'm out...
It seems I am far enough ahead as to have an unfair advantage...
I will continue to update my thread though..
Thanks to all who voted for me. I really appreciate it.
Congrats to Garland.
I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support and interest in my build. The challenge and 914 world club members, and family in my mind, are a big part of this project. I truly thankful for your interest, support, and help when I really needed it.
Here's some pictures of the first road trip for the build car, Okteenerfest. Put about 1,300 miles on the car . My son Sean drove a second support and rescue vehicle, wearing the correct T-shirt. And traveled with me to North Carolina from Michigan in a second car. He's made this trip before and we were into the twisties shortly into Ohio. It made the trip quite enjoyable, and his autocross experience made for a fun drive, since we all know nothing can keep up with the 914 in the twisties. (drinking the Kool-Aid)
This is a "where is he 914?" look close, its there.
We made some new friends, like Lloyd, a mile up, on the mountain with his wife in North Carolina. Lloyd had film in the camera but two dead batteries, and no email address. I'm sending him a copy of the photo. And Joe at his store on the scenic Highway. Joe is very interested in the car and had some interesting license plates up on the wall.
You may have noticed writing on the car. Since the paint was palisti-dip, and will be peeled off (exposing primer, and multi colored panels, still to be finished) I thought it would be fun to let people sign the car. It was, the comments and funnies are great. Almost hate to remove it now. Pictures to come.
I attended Okteenerfest where at their banquet, it was announced, and I was awarded the Build-Off Challenge golden jackstand award from, Fourteener Motoring Magazine.

FMM & Save the 914............"Garland" Michigan Build........914 Rubber
I've been a 914 owner since the mid-70s, and this experience has been one of the top moments for me. Heres is one other, in the 70's getting ready to go racing.
The Build off challenge has been a wonderful experience, that I was able to share with my family, friends, new, and old members of 914 world. It expanded my skills as I worked on the project and learned new things, and was able to share them with others.
I had a lot of fun with this, thanks again everyone.
