Hi everyone, just introducing myself and my project ! Some of you will have seen this car forsale here on the world, McMark was selling it for J Stroud, it was shipped over to Northern Ireland after a 6 week sea journey .
This pic is it leaving Marks old place
And it's arrival in my workshop
Welcome to the world...it looks like you're tight on space. i can store that other blue car of yours....no problem!
I have mine stripped and on the spit. Will be embarking on left to right as soon as I finish some repairs on the longs. I have one of these pedal units to put in it: http://www.obpltd.com/Pedal-Boxes/Pro-Race-V2/Floor-Mounted-Bulkhead-Fit/3-Pedal-Unit-BHF/Floor-Mounted-Bulkhead-Fit-Hydraulic-Clutch-Pedal-Box-OBP0002PR It will be a historic racer.
Cheers,
Thanks guys, fortunately I have plenty of room I dumped that old 911 out the back field , I have it all stripped down now and up on my ramp, found some accident damage on the rear suspension console and driver side front but virtually NO rust
The rear
Welcome to the Build-Off Challenge, Now it's an International Build-Off!
This is the front damage look like it was run up on a kerb ! It's about an inch pushed up !
The rear suspension console, I'm hoping I can replace the front and straighten the rear !
I hope it's visible the bottom is bent up and forward !
Ok so the kids are in bed and the wife is out so it was car time !! Just to add it beer o'clock here now, I bought some new spot weld bits yesterday and they working great, I drilled the spot welds on the rear suspension console out and it really miffs me I'm going to have to cut a perfect engine shelf to replace the front grrrrr
Now the front I had to remove a very bent support (not sure of the right name) before I could get the persuader out to shift the floor and front mounts back down I'm fairly happy ... Comments welcome ..... There's still work to do on the front panel, I checked the hood fit and it's good so all the damage was below this level.
Once I have the car straight I'll embark on the right hand drive conversion, I'm using a 911 pedal box and I have a second bulkhead and floor section to cut up as I want it to look as factory as I can make it , you guys will be the judges of that so here are tonight's work pictures ... And I'm doing this now
The persuaded front floor .....
The drilled rear suspension console ...
So i suppose i shold set the task list and the goals but the ultimate goal is to have a running drivig car !
Tasks-
1a) straighten body and repair the small amout of rust, lengthen front footwell to accept 911 RHD pedal assembly, move park brake to right side including long indent, move parkbrake cable tubes to right side, move steering coulmn mount and make sure it all mounts up.
2) Have the shell media blasted, fit Maddogs engine mount, inner long kit, chassis kit and sway bar reinforcement and then prep for paint.
3)Cut up dash and weld up as right hand drive, including 911 ignition switch i think i'm going to use an early dash as it gives me more room to play with as there is no dash vents,
4) Paint the car still onthe fence on the colour, i'll maybe do a poll closer to the time
5) While the shells away i'll rebuild and modify the suspension, i'm going for Elephant racing coil overs and bushes, Weiltmister front sway bar standard rear bar (thanks Garold) 911 park brake (Tangerine Racing).
Brakes are 911S front calipers, 911 Rear brakes complete, drilled and grooved front and rear vented discs
6) Build the suspension back in to the shell, wiring, dash, lights, doors, glass. rubber seals (thanks Mark)
Wheels i know what i want but there a supprise ! just need to save up !
7) Hopefully my engine will have arrived and isnt in to bad shape .... freshen and install into car either Carbs or Throttle bodies with EFI knowing my luck it will need a full rebuild !
8)Interior custom carpets due to it being RHD, seats (i may go down the sports seats route) reinstall all the trim
9) pray alot that everything goes close to plan ......
so lots of this abit of this to hopefully do this
What a great project! Looking forward to seeing your work and results!
Cheers!
I was wondering what happened to that car!
I can't wait to see it come back to life, sounds like you have a great plan (and a lot of work).
Good luck!
Looks like an excellent starting point for your project Neale.
I'm interested in seeing the RHD conversion as you proceed.
And I want to see a RHD conversion.
Well I was side tracked this weekend! The front discs arrived so I blasted and repainted the front struts
John Deere green and its really good paint, new inserts and Elephant racing coilover kit, I also stripped and cleaned my S callipers, ordered a full rebuild kit from PMB so they be like new soon!
Really need to get back to the body
Hi all, sorry things have been slow but hopefully the family will be back to full strength tomorrow !
I have managed to do bits and pieces so here goes, I've removed the old damaged top off the rear suspension console
And the important bits arrived today after being miss shipped !
This now allows me to start the bulkhead modifications, so here goes .....
Hi all, been a bit of a random month with no work on my car, and my excuse is my better half was rushed in to hospital for 2 weeks ! Thankfully she's now back home and on the road to recovery.
So excuses given and the work begins again
The main work to take place is the extension of the footwell to accommodate the pedal assembly I'll be starting to cut this weekend keep an eye out for updates as this is going to be fun.
I want to keep the look the factory probably would have left so once I've mocked it up please feel free to comment !
Where in Northern Ireland?
Looks like a nice start and yay for more europeans on here.
Evening all, well Santa arrived early today (aka FedEx) with a load of bits from 914 rubber , cheers Mark all arrived safe and sound
Well I started cutting tonight, I have bits of an old bulkhead I'm using for bits, so I've fitted the pedal holder very roughly and removed the front panel work to give foot room and to place the pedals in the correct place
Still a lot of cutting and tweaking to do yet
It's looking like I managed to get the measurements right ! The end of the pedal rods mounts on the old LHD pedal mount !
Gadzooks! You have your work cut out for you, Nutter. Do those shafts use some carrier or intermediate bearings?
EDIT: I'd like to see some close ups of that pedal assm and/or it's individual parts when you rebuilt it.
It's a complete setup from a RHD 911 so yes everything has bearings and is mounted as the factory does, this is the fairly straight forward bit, I still need to move all the corresponding bits for the hand brake (e-brake) and there's some modification to stop the steering shafts rubbing on the sheet metal .
Outstanding! Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Tony
Hi guys and girls sorry for the lack of updates to say November was a kick in the teeth would be an understatement !
We had a visit from creeper burglars who stole all the keys for my Businesses , my wife's car and my pick up which they also took and to top it all my iPad and oakleys, they then took it for a trip to Dublin and I've been caught for the tole roads and then it was found like this
So my wife has been very upset as there was scumbags downstairs as we slept upstairs, I've been busy upgrading lights and gates and my rifle is now under the bed !
Work will resume shortly !
Ok so heading back on track, we'll sort of, couldn't resist building this up when my bits arrived !
Nearly finished
I promise I'll b back to welding ......
Nice triple build
Yes, really nice gauge. I need to come up with one like that. Mind spilling the beans on how you did it?
I'm glad your gauge worked out for you. It looks great!
At long last i'm back welding .... so the pedal floor pan is in place and going nowhere ! next is the hand brake cable guide tubes, hand brake lever mount and dimple then the bulkhead ...
Came out of the workshop and found this had happened !
Theses arrived yesterday complete with manifolds and linkages
Looks like a big job, but one well worth it in the end.
Will be eagerly following this to see how you get everything done.
In some ways i am grateful mine was already RHD when I bought her
Cheers
Dale
Glad to see that car is getting a new life! Good progress!
A Rifle in Norn Ireland 0-o
Yikes.
Are you PSNI or something?
Im in South Newry/Belfast a lot.
between the lisburn and malone roads. Near the tesco
Ok, a little work done to some bits for the car ! It's just not welding weather .....
I rebuilt my "S" callipers with seal and piston kits from PMB, those DuroAno pistons are beautifully made !
So on to the steering rack next ...
Picked this up from the shippers warehouse this morning, all the way from Phoenix Arizona !
2.7 with the webers i picked up earlier
Hi all , yes I'm still alive ! It's been a strange couple of months, I seem to have spent a fortune on bits and pieces one of which arrives tomorrow, my 2.7 is cleaned and awaiting compression testing but it actually looks good so far.
Easter holidays are now over mind you a week of roller coasters was fun !
When the delivery arrives tomorrow I'll post an update, there may be a comment or to to be made ....
Yeah Fed ex arrived today and brought these !
Pure porn in my book, the sun is actually shining here today so hard to get a good photo .....
Those look great! I dont think anyone has put those on a 914 yet so I am very interested in how it looks!
What sizes did you go with?
Evening all,
Managed an hour in the workshop this evening, I cut and flipped the cable guide plate and then trimmed, blasted and painted the extra set of hand brake guide tubes, ( it's weld through primer) so hopefully this week will see it all welded in to place.
A couple of evenings has seen some progress ! I ended up removing the rear portion of the floor as it had been badly repaired in the past, so the guide tubes are in and a new lower edge fabricated and a portion of floor trimmed to suit
Floor in and tacked
Guide tubes on the proper side
Yeah only two items left to do at the rear ! The hand brake mount and its associated dent in the inner long , I'm having to manufacture the hand brake mount as it's completely reversed!
A little bit of cleaning up to do oh and the floor reinforcement
A little more completed last night, engine shelf welded back in to position and the suspension console completed
I'm assuming the same dog bones are used front and rear ? I have a poorly fitting rear bumper ! The front is fine thankfully
Seriously lacking enthusiasm at the moment ! fitting the bumpers has caused more issues than i'd bargained on !, i wonder if in the shipping process has the rear bumper been flattened a little .....
And on a seperate Note Northern Ireland is through to the next round of Euro 2016 !!!!
#GAWA
Found some motivation today before I went hedge cutting !
After my trial fit of the front and rear bumpers highlighted the large gaps it became clear that the damage was worse than I thought so out with the grinder and I used the front panel I already had in my store .
All looking much better and a quick trial give this ,
Just a little bit of cleaning up and I'll weld it in, then the rear needs a lot to make it fit !
Well the work has progressed ! i spent quite alot of time working on the front of the car as previously told and i was fairly happy with the work so just to make sure everything was good i refitted the hood .............
OMG it wouldn't fit ! the internal rib of the hood was hitting the light box on the previously damaged side ! so after some careful measuring i found the top inner edge of the headlight box was pushed back by 10mm.
i borrowed the porta power from work and pushed it back in to the correct position and then had to start again on the fender ....
But i have to say much happier and also better that the last time !
So i'm thinking about the rear corner now...
Does anyone feel like donating a corner say 6" each side and i'll pay the shipping ? i also need the bumper strengthining bracket to !
mine all seems to be about 10mm out, its been hit and partially repaired but its not in the right place by a long shot !
[attachmentid=572507]
so still a bit to do ....
Attached thumbnail(s)
The dark nights have arrived so its all go in the workshop again ! ( new heater is wicked, far to warm )
So i've finished up the front repair lastnight very pleased at the finish, so i'm moving to the steering column and the park brake next.
i also re fitted the strenghtner within the trunk as well, i'll refit the two tops after media blasting
Evening all, right I've put myself forward again for the 2017 challenge not so much to win but I need the push to keep going ! So I hope I'm allowed in to the club again .....
Progress has been painfully slow this summer, kids, house etc etc excuses I know but there true !
I did manage to source a rear corner from main land UK cut from an original UK sold car ... The car was beyond repair but it gave its life to help others .
As can be seen above I'm really happy with my repairs on the front so I'm hopeful the rear goes as well !
I'm thick skinned (I sell John Deere I have to be) so please comment on my project either way .... I did have a sleepless night over the windshield but the following morning realised I have one in the store !
I really want to at least have a painted rolling shell this time round I would like to aim higher but we'll see , build off or not I'll keep going , keep kicking me please it does work .....
This is great for another UK based 914 fan- can't wait to see the dash work when you change it and the 6 hooked up. Keep going it's great!
My cut arrived today so work can begin on the rear quarter to leave it right ... Onwards...
Well it been a year since we had visitors and I finally managed to get new gates up and to get some work done to the car so its been a good week so far !!
The rear quarter has been more interesting but I think it will turn out well, I split the cut I received earlier and found the expanding foam ! I then cut the car roughly so the work begins
Lots more to do but I'm on the move again ...... at last !
Side tracked again .... 6 style steering column fabricated ....
I like the work your doing so far. Just awesome that your putting it together with parts from across the globe. Here in Southern California I can scrape up about any part I need so I can't imagine what its like. Keep up the great work.
Well, half the family is in Orlando ! So work on the car can resume, it's a right PITA!! Had to rebuild the lower curved section as it was split every which way but welded up and starting to get things in the right place, going to be fun to fit the cut section but I'll trial fit bumper and section tomorrow evening ! Here's hoping...
Quick question, has anybody a good photo of the right hand rear corner from the rear I can use for reference, I could also do with measurements, the height of the lamp hole, thickness of the rib and distance from the base of the rib to the bottom of the rear panel, if somebody could get me these all sort of taken in line with the outer lamp mount I'd be truly grateful !
Another evening of trimming and bashing ! I think it's as good as I'm going to get it now the top of the rubber can be moved up a bit as I tapped the metal downward
, lid fits and the lights all seem to sit correctly ...
Having a cool beer to celebrate !
Looking good.
I think it's an optical illusion, flares were fitted to the car prior to me getting it, possibly fitted by McMark you can see them on the previous pictures at the start of the posts ... there is also part of the original quarter panel on there as well ...
Evening all been welding like a weldy one ! So much so I've run out of mig wire tonight
Well annoyed ! The rear is all fully tacked up and ready for full welding, 4th attempt ! So tonight I started the awkward one cut and cut again to make a RHD dash ...... I want to make it look like the factory might have i.e keeping the glove box and ash tray ... most conversions loose one or other or both ! Well it's top secret ... and very nearly welded together ... reason it's not is listed above
I'll post pics when it's finished as a half done partially welded one won't cut it here ! There's to many awesome fabricators here ...
Here's the final fit of the quarter ...
And yes there is a tiny patch needed but it was the best available here !
Looking good..
I have been working on the project but it's been a slow cut and weld then re cut and re weld !!
I still have the switch support panels to weld in but here it is a RHD pre vent dash with glove box, radio and ashtray slots !
There is a slight angle/ offset on the column but I can overcome this by slotting the mounting holes .
And yes I had to swap the lock from one side of the glove box to the other as well ...
Your repairs and mods are coming along nicely, congrats!
I can only imagine the fun it must be when you try and buy parts and ask for a "driver's side" part...!
Keep up the great work.
Chris
Nice work, enjoying your build!
Keep the momentum going.
John
............that looks "right"
Just wondered how you're getting on? Any progress on the dash. Did you have to section that from an original dash or did you cut it from a new piece of sheet?
I keep checking as my pipe dream is something similar but simply pipe dream at this stage.
Did you source the pedals from an early 911 RHD? Were they easy to mount.
Keep up the great work,
Nick
Hi Nick, well being truthful I'm not making much head way at the moment ! Very busy at work thankfully, I'm buying bits and bobs as I go still, and when my nephew has his car off my ramp and my brother has his Healey up and off again I'll be able to get back to mine, my welder is playing up so I'm getting my brothers and this is all entwined in the above plans !
The dash was one cut up although I will cut another as it all make finishing a lot easier, as when I cut the switch panels at the steering column and turn them I'd need to set a piece in but cutting them from another dash will cut the welds down, now that I've done it it would be a lot easier next time !
Yes the pedals are from an early 911 although not just early enough!!! I need to change the brake pedal to an early one but everything else is the same, my new salesman is also a 914 owner so he's pushing me to get back to it ... but my evenings are spent recovering lately!
Anyway I will get back to it .... promise
Hi all I'm back at it again ! The big plan is to have it in paint before December so the push is on !
Finished all the welding at the rear where I'd set the new corner in all looks good so on to the ebrake mount then the bulkhead, funny when it's all done I can built it up in either left hand drive or right had drive the only bit would be the column mount.
So photo of today's work ...
Another bit completed this evening, yip that's a ebrake dent on the passenger long, soon to be my driver side long ! Pleased with the outcome and will look perfect with my folding ebrake handle .
Evening everybody, to coincide with the world coming back up I have an update as well !
So between the Flu and rubbish weather I've managed to get some help to complete the RHD bulkhead.. i now have somwhere for my feet to live while on the pedals !
Its hard to show how much i've extended the footwell by, but its roughly 6 inches of new metal ! so it's off to media blasting now ... progress none the less at last !
From the inside .. you can see the tunnel has been trimmed and reinforced to allow the pedal assy to pass through
Well it's been a while but the car is all one colour ! It may be primer but it's been media blasted and etch primed, a few small bit to refinish after blasting but all in all it's turned out super !
There's just something "Right" about this !
While I'm here, can anyone tell me the size of the holes for the 6 oil tank ?
All help greatly appreciated
Looks fantastic! What an undertaking.
Hi all on the scrounge ! As asked previously, oil tank hole sizes in the engine bay, what sizes do I need to cut ?
Made a little more headway this weekend, trial fitted my Mad Dog strengther kit and then welded one side in fully ! Committed now !
Well, i've been busy welding away at the maddog kits ! i've the long kit modified and installed, rear sway bar mounts in, front sway bar kit fitted just the engine mount and rear long kit to fit, the etch primer the media blaster sprayed is wicked stuff, its a grinder job to remove to weld back on to clean metal !
Oil tank cutouts are on page 5 of this thread.
“Just arrived in the garage: 1971 914-4 1.7”
Click on my link below to get to the thread.
Have you tried to fit the doors back in after you welded in the Mad Dog Kits to make sure your gaps have not tightened up?
Best to find out now.
Bob B
I love this build, great work!
The stiffening kit is a big improvement.
Keep it going!
John
