914World.com _ 914World Garage _ NEW Group Buy 914 Master Cylinders $110 each

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 21 2015, 05:22 PM

I'm working on having new master cylinders made for the 914's. They are going to be 19mm to crossover for the 911 also. Now you can get a quality part at a reasonable price. These are about 90 days out, but they will be a quality product, that is fully engineered.

Who's in?

I'm in for one.

I would buy at least 2 of them. My '74 needs one that I can't get a good pedal on (kind of scary). I think it is a URO 19mm.

Thanks !

I'm sure Eric can help you on that front. I actually already partner with him on some calipers. The master cylinders we had discussed in the past, now I have a reason to go after this.

I'll join the crowd. I'm assuming this is a proper replacement for a '70 -6? I think mine is still the original MC; maybe replaced the insides about 25yrs ago, but it still holds a solid pedal.

Posted by: mbseto Dec 3 2015, 02:26 PM

I think there was another thread recently cautioning against getting a larger master cylinder with the stock calipers. IIRC, the problem was that braking becomes less progressive. My gut tells me 17mm to 19mm is probably OK, can someone share practical experience?

Posted by: Dave_Darling Dec 3 2015, 06:23 PM

When you install a larger master cylinder, you reduce your "hydraulic advantage" over the caliper pistons. It's almost exactly the same effect as moving the pivot point of the brake pedal.

The 19mm M/C has 25% more area to the piston than the 17mm one does. That means to get the same clamping force at the calipers, you have to exert 25% harder, though the pedal moves 25% less distance.

Most people seem to agree that the 19mm is a reasonable swap, but going up to 23mm (which I believe the earlier thread was talking about) is a Very Bad Idea unless you are significantly upgrading the caliper piston sizes.

If I get the jist Mikey (Mark) trying to put together the numbers for a fair size production run, so he's likely he's going to only be able to do the one size, 19mm.
19mm was likely chosen as it's the best size for a large enough production run to re-coop his investment from both the 914 and 911 crowd.
Likely he can't get the same per unit price on smaller runs for different sizes.

Guess I should have quoted. i assumed 17mm would be covered at some point. Can't you just sleeve the cylinder down to 17mm? I obviously have no clue.

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 4 2015, 10:29 PM

These will be 19mm.

Progress is that we are working on the tooling for the casting now. We have located a new ATE sample and are reverse engineering it. There are over 20 parts we will need to fabricate to make this we have 3 done at this point. Just like making a V2 rocket, but we will be doing some extensive testing on it to. It's being made with under our new manufacturing division. It will be a fully engineered part.

The Boxster MC will be boosted. Without a power assist, you may find that the 32mm one requires a large amount of leg to activate.

I don't know what the piston sizes in the Boxster calipers are like compared with the stock ones. It's good to keep near the stock ratio of total caliper piston area to master cylinder piston area, but I don't know the specific numbers for your case. But that should keep the pedal effort near stock.

Posted by: Mikey914 Sep 3 2016, 10:04 PM

These are still in the works, and the improvements will be significant. Still I wouldn't buy URO again, after having the new master cylinder fail in less than 5 miles! Eric has the ATE's at PMB and if you are doing the job, do it right, and do it once, hey what the heck they are only brakes!

This project is literally like building a V2 rocket, we keep redesigning things. Lets say they will more than likely out last the factory ones! Still months away, but will be worth the wait.

Any improvement over the ATE part?
I just installed a 20 some year old NOS ATE 19mm one.

There are some changes we want to make in the casting, but it's the last part we will be making. It will at least be comparable to the ATE part.

If you have any opening I'd like to acquire one. Have recently installed a URO one and you have me suspicious. Not sure if that's the only reason the brakes are feeling a bit "vintage" but have rebuilt calipers, new lines and a couple fluid flushes.

Thanks,

Very timely.
We have all the drawings complete and have pulled the trigger on getting all the parts made on this. We will be making the housing from aluminum and hard coat anodizing it. The 1st parts will be ready in about 8-9 weeks and we will have a optin for a customization I think many of you will like.

I will contact all on the thread to see who's in. Our initial "test run we plan to do 5. One for my car to test, as well as 2 or each variation. We will be creating a test bed and procedure for these so we can assure quality, then we can release a few of these for testing. This also gives us an idea of how we want to set these up for the main production run.

I'm really excited that these will be a big step forward on quality at an affordable price. biggrin.gif

We wound up having to part ways with the original company we were working wit. Everything was late and over budget, and not just a little. We did get a solid company to work with on these and have made a significant improvement on the part that when shown you will probably want. It will be a small upgrade and we are adding another option that you may want to add, but when this comes together (hopefully in about 12 days) it will be worth the wait.

And I'm not implying that Mark's product won't be equal or superior to what's currently offered. It's just many shops differ from the way a lot of us search out parts. They traditionally order from a couple major suppliers and that's it.

Assembly will follow as soon as we finish 2 more parts (in the next week or so). There was no point in doing up too many castings until we had all parts ready and the coating is one of the last steps here!
I'll post pics as soon as I have in hand

Yes wink.gif
I want peeps who are a bit on the impatient side to realize that these products don't just magically appear.

It takes time to plan, prototype, test, fix issues, 2nd prototype, test, fix issues, rinse repeat, finally put into production, then assemble before a product is ready for prime time.

To quote Homer..."Patience my pet."

Posted by: shoguneagle Jul 30 2017, 04:57 PM

Just knowing the need for critical parts such as the master cylinder AND knowing how Mikey has developed parts in the past everything done will provide a great part. I would take pride in knowing that A UNITED STATES PART PRODUCTION was on my car.

The development appears a lot like how we restore our cars. We expect to complete our cars in 1-2 years; several years we are still working on them and they have developed a reputation of being "jack stand" zombies. This is not the case in what Mikey is trying to do; he has been constantly working, searching, adjusting, etc to bring a new complex product to market for our needs. He has put up with a bad factory builder situation and has changed in mid-stream to move ahead. A lot of "cheer and encouragement" goes to Mikey for pursuing this part development.

What is being done is going to be better the URO parts. 1000 fold better.

If Mikey is doing it, it will be done right; quality, and function will be there.

There is an old tv commercial regarding a kid called "Mikey". This situation reminds me of the saying, "Where is Mikey??? Mikey is out playing with new parts development. Therefore, let Mikey do it!!". I have the highest respect for all his parts he has developed in the past; they are on my 12 year 914 restoration.

Without all our suppliers/manufacturers/developers we could not have supported/restored so many of our 914s that are on the road. They would still be resting on jack stands.

Thanks, Mikey and the rest of our suppliers for taking on large tasks such as this one and getting them completed.

Good news is these have been completely made - All parts are done. We have assembled one and set to an independent party for verification of fitment and some testing.

We've been a little quite about these lately as we want to do these right.

With that being said not all part are 100% US. We were able to source some spring clips and a few other parts. We were happy with the performance, or we would not have proceeded. I wanted to disclose that we did do this, but we unlike the name we shall not mention are actually committed to QC on these parts.

We anticipate word in the next 10 days or so, then full production to follow!!!

Like I said earlier. "Let Mikey do it!". This also means giving credit to all the others who supported and were involved in getting this job done. There is always a little outsourcing but the focus was US made.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 13 2017, 10:32 PM

Evaluation went well, we got over 10,000 cycles on the test unit before the weld broke. It kept cycling for some time, so we are not really shur how many more , but we were comfortable there were at leas that many. Never thought that we should put a kill switch on it, so it cycled for some time after.

Our evaluation as show that the design has worked and we are satisfied on the outcome. The housings are machined and in finishing. Assembly work will begin as soon as we get them back as we are finishing up some of the internals parallel to this. We didn't want a bunch of parts sitting on the shelf if we had to re work the part after we evaluated it. We are on track for 1st parts end of the month and as soon as we all the pieces of the puzzle ready we will open the flood gates.
As I mentioned we are working on some special enhancements to the assembly that as soon as we are ready will announce as some options you can add if you see fit.

Lots of pieces coming together on this one, literally over a year in making. I may not always be the fastest, but I will stick to it until it's done.

I think that's everyone's best guess at this point, although Mark's being coy. Would really make swapping a m/c easier, if not just plain easy.

I'm in for 1.

Great to hear, can't wait to order 1

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 14 2017, 01:50 PM

Yes,
I',m not letting the cat out of the bag yet, but there are some improvements that we have made that you will see an an obvious advantage, but if not we can sell you the "factory" version. Still working out price points, but the stock version will probably be a few bucks less.

Posted by: Calwaterbear Oct 14 2017, 03:12 PM

in for one improved version

Posted by: Ed_Turbo Oct 14 2017, 03:46 PM

Good luck with that Mark. I got a great deal for an ATE so I could not pass.

-Ed

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 14 2017, 03:54 PM

Are you sure it was an ATE? Best price I've seen is 210.
Either way after you see the Improvement that we've made I think you would have been happy to pay more.

We have not made it 23 mm version. For our application that's completely Overkill not to say that we might not make one in the future, but first we are going to perfect what we need for the 914

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 28 2017, 04:22 PM

We've machined the 1st 50 and assembled with the testing just wrapping up. I will post more on the details of the improvements this next week. Just been too busy with all of this to get good pictures and give a full explanation. I spent the entire morning just on the computer getting notifications to all.
I think you will find these worth the wait.
Thanks to all,
Mark

PM me the last name, I can convert your order over to the easy. I'm really happy with the way they turned out I'll post some more details on the easy option this afternoon.
I'll forward PMs to all here shortly for the code.
The link is right here, but if you want the code you have to sign up on the thread.

Placed my order just now. Thanks Mike. I do admire your ambition here taking on critical systems like brakes. We appreciate your hard work. Looking forward to reviews from folks who get these installed. Mine will go in when I finish my brake system refresh. I've got my front PMB calipers, new front hard lines, and soft lines all done. Next will be rear calipers, lines, the "ABS" regulator, and the MC.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 29 2017, 12:20 PM

Working from home today but I can give you a little idea of what the easy option looks like.

We have the fittings made and the fit is so tight on the hose you can literally suspend it by the hose. The clearance on the barb makes it an easy push on. However, we are including the clamps just to make sure there are no problems.

PMs sent to all so far (I think - Let me know if I missed anyone).

Also, we have have sold out all of the easy option. We are in production of the next 200 units and will have them finished up in 3 weeks (or less). The good news is we will keep the GB open until production is complete. The other items on GB will close Nov15th, but we have a whole new grouping of parts for GB that will be ready at that time so the good news is we can combine if you so choose. I can only say that they are a major grouping I think at least a few of you will want. Again with improvements to make your like easier.

Evaluation went well, we got over 10,000 cycles on the test unit before the weld broke. It kept cycling for some time, so we are not really shur how many more , but we were comfortable there were at leas that many. Never thought that we should put a kill switch on it, so it cycled for some time after.

What is the industry standard for acceptable number of cycles before a failure?
10,000 seems like a low number if it refers to the number of times the master cylinder is engaged, but maybe I'm thinking about it wrong.
Also curious if you tested for side-loading.
Not criticizing, just asking after coming across this web site: http://www.hydraulicspneumatics.com/cylinders-amp-actuators/how-we-test-cylinders-side-loading These are what stops the car after all. biggrin.gif

For the record, I'm very happy you're making the part and have already bought one.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 31 2017, 10:10 AM

Well if URO is using industry standard it must be 5 cycles.
But seriously, we did do our homework, and have an outside company (that this is their business) running QC on these (each one) before they ship. This is one of the reasons it takes a little longer in the production cycle on these.

Update on the Easy Kit.
I went to do installation instructions today and noted that one of the components was not optimal. It’s the nipple closest to the foot pedal bulkhead. . We did clear the bulkhead t, but the hose was close enough that it was not an ideal install. We are re-machining these right now and will ship the rest out this last week. For those of you that we have shipped. We will send you the corrected part. We also included the splice hoses longer than you needed as they can be cut to length, but we will be finalizing the cut length to make for minimal cutting.
I appreciate your patience, we had been focused more on the master cylinder itself and the CQ for operation prior to shipping, and even though I had measured this all out before I had not allowed for the hose being installed. I have Taylor working on these this weekend and Carry will be helping to get the installation pics so we can show you the how to.

Sincerely,
Mark

So shipping on these will take place after thanksgiving on all orders placed under the first and second wave of GB with the "easy kit option" included?

Posted by: Mikey914 Nov 19 2017, 12:41 PM

No not quite correct.
We are wrspping rhese up. We have an outside company running QC and are somewhat at the mercy of thier schedule. Thrse are supposed to be ready this week, so maybe some will run into Thanksgiving.

Also the easy kit IS AN OPTION,
You have to select it.
Because the body is machined differently you cant just add it onto the base model. We will take exchanges back for full credit and allow you to upgrade it if there is any confusion.

Posted by: Mikey914 Nov 21 2017, 06:46 PM

The easy kit is a modified master cylinder that allows for easier installation with solid connections. Designed to minimize the swearing required with the OEM version.

Posted by: JoeD Dec 1 2017, 10:05 AM

Mark, I received my new master cylinder with easy-install option; planning on doing the install this weekend. I haven't seen the install write-up- maybe it's buried in thread and I've missed it. Will it be obvious how the easy-install kit connects to the reservoir lines?

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 1 2017, 10:41 AM

It's actually pretty straight forward but I will work on this today so I can send it out to you.
Thanks,
Mark

Posted by: SKL1 Dec 1 2017, 04:30 PM

Mark- you may want to post that here too. I need a refresher on bench bleeding it.

At least with the easy option I shouldn't have to take out the fuel tank!!

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 1 2017, 05:20 PM

We didn't need to either. biggrin.gif

Posted by: fixer34 Dec 4 2017, 09:26 PM

Yes, some instructions would help. Received mine today with the EZ install kit.
One of the threaded adapters was already installed (nearest the bellows); in a plastic bag there is a hose with plastic webbing on it and a screw clamp. In a smaller bag, another hose with 3 spring clamps and the second adapter. Curious why the second adapter is smaller than the first one.

Let us know what you designed to go where.

Mark, did not get a chance to install the MC this weekend. Hoping to get under the car today but it may be the weekend. Sorry for that.

Posted by: JoeD Dec 6 2017, 05:47 AM

Well, the easy option turned out not to be so easy for me, but not Mark's fault.

Got the old MC pulled and removed the reservoir clamp yesterday but ran into a snag. I'm pretty sure someone zip-tied the reservoir lines are together underneath the gas tank, likely just before they separate, connect to the flared tubes and pass through the grommets. Although I have plenty of slack under the reservoir, I can't pull even a half-inch of reservoir line free under the car- impossible to cut and attach the 2 pieces of hose to connect to the MC.

The lines were zip-tied together twice under the reservoir that I can see before they disappear under the tank; I can only assume more of the same under there and that's what's keeping me from being able to pull any line under the car to work with. The lines are definitely hung up on something, somewhere under the tank.

So... going to have to pull the tank anyway, and it certainly didn't save me any swearing. Again, not Mark's problem, but as usual with this car, any "easy" job QUICKLY turns into headbang.gif

So has there been a final write up done yet and sent out? Just want to make sure I don't mess up anything with the switch over to the new MC. And, since it's up in the air and have to bleed down everything I am installing a new complete set of PMB calipers all around.

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 19 2017, 12:15 PM

We have the initial instructions that I've emailed to all that have purchased on Dec 5th. The initial feedback is that the initial set is pretty complete. Bleeding the master cylinder is still an issue. Mostly due to the nature of the layout. I have cautioned to not use power bleeders to bleed the system. This is primarily because I did not test the pressure at which the hoses will leak. The old hoses may not take the load. We have included clamps to help hold the lower section.

These install like the factory master cylinders, but the inlet ports can be mechanicaly secured.

Let me know if you can't find in your inbox.

Mark

Posted by: restore2seater Dec 19 2017, 11:56 PM

Mark,

This was in an email sent to me on Dec. 5th.

"We are compiling our instruction sheet for this part. It is a relatively straight forward process, The big issue was the insertion of the tubes with the rubber grommets. These are particularly troublesome. This kit allows for a much easier installation of the reservoir lines. You will still need to bleed the system and insure that the pedal pin is correctly inserted into the master cylinder.

If you have any tips or tricks you would like us to include we would look forward to your input.

Thanks again,
Mark Whitesell"

Haven't received any other email about instructions since then.

Did you cut off those flared ends?

Posted by: cuddyk Mar 3 2018, 10:27 PM

Yes. My tank and the steering rack are out so I had lots of room to work with, but it’s pretty straightforward. I released the clamps at the reservoir end so I could pull the supply lines down enough to easily cut right at the edge of the metal tubes. The short nipple on the Mc is to the back, and the worm clamp goes around the hose on that fitting, since it’s too close to the bulkhead to use a spring type clamp. The orange protective webbing goes on the rear hose as well. And you’ll need to trim both new hoses to fit, unless you can get them to pop up through the rubber grommets n the tank compartment floor.
