I'm assuming most of us have seen this photo Magnus posted? I know many don't care for him, especially after what happened in MN but still, it's 914 related!

"So it's official- I have caught a Dose of 914 fever , apparently it's a double dose - Stay tuned to see how it goes #porsche #midengine"

Two 914 projects, should be interesting for sure! Do either of these look familiar, did he buy one or both from a world member?

I don't particularly care for the guy, or his hashtagging everything. But I was sorry to hear about him losing his wife several months ago. sad.gif

I think its a good thing. He may bring some fresh ideas to the table.

One thing for certain...... If you have a solid car be prepared for an increase in value happy11.gif

Caught this as well on the 'gram this morning smile.gif
Let's see what he does with them . His last build was a 964 which he claims was his most "Intense" build to date. Keep in mind that he hires drivtrain, body, interior+exterior subcontractors to get it all "Intensely" done. He sure has his work cut out for himself ; topping some of the cars I've come to know here in the last decade biggrin.gif

av-943.gif The guy is a expert at self promotion. He tinkers and looks unique for a "Porsche" person, so people dig him. I get it, I'm cool with it. But like you said, the bar has already been set, and if he can build something half as nice as Eric's car, he'll get a pat on the back.

He has the vision, he hires the people that can make his vision a reality. I think the "intense" part of it was getting it completed on time, lol.

Posted by: 396 Dec 8 2015, 01:25 PM

The first time I met him was 6 years ago when he wanted to buy my 77 with a short stroke 3.2. Over the years, he made a name for himself. The only thing that I think he should grow up and stop racing around the public roads. If anything happens, someone is going to get injured and most of his efforts / financial will go to the injured person. He simply needs to keep it on the track, plus not to glorify his behavior.

Posted by: wndsnd Dec 8 2015, 01:44 PM

If he has "The Fever", that will create more 914 attention. Adding that to Amelia Island and the recent Panorama articles, will create more overall respect in the Porsche Community.

I am guessing he will do a nice high reving short stroke 2.2 or 2.4. Like him or hate him, it will be interesting.

I will reserve my opinion till I hear his 914 comments and driving impressions!

A lot has been said already, but I think the 914 was standing in line for its moments of glory on the Porsche stage. From here on, prices will rise and rise, being the lastaffordable vintage Porsche.

I had not heard about his wife passing, sorry to hear that ; (

Now if I was spending his money on a 914....

Red car ; keep 4 lug and upgrade to billet front hubs to keep 4 lug and have vented rotors...toss the 2.0 liter Fuchs for some Area15/outlaw 16x7 or 17x7 4 lug billet rims that are modern versions of the originals.

I was on scene about 15 minutes after he crashed 277 in Minneapolis. After he sorted stuff out with the cops, I chatted with him for a moment before he was off in a GT3 RS for the tour drive.

Top Porsche brass from PCNA and Germany were on hand for the grand opening of Porsche Minneapolis and they spent a lot of time with Magnus. Like it or not, Magnus is doing great things for the Porsche brand and Porsche recognizes this.

As it was said earlier, once he releases his 914 creation, I'd expect values to climb with these cars. Buy em now and hold on to them tight...

Posted by: Andyrew Dec 8 2015, 04:05 PM

I bet one will get a Raby 4 in the 200hp range, and one will get a worked over 3.6. Flared and narrow body. Subtle changes, Interesting interior colors, full leather everything, big dollar big dollar.

I wasn't on scene but got a chance to meet him later in the day. He said it was the first time he had ever crashed a car. It doesn't mean he's never driven like an ass hat before (we all have seen the videos I'm sure).

It wasn't until I saw the video where I realized that things could have been so much worse...

He's a good driver and he is ultra passionate about Porsche. He will do good things for you 914 owners in regards to the value of your teeners.

Maybe with all of the tweaks and tricks that Magnus can view here on world, he can come up with a total winning design. That being said, he would need to pen another sticker in addition to Urban Outlaw, maybe NIH

I don't see why not. I raced POC/PCA with similarly welded 2 piece Forgelines. This is the same manufacturing method for most of the 17" Fuchs lots of people use on the track.

Popular method for 2 piece wheels, most all major legit wheel manufactures have a welded design to offer something a little less expensive than a true bolt together wheel.

I only met the guy once, this past June at the concours here in Cincy. His wife was there. She did not look healthy, but there was no question that they loved one another. They were both very kind, although she clearly seemed tired of all of the glad-handing. It was pretty hot that day.

Do a little research and see what they did together. It is an "American Dream" story. The kind that I will share with my young daughters - that they were fortunate enough to be born in a country where anything is possible, so long as you have a work-ethic and a vision.

In Magnus' case, he wasn't even born here, but he came here to realize his dream and potential, and he did. That is even more remarkable! And for that, and one laps in judgment, he is being blasted here.

It is very seldom that I am disappointed by what I get from this forum, but this thread is one glaring exception.

I don't mind him that much, he can get a esoteric now and then, but I like what he does with the 911's and I feel anyone who makes their own money can do whatever they please with it.

He has just become the face of the new generation of car enthusiasts that have finally recognized Porsche and lead to the upswing. Even though he has been collecting for years, no one would have guessed it 5 to 10 years ago. He is the complete opposite of probably 80% of the typical Porsche owner in the past (demographic wise) and likely 80% of the people on this forum.

Posted by: Coondog Dec 9 2015, 12:15 PM

I just wish I was smart enough like Magnus to buy property in Venice Calif. While our real estate is crazy expensive, Venice is the new in place for smaller tech company's. It's called Silicon Valley West. I am sure his savvy knowledge or good luck to buy in Venice when no one else would touch commerical property there helped his Porsche hobby grow. Then again it takes money to make money so good for him.

Agree wholeheartedly. More than a few commenters on this thread seem to enjoy the "holier than thou" attitude they decry in others who don't appreciate 914s as much as we do.
More power to Walker...he's expanded the vision of what modified Porsches can become and added much to the car culture in general. I see a lot of cars on this forum that could easily elicit a WTF comment, but also embrace "to each his own" and usually am impressed by the effort and passion, if not the result.
The -6 we bought new, absent some easily reversed suspension mods done back in our PCA DE days, will retain its 99% original form. It shares garage space with a restomod FJ55 Land Cruiser with an SBC conversion. Soon I'll start on a Model A 60s-style retro rod.
Enthusiasm comes in all shapes and colors. We should embrace that, not try to put fences around it or bend and shape it into our own narrow view.

That's the problem. It's not one lapse in judgment. There are several videos surfacing of him racing with other cars well over 100 mph on public roads. He is also a PCA Driving Instructor and should know better. This is simply the first time it ended in an accident, and one that ALMOST killed his passenger.

Aside from that, yes, he's a good businessman. But just because one is talented at marketing or promoting oneself does not make a skilled car designer, fabricator or all-around wrench. This is a public forum and we're allowed to critique anyone we like, within the bounds of tastefulness. That's also why I enjoy this place. You may like Magnus and think he's god's gift to cars. I personally think a lot of people are jumping on his bandwagon because you perceive it to make your car more valuable, and to be brutally honest, there are guys here like Chris F., Scotty B, Eric Shea, etc that have already displayed more skill and imagination and have been doing it a lot longer. I'd prefer to support them than Porsche's marketing go-to.

I would cut the guy a little slack.

This conversation sounds a lot like the conversations you read over on the woodworking forums and people blasting Norm Abrams from New Yankee Workshop/This Old House about being a quality woodworker/carpenter because he sometimes use drywall screws in his projects....Everyone is allowed a minor lapse in judgment. Good for Magnus in making something of his life and hopefully adding a little joy to someone's day when they see him on You Tube, etc.

The world is a crappy place right now especially if you are raising kids and are concerned about their wellbeing.

Thanks for guys like Magnus, Norm Abrams, and the 914World for giving us regular folk a place to go and step away from daily life for a while.

I got in an accident once, driving too fast on a road after a rain, rear-ended the car in front of me. Bloodied my nose on the steering wheel. I was wrong, and I should have known better...

guess I don't deserve my 914 either...

It's like complaining there are too many 914 restoration threads in the garage forum...that would never happen on 914World... right?? WTF.gif

At least he realized to buy two. Always good to have a back up while the other is up in the air on jack stands.

My wife wonders if both of mine will ever have the wheels on at the same time !

I'm guessing you didn't see the video of him racing a Honda on the freeway weaving in and out of traffic? Who knows how many other times he's done that yet it wasn't recorded or there wasn't an incident?

Is there a pattern here or just bad luck having these 2 things brought out in the open?

And what, you've never done anything stupid in your 914?

I'd say a rather large percentage of us with fun cars have done stupid shit with them. That's nothing new. The ONLY reason these are issues is because he is a high profile and very polarizing person.

As if Jay Leno has never received speeding/reckless driving ticket before for hauling ass on the freeway, or for dicking around up in the Malibu Canyons, yet he is always viewed as an ambassador for the hobby.

Definitely a double standard within the community.

I think it is frustrating to people to see someone getting credit for ideas that are not their own or even that original because they are better at self-promotion. Despite his "demeanor" or how he interviews, we all see how hard he works at self-promotion and some of us were raised to think that modesty is preferable. Not that self-promotion is wrong, this is just my theory of why some may have such a negative response to this guy.

Some of this could be the fault of the writers that just don't know or care that many of the small mods/features have been done before yet they wax poetic for their story that makes it sound like he is the 1st to do something like that.

90 posts since the OP posted the heads up about MW obtaining 2 914s. About 30% of the posts is about the person MW, his driving - and what's not to like about him. It's like reading schoolkids' WhatsApp messages about classmates.

Back to cars perhaps?

For me the 914 fraternity stands for the open minded attitude towards people who've modded their cars. Over on the British TR Register, you're slaughtered, hanged and fed to the crows when you consider an engine swap/upgrade. I like the fact that most follow Porsche's motto that you can improve your Porsche. MW follows that tradition. And you can like the outcome of his plans - or not.

And it's not important to know wether he did the modding himself of let a company do it for him! A fair share of people here have hired a company to do work for them on their Teener! I am fully aware of the fact that I'm in a luxurious position by owning a classic car workshop with very skilled ex Porsche mechanics.

MW will add new flavors to the dish: like their taste or not. At least it will spice up the Teener community!

I guess I probably helped push a 914 at Okteenerfest. And I know I have used a flatbed to bring a couple home. So, maybe I'm in too.

If you love the 914, I count you as my friend. Push, pull, drive, stock, outlaw, no windshield, no targa bar (yes, I cut the targa bar off of one in the 80s, I am sad to admit), whatever. We need all the friends we can get.

Now let's look at the bigger Magnus

I met him at Amelia a couple years ago. Yep, He's a really down to earth, genuine fan.

BUT look at his posts on Early S, Pelican, Rennlist etc. It is ALL about Magnus. He NEVER posts anything on anyone else's threads. He rarely answers questions in his own build threads other post to him. He is not a member of the " community " A LOT of people take offense to that

Yes I understand being inundated with PM's, emails etc, but the fact remains he is a PORSCHE guy, and he is a PORSCHE guy for himself. He does NOTHING as far as participating in the community as whole. He participates in the MW threads and that is it. He was essentially run off the Early S registry when one guy finally opened his mouth stating just that ,and then the flood gates opened. AFAIK MW never posted on that forum again. The same backlash has happened on Pelican, but I'm sure you know all of this. rolleyes.gif

Like I said, I met and talked to him for a bit, I have NO doubt his is has the real passion for the marque, but his public persona is nothing but self promotion. I'm not even going to get into his driving style/skills. I can't cast that stone, as I'll openly admit to driving like a hoon at times. The difference is I, ( and I have no doubt he ) actually know how to handle a car. We all make mistakes and do stupid shit, you play with fire you're going to get burned at some point

It would be interesting to see what he has in mind for his 914s too ...

As for driving skills ... I've pulled some hair-brained stunts over the years too, just like a lot of us out here have. Who am I to hold it against him? - I'm sure he knows he had a close call and hopefully learned a valuable lesson.

Very well said. It seems there have been very loose judgements made about him in the Porsche world and I really have never understood why.
He has created a business out of his passion which I think is the ultimate. His story is way cool and has done this by persistence and creativity. Some people can't handle that, I have met him several times and always a cool guy.

Well, I dunno about Seinfeld.... wink.gif

Seriously, the level of antipathy here is pretty shocking! Magnus wouldn't be the first person in the P-car hobby to be a shameless self-promoter. For this of you with gray hair or with a bathtub fixation, try to remember Harry Pellow, "The Maestro". From what I can tell, he was an ass, but nobody denies his contributions to the hobby.

We've had more than one or two people on this BBS who seem more interested in self-promotion than anything else, as well. Some have been run off (*cough*George*cough*) but some are still around. Some might even be surprised to hear that other people think they are on that list, and I'm sure that everyone has different opinions about that anyway.

Magnus seems like someone who really does "get it". He may not be a super DIY type of guy, but there's room in the hobby for that as well. He has a passion for the cars, and that comes through.

I'm interested to see what he does with the 914s. I'm hoping it is something I never thought of, or is done in a way I hadn't thought of, but even if I hate the result I'm glad to see new people enjoying our cars.

If he does show up here, I will welcome him.

....Oh, and as for his "horrible irresponsible driving", please raise your hand if you've never done something stupid in a car... For most of us, the difference is that there weren't cameras on hand to record it, nor a whole bunch of people who could watch that recording and comment on it.

my 83 year old neighbor came over this summer when I had my garage clothes on...
he looked me over and said; "maybe you need to buy some new clothes"

not a question, more of a statement in the way an 83 year old, tells a younger person what to do

of course my full beard, holey clothes with lots of grease stains, and mickey's big mouth skull cap don't make me look too presentable.

Porsche is about the people. MW is welcome here in any form, as is Jerry Seinfeld, and Jay Leno. Just car guys. P-car guys.

For most of us, the difference is that there weren't cameras on hand to record it, nor a whole bunch of people who could watch that recording and comment on it.

he's a clothing designer, primarily geared towards musicians. Watch this iconic video for the whole backstory. I do have a LOT of respect for the guy, where he came from, what he has become, all on his own.

So he drives like a typical DC area driver when the beltway isn't at gridlock, which isn't all that often... Agree his driving style is not ideal, but I'm sure we have our members who are guilty also...

But it does amaze me - thread after thread on this forum discussing how our teeners get little respect and hopeful threads that some day our cars will command the prices of 356's and long hood 911's.

Here comes a guy who will bring attention, and deserved or not or tasteful or not (all subject to personal opinion), good attention to our cars, and most seem upset by it.

It's a fickle World...

Just wait for Jalopnik to get wind of his 914's, I'm sure they'll send a 20 year old Subaru driving hipster to wax poetically about how has re-invented the 914.

Not MW's fault, just those that are not in the know.

It's just that I don't see anything revolutionary in what he's done (drilling holes in shit - Colin Chapman was way ahead of him), and I don't typically associate myself with self-promoters. If I saw him at a car show, as with the Gas Monkey weirdos, I'd say my "'Sup", check out his car, then move on. No worshipping here.

Can't believe I made missed this thread, I'm behind on buying 914's, I'll add 2 more by summer bringing the total to around 5. Was priced out of 911's in the last 2 years, NOT going to let that happen again. I like Magnus, love his cars. What he has done is add tons of wealth to a lot of folk, not his fault if you didn't see that coming. I think his 914 stuff is not cool yet, looking forward to seeing if anything 914 wise further evolves. Yawn. I'm hoping he discovers 912's next, then 924's...

I am sort of new on the 914world and looking to buy my first 914. I have seen some cars of MW, and I do like them. I do not know anything about the guy himself so I will not say anything about him.
I am looking into 914 for like 6 months now, and when I saw posts he was going to add 914's to his portfolio, I thought two things.
1) More people will like the 914's better from this point on, since there wil be positive attention and marketing involved here
2) oh oh...I better hurry to get my first 914 before the prices go up after this.

I have to say (just like ssuperflyoldguy) that I am not impressed what is shown at this time. I have seen better and cooler 914's. He did not deliver something special yet, so I hope to see a better thought-out idea from him.

PS Like more wifes also mine does not get the bum-look. She Always asks why guys like Aaron (gasmonkey) tries to be more ugly on purpose with that weird beard so I guess she won't get that MW look either....

Way too much chamber in the rear...someone didn't know or bother to check the offset needed for proper clearance...adding chamber for tire clearance is something those "stance" guys do...sad sad.gif

I've been avoiding this thread knowing it would be filled with more negative than positive comments as most Magnus threads on any forum are. But curiosity finally got the better of me...

I believe if an active World member built this car and posted it, the responses would be more positive and fewer. Personally I like it, would I build one like this, probably not, but I like what I see.

Disclaimer - I'm not a fan of Magnus, never met him, don't care if I do, and won't get a picture with him and post it if I do, but I have no reason to dislike him either, nor do I understand all the hype.

Gents: First, there is a big difference between "us" and MW...we are posting here and he is not. Secondly, somehow, people (some) have held him up on a pedestal - for which I cannot fathom. The thoughts were (again, some) "I can't wait to see what he does with a 914!". He did nothing.

My biggest issue with MW is his antics placing all of us (and our children, wives, friend and family) in jeopardy! BTW, if MW does post himself, I'd tell him to grow up, act like an adult, stop dragging 914's into bad form with his poor judgement (stick with 911's), get a F****** haircut and then - goodbye.

Phase #)(*)(& doesn't mean crap to me - he played his cards and I guarantee you he is more interested in selling wheels to teeners than building them. You are being played for a fool - whoever posted the picture of his car is playing his game. Promotion of his business.

I said it before and this is the last time I'm posting on this and perpetuating this dumbass (when you document via video putting innocent lives at risk...I'm being KIND to only call him this!) - move on, nothing to see here except a commercial.

MW is a very nice guy that happens to be rich and into Porsche's. He remembered me 1 year after I met him before he saw my car again. Very down to earth guy. I think there are a lot of haters here. If anyone else had modified a red 914 with a black hood, they would have received mostly compliments and the haters would have been quiet. Since MW is a public figure, the haters feel compelled to critique everything he does.

I hope he doesn't join this site because all he will see is people blasting him. Enough already.

I think his rims look good in some colors but are too expensive for me and most CSOB 914 owners to buy...

I said I wouldn't post anymore on this but since there apparently are some very daft people posting on this topic - they leave me no choice.

GEEZ! WHEN SOMEONE PUTS, REPEATEDLY, OTHERS LIVES AT RISK AND IS NOT THE LEAST BIT APOLOGETIC - THEY ARE A THREAT! EVEN WORSE, AS MENTIONED BY OTHERS HERE (IN HIS DEFENSE AND THEIR POTENTIAL GAIN) HE HAS A LARGE FOLLOWING. THIS ONLY MAKES IT WORSE BECAUSE OTHER IMPRESSIONABLE YOUNG ASSHOLES COULD THINK THIS HORRID BEHAVIOR IS OK OR COOL. IT IS NOT.

IF MW IS SO RICH - KEEP THE DRIVING ANTICS AT THE PROPER VENUE. I DON'T QUITE KNOW HOW HARD THIS IS FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND - THOSE WHO DEFEND HIM. IT IS NOT HIP TO KILL PEOPLE JUST MOVING ABOUT THEIR LIVES.

I WAS 22 YEARS OLD WHEN SOME IDIOT TOOK MY DAD FROM OUR FAMILY - 2/93. HE IS JUST ANOTHER ONE WHO HAPPENS TO LOOK HOMELESS. MY WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN NEVER KNEW MY FATHER AND VICE VERSA. THIS WAS TWO NIGHTS AGO...MY DAUGHTERS DANCE RECITAL. TWO-MONTHS AGO I SURPASSED MY FATHER'S AGE AT TIME OF HIS DEATH - I AM 45.

AND YOU THINK BECAUSE HE REMEMBERS NAMES OR INCREASES YOUR 914 VALUE HE'S A GOOD DUDE. WHO ARE YOU FOOLING? YOURSELVES. SOME SAY THEY HAVEN'T MET HIM - I DON'T HAVE TO IF YOU'RE SAVVY ENOUGH TO WATCH HIS YOUTUBE POSTS. HE'S A F**** IDIOT - I HOPE HE COMES HERE AND SEE'S THIS TOO BUT HE APPEARS SELFISH ENOUGH TO MAKE NO DIFFERENCE.

I'm sad to see so many comments that feel like they are from another forum. The negative BS here is getting less and less like what our 914world has been about, and more like the pinky lifter or ricer forums.

Why would anyone feel the need to rag on Magnus during his phase 1? Why not be supportive, as we all enjoy doing our own things to these cars. Why not withhold judgement and ragging until you see what phase 2 will be? Or 3, or 4? There are 1000 other projects on here that deserve ragging on more than what he has done to his car.

If a Joe Blow member of this forum shared his progress thread and it looked exactly like this, we would be supportive and encouraging and excited to see what's next. So is Magnus a less valuable human than Joe Blow? Just because he is high profile, is it right for us to target him with all the BS that looks like what ignoramus idiots post on Youtube comments?

Whatever. I DON'T like everything he does, and I'm guilty of making fun of his stupid crash into the back of a parked semi trailer in front of the media. But let's dial back the seemingly irresistible need to bash him and be interested in seeing what he does next?

I don't give a shit about anyone's need to feel superior about their opinion of how awesome they are and how lame everyone else is. I do care about anything anyone is doing to make a 914 into something THEY feel is awesome. (And yes, that includes you, Cracker Tony - I love your work even though I flicked you some shit about your attitude - which I hope you took in stride as one guy to another in the garage. I'm over that BTW and love your beast in progress!!)

There's a big difference between poking fun in the garage with friends than saying derogative shit about others outside "our own" garage. Let's not get cliquey.

So we've gone from a car community to a tabloid...

Sure, we are passionate crowd, sure sometimes we have our "explosions" on other members (myself included on a few occasions unfortunately), but I agree, let's not degenerate to the likes of others forums I've seen where disrespect is the norm.

And does it matter that Magnus doesn't play on the World as some have mentioned? We are not the only community involved with 914s, social media in general is vast, let him play where he wants to play. And by reading many of the posts, he isn't welcome here if wanted to join.

As for driving over the speed limit, if I could get the car off the lift, I'd try to get to the speed limit...

Back on topic. MW's car is all Porsche from the engine to the vintage styling front air dam. So far nothing that hasn't been done or seen around here before. The wheels are spendy but tastefully within the spirit of the original design. There have been many cars here with blacked out trim and bumpers. Again within the spirit of what others have done. Dude,
You are out of line, or maybe you are looking for a fight.
Look somewhere else to blow off steam.

Rick is one of the most generous and helpful assholes on the board....
We all love ricks long ass project threads, his willingness to share his knowledge, and his overall fun loving sense of duty to this board.

Please leave the personal attacks at the front door before others turn against you.

If you have issues with Magnus, then do what others with free will have chosen to do and do not read threads about him, and don't make nasty comments. Just skip the thread...you may sleep better (and live longer) and that comes from someone who knows what stress can do to a body....

I like what he's doing for Porsche cars and I believe Porsche likes it too. Magnus is as serious an enthusiast as anyone else on this site. You may not like his personal style or what he does with his cars but his style is his own and he builds his cars the way he envisions them. That's no different than the rest of us. I've never met him but it seems everyone on here that has met him likes him and always say what a nice and down to earth person he is. That speaks volumes to me. I wish I could have people say the same about me. Not a bad thing at all. Please cut this guy some slack! I've never read anything negative he's said about anyone else! I think he's a good guy!

You are correct in that MW brings out some illogical post from some members. My only concern is that he posts those dangerous driving runs on YouTube. Just think if he caused an accident where one of your family members died.
He runs POC, thus he can save it for the track where the only thing that will slow you down is your head and the items between your legs.

Yeah, I certainly do understand your point about racing around on public roads. It's not something that should be promoted. Other than that though, I have no issues with the guy. Unfortunately racing around on public roads is pretty common place with cars and motor cycles. Most of us have pushed the limit in this way upon occasion. Ever seen any of Jake Raby's video's doing the same thing? I have and don't recall any backlash about it from anyone on 914world.com. I guess having a professionally produced and heavily stylized video made raises the hair on some people's neck. I think for some reason, there's something about MW that a lot of people don't like. Kind of like Kieffer Sutherland. I don't know what it is about that guy but I just want to punch him in the face.

I'd buy any 914 guy a beer and sit there for awhile.

For guys like Rick, I'd give him the shirt off my back if he needed it.

Closed and deleted thread will be good for all of us. Let's get back to cars. Crazy driving rants do not belong here. barf.gif

I sorta kinda like the way he's keeping it 4lug no flairs and still an aggressive look to the car
