914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Dallas/ Austin machine shops

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 12 2003, 06:12 PM

does anyone know of a place in Dallas or Austin that works on type 4 heads and doesn't charge an arm and a leg... the only place I've found wants 500 to do both! or is this just the standard charge when you say "hi, I have a 914 and I need the valves grinded..." I have a burnt valve(I think) and I want to go ahead and replace the valve seats if they aren't too back breaking

I used to use a machine shop in Ft.Worth for all of my work.

Call Zims.. ask for Kirk.. tell him Brad Roberts sent you... and ASK him where they send all of their stuff.

I dont recall the name of the Ft.Worth machine shop.. but they do a lot of VW/Audi/BMW stuff. The guy that ran the place was named "Steve".

Get a hold of Rich Johnson in Plano and ask him who Wes Hildreth uses for all of his machine work.

actually Zim's is the place wanting ~500... Rich sent me to them after I found out the place Wes uses(knights in Garland) is going out of business sad.gif knight's recommended another place but it's one guy with a cell phone for a business and I can never get him... mad.gif

Zim's said they do their stuff in-house, I'll call them again and drop your name though and see what they say...

rich also mentioned the place in Ft. worth... (automotive machine? I think that was the name) I need to track them down next, I guess... my thing is this... MOFOCO will rebuild the heads for 175 ea. so I don't want to spend more than that b/c I can always ship it to them... I just prefer to get things locally if I can...

Posted by: Brad Roberts Jun 12 2003, 06:55 PM

Automotive machine is who I used... I also used Knights when I was there.

Who is MOFOCO ?

I know Al had some equipment at Zims.. but I doubt they are doing them there. Most people can do the guides.. but the seat cutting and valve grinding gets sent out.

DONT send them to RIMCO.

MOFOCO is a mainly VW place... but they do a lot of type 4 stuff...

http://www.mofoco.com

I'll find the number for Automotive machine tommorrow then...

I am gonna miss Knights...

thanks for the advice! I was beginning to wonder how I was going to get this done... thanks for the warning about RIMCO... their image precedes them on all of these sites...

Correct me if I am wrong, but $500 seems to be the average price for two T4 heads to be rebuilt....?? Get it done on the cheap, and you will know why they were so cheap, as your seats fall out. headbang.gif

Posted by: Brad Roberts Jun 12 2003, 07:21 PM

500$ is not bad. I had a set done locally for 300$. They didnt have to replace the exhaust valves.

Having someone "guess" how much your heads will cost is very difficult until they pull them apart and see exactly what you need.

maybe I'm just unreasonable... I have gotten a set of chevy heads done for 200 and they were pretty rough... maybe I just haven't factored in how much more the type 4 heads will cost... 300 to me is reasonable... but maybe I'm over-optimistic
confused24.gif

I see what you mean though... maybe I should be willing to pay Zim's but I want to check with automotive machine first...

Posted by: Brad Roberts Jun 12 2003, 07:56 PM

Chevy iron heads dont have "seats" that get replaced. They just grind the head. The Chevy heads also dont typically have bronze guides in them that you can replace... they also dont have sodium filled exhaust valves that are expensive..

You live in Small Block heaven.. everything is cheap there for the Chevy engines..

As a matter of fact, I was in there today to get a set of bearings for my align-bored block.

don't want to bring bad news but Automotive Machine doesn't do type iv heads anymore, couldn't keep the valve seats in them they said. They will sell you new ones.

My next set of heads will probably go to RIMCO

I'll let some of the other club members tell you about their dealings with RIMCO.

I send mine to one of two places:

Same place Jerry Woods uses... or the old TechCraft (cant recall the new name) and dont really want to give out the "Woods" guy.

I guess I got spoiled...

I'll ask Automotive Machine how much new heads cost... if it's only a little bit more it may be worth it...

I'm also trying to do this at a bad time... I don't have the money really since I am getting married in 3 months... that's making me more of a tight wad than normal headbang.gif

oh well... if it has to wait... so be it I would rather it be right...

Posted by: seanery Jun 12 2003, 09:41 PM

You'll make the wedding wait for your teener to get new heads!

You are a PHREAK!! and in the right place. WOOHOO Dude!

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 12 2003, 10:07 PM

yes, I am... but the wedding won't wait... and believe it or not... I'm looking forward to it... but that doesn't make me any less broke because of it...

I think I'm just p-o'd because I haven't been able to drive it hardly at all this year...

Posted by: Brad Roberts Jun 12 2003, 10:21 PM

Wait a second.. I listed a set of heads rebuilt in the classifieds for 300$ less than 6 weeks ago.. you could have just bought those...

headbang.gif I hadn't found this site yet... I'm slow. someone on Pelican metioned this site and I finally decided to look over here about a week ago

that's just my luck on timing! I don't suppose you still have a set to sell? biggrin.gif

It only took me a few hours to figure out your "screen name" do you have any pics of your "ink"

I dont need scrotum shots or ass shots...LOL

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 13 2003, 07:52 AM

yeah, I'll post them tonight... I don't keep them at work... don't worry, no nuts or ass... just back and leg for now

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 13 2003, 10:04 AM

ok, now I'm thouroghly confused...

this thread was posted today on Pelican's BBS:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=841951#post841951

before this, I had heard only a little stuff about RIMCO and most was bad... now there are several people standing by them... what's everyone's experience with RIMCO on here?

Posted by: Bleyseng Jun 13 2003, 10:46 AM

Oh yeah, you are the guy with the 1.7 and 1.8 bus engine, right? I can only say that Jake Raby sends all his heads to Headflowmasters so they receive high marks form everyone I have seen.
Locally in Seattle we have Jerry who does VW/type4 work.
MOFOCO is one of those mass production engine places from what I have heard so very scary! Most of us remember Mark Stephens!

To do them right cost money otherwise the seats fall out!

Geoff

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 13 2003, 11:41 AM

yea, that's me... headflowmasters I'm sure are great... and I will probably use them when I'm not doing something basic... like porting/polish and opening up valves and cylinders... but that is much later... I'm not planning on racing... ever, I just like a car that goes! now I am considering RIMCO since several people who have had BASIC stuff done has had good things to say... the people who diss'd I think had more complicated work... which should have gone to headflowmasters...

*sigh* what to do? the thing is this: 105 ea. is a decent(normal) price for heads to me

so is rimco safe?

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 13 2003, 10:08 PM

the ink, by Brad's request!

you can't tell by this pic, but the snakes go around the leg...

the interior part of the leg...

the thing people don't notice until I point out to them is the hidden symbols in the tribal black snake...

there are at least 6 in this pic... can you find them? tongue.gif
