914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914 Featured Model at PCA OCR Feb 6 Breakfast
Posted by: Tom_T Jan 7 2016, 01:40 PM
UPDATE: It's this Saturday!
If you're not a PCA member yet, the Membership Chair or someone should have some info & complimentary issue of Pando (OCR) &/or Panorama (PCA) magazines there to coax you to join!
AFAIK, members of other Regions of PCA (hte local chapters, if you will) are welcome too. Breakfast is something reasonable like $12 per person IIRC for a great buffet breakfast, & spouses/S.O.s/kids/or?? are welcome too - $24 per couple IIRC.

Our 914s will be among the featured Porsche models in the 2/6/16 "Porsche Alley" display at this next month's PCA OC Region Breakfast Meeting = along with fellow NARPies 924/944/968 & 928 front engine water-cooled orphans (to the tail-dragger crowd at least ;-).
It's 8-10-ish am on the first Saturday every month, at Original Mike's (100 S. Main @ 1st St. in Santa Ana) - IIRC it's $12 per person for a buffet Breakfast with loads of great food & some selected Porsche speaker prez. (I think Zwart was featured recently, but I don't know who for Feb).
Open to members & anyone who wants to check out becoming a member by meeting folks there. So lets have a good 914er showing!
Feel free to post your pix of the events above & below on here if you want.
Also, the monthly Porsches & Doughnutz will be on 1/16/16 8-10-ish am at the Krispy Kreme in Orange at The Outlets/The Block off the GG Fwy 22 at State College/The City Drive exit by the TGIFs there.
This is a FREE & open event to any & all comers, with or without a P-car (they park away from the P-cars in next row[s]). Come out & & & meet some folks. .... you buy the coffee & gut bombs if wanted!
Maybe a breakfast kick-off before you head on up to the Zone 8 Concours & Annual Awards Banquet up in Warner Center?
And guess what, they actually like our 914s now! .... with many having owned one or more back in the day, so nore more outcast vibes!
There are CWs, AXers, DEers, TTers, Ralliers, Racers, & informal types in the club, so no matter what your "Thang" is - you'll find someone with like interests in PCA. Come on out!
BTW - PCA membership is only $46/yr for 2 memberships (member + associate: wife, SO, GF, kid, buddy, dog, whatever!) - & that includes 12 months of Panorama ~ which is no equal or better than Excellence for the same price (esp. now with Pete Stout onboard & over from Excellence) - plus 12 months of Pandomoneum "Pando" the OCR magazine (or your local region's magazine), & many free & modest cost events, plus the pay as you go AX, Track, Rally & Concours etc. events.
Cheers!

I'll make the 2/6/16 date....
Posted by: PlantMan Jan 14 2016, 07:22 PM
I may drop by without my car....if you saw my car you would know why!
I hope this does not interfere with my fishing that weekend.......
Thanks Tom for the 411 on the PCA membership.

I used to take the 914 to this event many times. I just got tired of the PCA folks with their noses in the air. If I was really lucky, maybe one of them would even talk to me about my car. The dough nuts were great however.

Elliot - the taildragger crowd is much better nowadays, & many had 914s back in the day. We're finally getting respect.
This one with the "Porsche Alley" 914 etc. display is at the Original Mike's in Santa Ana & is a full buffet breakfast of some pretty good food, plus usually an interesting speaker/prez, plus some general meeting BS which I usually ignore mostly.
I agree about the doughnuts though, as I'm not a Krispy Kreme "industrial doughnut factory" fan - so I usually pick up either Winchells or the local independent shops' "hand-made" gut bombs & take them over!
The 3rd Sat Doughnuts event tomorrow is different than the full buffet breakfast on 1st Sat mornings.
There also was a PCA informal dinner at Woody's burger Barn in HB last nite (Thurs) - which is also on the OCR Calendar online every month on 2nd Thursday evenings at 6 pm (hard for many to make).
OCR & most of the Regions (think of them as the local chapters) have several low/no cost gatherings each month.
Elliot - I think your local Central Coast Region has some breakfast & other informal gatherings too, but they stopped the Concours a while back & don't seem to have their act together for 2016 yet either.
Cheers!

I'm trying to get over there, but it will depend upon how early I have to get out to drive the 2-3 hrs. up to Warner Center to help judge at that Zone 8 Concours, & how early I need to be there.
If I make it, I'll be in the blue 88 VW Westy van, since they've requested it's presence - or at least that of the awning attached to it!
Go anyway & meet some nice folks & talk Porsches! They always like the 914s whenever one shows up when I've been there. It's now a classic to most P-folks.

Might I suggest that you do a new topic with the link to that article, whenever GPX gets it on their website?
Think of it as sharing - if bragging bothers you!
I suggest that for everyone who is getting some notice of our 914s out there too!

Sad really as it would be nice to meet up with like minded car guys how like the brand..what ever model.

Dean - imagine their surprise to find out that Porsche actually produced 17+/- "Porsche B32 Carrera" Vanagons!
... oh, & then there's the modern VW-Porsche in the Cayenne/Tauoreg, not to mention that ALL 356's are mostly VW parts bin cars!
I think it's more education needed - or else, as they say here about some of the Corvette guys - a "small parts" compensation problem!

Just ask them if the 914 is not a real Porsche, then the Porcupine joke refers only to 911 owners, right?

Tom who do I talk to about my membership...I never got my pando? I emailed with no luck...
Glad to see you're back with us!
I'll PM you some emails for OCR folks in a sec.!
Update - took a few mins to dig out my latest Pando for the folks to contact, but you have that PM now!
PS - if you're actually in either the San Gabriel Valley or Riverside Regions, then you'd get their Region Newsletter, & would need to contact them.
Panorama "Pano" is by national PCA, so PM or email me if you actually need them &/or SGVR or RR locally - or use the link below to get to either/both.
For others - there is a Region look-up page on the PCA National website, which will get you directly to the local Region (think of it as a local chapter) in your area, at this link....
https://www.pca.org/region-directory .... & click on the map!

Hank - that 'Vette joke was popular with some gals I knew back in the day!
I think the 911-NARP thing is likewise an inadequacy issue with
some 911 owners as well, but am not familiar with the "Porcupine joke" per se!

Cheers Tom thanks for your comments enjoyed them,I still have a Porsche club NZ sticker on my car from the PO,emailed him after I bought it and asked if it was worth joining up,he said he joined for one year only, when asked what he had he mentioned one 914 and a 911 longhood they ignored the existence of the 914.
He thought his membership would be less appreciated if he didn't lug the signs and banners around for the club meetings in his VW transporter, sure enough he sold the van and was less popular
.
Something I do notice is the amount of people that get into Porsches after teenage days of owning VW beetles and Kombi's......end of the day one wouldn't be around without the other.

Dean -
I did it the other way around - 914 (VW) when I was just out of college & 20's-30's, then the Camper Van later when we had kids!
The several Kiwi's that I used to play Rugby with over here all loved my 914, & our captain (Yank) had a beautiful `72 911S but still appreciated my 914 for it's better/more balanced handling. Unfortunately he met his end in the 911 head-on by a drunk who crossed the median.
None of us were PCA members back then - as we were all too busy with matches, tournaments & practice/training.
Later on, my Old Boyz Rugby buddies loved the 88 Westy too (it came in handy on road trips to matches for old crusty guys), as do many of the current PCA members, several had them back in the day.
Cheers!

Sounds good Jim! ..... & all!
Hopefully you'll drag your Sunset/Seaside/HB 914ers along too!
We may have at least a half dozen or so 914s there, & maybe more.
I just PMed Socalandy to see if he will bring his -6, or if he has to work.
I'll be picking up our Westy from Hans Imports in HB tomorrow - with its fresh fuel lines engine to tank/fuel pump/etc. & a few other coolant/PS/brake/etc. rubber lines changed out too - for our use on Sat. am, since I'm sans 914 still.
Cheers!

A few of us were talking about the Krispy Kreme informal gathering earlier in this thread. Sorry for the confusion.
PCA - OCR's monthly casual gatherings are free - you buy food/drink -
Original Mike's is always 1st Saturday morning 8-10-ish am.
Auto Kennel is 2nd Sat. 9-11 am.
Burger Bahn is at Woody's Diner on Euclid in HB on 2nd Thurs. 6-8-ish pm.
Krispy Kreme in Orange is 3rd Sat. 8:30-10-ish am.
Pancakes & Porsches at Woody's Newport Peninsula is 4th Sat. 8-10-ish am.
Cheers!

Nice turnout!! I think there was ten 914's there. I didn't take any pictures.
Posted by: Tom_T Feb 6 2016, 02:23 PM
Dang, I didn't get any pix either, except the rear end of Marv's -6 driving off!
If anyone else did get pix, post them here please.
914 NARPs outnumbered he 928 & 924/944/951/968 water-cooled-NARPs by a long way, & they did tuck a 918 in with the 914s - quite fitting IMHO.
It was quite the talk of the folks attending that some many 914s showed up!
It was nice met or reconnect with all y'all there. Hope y'all had a good visit with other folks - even the tail-draggers, & a good feed, even if Mike's seemed a bit overwhelmed by the big turnout overall!
Correction - I guess this shot of Marv's silver -6 leaving catches the line-up of 914s, 918, etc., but I meant do a better run down of pix of each car, but then got talking .... folks started leaving .... well you know!
Any other pix from you guys that were there?
Cheers!

What a turnout, about 12 914s and a ton of other P-cars. I have pics of all the 914s on my iPhone; right now I<m try to resize them so they can be uploaded.
Next time they have an event at Original Mikes, I'll be in; it's a classic place plus I know where it is now.

Sure thing Jim, & I'll bet you had no NARPy comments from others there either!
I think the featured models next month are the Cayenne & Macan.
Not sure if we'll have our Cayenne S by then though, but we've been actively looking for a low mile 2008-12 CayS to tow our vintage 1960 Avion T20 trailer - sim. to Airstream ... but better than ;-).
... Why so many have to be BLACK is beyond me!?
This is a rotating featured models plan, so the 914s will come around again soon, & they just may want to give us 914ers a day on our own, since we had so many show up to show off their "babies"!
