The P-38 Lightning had "turbo-superchargers" on its twin Allison engines.

Yeah, turbos existed back in 1971.

For what it is worth..

First production turbo engine in a car was Oldsmobile
An aluminum block 215 that made 215 HP in 1962..

Corvair Spyder Turbo's were a few months later...
145 ci that made 150hp..

1+ HP per cubic inch, not bad for the day..
