The 12th edition of the famous Route 66 Classis promises to be 4 days of fun and adventure.
The dates are Thursday April 28 to Sunday May 1, 2016.
We will explore The Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona, Jerome and Prescott.

BOOK YOUR ROOMS NOW!!! Tell them you are with The Porsche Club.

Our Host Hotel in Flagstaff will be the Econo Lodge University. 914 S Milton Rd, Flagstaff, AZ, 86001. (928) 774-7326
We will stay there 2 nights, Thursday & Friday. 4/28-29. $55-60 per night.

On Saturday 4/30 we will be at the Comfort Inn at Ponderosa Pines. 1290 White Spar Rd., Prescott, AZ, 86303. (928) 778-5770
The rate is $89. Both hotels are Pet Friendly and have FREE Breakfast.


Itinerary:
Thursday April 28 - Arrive in Flagstaff. Dinner at Brewery of choice: Beaver Street, Flagstaff, Lumberyard.
Friday April 29 - Grand Canyon Adventure Tour. Lunch TBD. Parking Lot Pizza Party.
Saturday April 30 - Sedona -> Cottonwood -> Jerome Driving Tour. Lunch TBD. Arrive in Prescott. Awards Banquet.
Sunday May 1 - Party over. Back to reality.

The Saturday night Awards Banquet will be at the http://gurleystgrill.com/, right in the middle of Historic Downtown Prescott.

7:00 pm - Downtown Walking Tour.
Cocktails at 8. Dinner at 9.

Our party will be in a private banquet room on the second floor.

We can order from the full menu and get separate checks.

As usual, you are responsible for your own entertainment.

Please make your room reservations quickly. Both hotels expect to be Sold Out.

MapQuest says the Grand Canyon drive is 3 1/2 hours. I expect it to take longer.
It is 100 miles up and 80 miles back on the planned loop.
There are 8 restaurants in the Village area to pick from for lunch.

The Saturday drive is much shorter. A little over 2 hours of seat time. Only 100 miles or so.
Sedona will be our first pit stop / photo opp.
There is also the art studio in Cottonwood.
The road in and out of Jerome is fantastic.
There are numerous lunch options in Cornville, Cottonwood and Jerome.


As is the custom starting time both days is 9:14 am.

If I'm in AZ that week I'd try and make at least one day.
From experience, the drive from Flagstaff to Prescott is priceless, especially 89A in Oak Creek Canyon. You won't be disappointed!!
Roads around Jerome also amazing... good choices!!

I had a nice conversation with a WORLD member who is also a long time Sedona resident.
He gave me some local insider information to help make our Saturday jaunt even better.

Our tour will now also include a scenic drive on Beaver Head road and a visit to Cornville.
Come on. With names like that, you know it has to be good.

Hook up with Worn and meet us south on I35. If the stars align I want to leave like Tuesday after work and get at least to southern MN. We usually get a room the first night and leave at the crack of 8 ish... Then drive as far as we can til around 8-9 pm. Grab a room where we can and we will be in Flag Staff for Thursday with no effort. If I am by myself I usually put on over 1k miles a day. I'm not sure how I will do this year.. It sitting in the car that's the worse.

Woo Hoo! I hope to be in the middle of a Southwest Exploration Tour in my Syncro Westy during this time, so as long as a Vanagon camper with a Subie EG33 isn't too much of a drag.....I'm in. Rooms booked.

Maybe it is just me but... some of the best times are hanging out in the motel parking lot. Good people and good stories. Sometimes your car will even get worked on by the 914 Brain Trust (hopefully earlier in the evening rather than later)!

Parking in Jerome is a PITA on the weekends, just so u know. But going from Jerome to Prescott down 89a is a real good winding road for the 914s. But not to many passing lanes. There's some pull overs, but some slow drivers don't know what they're for...Also Haunted Hambuger is a good place to have eats. The wife and I go to the Gurley Grill a lot, good food.

It seems to be the only ethanol free gas in Flagstaff if you want it. Maybe we should get a few 5 gallons of VP Racing 100 and split it up!

So far it is either over rich and cool at 75 mph or tuned for mileage and heading for 400 degrees. I want something in between. Tired of a sooty valence. Tools needed to make adjustments will fit in your pocket, so it is a good opportunity to dial in.

It does look like an excellent "Route 66" event is going take place. All the places and the roads leading to the event do provide experiences as well as meeting with the different participants.

I am jealous!! I no longer live in Flagstaff and really do miss driving the roads you will be taking. This year looks like it will be the first time I will have a 914 running and I am not in Flagstaff. I will be taking it to the WCR in Medford in May which is going to be a first. Still building but the car is with the painter and hoping to get it back by the end of February; then assembly and whatever.

We may join you in a couple of years since we are planning on buying a second home in the Albuquerque area.

Can a Non-Participant purchase a shirt? I will need to know where to send the money and what the postage costs are. I probably take an xxl. Please let me know if I can purchase.

Have a great time since it is a great event for us 914 caretakers!

I've been keeping my eye on gas prices as well ... leaving So Cal for Payson on Monday. I saw one station in CA just before the AZ border selling for $1.42/gal

Not so far this year. Knock on wood. All the weather is passing below us. If you have rent the U-Haul to get out of the snow you can always turn it in when you hit clear roads. Last year we left on clear roads and hit bad weather south of Mpls...

Thanks but Wow guys! that's really far north on my route. I'm scared I'm not going to make it out of the state much less north of Denver. But maybe I can catch you guys on the road. Weather is going to play a huge part in my journey. May have to head directly south done 35 to 70 to Denver and then south. SoCal'rs, How 'bout this. Since we anticipate multiple cars we will need a staging area to begin our journey. I suggest we meet @ Ruby's Diner (4.5 stars on yelp) on the 10 @ Cabazon. They open at 0700. Meet n eat, depart 0800 for Kingman. If you run late you'll only miss breakfast but not hold up the group. In reality we will need a 15 min fuel/"pit stop" enroute. Add another 15 min's for Murphy and we are looking @ a 12-12:30 Kingman arrival.

There's some great opportunities for photo ops in Sedona or even in the overlook area above Oak Creek Canyon. Sedona has beautiful red rock sites and although smaller than Moab and Arches, it's still breathtaking! I wish I still had the pic of my car with a couple of skinny dippin' beauties draped on the hood taken at Slide Rock back in college days before it became a State Park!

Well, you can scrub me from the "maybe" list. Not to be a downer, just can't make it. My car is running great, though it still has a cosmetic issue to fix whilst also getting the camber set up better on the passenger's side rear, but those aren't the reasons.

Rt66 has always been a favorite of mine! I'll miss seeing all the cool kids on the attendee list! You hep cats enjoy, and don't do anything I wouldn't have done. Or something. Take lotsa pictures and post them!

Kinda boring drive in Utah eh. I will be traveling through scenic Iowa, Nebraska, North Texas and maybe Oklahoma or Missouri. For more than a thousand miles it will not vary more than about 200 feet from 800 ft above sea level. I pity the fool who has to drive through Utah into Canyon Lands.

I'm sticking with my original stop in Cabazon. That is unless no one wants to meet up for breakfast, in which case I will run solo. I can run solo as I don't have the 40 yo engine reliability issues that most have. Hey Elyut, bring an extra valve. And yes, it is way cheaper to fly 2 dogs than one human.

Have fun what ever route you choose. Added benefit to the Cabazon route is that gas is relatively cheaper in Cabazon. (The Indians told the EPA to blow in the wind)

I am simply suggesting that for those of us going north up the 15 toward the 40, means (for coastal folks) negotiating Riverside, Moreno Valley, Beaumont, and Banning before open desert driving if taking the 10E - then the 101 around Phoenix to the 17 North / and as a property owner on the Scottsdale/Glendale line I have driven that boring route dozens of times. And, if you hit the 101 at the wrong time trying to get to the 17N (other than at 1am) you can be in for a real thrill at 15 MPH to crawl up to the 17/ Been there - done that.

Have fun however you get there / I am out.

Cabazon is well out of the way for SD. He would probably be coming up the 215 and would have to make a right turn on 60 and go about 30 miles.

When I have gone to Flagstaff before, I go 215 to 15 to 40 and out 40 to Flag unless I have a passenger out of Las Vegas. If you are coming in from Cabazon, I would jump the 210 in Redlands to 215 in San Bernardino.

When we went to the River with the boat, I would wait at the 138 exit off 15 for the others to pass by and then jump on the 15. Like I said, there is a MickeyD's there and I don't remember the other ptomaine palace.

I gas up before I go and then again in Kingman (cheap). It's 4.5 hours from Riverside to Kingman.

Don't bother trying to run US66 out of Barstow for the thrill .... the asphalt has come apart from Newberry Springs to ? and it's hell on the 914 suspension (and your teeth).

Ok, for those of us that are coming from the Southern Left Coast, we have two routes we can take:

1.) 15 to Barstow to 40 to Flag. (433 miles)

2.) 10 to 62 thru Morongo Valley / Johusa Tree / 29 Palms to Parker, up 95 thru Lake Havasu City to 40 (21 miles outside of Needles) to Flag. (445 miles)

I just reinstalled the motor, trans, axles-starter-exhaust, fresh air box, gas tank, pump, wiper linkage, dash, stereo, speakers, etc....

crawled in last night and it turns over
no fuel - no starting....
even though every inch of fuel line was replaced... the pump energizes but nothing comes out...


oh well


now If it will run, then I only have to pull both door panels, pull the rest of the interior, re-glue the back glass, and readjust the side glass...

etc...
etc....
etc...

You know that sounds like the pump oughta be pretty bloated by now if that be the case. Gas oughta be going somewheres. I suppose it is one of the funny triple inlet outlet jobs with internal flow?

Removed the tools from the floorboard and installed the pass seat.
The new jumpbox didn't want to work today, so the only electrical I got done was installing a switch for the shop lights.
Decided to install the matching frunk lock, but the rad shroud got in the way so blew the rest of the evening looking for the matching door handles etc. Found half. Did get the door latches out and cleaned, as they were gummed up.

Any progress is good.

There was never a 'group discount rate'. That was just the normal quoted price of the rooms at the time.
I sure wasn't going to give them my credit card number to hold a block of rooms. Not for this group.
I just picked places that were up to our high standards and had enough rooms available.

They also charged me more. The second hotel was out of rooms or maybe it was the first one said they were out of rooms. I told them I was with the Porsche club and they found me a room. The second hotel was out of cheap rooms, however they did take my AAA discount, so that helped a little bit. I will mention AAA discount when I check into the first hotel to see if they honor it. Every little bit helps. My wife is still trying to get the days off, but we will see.
