914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Need parking brake cable

Posted by: #1RAGE Jun 13 2003, 07:58 PM

The parking brake cable on my 914 is almost gone. Half of it has frayed off right behind the brake handle.

I talked to my mechanic and he said that the places he normally orders parts from don't have any and he will likely have to order from Porsche in Germany. He couldn't give me a price but he said the last one he bought went for about $90 (~70 USD). I can't imagine why a simple steel cable should cost this much.

Does anyone know of any alternatives? I was thinking that maybe a different type of cable would work as long as it is similar in size and strength. Or maybe someone here has some that he/she could sell to me?

What should I do? I'd hate to pay $90 for a cable.

Thanks, cool.gif

Put an ad in the classifieds section under parts wanted. Someone should be able to hook you up.

Or drive it till it breaks and then worry about it. It's not like there is a lot of hills in Saskatoon to worry about having to use the parking brake. biggrin.gif

Let me look thru my boxes of parts and if I find one I'll send it to ya.
Email me your address.
After you get it, send me what you think its worth.

Remember that the parking brake cable assembly is actually three (3) seperate pieces. There is the:

Now, if your mechanic is giving you all three for $90, it's a bargain. If he is charging you $90 for just the short cable, tell him that you will provide the part yourself. Pelican has the http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/autocat/load_page.cgi?page_number=2&bookmark=8&model=9144&currsection=brakes in stock for $45.50.

I bought one last year from either Auto Atlanta or another place that sells used stuff on ebay reguarly... it wasn't in an ebay list, but I called them up and they gave me the handle and the short cables for $45... a mechanic put the part on for $70 and adjusted the back calipers to make it work(I was in a time crunch and needed it fixed asap)

call junk yards too

Thanks everyone. biggrin.gif

I got a few leads to follow up on now.

Yes, I do need the short cable that attaches to the handle. I believe that is all I need however I never really checked the other two cables yet.
