914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914/6 restoration - The Hunt for NOS Parts

Posted by: IAA1963 Feb 19 2016, 03:25 PM

Hi,

I have bought a 914/6 as a project car - matching numbers and tangerine. It is a long term project and I am aiming to bring my /6 back to the original condition as it left the factory 1970 without any performance upgrades or so.

I started early to hunt for NOS parts and thought to start sharing some photos of these parts instead of posting photos of metal work.

You are a sick individual...I like it and appreciate that someone else has more patience and dedication than I do!

Nice score on those parts...total opposite my build, trying not to buy a single new item smile.gif

Some nice parts you have there. I'm hunting NOS parts too. Slow process.

Posted by: SirAndy Feb 19 2016, 03:45 PM

If you don't mind, can you look at the part numbers and add them to the parts vault if they aren't already there?

Indeed a slow process, but always a joy when you get another part smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

I'm really impressed with your efforts and results. You have some great finds, especially the muffler. Chasing down NOS six parts can become an obsession. I've been doing the same for about 25 years!

That is very cool. I was recently at a members house where we looked at all of his Nos 914-6 parts in very well organized shelving units.. It was unbelievably cool to see all the rare parts even had an NOS Gt roof

What year is your 6?

The targa top, at least on the 1970, had no carpet.....

Just sayin....

Cuz I am envious of your stash.... beerchug.gif

My /6 is a 1970 and when I bought it the roof did not have a carpet. I thought it has been removed in the past.

I have checked the parts manual and got the impression that there should be a roof carpet for a /6 and also got this info from another /6 owner. So am I wrong in this point?

Posted by: r_towle Feb 20 2016, 04:21 PM

I bet you are having a lot of fun hunting and buying those parts.

Good luck with your list of needs, and don't be shy to post here if you get stuck looking for something hard to find.

My /6 did not have roof carpet when I bought it in 1977. It also had a slightly different style rubber strip for the top of the windows that did not seal as well. I picked up a newer roof many years ago with carpet.

Early window seals had an additional lip that was later eliminated.

Early 6's did not have headliner in the roof, as far as I know.
My car didn't when I bought it from the dealer in 73
and the PO didn't know which end of a screw driver to hold
so I doubt he removed it.

What is the game. I am well versed in the used part market but where does one hunt down these NOS parts?

How does one effectively search the Porsche dealership network?? What other NOS sources are there??

Posted by: sbsix Feb 25 2016, 05:10 PM

It's part of the fun tracking some of these parts down. I have found six parts in Germany at Porsche; swap meets can be a source. The old Ventura, CA Porsche meet used to be an unbelievable place to find NOS six parts, but it no longer exists.

The NLA/NOS parts bin for 914-6s is pretty much dried up, but a lot of the old timers (me included) have been sitting on our stashes for years. I started stock piling NOS six parts starting 25 years ago and still have them for the day I repaint my car and install them. When I finally get to it, I'll sell all my existing stock of new & used parts. At least I think I will. Searching is half the fun.

Posted by: 914Sixer Feb 25 2016, 05:23 PM

Up to about 2000 there was quite a stock pile of -6 parts at Porsche in Germany, then the parts started flying of the shelf when lots of conversions started.

Posted by: raynekat Feb 26 2016, 06:18 AM

Wow....love seeing all these NOS parts.
I know it's a disease no doubt about it.
But what a great disease to have....if you must have one.

I know how tough some of these parts are to locate.
Just makes it that more important to try and restore as many of the parts on your car as possible.
Still nothing like seeing an NOS part come out of it's original wrapping.
A thing of beauty!

Posted by: IAA1963 Feb 26 2016, 10:02 AM

Hunting and collecting these old NOS parts is great thing ... and if they come in original packing it's even better. It's part of a long restoration process and it shortens the time in a very good way.

I have started NOS hunting with the purchase of my /6 more than 3 years ago. I am searching wordwide, but non of the parts I bought directly out of a Porsche dealer shop. A lot of parts are leftovers from guys who had these cars years ago and they bought it as spares. But also private collectors, ebay, restoration shops etc. are good sources.

BTW - I am trying to find a NOS targa roof seal - the early version for sure smile.gif
Maybe someone can help here?

BTW ... I have also some old rubber stuff like this ...

Really nice popcorn[1].gif

At the end it would be great to hear how much you invested over all!

Most of NOS-parts are pricey and you pay a lot more for the "original" old package.

However, keep on collecting.

Headliner, are you sure the top was not replaced by someone else? Especially if the owner didn't know how to use a screw driver.
I've seen a 71 - 6 with a headliner and I doubt the Dr that owned it had the time and knowledge to change it out.
As for the original poster, good luck and I would hate to see the amount you've invested. ...but then, no one ever mentioned that it would be inexpensive while we are having fun.

While it is possible the roof had been changed out very early in it's life,
I bought the car from the dealership that sold it new and took it back in trade
when the warranty was about to expire. So the roof would have to have been
replaced in less than 24,000 miles or 2 years. Anything is possible though

Not looking to hijack this thread... The NOS parts
are awesome to see..

There is a thread in the Originality Forum discussing
the differences between 4's and 6's and they do
mention headliners on roofs, or the lack of on early
cars.

1970 /4 No headliner when new.

Posted by: GeorgeRud May 31 2017, 08:02 AM

My 70 -6 had no headliner. Also, the early window seals did not have the extra lip that the later ones did.

Great thread on the NOS parts, but I'm afraid that more folks will start hoarding these instead of using them.

Fair enough reply ,seems the OP has some stuff covered but not what I would say are essential items ,IMO they have dryed up now and may be out there but @ mental prices,we need to remember these cars were never mass produced so parts are like rocking horse poo.
Power to anyone that has the $$$ to do this.

Posted by: IAA1963 Jun 27 2017, 02:29 PM

To hunt for a NOS parts is fun, but even better so see them all going in my /6 project ... except the targa roof carpet ... this will stay away as I have learned biggrin.gif

Cool to see NOS parts installed with the label still attached. Not meaning to rain on your parade, but if the car just rolled off the assembly line there would be no labels on the parts. If you were to see a car only a few years old and it had parts with labels on it you would think it had been wrecked.

Can anyone share more details on this antenna? Additional photos and / or measurements? I assume it's what would have come from the factory for: M453 Blaupunkt Frankfurt US retractable antenna with loudspeaker & noise suppression

I think this is the "correct" one installed by dealers across the USA, since (as far as I know) they did not come from the factory installed in the cars.

I’m only a little jealous. I guess I don’t have the patience to do all of the detective work to find the pats you have. I have to clean and replace/restore all of the original parts take off of my -6 in 1975 when it was disassembled and generic parts from a 1972 parts car that I have.

I have only driven a couple of stock -6’S and they have kind of underwhelmed me. I think you can make a few enhancements that no one will notice to make a much better driving experience. You don’t have to tell anyone…….
