Hello Dr Evil...

Can you tell me what the deal is with the CV bolts? I'm going to drop my engine soon; are the bolts required to be replaced? How many are required and how much do they cost?

Thanks!!

Posted by: skline Mar 23 2005, 11:03 PM

Well,.he is a starving college student now trying to work his way through Med school so from now on, if you have to ask, they are $300.00 per set. Think of it as a donation and your safety when driving. biggrin.gif

seriously - it's the track/driving season starting up here in the snow belt, and i think this would be a BIG hit with the 911 guys, most of whom are not as cheap as us 914 guys - unless of course they have 914's too :-)

Posted by: ChrisFix Mar 24 2005, 06:57 AM

Okay, I'll buy enough to do both sides, so I think that is an order for two sets.

As far as I know you don't need to replace the bolts, just the schnorr-type lock washer.

What is special about these bolts? Are they different than the stock bolts?

Posted by: dinomium Mar 24 2005, 11:13 AM

I need a set, too!

as it was stated back in the beginning of the thread, they are different in two ways which you may or may not consider important:

1) they are 12,9 stainless; the OEM bolts are traditional 12,9 carbon steel.
2) they are pre-drilled for safety wire. *properly wired* they will not come loose.

if you don't have the facilities or desire to safety wire the bolts, they will offer you no substantial benefit. i don't know that there are (m)any cases of a factory-installed halfshaft coming adrift. cases of halfshafts coming adrift after using new factory bolts and new Schnorr lockwashers properly torqued are rare or unknown.

still, for the peace of mind and as part of general track preparation, i wire all my CV bolts. clearly the factory didn't think it important for street service or they'd have done it. if you are carefull about the quality of the bolts you use and use new proper lockwashers, for a car in street service, i wouldn't think them necessary either. lots of us do 'unnecessary' things every day - some times because it looks cool, sometimes for the additional peace of mind.

ya pays yer money and takes yer choice.

Must have been a different thread. Thanks for the info.

Okey dokey. Yup, there wer more than I figured, but none has paid yet, so we will see. I will make extras, but give me some time to get it set up. All who ask/asked for sets will get sets, eventually.

ArtechnikA, I believe that these bolts are the 12.9 carbon steel, not stainless. If I had said they were stainless before, I appologize for the missinformation. They are still better than the orriginal, but they are NOT stainless.

If this matters to anyone, let me know when I PM you about the bill and I will take you off of the list.

This next batch are the correct length, 45mm, too. As always, I checked with my supplier about my specs and these will provide perfect service.

At present, I need to make 11 more sets.....word sure got out on this. smilie_pokal.gif

On a last note, I don't use paypal due to my thin proffit margin. I do accept checks and MOs, though. I'll be contacting the 1st 15 set buyers.

Posted by: Gint Mar 24 2005, 08:31 PM

Email an address and I'll send a check.

Posted by: anthony Mar 24 2005, 08:38 PM

Just a suggestion - let people pay the extra $.75 if they want to use paypal. It might be a lot easier than collecting checks.

Posted by: jkeyzer Mar 24 2005, 08:46 PM

Mike, 2 sets for me, but you already knew that (even if I didn't tell you). biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

CV flanges can and do fall off.

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 24 2005, 08:47 PM

Anthony,
I appreciate the suggestion, but getting t\the money out of paypal is a PITA that I don't feel like doing. I have a hole in my account for fronting the 120 bolts that I just bought, and other supplies. Checks work best for me and require less work on my end.

For those of you who have gotten the first orders in, I encourage you to post your oppinions here to help people that are on the fence move either way. I wanna here if you like/dislike anything. Could I improve? Ya'll happy?

I have little doubt they'll be just fine.

Check's in the mail! It was hard work too... wink.gif

No problem, it's your deal and you can certainly do whatever is easiest for you.

Mike,

Have these shipped?

Posted by: Qarl Apr 1 2005, 09:55 PM

I had put my name on the list earlier in this thread... but was never contacted...

Posted by: Gint Apr 1 2005, 10:47 PM

He only had 15 sets Karl. By the time you posted, there weren't any left (provided everyone before you actually paid).

Posted by: Dr Evil Apr 2 2005, 02:13 AM

Felix,
I have been swamped with work so I havent made all of the sets yet. I will be making them Sun night and shipping them on Tues (I need to package and get supplies). I have over 180 bolts to make so it takes a bit. If I haven't cashed your check yet, then I haven't made your bolts yet. I don't like cashing checks before the product is done.
I hope that I am not inconveniencing you, or anyone else. If there are rush orders (like, "I need them to put my car together by XX date) just let me kow and I will prioritize them.
Thanks for your patience biggrin.gif

Quarl,
I will start a second list from those of you on this list that didn't get any. You will be on it, and I will let you know. Again, if there are rush needs, let me know.

Mike,

My earliest need will be next weekend so don't sweat it. Do you have any recommended wiring techniques? Link or doc would be great...

Synthesisdiv (davidr) posted this image in the original thread; it shows the essentials - you loop the wire in such a way as the tension tightens both bolts.

Carroll Smith's "Prepare To Win" will tell you about it; everybody preparing a competition car should have this book.

proper stainless 0.032" safety wire and a pair of safety wire pliers (all the race-prep places have them) will make the job lots easier, but it can be done with small vise-grip pliers and care.
