Well,
As the season approaches, the snow continues to fall and the heating oil prices continue to rise the car is coming together nicely. Many of you know I had scare last month and almost had to sell it. But the problem was averted and now I'm back on track. Or so I think. Got some new photos of the dash fabrication and gauge mounting the seat is in and the suspension only needs two grade ten bolts to finish it up. So heres some photos. Next week motor install with Hewland transmission, and the new header fabrication.
Attached image(s)
Another shot of the dash, thought I should have angled it a bit more towards me but I can see the gauges well.
Attached image(s)
What type of shifter, and cable setup is that?
Engine compartment photos. This is the engine mount Steve Limbert makes at aircooled racing, and the other piece is the fuel distribution.

Now thats a mirror, I may have to shorten this stock, but don't want the thing to get into my line of sight. Thats why it is so high.

Lotta nice details there. Well done.
How many racecars have you built?

looks like a standard shift rod with an aircraft Apex coupler on it. |
I fabricated the shift tower and lever from 6061 T6 and the bushings are replacable delrin. The cable is a fire bottle actuation cable and not part of the shifter. I had to do this because the car has a Hewland dog ring transaxle (they shift a bit better), and the shift shaft could not be routed in the standard location, so a new shaft was fabricated and a new path was determined.
Over the past 30 years probably 20-22 cars. Some customer cars, some mine some factory stuff. Nice that stuff (962). But I wish I had the time to make most of it really nice. Some things are a compromise of time and cost and materials. This project is just that. If i had the time I would have bead blasted the chassis and started with a clean slate. But did not have the time.
As for shift box, I have seen too many that are not strong enough. this is CLEARLY not the case with this tower. Although I am sure I could have made it much lighter. But the sides are milled out to lighten it up heres a photo. BTW thats Foleys welding on this piece. Nice Huh! Thanks Chris.

What's the deal with the link at the bottom of the shifter. Is the shift rod located by a bushing at the front and back of the shifter tower? Doesn't it just need to rotate and slide back and forth?

Looks good. Very nice work. The talent you and other people on this board have always impresses me.
I was wondering if the location of the mirror on the cowl/deflector will be stable enough to prevent vibration without some bracing below? (Edited: From the following photos I see that the mirror is actually mounted to a bracket and not to the cowl. Duh! )
Eric.... looking good!!!
BTW... it's Kevin (me) with the EP 4 cyl that Jake's working on, not Brett W.

most of our shifters have the fixed pivot in the "middle" of the lever and the link rod attached to the bottom. this one has the link rod attached to the middle, and therefore needs a 'fixed' pivot at the bottom. it's constrained fore-and-aft by the link rod, and yet can rotate by virtue of the compliance in the other axis. |
Yeah Kevin I knew that, just had a brain fart. started happening when I turned 35. Then 38 then......
As for the shifter I copied the fulcrum points out of a swift formula car and then changed the length of the shift lever trying to keep the same ratio, but the ratio for to aft will be the same but the left to right rotation will be more due to the increase in length. But, it feels really good when I had the mock up transmission in the car. It was pretty funny watching my wife playing creeper spining the wheels while I shifted. I wish I had a photo. Some more progress tonight, got the fuel cell plumbing completed, although I am not completely happy with the vent, but it is legal. Got the Tilton brake Bias adjuster mounted, OOPS forgot that, glad I left some room on the dash. Finally figured out what I am doing about the front brake lines. Again, slight compromise, but it must get done. I have exactly 8 days until I must be completed and pass SCCA tech. We'll see. Some more photos.

Fuel cell, anyone with fears about dumping fuel vapor into the wheel well?? well at least its not on my side of the car. Hopefully it won't give the car a flame job.
Erik

where an i find a tach like that? whats the diameter?
Aaron,
It was the tach that came with the shell I bought. It is a VDO and the opening is somewhere about 2 3/4 inches. It's okay.
Anyone.
Have been searching for a Data logging system. And wish I had the scratch to build the car with just a digital display, again the concessions. Anybody got a winning lottery ticket they can share??? . Wife just got a new Yukon, well new to us, used Yukon non XL, nice SUV. Kinda feel bad for supporting opec. Any painters in the New England area that won't pork me for some shine???

Erik,
Is that your oil cooler sitting back behind the fuel cell? Are you going to run ducts to it from the front?
Rob
Another EP 914-6
Yeah,
I agree with the debris especially since the tire is right there. I was going to attach a little K&N filter to keep out the dirt. I think it might a problem if I don't.
As for the Oil cooler, yes, the cooler s in the bulkhead and it is ducted front the front fog lamp area. With two three inch hoses and two very large brake ducts turned around backwards to act as a divergent duct to slow the air down around the cooler. The ducting after the cooler is convergent to the fresh air inlet on the cowl, I was concerned intially about the pressure area in front of the windscreen, but with the low screen it is not a factor, but it would be in a closed car with a windscreen. At least thats what my testing indicates.
Erik
Data logging.... and dash....
AIM system. I went with the Mychron 3 XL Log or something like that. It will display everything I need. But not enough channels for the EGT. So, I'll have the AIM display and a 4 cyl EGT guage.
So, for $1275: 2 CHTs, OT, OP, throttle position, wheel speed, RPM, gear, lateral accel and interpolated longitudinal accel, display and logging.
I'm very excited about it.
I got it through Veracity Data Systems (Dave Ferguson's wife did the deal).
Yeah, I've been looking at them. I know the Mychron Rep in VA. We call him Mychron Mike. He has some specs and is getting back to me on a price. Should be a very good choice, I am concerned about expandability of the system, I don't really think there is any? Not sure.
What I need is:
Display
4 suspension pots
throttle position
steering position
2 axis accelerometer
oil pressure
2 oil temps
2 cht
2 O2 wide band
lap timer
track mapping (does not have to be GPS)
Fuel pressure
4 other channels for possible strain gauging.
So this is a pretty big bill to fill. But when you buy one of these, you must consider the support available, I was considering Advantage motorsport, but they don't have a display. ?? Can't afford PI or Stack, even though they are the ones I am most familiar. Will see how MyChron (AIM) works for you.
Erik
The AIM Mychron and Pista have track mapping capability, but to log that many channels you'll have to go with the Pista.... add >$500 to the price tag. I gave up a few desires to get my price.
BTW... I figure at $1275 it cost about as much as a bunch of guage and a big tach, and I get track mapping a data logging at no "extra" cost.
Yeah,
It is cost effective, I would have gone soley with a display if the "donor" rust bucket, I mean racecar, already had some nice VDO stuff. But if you don't log data you don't really know much. Just what the lap time says. I hope to have this car done in the next 6 days. So what is left is to wire the car leaving room for the data system to add in the next couple weeks, but the regional tech is April 2, so it's April second or bust. Well not bust, well maybe broke as in penniless, after all the next day air stuff coming this week. LOL
Erik Madsen
So, I got a little busy this weekend, Header fab, brake brake lines figured out what I am gonna do for the SCCA fuel test port. Cut down my alternator shaft, broke my lathe. ETC.... The list goes forward two and back one??? Some pictures for you guys. Tilton 5.5 clutch and the Hewland and exhaust fab.
Erik
The Tilton pic should have a caption, "Do I make you randy baby"?
Attached image(s)
OOPs Tilton I said. Fingers not listening.

Header Fabrication, Not Bad, just need to add the mufflers. Wish I could've done what I wanted to do with these Collectors. Had another Y pipe and some stainless tubing, but did not have the room, Thats okay, will be making a new set of headers in a couple months for the Runoffs. Tri Y one muffler. V band clamp right down the middel so I can change the outlet where the sound meter isn't.
Erik
Attached image(s)
Another, Without the rotor rust. And this is inside, Maybe I should get a dehumidifyer?
Attached image(s)
Are you gonna put some sort of balance tube twixt the headers?
Thought about it, but when I was on the dyno, it did'nt make any difference. At least at the RPMS I was concerned 4500 to 8750
Erik
You need my shocks instead of those HEAVY Koni yellows.
Impressive work!
for the fuel vent, but a few loops in the line, then run the vent basically anywhere you want have the exit end of the hose higher than the loops If you do get fuel migrating out the vent hose it will get trapped in the loops (kinda like a sink trap)
About the data logging. I have the Mychron 3 gold for my 911, and the DL90 thats in my 914 now.. I havent used the Mychron 3 yet, but it seems to be a very capable/quality unit. The DL90 is a really good piece also, easy to use software, and a number of data channels..
We have two cars with the MoTec ADL dash, and from what I can see the Aim logger displays are muy bueno..
Another logger dash I looked into is http://www.racepak.com/udx.html
and Corsa Instruments makes nice loggers and displays..
Agree with you on the Shocks, Have Ohlins for the rear just haven't had time to install them. Plan ongoing with Kanna motorsports and then shaking the car at the Ohlins suspension rig. Need to verify the Oerall package first then spend money on the stinky shit.
As for the ADL and so forth, I am impressed by the AIM stuff, so I am probably going to go that way. As for the car, thanks for you kind words and the 930 rocker shaft seals as well. Got them from you a long time ago.
Maybe I'll stop in next time I'm on LI visiting one of my dealers.
Erik
I've been getting busy lately, After a debacle with an electromotive sensor holder (don't ask) and new axle bolts that were too long, got some grade 12 stuff. The wiring has become a nightmare, well not really. Just time consuming the way I want it done. BTW way does anyone have a wiring diagram?? Just kidding. Pics included.

Spent Friday building the car in hopes of going to a regional tech session on Saturday. My Sister lending a hand and chasing parts all over Massachusetts, Thanks to Rene' at Rensport for having a new VDO oil pressure sending unit in stock, I don't even want to knwo what it costs, I have to replace it. Got the clutch hydraulics plumbed, the car wired but for two small items and a CHT sensor lead under the spark plug, 10 Minute job.
Exhaust mufflers and hangers fabricated, engine assembly finished. Tranmission assembly finished, axles on, New CV's packed, don't ask where I got them , they have none left. Heres some more photos. Mostly of the wiring and its routing.

I snapped this photo at about 5:15 AM April 2, The tech session is only 5 hours away, and I realize I am not going to make it after working through the night. You know its bad when the trash pile gets this big in 8 hours.

I completely changed my throttle cable asembly, even made a new cable. So I needed a new bracket, can anyone identify this piece of stock. The only difference in this and the original is the length, one extra hole drilled into it and two holes enlarged. Hint, it does not belong in the engine compartment or bolts into the engine compartment. Pics of course.
Erik

I also wanted to mount the fuel distribution so that it would stay cool, so how about on top of the engine shelf and in front of the fan, Should get okay air flow and made the plumbing very easy.

Jeroen,
Yes, Cowl Support, had an extra, looked like a match for the bracket I needed. Need to paint it though.

Well its finally done!
As I said before, It needs paint, Imagine what YOU can do with 200 $ worth of decals. And no I'm not a cop. The decals just fit into my black gelcoat fender theme.

Motor finished, more on that in a couple more posts, Tryign to house break the little girl. No quite yet. If you need plug wires don't buy these they suck. Accel for my Electromotive. I'll be buying some Clewett Engineering wires next week, it took me literally 90 minutes to put 6 plug wires on the plugs. Not properly designed for a Porsche. But what should I expect, I bought the wires for a chevy V 8 as suggested by a friend er ah... an aquaintance. No good. But it does run and they do work.

In case anyone has forgotten, this IS the number you call if you need to call the cops, fire departemnt or have a medical emergency. I just thought I would make it easy for my neighbors to call when I go for a blast up and down the street. Actually they are all very supportive, many seeing the car in the driveway for the first time. What is really the best, is I live right next to a golf course, can't stand the game. And when I mean right next to I mean the 13th T box is 20 yards from my front door. I love firing racecars or motorcycles up when they are about to T up. Racecar firing up while driving......Priceless.

Some of my reasons for going with this scheme:
Initially thought I could get some DARE money from the state, but the program is not going on anymore.
My local cops are good guys, but getting them to do anything about the assholes that are late for their T time driving down my street at 70 MPH, so I thought I could park this at the end of my driveway, and at least get a couple morons to shit themselves and stomp on the brakes. Just today it's work three times. I thought one woman was going to drive straight into my front yard trying to slow down her Excursion. Same broad I yelled at last summer. Next time, I'm gonna throw a rake at her.

Another 1/4 front view, oh and my 100lb yellow lab. Great dog, only bit me once, last Sunday. Thought we were playing, he did'nt. Got me in the finger. Only a little blood. No where near as much blood as this car drew.

and Good Luck next weekend at NHIS.
I noticed there are a few other EP cars entered.
Do you remember that I said the little girl was not house broken yet, Yes this is a photo of her peeing on my driveway. Pressure leak from an upper case bolt, rolled the o'ring when I assembled it. Shroud off, problem found, new oring, a little sealant, while its drying, I am posting. This should be the last thing I need to do before the race next week. Be traveling on business this week. Need to ship some stuff out to you guys. Been kind of lax on that. I apologize! Been working. So what do you think?????

Post Script: I could use some crew help at NHIS the first week in May for the National, Both Chris Foley and I will be there. I need someone that can do tire temps, and nut and bolt a car, have some reasonable mechanical skill as to be able to check wheel torque, run a stop watch etc.. any takers, gate fee paid. Contact me at 508-947-1079 or 508-524-3145

After a little looking and some investigation I have found the leak. A case stud had a partially torn o'ring allowing an oil leak while the engine was running. I hope this is the only one, everything else looked dry as your grandaddys scalp. I did get one zip up the street and the shifter is precise and crisp. but at less than 40 MPH, there's not much you can tell. I will be at the alignment shop next Friday and corner balance at a friends on Friday PM.
Still need crew help!

If by that statement you mean that you will be pitted with Chris Foley I will have to decline as I simply do not like the man. I will not go into details here (it is neither fare/or appropriate to do so on this forum) but I have no interest in spending any time in his company besides I would be of little help since I would have to keep one hand on my wallet the entire weekend! |
Eric if you need help please let me know. I can get myself and my son to help with the essentials, and the bonus is we get along with chris foley really well so you guys can paddock together. Send a pm and we'll see what we can do
Erik (Thorshammer) went away on a business trip for a few days but he helped me figure out who this AssFault lowlife is.
I would have never thought of it on my own since it seemed so trivial at the time it happened. Apparently it was a traumatic experience for him. It happened six years ago! and was our only mutual experience.
This motorcycle racer Charlie C. came to my shop with a desperate need for a seat support bracket since his own aborted attempt let him down and he nearly totalled his bike. He was being sponsored by an acquaintance of mine from a former job and the sponsor told him to go see me.
No mention was made of the fact that Charlie didn't have a pot to piss in so I made up what I thought was a good sturdy lightweight frame to help keep his fat ass on the bike and charged him accordingly. He about shit his pants when I gave him the bill but to his credit he did pay me the full amount. I heard about the financial trauma later from his sponsor and again when I became acquainted with Erik (who was a motorcycle race in his former life).
Charlie definitely doesn't belong on this forum! He is so cheap he makes 914 owners look like millionaires. I'm pretty sure he'll never own any Porsche.
Oops, I just realized Charlie didn't want to go into the details on this forum because it isn't fare or appropriate here. I guess he hasn't spent much time on the 914 club and doesn't know the moderation rules.
Charlie, you should be more careful where you air your dirty laundry.
Guys,
I would be honored to crew for either one of you.
Let me know the time and the place...
Rich
PM me and I will give you my cell.
I can bring whatever you need for tools.
I live about 1.5 hours from loudon.
Rich and Guy,
The regional race is this weekend April 17th it is only a one day affair due to the drivers school being on Saturday.
I need one person to help with the car. It is new, so things like nut and bolt checks and leak checks when I come in and Pyrometer check the tires would be much appreciated. This weekend is just a shakedown, and to survive the regional. I am going to try and be competitive, but the overall objective is to learn the car and foil any problems before they foil me. April 30th and May1 is the National and I hope to be competitive and get some points there. That weekend will be spent tuning on Thursday, nut and bolting the car on Friday and checking over. Saturday will be prac/qualifying and then a Sunday race. If you can make it up for only one day, please let me know, the gate fee will be paid, and lunch served as long as you like the restaurant at the track. Please call me to indicate what date you can assist. It would be very helpful. This weekend there will be limited time, but maximum effort will be needed to get the car on the track safely. I do not plan on qualifying at qualifying pace as the engine will be new and the chassis will be the same,. but hope that during the race the times will come down as the event race happens.
Erik Madsen

Gotta work this weekend, but I am up for the national.
I am sure to be there for sunday, possibly thurs or friday as well.
If you want, I could come by this friday afternoon/night 4/16 to go over the car...nuts and bolts check.
Rich
Pete and Mary will be with me at the National. Pete has a temporary SCCA membership (for now) so he can go in the hot pits.
I think I'm in pretty good shape since the car ran well at Summit Point. If things are going well for me I can spare Pete to help with Erik's car, especially taking tire temps.
In addition to Erik's lunch offer for crew there should be beer and munchies after the event.
Anyone is welcome to visit us. Just remember, I'm not supposed to socialize until after the race. My crew chief will be enforcing that rule.
Erik, if you fill up your crew list I have an extra space at this point.
Eric, I'll be in Fort Wayne till Sat. afternoon, but will try to help out on sunday. I'll give the cell a call.
Guy
Wicked Pisser!
It's a New England thing you would'nt understand.
Sunday help would be great. They are planning on two practice sessions which they call "qualifying". This is the way they can get away with cancelling the second "session" which I need badly. The field is only 4 at this time, and I know John Lietner will go decent in his BMW, one guy in a Rx7 will be no problem, and another racer I don't know, so it's looking okay so far, but the engine will have a self imposed rev limit. We'll See. Call me on the cell to arrange for your help on it will be appreciated.
Erik
Progress Update:
The race weekend went okay, heres what went on with the car itself.
Alignment:
Front:
1 degree negative camber in the front, 1/32 toe out 30 degrees caster, will change to 2.5 next weekend
Rear:
45 minutes of camber in the rear with 0 toe
Corner balanced to LF 437 RF 446
LR 544 RR 539 or 1966 lbs with 2 gals of gas and 50lbs of lead in the car. So it weighs 1954 LBS without fuel, also known in aviation circles
"Zero Fuel Weight" Not bad, I hope nothing falls off. It has a little crossweight in the car, but I am not concerned. Absolute dry without driver is 1750 lbs without lead. Not bad, and I can take more off the car. I found some lead in plate form about 3/8 of an inch thick, which I can place in the car very low. I have the lead bolted to the right hand floor board just in front of the cross brace seemed like it was the right place. I'd like to move some weight to the front end to get a better balance although what I have is not bad.
The Hewland has survived the race, but the Inner CV (type 1 bug) has not. Some of you already know this from my other post. I have the removed the rear cover and shipped it to RIC Racing in Bow NH to modify the left to right throw of the shift lever and add a seal to the rear cover. Thats all for now.
Erik Madsen
I weighed mine on Sunday..... 1899 lbs with driver and 5 gallons.... and I still have steel hood, trunk and rear bumper, no lead yet.
56.1% rear bias and cross-weights are within 0.1%.... but the ride height is higher on the driver's side... gotta fix that, but not until after this weekend.
