914World.com _ 914World Garage _ First 914 off the assembly line?

Posted by: stevegm Mar 12 2016, 03:56 PM

If I've missed this info somewhere obvious, I'm sorry. Does anybody have any info related to the first 914 off the assembly line? When did the 1st car roll off the line? Production car or otherwise. I know the two 914-8s were early. But did the 4s come first? Or 6s first?

Anybody know where VIN 4702900001 is? What about 9140430001?

The 11th 6 was found and restored, there were before and after pictures on this site recently.
It's the 1st VIN listed in on this site.
All cars earlier were probably factory development chassis .... likely destroyed.

Here's what I've found so far:

914-6s began production - July, 1969
Public unveiling of the 914 - Frankfurt, August 1969
"Significant 914-6 production" - November, 1969
First 914-4 U.S deliveries (limited) - January, 1970
First 914-6 European deliveries - February, 1970
First 914-6 U.S. deliveries - March, 1970

Credit: Excellence was Expected.

But apparently it is unclear if that was just production of parts, or assembly of 914-6s in July 1969.

I don't know how accurate this is, but 914world has chassis #4702900001 in the Wolfsburg VW Museum. It's orange. I'd love to know if that's a verified VIN.

Thanks. I remember this now. I'm still trying to find the first 6, and when these rolled off the assembly lines.

Right,

I thought 004 was a prototype?

Andy and others know the reality of those first 1-10 cars, there has been a lot of research done, way back years ago.

Would make a great, non emotional story.

rolleyes.gif No. There is no correct placement. A few internally built cars had them. But no car you bought off a lot had an emblem. So unless your last name is Porsche, your car and any car you ever own, never had an emblem from the factory.

So put it wherever you want. yawn.gif

Nothing. I'm looking for the date production started. Or the build date of the first car.

You could have an Admin search through the chassis numbers (not the VIN#'s) in the database....that would get you towards the earliest chassis still alive outside the #1.

The first 10 cars were all prototypes. Number 11 was the first car sold.
