Posted by: Lawrence Mar 27 2005, 01:16 PM

Hi guys! We're flying into San Diego on the 16th. I'll be picking up the Aubergine wub.gif (not purple) car from Doctor Evil! monkeydance.gif

The plan is to eat dinner somewhere in between SD and Orange County... no solid plans where yet, but Scott and Mike and I have been talking about it. Because it's going to be a LONG day, I'm hoping for a place nearer to San Diego. chowtime.gif

Anyways, if you read this message you're welcome to join us. More details to follow! chatsmiley.gif

Are you driving it back?

Posted by: ArtechnikA Mar 27 2005, 03:17 PM

the problem is, 'between San Diego and Orange County' is Camp Pendleton.

i've been to several wonderful places in Del Mar but i donno if any are still around. i have no recollection of ever stopping in Carlsbad or Oceanside for anything but chain fast food. There are some good places in San Juan Capistrano.

Posted by: Aaron Cox Mar 27 2005, 03:18 PM

san juan is ok....san clemente....

salt creek grill etc...

that area is expensive though!

Posted by: type47fan Mar 27 2005, 03:43 PM

New HOOTER'S opening in O'side off of Hwy 78. . . .wait that's in May. . .never mind.

Posted by: john rogers Mar 27 2005, 06:30 PM

If you are in the SD area for the whole weekend and want to see what "real" racing is like, come on over to Tecate and watch the first race race of the 05 Baja series. We'll be there as will Ted with his 356, Marty and Robert from LS with their 914 and the Mitsu Evo 500HP monsters and a whole passel of VWs. Tecate is home to a pretty famous brewery too and the Tecate Girls!

Yep... driving it back.

Two potential routes right now:

1. Phoenix to Santa Fe to Denver to Kansas.
2. Vegas to Denver to Kansas.

Mostly weather dependent. Decision to be made the night before we depart San Diego. Gonna spend a day at SeaWorld. smile.gif

Oh great, now nobody will show up. biggrin.gif I have to agree with Aaron, you may want to consider coming up to around San Clemente or in the area. Not many down in SD anymore. I think once the good doctor leaves there will only be about 2 maybe 3 left down there that are active on the board. In OC and Riverside however, there are a lot. If you are going up to Vegas from there, you may want to just meet up somewhere on the way up. Maybe even Corona going up the 15 from SD to Vegas?

Posted by: carreraguy Mar 28 2005, 02:39 PM

I used to live in San Diego - in my book the best Mexican food (and margaritas) was at Fidel's Little Mexico in Solana Beach just north of Del Mar off I5.

Well, give me a suggestion. idea.gif

Here's the dealio. I'm going to be up at 4am Central time to make my flight. Figure a 7pm dinner, and the time change... that's 17-18 hours awake, including plane ride and everything else - just to start the evening. The hotel will be in SD. I'd love to see everyone... (cept Aaaron, of course), but driving two hours each way to dinner isn't realistic after that day.

There's a lot of nice places in San Diego. Depends what you want, how much you want to pay, etc. One of my favorites it Pat & Oscars, in Mission Valley. Close to Hotel Row, you can push tables together, casual, great food and prices, inside or outside seating.

Let me know, I'd like to do this.

Posted by: slivel Mar 28 2005, 06:23 PM

Where are you staying? Lots of great places to eat in San Diego - might as well be close to where you are staying. How much do you want to spend? Cheap is < $20, moderate is < $50 and expensive is ..... well expensive.

I'll try to come down for Rusty. I've got the week prior off, I'll see if I can swing a trip down to San Diego. Haven't been there since I was 8.

Jen

Posted by: Brando Mar 28 2005, 07:09 PM

The Dirty Waffle be a bit too far south for me to join 2+ hour for the drive.

Rusty, why not have dinner up a bit more north. Corona, Santa Ana, Murietta... You're heading north on the 15 anyways, right?

Posted by: Cloudbuster Mar 28 2005, 07:27 PM

Hmmm....

Staying in OC versus San Diego. I suppose OC is a veritable oasis compared to Corona. Not that I can talk down about Corona, since I live in El Cajon (at least it isn't Lakeside). I'd pick San Diego for my semi-vacation.

Pat & Oscars sounds like a decent proposal, price and space wise. Tho, I haven't been to the Karl Strauss Beer Gardens up with Sorrento Mesa in a long while... beerchug.gif

It sounds like Del Mar / Solana Beach is the northern limit of travel for Saturday.

Rusty, where abouts is your hotel? Downtown? Hotel Circle?

I'll answer, Clay....yes, I'm going with him. So....here's the real 'dealio' (I can't believe I even typed 'dealio'...)

*I* will be arriving in Manhattan around midnight then getting up at 3 to LEAVE for the airport at 4...which if you figure in the time change to California means 19 hours by the time dinner comes around on only 4 hours sleep for me. Trust me, when Lawrence asks for a restaurant close to the hotel - he's only trying to save anyone who meets us from a less than pleasant Pam experience. Add two hours drive time to that and my otherwise sparkling personality might be adversely affected by a lack of sleep and a long day.

Besides - I have to be well rested to go meet Shamu the next day smile.gif (this trip IS all about SeaWorld, after all - the purple car is just an aside)

Mike / Rusty,

Not that my place is 'on the way' or even clean, but if you need space, I have it. I have enough jackstands for one and a half 914s, which incidentally is the quantity of 914s in my possession.

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 29 2005, 12:27 AM

Hey Mike, after the airport, I'm wondering if the first stop can be a hotel, so we can drop Pam off. That way, she'll get an opportunity to relax and get a nap.

BTW, where is Old Town in relation to SD?

The big seafood pasta plate is awesome!  I even have a T-shirt.

What if the wife and I were to participate?  She's getting a job offer tomorrow.  I need a vacation.  Wanna put my toes in the ocean somewhere.

If you want to come out and tinker with the car with me... that's more than cool, brother.

Hopefully, we'll get the car situated on Saturday, so Sunday can be Sea World.

We're flying out on the 16th. Were you thinking about flying or driving?

P.S. Clay is busy tinkering in the classifieds, I think.

Probably be a fly trip. But if I drove, we could probably arrange to caravan back. That way I'd have tools. Hmmm.....

I need to see how Shar's job situation pans out. I can't commit right now, but it sounds like a great idea.

I plan on bringing tools. I'm going to mail them to the good Doctor, about a week before I fly out. Those flat-rate boxes at the Post Office are going to pay off. happy11.gif

So you wouldn't want another experienced 914 guy in a seperate car riding along with ya then?

Ok, here goes. Dr Evil and I both live in Normal Heights, about 2 blocks from each other. Normal Heights is between I-805 and I-15 (North/South) and I-8 (East/West) on the South side. Old Town is West on the I-8, about 4-5 miles, at the west end of Hotel Circle. Old Town in probably less that 2 miles from Sea World. Hotel Circle in Mission Valley is a very short drive to any of these place, Hotel Circle is on I-8, between I-5 and I-163. Old Town is at the intersection of I-8 and I-5. Sea World is just west of I-5 about 1 mile before you get to the I-5 and I-8 intersection.

Lawrence and Mike, Mike's seen my garage and tools, what ever you need to check the car out, you're wellcome too. Hell, if need be, we'll fire up the lathe and milling maching and make it. The only thing I'm lacking on is Garage space. Already rent the one next door as it is. Oh yeah, I've got a valve grinder and seat grinder too for cylinder heads, and just got a sand blaster cabinet. Yeah, I'm a tool and part junky and I like it, lol.

Hope this helps, let me know, Don

There are quite a few folks here that would like to buy you a drink. Guess we'll have to caravan to SD.

I wanna go to Don's house!

I'm reasonably certain we met at D&G last April Don. We talked at least when I was admiring your engine compartment.

Three places in Carlsbad, if you get up this far:

Fidel's Norte - great food and atmosphere, 1 block to the beach and a 2 mile meandering cliffside walkway. . . .

Have we come to a consensus yet as to where we're dining? Brian and I will be spending saturday either at the zoo or sea world, and meet up with everyone for dinner. I think I've even convinced my brother to come down from Long Beach to join us! w00t.gif

I am looking for a place that is Mexican, has lots of parking, and is big enough for a large group. I need a head count so I can get a better idea.
Right now the places of interest are Guadalajara in Old Town, Tio Leo's (there are several), or El Torrito's. I am open to suggestions as long as they fit the following criteria:
-Mexican food
-in San Diego (preferably close to the 8, 15, 805, 5 arterial area.
-big enough for 20 people?
-plenty of parking
-moderately priced

Thanks for your help. Sound off if your coming so I can compile a list!

Mike: looks like there will be 2 in my car.

Posted by: Cloudbuster Mar 30 2005, 04:40 PM

I'm in.

I vote for something in Old Town, although parking isn't the easiest there.

Tio Leo's sounds the most pratical.

El Torito? barf.gif

Various influences caused me to change plans. I'm heading off to Houston to visit relatives instead. I'll have to settle for Galveston for my beachside desires.

You guys have fun... beerchug.gif

Rusty, I'll be back Monday and off work Tuesday and Wednesday. Probably bolting trunk lids and doors onto the tub. smile.gif See ya then.

Posted by: skline Mar 30 2005, 06:37 PM

I'm in, yeah we can meet here and leave from here. We can also meet up with others down further south if anyone down there is going? What time did we want to go?? Thats a Saturday right?

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 30 2005, 06:39 PM

Ya'll do me a favor and post with the word "in" and the number of guests that you are bringing. This will help me delineate which place we will be going to.

Big thanks!
