Refitted the fuel injection to my 1.7 but cant get the car when stationary to rev over 3000 revs,didn't try to put it in gear and drive though
what can this be

Longshot, but do you have a rev limiting rotor in the dizzy?

It will have a spring on the top. If they get worn out or damaged, they can limit revs well below the original design (5800 ??)

How about a drop of 30 wt oil in the center of the dizzy shaft, to lube the advance weights? Should be done annually. If the weight stick, you have kinds of drivability issues, some like you describe.
