914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT: SBC Vortec heads

Posted by: r_towle Apr 4 2016, 09:10 AM

This is OT for 914s, but there are a lot of smart SBC guys here, and I know very little about them, so hoping you guys can shed some light on this for me.

Who knows about Vortec heads and intakes?

I have two SBC 350 motors from the 80,s
They are named Crusader 270 and they are marine motors for my boat.

I want to change the heads to Vortec heads and intake for carbs.

So, I am looking for early heads, cast iron.
Not looking for high horsepower new aluminum heads, it's a boat.
Boats are about torque, not horsepower.

So, specifically I am looking for which truck to get them from at the junkyard.
I will stick with carbs, just easier this time around to stay away from fuel injection.

Any helpful advise will be welcome.

The most popular Vortec heads are 062 and 906 .... last 3 digits of the OEM.

There are others, but .....,

I think the 906 heads are the crappy aluminum ones I was talking about in the Sandbox. You'd be looking for the 062 heads, which came on trucks from 96-00 apparently:

Cool,

Aluminum, salt water, stainless nuts and studs, it's a bad recipe.
Cast is all I need, anything will be a good improvement over the stock heads and intake....it's almost too easy to get some simple power, just need to kn what to shop for...the intake manifold will be th challenge.

these after market are made to use both intake styles so you can use the intakes you have. and this price is per pair!!!!
even less expensive here

906 heads are cast iron.

If you want the number of the aluminum heads with the tunnel intakes I will get it tomorrow.

if you go with the patriot heads you reuse everything, valve covers and intake saving you money from buying intake and valve covers.

the aluminum intake would not fair well in a marine environment / salt water.

promaxx have been review with very positive remarks for quality and finish. and should out perform gm vortec heads.

if i were you i would pick the promaxx

1996 thru 1999 Chevy or GMC 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton trucks and Suburbans with the 350 of course. I have owned a couple of them and the fellows who were next door to my old business ran them as plow trucks also. Great motor! These were considered the best heads for the SBC short of aftermarket heads. They, along with the revised fuel injection, boosted the HP from 185 for the 1995 model year to 250 for 1996 and later on the truck engines. They used to be available from Chevy new and complete for under $500 for the pair.
