Saw this on the bulletin board at the grocery store a while ago and couldn't ever get a hold of the guy. He put up another ad and I got in touch finaly. We had one when I was a kid and I always wanted to get one.
It will be my Coffee Shop company vehicle.
Engine runs ok but I am going to pull it and clean it up, new gaskets and hoses and such. It's nice that it is a D-jet. Sure is easy to get at this thing compared the 914.
Looks nice sean! I really like that type 3 . I want one for a daily driver. Intersted in selling??
Eric
i always wanted a notch back....
i like those...but i love the westy there is one at WKU...looks shitty....mine would loook nice!
Sweet!
You do know that a Type 4 drops right in the engine bay, right??

You just have to fab a mount to support the engine and tranny...
I am working on one to sell that will be universal, more and more TIIIs are getting TIV power.
My first car was a Fastback. I'm still looking for a nice '69 to have as a daily driver.
Check this shorty I saw on a street near MikeDs in LA:

The wife's daily driver is a '71 squareback...great for hauling the kiddies around.
Thinking about putting my old 914 1.8 L-jet in it next winter.
Jake beat me to it. Type IV power for the Type III is a good thing. Bus heat exchangers, etc...
that's a clean one . great cars i had a 72' i drove the wheels off. nice delete on the side chrome trim strips. pull the backseat bottom and kill any rust that might be hiding around the battery area, then go to costco and buy an optima.

a couple of years ago there was a huge spike in values for clean t-3s. i don't know if things are still the same. t-4 are all well and good, but there's nothing wrong with a good running 1.6 w/d-jet. if you start messing with the bosses "new" car and it winds up on jackstands, you'll be in the dog house.

might as well slap 4 fuch wheels on when your reskinning. that way you can ask, "what size a tire can i put on a t-3 with....", and post a wtb in the classifieds. i know that house sale equity is burning a hole in your pocket.

A little help: http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/type_4_conversion/
There's really not much to hanging the engine in a late model but it's not necessarily a "drop in". Carbs, at least for a BIG engine, will be somewhat restricted because you'll need to have short filters in order to keep the engine under the deck lid.
The stock 1.6L with FI (fuel injection) is quite reliable and easy. A Bentley shop manual would be a WISE tool to have. I highly recommend you subscribe to the www.vwtype3.org email list (it's free).

Welcome
toby, have you checked the drains in the fresh air box. when i first got mine the box would fill up and drain through the lower vents. came out like crazy when i turned left.

Jake, keep us posted on that engine mount bar. |
Not sure I understand the big attraction to putting a T4 into one of these. The T1-based engine is dirt cheap to rebuild, easy to get parts for, and for daily use 65hp with 26-28mpg is plenty adequate. It will cruise at 70mph all day long, which is about all I'd rate the chassis and brakes for. Mine never feels underpowered except when climbing a steep grade. Now, a hot engine in a 914 or 912, I can understand. Gotta have the beans to back up the looks and the handling.
there's light blue 72' fb down the street from my house. i drive by just to see how much more it has deteriorated. when we bought our house 7 years ago it was in the guy's driveway, nice and shiney. now it sits behind his house fading away. i've given up stoping to ask if he's ready to sell. he said it needed a brake caliper, 7 years ago, and he wanted to fix that first. now it's just a pos. too bad.

Well I've had the thing for 4 days and l already got the engine out. It was running ok but since it is going to be a driver I want to be able to know I can trust it. Pretty easy pull, can you tell me why the 914 has 4 bolts for the cvs and the squareback has 6. These were caked good.
I am going to stay with the type 3 for now, the case will not get split but I may put new p/c on given how inexpensive they are. We'll see what it looks like.
All this and I still have to pack for the move. WTF am I thinking
i must confess that i am a bit envious. it is a great looking car! feel free to post more pics of it any time you want!

Since I didn't have enough to do already I decided to pull the engine apart a bit and put new P/Cs and new heads, just stock stuff. The tin and shroud I just rattle canned, no time for powder coating this time.
I like how this engine looks
It's back in the car now, hook everything up and fire it up tomorrow.
Looks great! . Have fun with that square, I'm greeen with envy.
So just some new Jug's and pistions and a little rattle can?
Eric

You coming thru Seattle?
I had a 64 SB that I rebuilt to a 1775 w/ dual carbs and a 69SB stocker. The 64 had a gas heater so I was a great ski car! I would ski all day and come back to the frozen car in the parking lot and just hit the switch- instantly warm.
Get some beauty rings for those rims, yikes it look funky.
