hello everyone
looking for a little guidence before i take off my old exhaust. Bought this bursch one used and just want to ask a couple of questions before i get into wrenching. as per the photos it looks to me the bolts are part of the old exhaust and if that is so then presumably I need the bolts and nuts to put on the bursch??? Is there a recommended set of hardware that i need to purchase?

Jeez. They're just nuts and bolts. Stick with metric. M6.

New exhaust gaskets, nuts and bolts and lock washers from local hardware store, and that ought to do it. That Cherry bomb muffler is gonna be loud. use penetrant and let it soak night before. Wear safety glasses, rust and debris everywhere.

New exhaust gaskets, nuts and bolts and lock washers from local hardware store, and that ought to do it. That Cherry bomb muffler is gonna be loud. use penetrant and let it soak night before. Wear safety glasses, rust and debris everywhere.
cherry bomb? the guy i bought this from said it was a bursch exhaust???
penetrant, never heard of it - soak the whole thing in penetrant in a big plastic tub???

my apology, IIRC they had two versions, the one you have and another type, rectangular. the one I have is rectangular and to me is loud, but I am pretty sure the you have there will be louder because there won't be that much for the exhaust gas to be diverted through. record your current sound with your phone and then play it back after you got this one installed. spray PB Blaster or WD-40 on the rusty threads of the existing nuts and bolts. Hardest part of the job will be finagling the thing in place before you tighten up all of the bolts. I use Permatex gasket anti-seize, in case I want to change back the exhaust to something else.

not too sure i will be into this new exhaust didn't want a louder one just a nice exhaust note and brusch was recommended to me a while ago. anyways i will rock this one out and if i don't like i then will sort it out later of put the old one back on..
IYHO what exhaust would you recommend for my 73, I am looking for something that sounds great not too loud, but then again if it is a little loud maybe that is a good thing, my car is not a DD and at some point i do want to build in a bit of performance...

I have a 2.0 liter and this is what I have on it now. but it is spendy. But it does give a nice deep throaty sound. In sequence of highest decibels, the Bursch you have is probably the loudest, then the rectangular bursch, then this Dansk gives the sound that is quieter and closest to OEM and give you the sound you seek. I'm speaking from experience from owning a 1.8 with a OEM exhaust 20 years ago and a 6 cylinder tail dragger.

Here are pics of the 2 types of Bursch mufflers. I have the one that looks like a regular muffler. Yours looks like the one that resembles the old "glass pack" muffler that guys used to put on their muscle cars. It's a straight through muffler with less back pressure and louder than the regular muffler.
I had one of those on my 1.7L and swapped it for a stock muffler because it was too loud.

Good I was not able to continue buying that exhaust. I immediately realize It is almost same glass pack I used and it is loud for a quiet neighborhood. I went to leisritz but the sound is like a vw bus for me. Thinking of a different exhaust, if i have enough funds i will be buying banana muffler. But don't get me wrong, that exhaust is still okay if you like louder sound.

That is the OEM one I had on my 1.8 Ljet 20 years ago. I am afraid it does have the bus sound, after all, it had a VW part number. But it will not be as loud as the straight Bursch.

The piping is what really counts. The 4-2-1 is the ticket. You can mount the muffler of your choise after the collector. Flowmaster, edelbrook, etc. you need to make sure the muffler clears the heat shield.

The Bursch 4->1 collector exhaust pipe set is a keeper. The glasspack/cherrybomb type muffler not so much. You'll want a decent muffler shop to weld together a new muffler solution to bolt to the Bursch, like a small Flowmaster or similar "muffler" to reduce the sound. That flange and 180 deg bend tubing on the glasspack may be something they can work with.

The Bursch system you have, with the three bolt flanged connection for the muffler, allowed you to change the muffler type: either a cherry-bomb style, quiet turbo style, or a straight through stinger pipe. I have this Bursch combination with the bolt on quiet turbo muffler. A lot of people don't like the Bursch systems, but a lot of people have used them. I used mine for years and found it to be acceptable. Most of the Bursch 914 systems you see are welded one piece systems with the quiet turbo muffler, which cost less than the bolted flanged systems.
Bursch used to sell these combinations. Their web site doesn't show them currently, but you could probably call them and ask if they could provide a bolt on turbo muffler for your collector if you find the cherry-bomb type muffler to be too loud.

so your saying it is not as loud as everyone is predicting. just stoped of and picked up the hardware to bolt it on (this weekend if i have a chance) then we shall see or better yet hear...

As for he bolts and nuts just break the bolts with a socket and wrench. You're going to want new fasteners anyway. Make sure you order the correct he to muffler gaskets. The 1.7/1.8 differ from the 2.0.

Just wait...
Sure, you can putt around town and keep it quiet, but when you wind up the motor doing some spirited driving, your housemate will know when you have made it to the grocery store, they will hear you move to the liquor store, and they will know when you are coming home....
It's that loud.
5 miles loud.

ok everyone
put the LOUD pipe on this past weekend. here are my thoughts.
it does not sound as loud as i was led to believe. maybe i pysched myself out so much that by the time i turned the key i was a let down. I does have much more throaty/deep sound that i am looking for, however it is not that crisp sounding. also i can tell that the pitch after say and hour or two will be a bit hard on the ears. maybe that is what you all are referring to.
but I am going to rock this one out fore a bit. like one of you said as long as i have the four into one collector i can always mod the muffler.
unfortunately the end pipe (the part with the chrome that is after the muffler) does not line up with the valence that i have so i have to goto a muffler shop purchase the correct gauge metal tube, cut the end off and insert the spacer and then line it all up to correspond to the cut out that is on the valence. pain in the arse.. 
it is always something isn't it....

Here are two threads concerning Bursch Muffler mods. If you are going to pay the muffler shop to reposition the tail pipe you could probably replace the muffler for about the same installation cost plus the cost of the muffler you choose.
