I got the PS2 game console last night. Pretty fun. It came with GT3. The Porsche cars in the game are called "RUF's".
I guess licensing issues?
I would like to hear which driving games you like and would recommend.
Thanks,
KT
Gran Turismo 4! Get a force feedback wheel for it.
NFS underground and HP2 are good... but for realism, it's gran turismo series(still partial to "2") or nothing at all
RUF is an aftermarket company for PORSCHE... like callaway for corvette, or rousch for mustang... cosmetic differences and some slight engine mod differences...
porsche and ferrarri will not liscence the GT games for some reason... not realistic enough maybe?!
Gran Turismo 4
I got it, I am addicted to it. It is awesome! It is definitely keeping me from finishing my car.

get need for speed underground 2. awesome game! but i haven't played GT4 yet. neither of them have a 914 to pick tho!
Will playing the games help learn the real tracks?
GT4 tracks are pretty much exact copies.
In GT4 you can run at Infinion and Laguna Seca. You definitely learn the turns and the lines but I imagine that the benefits when you actually get on the track in a DE situation are marginal.

I've head that with a force feedback wheel a car in the game is very close in lap times to the car in real life (like a couple tenths maybe). I think Sam Miati (sp) from Road&Track did a test on it. Cool stuff. I might have to get a PS2 for just this game...set up a spare 914 seat in my basement and get the wheel.
the local Fry's store has GT4 running on a 52" HD projection TV with racing chairs that are basically honda race seats, with the new logitech feedback wheel and pedals on a sweet setup... it's engineered correctly, and feels just like a car(you even release and slide the seats around like a real car... it's an awesome setup... definitely the way the game was meant to be played....
I know we're talking PS2, but I really dig the driving series games on Xbox... I think it's project gotham... it's a lot of fun, you get points for cool slides and stuff...

I know you aren't bustin' my balls on purpose... fact is: you have more info on it than I do... I've always heard of RUF as I described.. like a modifier of PORSCHE, not a start from scratch manufacturer... I know they manu. many of their own parts... I was not aware they were seen as a full-fledged manufacturer... my bad
i think it's just in the last year - possibly two - that they got their manufacturer's certification...
so what you said of the did in fact used to be true, but it has fairly recently changed...
Here are some awesome Ruf factory pics:

I just bought GT4 after I played it in the store and managed to wreck my car in turn two and eleven at SEARS pretty badly.
Rather do that on TV than in my '14.

Need For Speed - Porsche Unleashed
You can race everything from a 550, 914 (four cyl only), to a 996 turbo, 959, and all the GT cars of three years ago.
After you get tired of driving, try Acecombat 4, SSX3 (snowboarding), and HotShots3 or 4 which is one of the best golf video games ever.
PS2=lots of fun, carpel tunnel, occasional po'd spouse

I used the user-defined cars on the PC version... can you use them on the PS1 version of PU?
This is hilarious. My 17 year old nephew is out from Minnesota this week and we picked up a PS2 and GT4. I was driving the 2000 Ruf 996 and he was in a BMW M5 and he smugly said I have a better car so I'll wait up for you. I was ahead of him by the first corner and he never caught me again! LOL
Pretty realistic stuff. Infineon feels almost like the real thing to me however joystick driving just doesnt do it for me. Whats the best wheel etc to use with GT4?

Force-feedback steering wheels?
Amatuers.

oh and the Logitech GT = $150.00
900degrees of wheel turn.
designed for GT4, it was originally proposed by Polyphony (Grand Turismo Developers) but wasn't ready/feasable for the release of GT3. Instead Polyphony and Logitech worked to develop the wheel for the release of GT4. Well worth the price. Drove it at Fry's and the feedback was incredible.
I bought my ps2 SO I could play GT4. I also "stole" my friend's ps1 so I could play GT2. the LAN function is quite fun.

I got the Logitech Forced feedback last night.
It makes GT4 a completely different game!!
I have to make a table for it though, as it is pretty heavy, with good steering resistance. Tried it on a Heavy, wood, Folding TV Tray and could turn the table before the wheel would turn do to the resistance. A 351 flywheel strapped to the table helped it last night. After the event at Scott's today I am going to look at building a table that is wider, so it will be a little more stable.
RUF has been an actual manufacturer for some time. They have their own TUV certifications and their cars carry RUF VIN numbers, not Porsche ones. The cars obviously start off as skeletal Porsches but I guess RUF does a ton of the final assembly as well as extensive modifications. You can also 'convert' Porsche manufactured cars to RUF mod'ed versions so the whole thing is pretty fuzzy. I just don't understand why Porsche is so anal about licensing to game producers.
I just picked up GT4 at Costco today (as if I really have time to play it). I can't drive any PS2 games worth beans using the effin' stock controller...so will be picking up a steering wheel setup before too long. Unfortunately my handheld wheel controller as well as my full size setup from the PS1 aren't compatible/upgradeable to PS2 specs.
With the joyschtick- I change the default control to suit my style I've been used to.
i set the throttle to R2 and the brake to L2.
Upshift to the "square" and downshift to the "x".
It's easier on the tendons.
KT
trekkor, you're right, reassigning the controls does help quite a bit -- wife's out of town so I stayed up till after 1 (er 2) drivin' This game rocks!
I still steer like a drunk driver with the damn joystick, though
I like those changes because you can tap brakes while you're still on full throttle.

Here's a low cost alternative to the new Logitech $150 steering wheel mentioned.
Target has a wheel with shifter and pedals for $49.99.
I bought one today. Fully programmable.
Easy to use. I'll buy another for player 2.

I'm going back to Laguna...

Porsche's are not in any of the Grand Tourismo series of games. The reason I was told was that Electronic Arts bought the exclusive rights to use the cars in their games. The makers of Grand Tourismo scored a little bit of a coup by getting the RUF cars in their games though.
Definately the best driving game that I have tried so far.
i'm addicted to the arcade game initial-D ver. 2. driving games are way more fun in the arcade with forced feed back and stick shift and all that good stuff.
Colin McRae Rally is a blast!
FYI:
I'm working on my International B license.
This game is great.
