the shirt orders are closing tomorrow morning for the order to go in.. hurry up
We will be able to spend one day in Telluride, another in Ouray/Silverton
if you haven't been to Telluride before, you are in for a real treat
probably the prettiest place in the state
There will be an optional hike or two, so bring your shoes if your so inclined
There will be all of the usual activities and some great drives!
not to mention the normal parking lot activities, and amazing people to hang out with
so mark your calendars
get your hotel reservations
and I can't wait to see folks !
Schedule
The Brown Dog Pizza place (Telluride lunch) doesn't take reservations, though. They said to call the day before with quantity and they'd do their best to get us set up together. That restaurant has a good menu and is not super expensive so we can always split up to different locations if it doesn't work out. I'm not sure where we'll park in Telluride, though. Maybe at the blues festival park?
Thursday Dinner: Start walking into town around 6:30pm, either to Tacos del Gnar, Eatery 66 or 520 Burgers, stop at Cafe Ridgway a La Mode for dessert on the way back to the party lot or head right back to a dessert tequila or fireball.
Friday drive to Silverton
Friday Lunch: In Silverton, location Bent Elbow, 1114 Notorious Blair St
Friday Dinner: 7pm Pizza in the parking lot (mmmm)
Saturday drive to Telluride
Saturday Lunch: In Telluride, location Brown Dog Pizza, 1115 Colorado Ave
Saturday Dinner: 7pm True Grit Cafe

Hot springs in Ouray, beer or two in Silverton after a drive over Red Mountain Pass, cruisin' over the Dallas Divide to Telluride, Mexican food at the Adobe Inn in Ridgway. All less than 100 miles from home and pretty much our test drive route after getting the -6 back together last summer.
Have a conflict right now but pretty damn sure it'll be worked out. Was forced to cancel Flagstaff but not this one. Right now planning a Mother's Day soak in Ouray Sunday to check it out.

I passed him on the way up from Durango back to Ouray. Even at low altitudes, a kinked fuel line will cause lack of power ...

For me it would be 984 miles or 14 hours.
If it means I get to go through or stay in Beaver Utah it might be worth it.
Beaver Utah hmm sounds like,, well anything to see?
thats 1160 miles and 18 hr drive for me and thats missing the Beaver you spoke of. That would be a great drive to brake in my car, Im thinking.
The town of Fillmore isn't too far away. There used to be a couple of road signes that said Fillmore/Beaver.... don't know if they're still there.
Everyone knows Beaver UT is a great place to stay. They have Beaver Taco, Beaver Liquor, etc.

We appear to have found one! Not much of a looker at the moment, but it has good bones. Signal Orange is the original color (72 1.7). Not driveable at the moment, but I should make it to RRC!

There must be something going on in Moab that weekend.
I was looking at hotels for Sunday night, most are sold out and the Motel 6 was $160.
Guess I will be staying in Green River on my trip back home.

You've got the Moab Music Festival and the Rocky Mountain Adventure Riders motorcycle club all on that weekend. Green River is your best bet unless you're feelin' spry and truck on to Richfield. Less cash and right on I-70...

Ernie,
I think on Friday the drive is to Ouray
there should be some scenic routes added, and options for people that want to do the hot springs, free time.. etc
I don't know the Friday lunch stop yet but its in process of getting finalized.

Lots of work being done to Dad's (dare I say 'my?') grey car..
Engine is being pulled out, new gaskets going in. 007 Smoke screen kit is finally being uninstalled.
New clutch and gas cable, brakes, etc.. His brother is covering the cost of all the work, Dad has most of the parts.

it gave him problems with vapor locking every year
and he would say he was going to relocate it every year... but then never had the time.
a good chance it will vapor lock and give you problems also.

Yeah, I was thinking about that but it's a little above and beyond for the scope of the work right now. When I get out of PHX it will be less of an issue but the 6 hour drive here from So Cal might have unintended musical and smoking breaks.

Since I'm pretty new to 914 issues, what needs to be in a basic "road trip" toolkit for these?
Common wrench sizes?
Common sockets and extensions?
Anything specialty?

If you have the following combination and socket sizes, you have 99% of what you'll need to deal with anything:
10 mm
13 mm
17 mm
Like Toast said, you probably already have everything in the car.

Caravan from SLC leaving before noon on Thursday. In fact, if we could leave around 9:00AM, we could have lunch at Ray's in Green River, Utah
Interesting option: Taking the back way in.
Mapquest: SLC>Redvale, CO>Ridgway, CO or, Just Moab, UT>Ridgway, CO - It's hard to believe that route would be anything but spectacular. Fuel up in Moab. I did a Google Earth flyby and it looked stunning.

You know I bumped into Russ earlier today out and about Rio Rancho, and he mentioned your engine build had a few ... oddities. One rather serious one about how the oil was routed.
Sorry man, I sure hope it gets all fixed up OK. I say, put a six in that car! But as for borrowing mine ... yeah. Hehehe! That's a good one!
My dog did pass away yesterday which I wasn't sure about that happening before or after RRC, hence the main reason for my absence, but someday ... maybe ... it will be in the cards for me to make a Rt66 or RRC. Yep, Liz did indeed provide the lettering, she had one of those kinds of paint-pens in her purse. Something about working at a restaurant/brewery at the time. That exploding fire pit was almost as epic as Ron's stumble!

Sharon,
Do we have a room or tables set aside for lunch on Friday in Silverton?
If not, we might want to be sure we are in Silverton before 11:30 (it shouldn't be a problem as it is a short drive from Ridgway). The first train from Durango arrives at 11:30 (second one arrives at 12:15) and things fill up fast.
PS: There will be just one extra Durango guest for lunch on Friday plus me.

Hey Mike! We have a reservation at the lunch location but I need to confirm the attendance which is why I'm harassing folks to let us know when they'll be attending.

Can't do the whole weekend. Too much backed up at home after 5,000 miles and seven states exercising the -6 in August. Have a conflict Saturday but will come up early Friday for the day drive and evening festivities and head back to Grand Junction late that day. Look forward to meeting everyone.

Hummm...... A 914 that leaks oil.
What a shock.
Mine leaked oil for as long as i've known it. About 13 years now.
Anyone remember the oil slicks from RRC Moab where I ended up buying a case of oil to keep in the front trunk?
But seriously Justin, 914's just leak oil. If its a real concern, have one of the local 914 peeps come by to check it out if they are allowed. Glenn is nearby.
And dont worry if it is last minute before you can make it. That is when some of us finally straggle in.
RFoulds posts:
At a drive through Palm Springs he showed up at the hotel with smoke pouring out behind her m. I asked if he wanted some help finding the oil leaks and he said, "why? They aren't hurting anything!"

This one will NOT be ready since I have been taking it apart for the last few days ..... But I do have a spare car.
Please excuse the Porsche D90 wheels. They are on loan when it goes to the paint shop., so the Fuchs don't get over spray on them. I had to put the 8" up front (with spacers) and the 6" on the rear (with spacers) because the modern offset/backspacing is so different. But they were free and just sitting outside my friends house.

So last week went on a shakedown drive with the Porsche club and my brakes went out. Was oncall last week so no time for me to get the parts in and fix it myself. Thankfully we have a local guy that knows a bit about 914 brakes, no problem, towed to Erics, they dealt with it while i worked, first time in 15 years I have let anyone else wrench on one of my cars. Sorting out a couple minor issues that came up yesterday, dealing with this.

And now this morning the D-jet is acting up and its not starting. Was running perfect yesterday and ever since i built this car! My persistence in making this trip is being tested. I haven't had time to test things yet but i suspect I lost the MPS. Have to attend my day job today and until Wednesday. Running out of energy, at this point my attendance is up in the air.

Debating what will be faster, diagnosing the Djet and finding the parts to fix it, or pulling the Megasquirt setup off of my autocross car. Leaning towards fixing the D-jet short term but looks like another be doing another MS build in the near future.

Got the d-jet working again. My MPS had decided it no longer wanted to hold vacuum. also found the harness side connector for my head temp sensor was just about broken off. Fixed both issues but my spare MPS is less than perfect (slight leak). going to see if I can borrow one from another local guy so I have a spare for the trip.

Justin,
I never met your dad, from what I have read, I missed out on knowing a really great guy. Look forward to meeting you.
Everyone have a safe trip!
We had a very nice drive getting to Ridgway. The town has a nice head shop, and a good supply in the smoke shops.
Time to relax.

Same here!
Everyone should stop at LivWell and use my rewards card #

Hope you get it up and running would be great to see you caravan with us to Ridgeway. Good Luck
Thanks, Fighting this one till the end and I still hope to make it. I probably wont finish everything I wanted to get done but did manage to address the problems that came up.
I think we have Bronze bushings here...
I had a set of bronze ones on my shelf, back in the car and good to go.
Scott had a spare unmolested 049 MPS from his no longer used 1.7 that I am borrowing for the weekend. I my only 1.7 spare was an 041 that looks to have been rebuilt, works but is noticeably lean under light throttle, the 049 is nice and smooth so ill drive on that one and bring the 041 as my backup given both of them seem to have very minor leaks.
As it stands right now im looking good to go.

Sharon,
I noticed the lunch time on Friday at Bent Elbow was 12:30. If you leave Ridgway at 10:00am it is a one hour drive (34 miles) to Silverton. That puts you there at 11:00am.
Is lunch at 12:30 firm? The reason I am asking is to coordinate my departure with Jim from Durango.
Thanks!

210
From Pelican:
180-210 is the proper range; 130 is too cool to dissipate water etc in the oil. 220-230 every now and then is fine; 250 isn't. Engine life drops quickly when oil temps consistently exceed 210.
Posted by: Ferg Sep 8 2016, 02:14 PM
I agree that 210 is optimal, but being a 2.7 I'm betting you will see 230 on the highway.
If it climbs up to 250 on sustained grades and then drops back into the 220-30 area that is what I would call normal for a 2.7 with no external cooler.

SLITS car would occasionally get up to 2:50 if Running In the Heat of the day and on grades. It would usually drop down. But sometimes we would pull over and let it cool down for a bit.

Made it home in one piece! Well mostly one piece, the nut for my lower alternator bolt is somewhere between Ridgeway and Montrose and i cooked 4 alternator belts on the drive back because of it. VERY lucky the first belt started squealing while in Montrose and not the 200 miles of nothing that followed. Also very lucky that Jerry happened to pass by the same way and caravaned with me all the way back to my house. Thanks a TON Jerry! could have been a real bad day had you not been there.

I even got just a warning from the Highway Patrol for being an little rambunctious with the throttle! A very pleasant guy overall so no worries! Made it home with no further incidents.

Sounds like things were a bit more uptight than escalante. Management there was more than casual. What was the story behind the parking lot? Who was 'that person' this year?
Posted by: Toast Sep 13 2016, 01:41 PM
Actually the management there said that "we were not a problem."
Justin Meier won That Guy award....now renamed as The SLITS Award.

We actually got kicked INSIDE this year. It was the damnedest thing.
Posted by: StratPlayer Sep 13 2016, 03:23 PM
Yep, they charged me 150.00 for smoking in the room.... What sucks is that I didn't smoke in my room what so ever. I bought some herb from the head shop across the street, set it the table in my room and went outside to party. When I came back to the room it stunk of skunk, I put the herb in the fridge.
So they smelled herb in my room and charged me 150 and accused me of smoking in my room..... its just another way for them to extort money from people.
It turned out to be an very expensive week end for me.

The time spent was invaluable to me. You will never know how much it meant that you cared so much. I'm sorry that it couldn't have been forever and one day.
Think happy thoughts until I can be with you again.
