914World.com _ 914World Garage _ A "DTM" cooled type IV...

I didn't even know they existed (except for the 911 style, or Corvair type). Looks kind of type I to me.

Yup
I remember the "FAT" boys. Back in my day they where a huge push in the T4 performance world. Did some fan conversions and stuff, this one did look like a type1 motor,
I've seen these uprite fans (like in the pic) on the 912 and 956 replicas. Looks real nice in these cars for those who chose the T4 powerplant.
I prefer the 911 style for a 914, but for a 956rep biult on a bug pan with a 140hp T4, this looks more apropriate.
Good read, he looks like he knows what he is talking about, I bet you he is a member.
Regards
Joe

That's right, they're no "back in the day" company. They've been doing it since back then, it's true (for some reason I remember were somehow related or descended from the original EMPI or the Inch Pincher, or something) and they're still going strong. Good parts, good work, and good people, just don't advertise much.

All of the FAT line of products will be on my website in the next few weeks.
You will be able to buy their parts online now.

Thats not a DTM...

Far from it.

I tested that shroud in my comprehensive tests two years ago.....

That shroud has ZERO internal vanes, and zero deflectors to direct the air. It also places the fan in the center which causes a huge tangent of air to be directed to cylinders 1&2 and causes a greater diffferential of temp between 3&4

It was the absolute worst system I tested by leaps and bounds, it did not come from FAT..

FAT is a good bunch of guys I talk to Greg on a weekly basis as well. They primarly work with offroad stuff now.

I will explain it better,
I built my motor pre-www. About 13 years ago, and most of the research the year before that. Since my motor has been vertually untouched for ten years I am way behind on the T4 motor guys out there, still out there.
Imagine, a dumb ass like me, knew all about Fat 10 years ago, and imagine what they can do today.
I needed to clearify

Joe

Sorry Jake! Didn't know what else to call it.

Your "DTM" set-up was the only Type I 'ish looking cooling system I was aware of for the Type IV motor.

I seem to remember the "FAT" guys (Fleming-Aranson-Thurber?) as coming onto the drag racing scene (with the "Tar Babe") after guys like Darrell Vitone ("Inch Pincher"), Dean Lowry ("Deano's Dyno Soar") and Paul Schley (Schley Bros.' "Lightning Bug") who all seemed to flourish in the 60's; FAT was more like the "second wave" ("Cal-look" cars), probably in the early 70's (with the Berg's probably straddling both decades). Once FAT got into the "off-roading" scene, their fame and reputation spread. And didn't current Top Fuel racer, Cory McClenathan, also get his start in racing as one of that later group of VW drag racers?

Please don't tell me it has the "slip-in" 1.7L 96mm cylinders. IF so.... Yikes. They're paper thin.

Now, if they opened the 1.7L head registers up and used the 1.8L 96mm cylinders, that's OK.

Later,
Tom

Ah Yep, yep and yep.

Top Fuel racer Cory McClenathan made his start in bug drag racing...still have the VW mags about him here somewhere.

Sometimes you don't need Google...especially when your mis-spent youth was played out among the drag strips of the West Coast during that era; I still don't know how I managed to find enough time to attend college and get a degree!

...and don't forget the alkyhol injected type 1 turbo of the late Bob McClure of BAE Turbosystems. He drove it sub 10's at the OC dragstrip BugIns pray.gif . FAT was also one of the first to offer 914 (4) to (5) lug wheel conversions.

I remember seeing an article in a mag years ago...they used a Fuchs wheel with drill guide bushings and a drill press to make those smash.gif
