I'm installing a new hard drive and I want to strap on some protection before I switch it over and go on the net.

Microsoft has a new anti virus that is free. also, do NOT use Internet Explorer. use Mozilla, or FireFox.

some people i know like AVG antivirus. Its good and FREE to download, just register, and it doesn't have a huge memory profile like Norton.
check out this guys links page, he also has some good tips for securing XP if you are interesed.

OK. Here is my formula that has worked extremely well for a year solid with almost zero failures and zero viry/trojan issues on 11 machines at work.
Anti Virus and e-mail checker: NOD32 (www.eset.com)
Spyware: Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)
Ad Aware: Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
I use all three religously. NOD32 is the only cost. The other 2 are free.
You can download NOD32 for a free trial version. It rules..!!!!!
Take the time to learn how to set up all three of these programs. It is the setup (combo of rules) that is important. How you lay out your rule sets is what really makes this combo work. If ya get stuck. Send me a mail and I will call ya and walk you through it.
Oh yeah. Set all three up to auto update EVERY DAY..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NEVER use I.E. for your browser. I use and our staff uses Firefox exclusively.
Thats my two cents worth. There is a zillion differant combos that work This works for us extremely well.
And just for fun. if ya want to get to all of your programs bits and pieces, AND see all of your serial numbers for all of your programs, like windows or office. Download a proggy called Belark Advisor. You will be able to find things that are shall we say... Interesting?
It is a simple utility to see what programs you really have on your computer. It can be helpful at times. (www.belarc.com/free_download.html )
If any of this doesn't work. Blame it on Aaron... We do..!!!!!!!

AVG is the best for the money. www.grisoft.com
Microsoft's software is "spyware" software, not anti-virus. Besides, MS products are WHY we need AV in the first place right?

I use AVG on all of my PCs and all the ones I build... it it a VERY good AV(much better than Norton or McAffee), it's free, and gets good, regular updates...
also, if you are on a broadband connection, get a software firewall, like sygate(also free), it will help as much as an AV... I keep sygate and AVG running all the time, and run adaware and spybot(both also free, but work great together) every 2 weeks

I'm having another problem though now as well. I have the OS (win2k) and a bunch of other software loaded. Everything seems to be working fine on the new drive except the modem is not being detected. I actually have the two drives set up in slave/master form and just unplug the old and the new drive boots up on restart. It's a fujistu dsl modem and no software came with it. On the old drive it was detected and installed no prob. Now...nada. I can't figure out how to get the new HD to detect the modem.
Oh and I've been using the on board ethernet connection (m7vig pro mboard)
Any thoughts?

I installed windows 2k when I built my computer 4 years ago and ran for 2 years virus free. One day on the UCI network I got raped like an alterboy and I switched over to XP with norton antivirus, firewall, and use opera and firefox and havent looked back. But like Clayton said, there are a billion different combinations that work fine. This works for me.
I also use Ad-aware 6 (available at www.download.com ) to clean up the stuff norton missed.

Along those lines, anybody know of a software firewall that will run on W98?I've got an old laptop that can't really be upgraded that my wife needs to use until she starts her new job.

You've got to pay for it, but Trend Micro makes an anti-virus suite that I really like. It's called PC-Cillin. You can find it at www.antivirus.com (along with a great online virus scan that is free) or at vendors like www.newegg.com and others. I use Trend's products on my servers and workstations at work and have been very satisfied with their effectiveness and the timliness of their updates, especially compared to McAfee. When I needed to get something for my laptop, this is the one I bought. It's about $49. The downloadable is less expensive than the full package that includes the CD.

PC-cillin let me down big time about 6 months ago. That may just be me though.
Still, I will not use it again.
spyware I use Webroot Spysweeper and Ad-aware and have not found the need for anything else.

What I recommend for my friend (he had MSN and got viruses all the time. And spyware. And hijackers...etc)
--Scan with housecall.trendmicro.com (free webbased virus scanner, decent job, free and updated regularly)
--Scan with Adaware
--Scan with Hijackthis (also can email me the scan txt so I can verify if there's anything fishy)
I use a number of creative ways to get rid of problems, but if it's a virus, I tend to download:
V3 from Ahnlab, it's a korean antivirus prog. DOS based and seems to to a really good job of getting rid hard to kill virus.

Also use:
Servicefilter (scans services and lists them)
Regedit, I kill lots of things with it.

Ok, I got the HD on the net. I had to download and install Earthlinks WinPoet. Bad news is that this "lsass.exe" keeps shutting down the computer. I did set up NOD32 and it seems to work, except for this thing. It detected numerous trojan exe's that I shut down. But this other thing is causing me some heartburn.
Why is this so difficult???

Boot the computer in safe mode with networking. Then do a full virus scan, and a full spyware scan. That lsass.exe is normally part of the authentication process, but a google search also shows a few worms replacing it with their crap. Make sure you are fully updated on your antivirus and spyware programs.

I support Mcafee commercially among other things, and I agree with the above statement.

sygate works on 98 too... it also has VERY low overhead

I just started using PC-cilin from Trend Micro. I got the wrong version to start with and my serial never worked, but then downloaded the latest version and my serial worked fine.
It has some spyware/adware functionality, as well as a firewall and a virus checker. I also use AdAware for spadware.
I like it a lot better than the macaffeeeee and the norton stuff, although the interface is slightly less polished looking.
