One thing that I don't like about the stock seats is that they make me feel like I am setting on top of a rounded pillow and am about to fall off
So was wondering what is being used out there as replacements? Am not interested in racing seats. Anyone installed seat out of a Miata or Fiero? Thoughts?
tom...
I had a Mazda Miata for a short while, I removed the seats whilke detailing the car. Theye would work great.
I woul also check out what GTS has to offer http://www.gts-classics.com/

The seat cushion on the bottom of the stock seat pulls out very easily, and can be reshaped pretty simply. The stock seats still have basically no side support, though.
I found early Miata (like the first 2-3 years) seats to be fairly uncomfortable, but seats from later cars were a good bit better. One problem with fitting most seats is the handbrake on the 914 tends to foul the seat. You can have the stock seat pan reupholstered, including better side support. This results in a seat that fits properly, and is a good bit lighter than most seats in other cars, or most aftermarket seats.
Toyota MR2 seats *kinda* fit. They work ok for me, taller people not so good. Probably depends on what year too. MUCH more comfortable tho. I have some more experimentation to come (with seats from other cars), I will post details as I go.
75.5-on 911 seats (non electric). I made mine fit from a 911SC. Perfect for cruising, not for racing. I keep the 914 seats handy just for that.
You'll have to make a frame (or ask someone to make a frame) to adapt them. I went the plate-steel, drill press and MIG welder route. As stated the side does foul a little bit from the pbrake handle, but I'm working on a way to avoid that. The left side of the seat is becoming scraped up but they need to be reupholstered anyhow. However, I'm going to try moving the driver's seat to the right a bit more so it's lined up better with the steering wheel. In a 911 you sit right on center with the steering wheel. In a 914 you're a few inches to the left (or right if a RHD car). I want to correct that. Probably with some minor cutting of my center console.
Wouldn't 911 seats must make you sit up quite a bit higher? Not good if you are tall.
I was eye-balling the seats in an S2000. They look pretty awesome. They also look thin enough to fit in a 914.
I'd hit a pick and pull with a tape measure. I would think seats from a del sol or CRX might be close. You need a pretty small seat, low and thin. What other small type car??
I spoke to the owner of a 914 at the German Autofest who had mounted 911 seats in his car. He removed the crossbrace piece that runs form side to side under the stock seats.
Here are some ST seats from GTS.

What about you guys that bought those Pep Boys seats? Any new info on fit up? Pic's?
Andy
I was wondering that too...
Now that I have a spare set of seats and rails, I may attempt something with them...just to see.
Made this out of a stock seat. Took a couple of nights to make the blosters and sew up the covers. Now I need to do the other one.

Right now? In my garage... or at least in the collection?
1941 Oldsmobile Model 78 Sedan
1967 VW Squareback - awaiting a 2.2L Type4 conversion
1972 Porsche 914 2.6... well, until I broke the crankshaft.
1973 VW THING (all original & very orange)
1998 VW New Beetle (winter beater)
Oh, and lots of parts for just about all of the above.
..and a refrigerator full of beer...
