914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Nord memorial run up to Artist Point

Posted by: aircooledtechguy Jul 7 2016, 02:06 PM

I miss my friend Nord. He left us way too early. sad.gif He introduced me to this amazing road and loved to drive it. So,. . .

I'm hosting a Nord memorial run up to Artist Point on Mt Baker on Saturday, August 13th. I know Nord's thing was to do a breakfast GTG and drive up in the morning, but traffic always is horrible on the mountain in the morning. So I'm purposing an evening run with a pre-run BBQ at my shop in Anacortes. So here's the plan. . .

4pm - Meet @ my shop which is about 10 miles west of I-5, exit 230 (12796 Quantum Lane #14, Anacortes, WA 98221) where I'll host a BBQ consisting of some sort of flesh, chips, sodas and such.

5:30 - We depart and cruise up Chuckanut drive and onto the Mt. Baker hwy for a mildly spirited drive up to Artist Point. By the time the road gets good, most folks on the mountain should be heading down for dinner in the opposite direction. By the time we get to the top, there should be minimal people up there and should have a clean run back down.

Folks from down south (Kevin) should miss all the traffic so you all are out of excuses!! biggrin.gif It would be nice to have a rough idea of who plans on attending so I have enough food.

Yes! I have a new machine that levitates a 914. Lift off in puyallup and set down at deception pass state park in the cranberry lake parking lot. Bypassing the non-existent weekend traffic thru Seattle.

I knew all that "traffic talk" was just a rouse. Glad you got it figured out Kevin!

That levatator is not operated by Hans solo. wink.gif

Nate; I've been thinking the same thing this week. time to plan a Nord run. I have talked with some people in the chuckanut club and they are interested in being there as well. (this was Nord's club). the 6/7th doesn't work for most people, nor does the 27/28. I think a skagit co meet up would work great. go up hwy9 to 542. bellingham people could meet up at deming. lets figure it out.

The event is planned for August 13th as that is the day my calendar allows. I'm open to routes to the getting to the Baker hwy and meeting up in Skagit. It was traditional to have as many folks as possible from CSSC join in the annual Nord runs and it's open to them as well. I had actually planned on contacting them too, so maybe you could handle that since you're a member?? (pretty please)

It would be awesome to have a whole bunch of cars turn out in Nord's honor and keep this fun annual run going. beerchug.gif

One of the biggest reasons why I chose to get another 914 was the frequent conversations I had with Nord.....he was my biggest influence on my purchase back into the 914 fold.
I'm in if I can get my nagging clutch issue resolved or I'll just drive my Volvo 240 wagon....but that wouldn't be much fun. Please don't laugh at me if I do Nord!

OK Nate; consider the CSSC notified. BBQ at 4. leave anacortes 5:30. I am thinking we might see 6-8 cars from this group. need to set up a meeting up on the mt baker hwy for bellingham people who don't want to drive to anacortes. I'm thinking the deming casino at 6:15? what say you?

Awesome! But the big question is will this machine be lifting a silver 914 located in a garage in puyallup that has been resting on jack stands for years to this event?

When we made the Wednesday runs up the mountain we would meet at the Nooksack Casino. I'm assuming this is what is now referred to as the Deming Casino now.

for those coming from south of Everett, how about we meet at JSaum's i5 exit? the internet says 1 hour to Nate's shop from there. Plenty of gas stations to choose from. How about we plan to leave from the Chevron (214 128th St SW, Everett WA) at 3p?

I'm open to other ideas. If anyone is coming from east of seattle, let me know if you want to meet up earlier than that.

If you guys run Costco fuel you can stop in Burlington after annecortes. Like we did for nord's memorial. A full tank from Tacoma will get you to Burlington. If the new overpass north of marysville is still under construction, you might want to add a little extra drive time.

Posted by: BeemerSteve Aug 9 2016, 09:26 AM

I'm right in the middle of repairing my firewall side clutch tube and stringing new SS fuel lines but if I can find a 110 volt mig welder soon I can make it. Otherwise, I will ride up on the second best option my BMW motorcycle.

All; a little heads up on the artist point hyway. I was up there last sat and there was about 14 miles of fresh chip seal (around maple falls). we got thru (on motorcycles) and it was just dusty, not oily. not sure if they are planning any more of that this week. just didn't want anybody to be surprised by it.

I'll be late, but I'll make some of the drive. Leaving Seattle at 1630, probably hit Chuckanut around 1900. I'll be driving the opposite direction when you're coming back down.

I'm assuming Chuckanut to B'ham/Ferndale, then 542 east?

I'm super excited for tomorrow. Those who are coming, you can park anywhere it's convenient since we'll probably be the only folks in the business park Sat afternoon. Double park triple park, it doesn't matter. 914 or not; just come.

I'll have the grub ready by 4pm. I plan on having a cooler stocked with bottled water & some sodas.

If you need to gas-up, the Chevron station at the Swinomish Casino just on the opposite side of the hwy has the cheapest gas in Anacortes (currently $2.35 for Regular). Costco in Burlington is usually about 2-5 cents cheaper (I-5 exit 229 George Hopper Rd.)

When we depart around 5:30, the route we'll be taking is as follows:

hwy-20E, Bayview Edison Rd N., Farm to Market Rd N., W. Bow Hill Rd., Chuckanut Dr. N.(hwy 11), I-5N, take exit 255 onto hwy 542 East (Mt Baker hwy) follow that to Deming where we'll meet the members of the Chuckanut Sports Car Club. From there it's twisty road up about 4500' in elevation gain to spectacular views of Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan.

Nord on far right next to his silver 914. RIP my friend. . .

Gas up at Costco before going to annecortes. iirc it's the same exit off I-5 you would take going to nate's. Perhaps the next one up but close. Nicely topped off you can make it back south without stopping. Be careful. I-5 is a WSP gauntlet all the way home. Please don't drink.

I'm in! I wasn't going to since my trunk bolt sheared off so I'm rear deckless, but such a nice drive with such good people, who cares about the trunk. I'll be there with my wife Mary Anne.

Yes 128th exit chevron off I5 at 3:00pm. 214 128th Ave Sw Everett, WA 98204. Take the 128th exit just before you come into Everett, turn left go over the freeway west and the Chevron's on the left just past Denny's.

If you're coming up 405, we could meet at the Houghton park and ride in Kirkland. It's just off the 70th St exit. Figure we'd need another half hour to get to Everett.

A great time was had by all yesterday (and last night), we got home at 1:00 driving.gif

Outside of the traffic getting through Everett Janet and myself could not have had a better time.

Nate put on a great BBQ for us, we had an exhilarating drive up the mountain once we got past a couple of slow pokes.

Standing on top a guy pulls up in a BMW Z3 and asks what's going on? I said we are doing a Memorial run for a buddy of ours. I told him how Nord use to organize a breakfast and then a run up the mountain each year, I said he meant a lot to all of us and we are not going to forget him.

Nate thanks for putting this together and making it special for all of us!

Great pic Brad. Guess we can see why they call it Artist Point. Thanks to Nate for putting this together.

Here's to Nord beer.gif

Thanks to all for coming out and supporting the Nord Memorial run to Artist Point. We were blessed with perfect weather and arguably the best group of 914 folks anywhere (and that even includes Greenie! bootyshake.gif ).

I'll post up a couple photos when I get home tonight.

Kev, where were you bro?? I had half assumed that if you make 1/3 of the posts in an event thread, you would make an appearance. . . confused24.gif poke.gif Next time take the train to MV and I'll pick you up!! lol-2.gif

I had to go to a wedding. Sort of last minute. They wanted to get hitched before the baby was born. My idea of buying them a box of rubbers as a gift didn't go over too well. $20 gift certificate for babies-r-us is what they got.
