914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Checking interest...

Posted by: RJMII Jul 20 2016, 03:31 PM

A few years ago I was custom machining the emblems like the ones pictured. Then one morning I woke up in the hospital to the news that my house had been cleaned out, my children kidnapped by their mother, and her house keys were on the table.

I took a much needed break from making emblems and I got my life back together. The divorce has been final for a year, I have a nice place to live with a 2 car garage to work put of, and the idea of getting back into making random parts has been on my mind quite a bit recently.

All of the parts files that I created were saved, and more designs could easily be created.

While making them before, I put in a lot of time and effort into developing my talents and fine tuning the process. It feels wrong to let the energy go to waste that I put into something that I enjoyed doing.

I'd be sticking with the $10/digit pricing, and only taking a limited amount of requests at a time.

Right now I'm just checking interest, while I am building a few more cnc machines. I have the router table and the small laser cutter, and have the controls for 3 more cnc setups.

The biggest thing is that I have the question in my mind of "do I build a machine that is usable for small aluminum parts, and is the emblem adventure worth revisiting?" My vote is yes...

Glad to see you back.

If you need some NEMA 23 sized steppers, let me know....no charge.... I might also have a few small servo motors you can have just for the price of shipping.

Just a thought, due to the issues you had before I'd say it would be best to build stock so that shipping was instant on all but special order items.

I know you had personal and health problems in the past, so that's why it might be best to only take payment when the product is ready to ship.

agree.gif you mentioned that before; and based on your (much appreciated) previous input, I included various scenarios along with solutions when writing my plan for moving forward.

Her input is irrelevant at this point. She insisted that we sign a contract... and everything that you helped with didn't go against the contract, nor will me starting back up and making them go against said contract.

Not yet. I have money set aside for a new attorney who has a solid reputation for being able to get full custody for dads. The purjury, abuse of the system, and the revenge ride through the judicial system is all about to be used against the ex.

As for the emblems... I'll get back to cutting and polishing aluminum!

Yes, I think 3M automotive adhesive.

Like this:

Posted by: malcolm2 Jul 22 2016, 06:50 AM

I see that you have "1.9". My "914" is OEM metal, but since I upped the 1.8 engine to a 1911, it would be cool to up the badge too.
Plus those late badges were plastic. barf.gif

Posted by: My 914 Aug 24 2016, 07:46 PM

I had sent a PM about getting a 914-8. I had not seen it in black until I saw some of the other pictures on this thread. The black is nice! Is it flat/matte? On a car with black trim, I think its the way to go.

Posted by: RJMII Aug 24 2016, 07:55 PM

In reference to Rand's comment on moving the thread... I'd like to keep this thread here, and then start a new one in the spot he suggested. Meanwhile, I'd like to post pictures of the cnc build and process of making the emblems here. Maybe even continue wits the various ideas on finishes and mounting suggestions, as they're garage type of topics.

The black emblem really did turn out well. I don't remember if I painted that one, or not.

Anyone know who it was that sandblasted theirs for the brushed aluminum look? They might have posted a picture of it in their build thread, but it had a nice look to it.

Posted by: My 914 Aug 25 2016, 07:27 PM

Does anyone know if there is an adhesive available that would allow an emblem to be removed easily without damaging it or the car's finish? If there were, it would give one the option of changing emblems or leaving them off completely depending on the day, the event, or one's mood. Its always nice to have options.

Timeline, yes. Today, tomorrow, and Thursday are all emblem cutting days. The machine is functional and calibrated. I ran some old code on it and it starts and stops the spindle, and each axis has proper movement.

Oh, and no new thread. What should I post a video of the machine cutting?

I could try to machine one that has a magnetic strip on the back of it. That would make the magnet and emblem the same shape.

sorry, I got to cutting and pushing the machine so I could find the weak spots. It had a little bit of flex and I took it apart and reinforced it in a couple of spots.

Then I got distracted with a fancy 3d scanner... and have been working away on another 914 product design.

I'm back to cutting again and I'll get that video posted! Thank you for bumping the thread; the notification email was a great reminder that you're all waiting for me to be up and running and posting media content.

It's almost as if you guys can tell when I'm working on emblems... lol

The past few days I have been plugging away here and there at more efficient methods of machining with the new cnc. fine tuning about a dozen and a half designs.

This is just a progress thread, I'll start an order thread in the member vendor section when I have a large stash of emblems on my workbench.

I don't know. It's got me stumped for machining at the moment.

the simple 914-x emblems are $10/digit (unless aluminum prices go up again) plus shipping.

I'm still working on them. I've only had an hour or 3 of strength each day, but I keep plugging away at my projects.

The edges keep coming out all jagged like this. I hate to send out garbage, especially when I know they're going on some really nice cars. It seems that there have been a lot of little things that keep getting in the way of my perfectionism and ability to get back in the groove of making a quality product as quickly as I had hoped.

Having unfilled emblem requests is getting to me. I'm going to get a good night's sleep and try again in the morning.
The emblems and doing 914 stuff again has been somewhat of a C-PTSD trigger for me but, thankfully a couple of members of the 914 community here have been understanding and encouraging.

I do apologize for the time it's taken me to get back into the swing of things and make emblems again.

Metal chips have been flying off the cnc, and I have over a dozen styles drawn... In several formats...
