HOLY DAMN SHIT!!!!

okay, so it still stumbles a bit off idle, but above 3k....

it makes piss-your-pants type power

2nd and 3rd gear are like freaking warp drive kicked in.

until 5th gear, this car is everybit as fast as the last 911SC i drove. it's actually a little scary, seriously.

Trekkor: you've still got a bit more grunt, but i would be nipping at your heals in a straight line.

Posted by: Mueller Apr 12 2005, 06:05 PM

be careful...if running lean and/or too far advanced, you can fry that new motor of yours headbang.gif

When are you driving over to my place? How about tomorrow evening?

god jake, i can only imagine. i can't wait to ride in randal's car with your creation in it... when i finish my phd, i might have to treat myself to one of your machines!

but for now, i'm HAPPPPPPY!!!

What is it?

Posted by: nebreitling Apr 12 2005, 07:51 PM

2056, Elgin cam, KB pistons, stock 2 liter bottom end, balanced, stock valve sizes, euro race header, 44 IDFs, all balanced shit inside, 9.6:1 compression, currently running premium w/ a little octane boost to be safe.

the car is a 75 w/ fiberglass bumpers and other light-bits, set up for AX where i will kick some ass this year.

cool....mine should have just a few more hp and torque....I think you have a much better suspension, mine is all stock (stock swaybars and crappy shocks)....I gotta get on the ball and start assembling my new motor...

Posted by: Joe Ricard Apr 12 2005, 08:32 PM

Cool Nate. So anybody wanna bet how long the HP buzz will last till he needs another fix? laugh.gif
SO what RPM will this motor buzz up to? Will you be able to stay in 2nd the whole course?

Posted by: grantsfo Apr 12 2005, 09:02 PM

Congrats! Sounds like it turned out well! Are you going up to Santa Rosa for AX this weekend?

I'm still debating whether I will go the 2056 route or go even bigger, 2270 sounds fun. Trying to find a good affordable local engine builder currently. I'm selling the Boxster later this year to fund my 914 project.

In the mean time just know you, Trekkor, Randall ...and ...and will have a 1795cc 90 hp 914 with a big 270 lb dude trying to chase your times down at most of the local AX this year. I'll just have to pray at the momtenum course shrine. Maybe the course design gods will give me pity this year. biggrin.gif

BTW I thought only lightweight cars with big V8's qualified for piss-your-pants fast. happy11.gif

Posted by: nebreitling Apr 12 2005, 09:21 PM

i went 2056 out of sheer budget constraints, but bumped up the compression as much as i figured the cam could take in order to get that last bit of power. i can imagine how the 2270's extra stroke would really bring out the torque.

that said, a 2270 puts you in a higher class than Fm.

I DO plan on being up in Santa Rosa this weekend for both days. trying to put some miles on the thing before hand.... and lots more tuning. i figure there's another 5hp in there just in tuning. hope the engine doesn't scatter in the meanwhile!

btw, grant, build it yourself -- even if you don't have the time. you will be amazed what you'll learn, and it's a great sense of accomplishment. mueba.gif

edit: btw, my old engine was a D-jet'd 2056 w/ the same header. this thing makes nearly half again the power, i shit you not.

Good luck chasing Randal.... smilie_pokal.gif

This years engine is super duper but next year he'll be in a class all his own with a 4 cylinder car!

Posted by: ben1440 Apr 12 2005, 10:44 PM

so for the a/x in santa rosa this weekend, is this something i can just show up to so i can just watch?

Posted by: ppickerell Apr 12 2005, 10:49 PM

I may be running in Santa Rosa this weekend, but not in my teener! huh.gif

randal knows that i'm already nipping at his heels. i'll be there soon enough... at this point, though, i just want the poor guy to get his car finished. he was telling me about both his Stage I and Stage II engine plans. sounds VERY promising, jake. it'll be good to have one of your engines out here in the norcal AX scene. randal will be a good representative, he'll put it to good use.

ben1440, definitely just show up, hang out, and watch.

Go Nathan clap.gif

Santa Rosa is really fun. You should see the top of third if they design it with a long straight.

Come early. chatsmiley.gif

I'll try to make it by the airport to say hello, though time will be tight this weekend as my mom's b-day is on Saturday and my pop's b-day is on Sunday.

I might not know who you are, so say hello to the guy who pulls up in an old Fiat sedan. The 914 is on jack stands, but will be there in spirit. smile.gif

GO BUST OUT SOME DONUTS!!! burnout.gif

mmmm, donuts. drooley.gif

I'm looking forward to having Randal as my pilot in the Norcal zone...

But this year he will just be runnning a kit engine that he will have assembled locally...

06 will be the year of the beast in Norcal...

They may have to make a new class for this animal!

Did ya ever notice that racers seldom do any bragging before
an event?.

After the season is over their record does their talkin'.

The biggest issue I see with this engine centric thinking is that the engine is about 50% of what makes a car fast in an autocross. Anything short of a sponsorship from Jake and youre usually better off putting money spent on an expensive engine into suspension, tires, etc.

I think Nathans approach of a lower budget powerful 2056cc with focus on making car light and assuring suspension is dialed in is an attainable AX car project goal for most. A big massive expensive T4 sounds exciting, but is proabably not for many of us with 914's. I'd rather have money to put into lightweight hoods, great suspension, brakes, better seats etc.

Given Nathans costs to build this wicked little 2056cc engine I'm seriously thinking of doing something similar, I'm less inclined to go bigger when I get realistic about my project.

agreed, though i'd say that engine is probably LESS than 50%... i'd rather have a totally dialed in lightweight car with a tired 1.7 than a sloppy chassis/suspension and 200 hp.

that said, power DOES count. and if you can make power out of a lighter package, all the better.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Apr 13 2005, 02:08 PM

The fastest 914 AutoX'er in NorCal runs a 1971cc carbed 2.0 that doesnt turn over 5800RPM. The only events he doesnt take TTOD is the events he doesnt attend. I rode with him at Sac. He can drive. Add all the power you want... the hardest part is adding driver.

I drove the 245hp 3.0 carbed car at the last event.. laying down the power on narrow tires is a test of patience. Unless Randal goes to 12inch wide rear slicks.. he will find it VERY difficult to put the power down. Ask Trekkor. He is NO faster than what he was with the stock injected 2.0 engine.

I love big engines and power... but I also enjoy watching people become "drivers"

Way to go Nathan! No excuses for not showing up at the WCC now. You still planning on driving down after your concert thingy? I want a ride!

Posted by: Jake Raby Apr 13 2005, 02:23 PM

It's all in the combo!

In this instance the combo contains the driver more than anything else......

Yeah, if Randal goes for the Big Daddy he'll need some serious tires on that car with 250+ Lb/ft of torque at only 3500 RPM its sure to scream...

Most of the guys I deal with simply add power because it is easier and doesn't sacrifice the car at all like removing weight can.

Posted by: Bleyseng Apr 13 2005, 04:17 PM

fastest guy up here in the under 2.4 class in a 1.7l car. The car is dialed in and has suspension mods but the driver can flat out drive, smooth as glass.

My son beat him once or twice for top time in our class in my car. Me? I was a distance 4th or 5th... dry.gif

More hp will help on certain AX courses and a non factor on others. HP doesn't matter if you can't carry speed thru the corner into the next unless there is lots of straightaway between cones.

I want hp for off the course and for on the track!

update.

back in from a nice long drive -- hasn't scattered yet!

in fact, just keeps running better and better as i drive it... i am really confounded by how much power this thing makes. it doesn't seem right, some how... maybe it also has to do with the 200 lbs i removed while the engine was in surgery...

my ignition is sub-obtimal, for sure. i'm running my old dizzy of the '75 Djet w/ the vaccuum advance disabled (w/ crane). it only has like 8 or 10 degrees total advance. okay at 4k rpm, not great off idle... beats an 009, but probably not by much.

idle was a little gassy, leaned it out slightly. oil consumption seems to be starting to drop a little. only have like 50 miles on it, so hard to tell. valves haven't moved. plugs look excellent.

Well then bring it up to Santa Rosa and let's see if you can scatter it there.

Do I need to take my trailer up there empty?

My friend Pat Costin is coming down from Reno, so you'll see a really fast and well driven 911. It's orange and in perfect condition.

No question about doing it Jake, the 2.4 is just the interim engine that we can run with the current tires. Bigger ones in 06, with a new body kit.

You're right, Brad, watching a good driver is fun and having a car with HP can be tough to get a handle on, but it's the hp to weight that rules....assuming proper set-up & equal drivers. That's why they have classes.

As to Trekkor, I keep tellin' him to get some real live AX tires, but.....better tires make better drivers.

BTW, 3 sec in a 27 sec AX is a lifetime laugh.gif
