914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Painting pedrini's

Posted by: vsg914 Apr 14 2005, 04:54 PM

Have a set of five Pedrini's from my original 73. Going to straighten them, have them bead blasted, and refinish them. Grabbed one today and experimented a little. Give your honest opinions. Ya ain't gonna hurt my feelings. It's just an idea, and I don't care what ya think anyways laugh.gif

Stay with the original?

Don't rag on the crappy paint job. it's very wet, and I didn't spend any time on the cleaning first.

A few highlights

The unpainted parts could be highly polished first, or left dull?

Posted by: vsg914 Apr 14 2005, 05:00 PM

Or maybe red instead of black?

Hi Curt!

Makes them look like a Riv...

IMO, Wurth silver and then a clear-coat is the best way to go.

Yeah... I can see that.

It's a different look. I dunno, maybe it would grow on me.

Last time I talked to Wayne Dempsey at PP....said they couldn't get it anymore....

Forget it....just did a web search and Auto Atopia or something like that says they have it @ $16.95 per rattle.

Now I don't know who to believe sad.gif

NO red! Please! biggrin.gif

I think that black looks pretty good. I would not polish the highlights. Just a nice brushed aluminum looks cool to my eyes. I bet they look good spinning. Hard to tell from the photo if you have gloss on there - I would go with a low sheen satin.

That spray paint is easy to remove or cover - you can always go with a polished look if you don't like the results.

What's you main squeeze think? biggrin.gif

Try GPR for Wurth. I know they stock the clear, they can probably get the silver.

With the metal exposed parts makes the wheel look pretty busy. An idea maybe to leave the lips unpainted/polished and the rest black?

Posted by: maf914 Apr 15 2005, 08:58 AM

The black with polished ribs reminds me of British Cosmic Wheels made for MG's, Lotus, etc. They were cast, painted black with polished highlights.

If You have the funds, You cant beat powdercoating. Impervious to chemicals, rock chips and tirebusters. biggrin.gif

Whatever you do they will need to be fully painted. Example, spokes could be painted silver, or polished and then clearcoated. You need the paint on there to protect the aluminum.

My preference would be the original silver finish. Painted black would hide the rim against the tire. Painted red would not look right to me. The spokes are too small to look good when bright against a colored background. That makes the silver my preference. On a white body car you have a lot more choice. Black and silver cars also give some good choices.

Blast them and then have them powder coated. Look at the wheels on the car Dave C. has in the forsale section. Those are powder coated a color called "Black Chrome". Dave has a family connection that owns a powder coating company. smile.gif

My best,

Actually.... I like it...... Kinda.

I agree though..... the wheel looks a little "busy"

This is just me....... but here's my suggestions:

The WHOLE lip should be unpainted..... not just the outer portion.

Keep the "lines" black, but do the "holes" in Aluminum... that will "un-busy" the wheel a little

Go to a flat black, not a gloss black.

Use a black lugbolt, or a black lugbolt cover to "hide" the fact that its a 4-lug wheel.
