ok....i trashed the turbo idea.. my wife is going to drive this car and i want it reliable for her. i can always build another hot rod motor when my 3 year old son moves out it will be 1.7l inj. on a 1.9l setup because we have 8 1.7 l setups and its free for me,

that's not a good enough excuss...a turbo motor should be just as reliable as normally asperated if care and common sense (keep boost low, do not take it to 11 )

if anything, you're wife should have a 914 with more power than stock, it's safer

well i have the turbo and a water cooled intercooler and the knowlege to do it but,,,i still have a -LOT- to do and to buy ill get the car going ( wife off my ass) and painted then ill build a nother motor..after all my shop has 6 914s out back and 4 motors in the shed i have plenty of parts

mueller, whats your background? you seam to know alot about 914's im only 25 my boss at work gets pissed at me when i talk to him about non-stock shit. he is a bare bones stock kinda guy

A&P Mechanic (license holder at least, got hired by American Airlines and laid off before I even started ), machinest and now a mechanical designer (gloryified drafter, hahaha)

I know enough to get myself into trouble too easily, and sometime enough to get myself out of trouble....jack of all trades, master of none

i don't know too much about 914's.....mostly mechanical stuff is what I like, I'm clueless if you asked me how many 914s had been made or stuff like that...details like that are not important to me

before i became a porsche mech. ( by the way if my son wanted to do this for a living id bet him with a wrench) i was a sup. over 2 cnc lasers 2 waterjets 50kpsi and 1 cnc drillpress made better money, miss it

I've have my licence for almost 20 years, I am 38. Done nothing but. What you gonna do in the future? I don't know a tech that is not frustrated with the pay in the industry. Chin up, car are becoming disposible, more and more repairs are just part changing, real money will be with the Good the Bad and the Diagnostigators !
Too bad for the project, I was keeping an eye on it. Shit happens, family first. I just put my swap on hold for 6 month to order window for the house.....priorities=oldage

I've been at it for about 10 years (mostly resto werk, but I do my own engines etc.) and get really discouraged when the werk gets slow. I had to quit doing this full time when the market fell off a few years ago and now have more werk than I can handle in my spare time. I took my dads truck (72 Jeep pickup) to a shop 3 years ago because he put a carb on it and it ran like sh-t. Guy calls me to tell me it's ready, I go pick it up get out of the parking lot and turn right around. Tell him it runs WORSE than my dad had it so he sends the "mechanic" out to talk to me. I ask him where he set the timing "3 deg before" I told him it should be 5 after so he goes inside, comes out with a screw driver and tunrs the mixture screw wile holding the timing light! I told him to his face he shouldn't be anywhere near a vehicle went inside and demanded my $ back, took it home and fixed it myself. "mechanics" don't werk in shops any more they OWN them Try to get a guy at your local shop to adjust a set of 911 carbs! "Uh, where do I plug in the scanner? " Sorry for the rant I just get pissy that I can't make a buck because my knowledge is outdated

4 Year apprenticeship
I logged 2000 hours of after work training.
I bleed for a living.
I work in temperature extremes
Poisoness enviroment/products
High stress (responsible for my personal repairs)
Electronic savy... I asked a friend that just finished, 5 years university, electronic engineer, about the can bus and some comunication protocols, he said they touched it in 3rd year but its a specialty...try to find a job if you can't hook up and read a scanner and often decifer (diagnose).
Science professors, got to know chemicals and there reactions, tubing, preasures, hydrolics. temperature scientist. Don't forget FAST and cheap.

Maybe compare this to other tradesmen, electrician, plumber, etc...

For the recrutement, we have to say all this and tell them if they are really good after 10 years you can make 20-23 an hour. The new generation is not jumping to the idea of this type of hard labour, the automobile tech force is overflowing with inexperienced/shitass labour. I run a 2 man show at the shop (downsized 3 years ago) I have a reputation to keep.

I am waiting for the average door rate at 100$ to 150$ an hour and you will see a whole new breed of techs. And at this hourly rate we are keeping with general tradesmen.

We have been there for over 2 years now. Most shops in this area are well over 100$ an hour. The dealership is around 150$ an hour (Porsche)

Still cant eat/live here.

Ask your boss if he knows who Ferdinand Piech is. As director of experimental development he led the creation of the Carrera 6, 910, 907, 908, and the winningest Porsche endurance racer, the 917. What did Piech drive? A 914. Was it stock? No. It was powered by a flat-8 from a 908. Most of the time. He also ran a turbo-charged 2.0 six in the same 914 durring his engine development work on the first 911 turbo. Then tell your boss that if "non-stock shit" is good enough for the guy who led development of the 917 and the 911-turbo then it's good enough for you. It seems to me that you're NOT true to the Porsche spirit UNLESS you embrace the spirit of experimental development.
