There are 2 keys for this car I just picked up. A red key which was in the ignition, that was on the floor and a black key which I found in the ashtray. They are very different looking. The black key seems to work. What is the red key for? Attached Image

Originally, they were a master and valet key (that would not unlock the glovebox or front trunk), but I wonder if some lock was previously changed as they really don't look similar. Have to try them in the lock cylinders to see what works.

black key was the original master, The red was for a valet, which should only work in the door and ignition. . Other than red and black, the difference in the keys visually was insignificant. . only one 'bump' was different. . The keys you pictured were never originally related. . If they both now work it's highly probably someone modified you locks. .

All 10 cuts are the same on both keys. The difference is in the profile of the key.
The "wings" are offset on the Master but not on the Valet. There is a notch in one of the wafers of the trunk and glovebox locks. The notch aligns with the profile of the Valet key, preventing the wafer from moving to the centered position.

The red key unlocks the the extra 50hp for spirited driving. You mean you haven't been using it?

A Master and valet can be cut from the same blank, they just flip it over.

Try the master in the glove box and front trunk. If it works I would rekey to the master.

Those keys are not for the same locks. The master and valet keys will both look identical in the cut portion with the only difference being the valet key will have a groove on the left side of the key that extends all the way back to the head of the key. The master key has that groove as well but is stops short of the head of the key. I am looking at my original keys right now and that is the only difference between the two keys. Those keys are definitely not to the same locks and car originally.

while we're on the subject of keys, does anyone have a recommendation of where to have replacement or extra keys made?

I buy OEM blanks on Amazon and have a local locksmith shop cut them for me.
You can use inexpensive blanks instead. A good locksmith will have them: P-05
I measure the ten key cuts (1,2,3,4) and write them down to be entered in a digital cutter.
This makes a better key than duplicating a worn original.

In the interest of complete information.
The master key (black) fits and works all locks on the car.
The valet key (red) unlocks the doors and operates the ignition only, It will not unlock the front trunk or the glove box.
If entrusting your car to a valet you would give the red key only, thus keeping your locked compartments out of reach to the valet .
