914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Warped Engine Lid?

Posted by: turnaround89 Sep 25 2016, 01:36 PM

I think my engine lid may be warped.

I am working on fitting my fiberglass rear decklid to the car and wanted to align the decklid to the engine lid.

The previous owner must have broken the engine lid brackets as the welds on them looked awful. I cut those out with the plan to purchase new brackets and weld them in properly. In doing so I began lining everything up and found the problem in the picture below.

In the picture I am mocking up the fitment of the engine lid. Holding the engine lid so that the passenger side vent grill matches up perfectly I found that the drivers side is very low at the back side. So, obviously if you match up the driver side with the side vent grill, the passenger side is too high.

I did remove the torsion bars on the engine lid so I could move the hinges more easily when the time comes to weld the bracket in.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Yep been there. Engine deck lid mount placement is everything. Doubtful the deck lid is warped that much.

So if I put the mounts back on, will the mounts be able to hold the lid to fit properly? Right now it seems like the engine lid is so far off with me just holding it.

Not sure if this helps, but here is the engine lid on the rear deck lid. One front corner touches the other does not.

Pretty sure this is not correct

Post some pics of the mounts on the car.
It's also possible the U attachments on the lid have been bent some. I've seen one that was adjusted for a mount that was pulling down and away, and when we fixed it had to bend back. Maybe that's what's going on here?

The mounts have been cut off the car already. I am planning on ordering the new ones this week.

Looks like the engine lid is deformed and not just the mounting bracket.

Thats what I was thinking. I pulled the engine hood latch pin so that I could lay the lid on a flat surface without the pin propping up one side. So the picture of the engine lid shows that it was somehow damaged(dropped, jumped on, etc)

Guess I'll be purchasing a GT engine lid sooner than expected.

I have a spare lid. But if I sell it maybe for $100 plus shipping. But I recommend GT lid that Sergio makes (member here: PCA7GGR) and just a few more dollars.

I greatly appreciate the offer ndfrigi, but since I'm doing an Subaru conversion id like the GT lid for the intercooler.

I just sent a PM to Sergio. Awaiting a reply!
