My apologies for being lazy and asking this question but what is the ID of the factory HEs vs. the 1 5/8ths of Ben's HEs (I'm assuming Ben's are larger)?

At what point (engine-size wise) is it recommended to make the transition?

Posted by: mb911 Sep 26 2016, 09:22 AM

1.5 inch was stock with an Id of 1.375..

Posted by: mb911 Sep 26 2016, 09:46 AM

Just a note shipping is not included. I just thought I would mention that ahead of the time..

For those not in the initial buy I will sell you sets at 1650 after the first sets are fullfilled but will not take any orders discounted after the 1st group buy starts getting delivered.

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Sep 26 2016, 11:01 AM

Is this for headers or heat exchangers—as in, will these get heater boxes?

Thanks,

pete

Posted by: mb911 Sep 26 2016, 11:13 AM

Yup heater boxes as well.

The work in progress looks like stainless..... is it ?........ looks fantastic !
Also, what model is your miller welder ? mig or mig/tig ?

Posted by: mb911 Sep 26 2016, 06:41 PM

Stainless yes..

It's a plasma that you are seeing

Henry and I spoke allot about header sizing. 2.7 and up is best for 15/8" but 2.4 or 2.5 in non stock form benefit hugely from the larger header.. I will be using them on my 2.4.

Posted by: Steve Sep 27 2016, 09:38 PM

Deposits in the mail.

Posted by: mb911 Sep 29 2016, 03:29 PM

Thanks everyone checks are starting to make there way here.. I will send invoices out to everyone whom has paid with all the important information.. Will update more by the end of the weekend of the prototype s.. I will be gone most of the weekend but my fabricator will be working them..

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Sep 29 2016, 03:33 PM

Cool project!

May be interested depending on heater box arrangement, as the only option so far that has appealed to me is the Dansk repop (which I think is mild steel?). That said, wonder if the smaller Dansk setup is better sized for a 2.2...though it did put 170 hp to the rear wheels.

These would be 2X - 3X the cost if they were 911 parts. (Or if we were just paying Ben what he's worth)

They may get there after group buy to make them feasible.

Have you mocked up the heater boxes yet? Curious to what they're gonna look like.

That is if you will be making them that way?

PM sent, deposit in tomorrow's mail.

We can make them without heat exchangers as well.. They will be 1300..

Ben, Thanks for posting your photos. Makes me want to get a six for my 914. laugh.gif

I was reading the October 2016 issue of Classics and Sports Car and came across the article below about a British exhaust fabricator. Shown in the photos is a set of headers and jig for a 911. I thought you might find it interesting. Sorry about the clarity, but it is a scan from my home printer.

Curious how the lack of back pressure would effect a small motor. I am currently running stock heat exchangers on my 3.2 and it only seems to effect the top end.

Low and tq will be effected by to large of primary.. That said the smaller displacement engines typically have the power band higher in the rpm range so would not be real noticeable.

i'm in there too somewhere..paid deposit on the 01 oct but not on the list .

Posted by: mb911 Oct 2 2016, 06:16 AM

Sorry list needs to be amended. I will do that when I get home.. To date I have received 4 deposits so once I wade through all of that I will update the list.. Sixnotfour there is room for you at the pricing.. Had a couple drop out so your in if you want to be. Maddin your deposit was received..

Sorry group buys are a cluster and they are time consuming.. As I said I will update today..

Posted by: mb911 Oct 2 2016, 08:35 AM

Ok just got home from a weekend away and checked mail box and had 9 checks in there along with 1 paypal.. I have updated the list on the 1st page but need everyones help as people sent checks and some did not give me their screen names so if you could make those connections for me so I can update my binder..

After some thought I will increase to allow everyone in on the group buy that has inquired to date and sends deposits. So that should cover 15 people. PMB and supertec are businesses so they are not shown on the group buy etc and not part of the count.

I have a few that want o2 bungs and that is just fine. I dont have any made at this point but if you want them added just purchase SS ones on line and send them to me. We will charge 15 dollars per to weld on.. MFi heater tubes are also in play and that will be T&M at $60 per hour..

Please email directly at mbconsulting21@gmail.com or text 262-364-7426 for amendments to the list..

Sorry for the confusion this was way bigger then I thought so the PMs were over whelming

So question for all of the buyers would a gasket kit be beneficial to the group buy? I can research it price wise but carrera gaskets would make the most sense size wise..let me know your thoughts.

Posted by: Steve Oct 4 2016, 07:34 AM

One stop shop would be nice, regarding the gaskets, but not important to me. I will probably use this opportunity to adjust the valves and do an oil change while the heat exchangers are off, which means I will also need an oil filter and valve cover gaskets.

I will look and see what they would cost for exhaust only gaskets and probably the barrel nuts and copper clad 12mm(8mm) nuts..

Ditto for me. Not an immediate need, but definitely interested. I'm running a 2.7 with the stock boxes, so have the usual concerns. Please post some pics of the heater boxes in your spare time rolleyes.gif

Either mockups or real deal is fine. Thanks.

Heater box pictures hopefully this weekend. No idea on shipping yet.. I need vs completed set so I can figure out the safest and most cost effective way to ship them much like how ssi did..

I use to ship mufflers back in the day for about 35 dollars but since these will be much lower volume I will ship through a friend's business account as he sends out hundreds of wheels out daily and will give the best prices..

Ben, I purchased my one and only 914 about 7 yrs ago. I am still in the "collecting parts stage" You are moving at light speed compared to me. I am in HI and have no need for heat here, still think I have to have them. So yea, anyways I'm going to be sending in my deposit soon, along with having some O2 bungs sent your way. My zip here is 96789 for est. shipping costs. I know, Hawaii will probably be expensive. My family is in MN and so there may be some other options. Thanks again!

Posted by: mb911 Oct 7 2016, 02:36 PM

Ok so the expanded 15 people group buy is now closed.. I will update the 1st post with all the names that have deposited.. I have closed the 1500 group buy at the beginning of last weekend but was waiting for that inquired to arrive. All that inquired should have invoices shortly in the mail.

I am accepting 1650 preorders for after the group buy until the 1st units start shipping.. I expect we will have a few sets ship within the next month..

After pre order the price will go to 1900 For the sets to allow for wholesalers and retail structures.

Emails or texts or calls are best mbconsulting21@ gmail.com. 2623647426.

Oh and orders will ship in order of deposits received.

Not much to report.. Doing some tweaks , fit on engine with muffler and comparing to factory set we have here. Fingers crossed but planning on heat exchanger pictures this week and 20 sets of headers completed next while we wait on laser cuts for heat exchangers.. Fingers crossed but shooting for earlier deliverys.. Maybe mid November.. Again that is the hope.

So should he invest in a a stamping press? because you don't like the shape, silly comments really can you prove the air will flow better...don't think so.
Tops marks for doing what NO one has done with 6 exhaust solutions for our cars.

Posted by: Ed_914 Nov 3 2016, 02:49 AM

Don't misunderstand me. I like very much what has been done and I ordered everything
Ben makes for my six conversion. ( he just needs to sort out the card payment system)
Making the tooling would be very expensive but also very nice. And as the full rebuild cost an arm and a leg anyway ,I wouldn't be unhappy to pay more for a stamped version.
Still love the fact that Ben is making this. smilie_pokal.gif

Posted by: mb911 Nov 3 2016, 04:50 AM

I would love to stamp them it just that tooling would be about 20k .. If you do a quick count of people that are in.. It would take 10 times that amount to pay them off.. It just doesn't make financial sense.. Now if I charged 2600 for them then maybe so.

Posted by: maddin Nov 3 2016, 04:58 AM

Stamping out the shells in a big press would make it look like the oem pieces.
But -
Its under the car
Its actually getting done!
It should be pretty awesome the way it is now

I would love to stamp them it just that tooling would be about 20k .. If you do a quick count of people that are in.. It would take 10 times that amount to pay them off.. It just doesn't make financial sense.. Now if I charged 2600 for them then maybe so.

The original set would have cost me $3000 and yours is better for my engine so $2600 is fine by me, but I understand the market is small and it is under the car and nothing else is original, so why am I even bringing it up WTF.gif Just getting carried away piratenanner.gif

Too bad you couldn't do a stamping for the heat exchanger box, I'm not feeling the boxy too square cornered look.

So should he invest in a a stamping press? because you don't like the shape, silly comments really can you prove the air will flow better...don't think so.

Once these HE are done, what are the common thoughts on JetCoating them? Anyone considering this or know the Pros and Cons?

Posted by: mepstein Nov 3 2016, 08:57 AM

They are stainless so I'm satisfied -as is. I was just talking to Ben last night about a second set.

Posted by: mb911 Nov 3 2016, 09:10 AM

Yup no need to coat as they are stainless..

Re criticism I don't take any offense.. I look at value for the dollar and for what the sell price is there is no way any U.S. manufacturers could do it any cheaper with stamped shrouds. I wish there was enough demand but there just isn't. Long term goal is to sell 2 sets a month and I am not sure if that is even possible?? If I am wrong I will be surprised.

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Nov 3 2016, 10:38 AM

This looks to be a really nice product, and one that addresses a problem at an attractive price. If I had a big-displacement six, I would probably go this way. For those who, like me, have smaller sixes and like the look of the original heater boxes (not that we spend much time looking at them...), there is already a product out there. I will probably go with the Dansk HEs in mild steel, and then have them Jet Hot coated. I figure those should last for the rest of my 914's life—and certainly mine.

It is GOOD to have two great options. If I do a larger engine at some point, these will be on my radar. They look superior to some of the other aftermarket HEs to date. Cool seller, too. Can deal with criticism, but understands his product and plan and can back it up. Thanks for doing these!

The plan is the 1st set will ship this week and 3 more the following week. So the 1st 4 depositer s will get the 1st 4 sets.. There will be a small break in shipping as have to take care of a small suergery that will delay building more sets for about 2 weeks..

Great thread. You do beautiful work. I am not doing a six conversion, but it sure is tempting.

I have a question though and this is not criticism. How do you prevent rattling or vibration from the heat exchanger (HE) enclosure on the headers? On stock HE's the jacket is crimped around the exhaust pipes, I assume to reduce vibrations and also to seal in the hot air being pushed through the HE's to the cabin.

Stock ones actually have a tab that bolts to the flange to stop the rattling we will do the same.

Its a good thought.. I may do that moving forward..

Little update.. Mark has been working on installing these and sending pictures of his setup. So far we ran into a little trouble with the jwest shift linkage and an after market or should I say modified 911 oil scavenge line clearance issue. He is documenting everything so we can make some minor adjustments.. The shift linkage (jwest) seems to be the biggest issue as of now but I don't know how many people actually have that set up either..

Good progress though.

Posted by: Steve Nov 18 2016, 10:59 AM

Is the Jwest shift rod bent? On my 916 trans, mine is straight and has lots of clearance. The stock heat exchangers are beveled on top to clear the oil lines on both sides. If you bevel yours to match the stock heat exchangers, you should be good to go.

Check out your stock six heat exchangers. They are both beveled on top. The drivers side is beveled to clear the oil cooler line and the passenger side is beveled to clear the return line.

In progress investigation

Posted by: mepstein Nov 18 2016, 02:54 PM

I think the 914 side shift console may be further from the transmission centerline than a 915/916 trans. But in any case it will pay for Ben to build for, let's not say worse case but build in enough room to make most combinations work without modifications to the heat exchangers. I'm sure most buyers, once they receive the product, will want to install them, have them fit correctly, and then drive and enjoy.
I can tell you the look and feel of the heat exchangers are first rate. The metal is all heavy gauge. The welding is second to none. All the guys at the shop are impressed with the product. Now Ben is just making sure they will work for everyone.

Posted by: mb911 Nov 18 2016, 03:03 PM

We looked at our tacked up boxes tonight with reference pictures from Mark and have a way to make everything work.. The one thing is the one spot by the knuckle closest to the trans shift mechanism is actually 1/2" narrower then what is stock. So there is no way that linkage would work with stock heat exchangers.. More good info..

Nice work,I like the way you set upon a project such as this and just get on with it ,few questions..wondering why you never used a merged connector @ the junction of the 3 pipes ?
Like what you have done with the heater boxes, they appear to have a larger displacement that the stock ones, would you think that would benefit heater performance ?
Would the stainless steel generate more heat than mild steel ?

Stainless doesn't transfer heat as well as mild steel but once it's hot it will retain it

Merge was just as close to original as possible without adding a bunch of cost.

Ok so not part of the group buy but just came to mind this weekend..

For those of you with thick flange heads like some 2.7s 3.0 3.2 3.6.. You will have to either change exhaust studs or cut them shorter or use a stack of washers to take up the distance which is about 5/16".. This is particularly important if you use barrel nuts which you should like stock.

I may have a solution. I can have thick stainless washers laser cut for those that would like them and sell them at an extremely reasonable price.. I know there is only a few of you that will need them so email if your interested and I will get pricing.

Ps shipping 9 through 11 sets this week so moving along nicely.

Ben,
Do the new heat exchangers have the same exhaust manifold thickness as stock 914-6 heat exchangers? I'm running stock barrel nuts with my 3.2 and factory six heat exchangers and they work fine with no washers or spacers.

I want to thank everyone that was so patient with the build process. We now have a viable option out there for -6 cars and easy cheaper then any other option. I should have stock by Hershey.

Now going to do some 1.5" for the small displacement cars if anyone is interested please let me know.

Posted by: Steve Apr 8 2017, 07:27 AM

Since the stock exchangers are 1.5", wouldn't 1 3/4" for the 3.6 crowd be more popular?
I would do a pole.

Posted by: mepstein Apr 8 2017, 08:33 AM

I was going to use Ben's 1 5/8 for my 3.6 - I figure I should be good for a street car. Do you think a larger size is needed.

I would think there are more small displacement 6's than 3.6-3.8's.

Posted by: Steve Apr 8 2017, 08:37 AM

I heard that stock for a 3.6 is 1 5/8", but most conversions use 1 3/4" headers.

Posted by: Steve Apr 29 2017, 06:31 PM

I finally found time to try to install them. They are sitting too high at the muffler hanger. Any ideas? Otherwise it bolted up fine.
My stock factory 914-6 heat exchangers worked fine with the stock 2.0 muffler hanger.

I used an England (sp?) rear hanger. It fit very well. If a stock one won't work, it should be easy to modify or make a new one. Might be Ben's next project.

One thought, I have a 914 trans, yours is a 915, is that the issue?

The factory 914-6 heat exchangers worked fine, with the 914-4 2.0 hanger. I also used the same heat 914-6 heat exchangers with the same hanger with the previous 914 trans.

Posted by: Steve Apr 29 2017, 07:58 PM

I'm going to see if I can get a 1/2"-1" spacer to push the muffler further out. It will then clear the trans. I can modify the muffler bracket or use metal strips from the hanger to the muffler. Just curious if anyone else has tried these heat exchangers with a stock 914-4 2.0 muffler hanger or stock 914-6 hanger. Raising the muffler up a bit for more ground clearance is not necessarily a bad thing.

Posted by: mb911 Apr 30 2017, 05:34 AM

This is a very unusual issue as I have not had this report from anyone else and these were copied exactly off the original heat exchangers with height, locations, angles, etc. The other thing is these are not made as a set so if something was wrong with a height some where that was caused by a manufacturing flaw it wouldn't show up on both heat exchangers.

Ps if you want some muffler flanges I can send you some to use as spacers just let me know. But still a curious issue regardless.

Thanks!! Who knows it could be my setup. No big deal I will make it work!!
Just curious on who else is using a stock hanger.
I will take some measurements later today, to figure out how far out I need to space the muffler. There is plenty of room. Thanks again for all your help. Every thing else fit fine. This is the least of my worry's.

Posted by: mepstein Apr 30 2017, 09:38 AM

Is there enough meat at the area where the hanger bolts to the trans to oval the holes to give you more adjustment or even drill a second set of holes.

Posted by: Steve Apr 30 2017, 10:23 AM

If there's a will there's a way!!
Thanks for the feedback and help!!
I can drill new holes in the hanger and extend the slot an inch for the trans cooler.
I'm going to need Ben to fab up 1.5" extenders, to clear the backup light switch. I will also extend the holes in the fiberglass GT valance up an inch. At least now the Triad muffler will have the same ground clearance as the trans.
Here's some pictures of my hobby. My neighbor calls it "my labor of love".

Engman?

He passed away a couple years back and the hanger is NLA unless someone picked up making it. I know the chassis stiffener kit (interior) is being done by someone.

Yes, I purchased it a couple years back. You know how these projects take time to come together ...

Thanks Ben!! I think my car is special. Especially since I'm using an after market muffler (Triad).
Mepstein didn't have a problem. The Engman hanger should of been a duplicate of the 2.0 hanger. Engman (RIP) made cool race look products with holes in them to make them look racy / lighter. I don't know who else would need the spacers. I wish I had a stock six log muffler to compare. The space behind my trans is needed for the back up switch plus a local shop put a fitting on the end of my trans for a trans cooler. I don't know who else would need this mod.
I am curious though... Looking at McMarks picture that you posted, it also looks like the hanger and muffler are an inch lower.

That's my car. It's just distorted perspective. The muffler is just hanging on to the hanger with some hose clamps. Nothing was tightened down. When the hanger is against the heat exchangers, everything lines up.

I don't run the shorted 911 hardline shown in the pic. The hardline worked well with headers but not with these heat exchangers. I just ran the ss line directly to the engine. I figure the heat exchanger is a good buffer from the heat of the header.

Posted by: Steve May 4 2017, 10:33 AM

Thanks for the clarification. Weird the hanger distance looked just like mine. I'm running the PMS short return line. It is a tight fit, but should be fine. I will check it occasionally in the future. I will post pictures of mine when it's back together.
Thanks again Ben for making these!!

piratenanner.gif Finally finished installing the heat exchangers. Very noticeable difference in power and throttle response over the stock six heat exchangers. Thanks Ben for the awesome support and help!! I am very happy with my purchase. Glad I got in on the group buy!! Killer deal!!!

1.5" was a mistake. Not enough room for nuts and washers. My bad... I should of said 2". I made the 1.5" work. It might make more sense some day for me to just reweld the muffler flanges on the muffler, versus a spacer. Here's a picture of the spacer. It works fine. Thanks again for the awesome support and help!!

You know I have added these beautiful heat exchangers to my list..... Steve's comments re the 3,2 power difference sealed it for me - but I already suspected that would be the case. beerchug.gif

Steve, i think a threaded stud would also have worked but glad to see you're back on the road.

I actually used long bolts. A threaded stud would of also worked.

So pelican parts will be listing these in their catalog shortly. Could any of you share hi res shots of your heat exchangers either mounted on the car or set by the car ready for install?

Please email them to mbconsulting21@gmail.com or post here.. Thanks again.

Updates

There seems to be some of the same questions that pop up when people go to install these.
1st is what type of nuts should be used for installation? You should use the same setup as a 911 with barrel nuts in the locations with the pass through holes. The attached photo shows what they are.

Next what oil lines should you use? Typically stock setup is very efficient but a stock -6 cooler has a bracket that can interfere with the heat exchanger so note that. Eric from Pmb is the only one to my knowledge that has run into this but should be noted.

Price wise currently they are $1950 for 914world folks. I can hold that price for sure for the next 4 sets but after my current stainless inventory is used up then we will be affected by the current steel price surge.. This is for both for 1.5" and 1.625 ..

After a 3 years of making these very high quality heat exchangers I have to make a decision. We recently did time studys on these and discovered that they just aren't worth making with the current cost of materials and the labor required to build them. I have approximately 5 set's left worth of parts and will honor the 2200 retail on them until those are gone and also the world members discount. After that the price will jump to 27-2800 retail(yet to be determined).. I will look into developing a cheaper version for those still looking for a header with heat but it will not look anything like these or the stock for that matter.

Thank you for all of your support on these over the year's and hope to continue to build them but I wanted to be up front so no surprises.

I will still make them in the future but they just have to get more expensive..

I still have the 5 or so sets that I will honor pricing.

Prices are going up Jan 1 so get in while you can.. I realized I have more parts then I thought so the more the merrier.. 1950 until the end of the year..
