From Atlanta? Tony, are you really bringing your beast? That would win an award for sure. smilie_pokal.gif

Posted by: matthepcat Oct 4 2016, 01:02 AM

Very cool! Pretty close to home.

Yes elevation is 7-8k feet and there is the potential for snow in early June.

There is a rare chance that the Tioga pass on SR120 could not be open by June 1 (has happened 6 times since 1980)

Bring your adjustment tools carb guys!

Posted by: Cracker Oct 4 2016, 07:04 AM

Ha! Not exactly. I have "recruited" another chap from slightly farther to the East of me - time will tell whether I have a caravan or solo effort.

The basis for the long haul is to make it a celebration/graduation trip for my son - father/son only. I intend to also take in a track day at Laguna or Sonoma either before or after WCR. If I can get that pulled together, maybe a few locals can join me - show me the lines. poke.gif

Below is a pic of that "young puny kid" a few years ago in the WCR region! He's grown up since then... beerchug.gif

PS: I am taking him on THIS trip in lieu of OLOA in May - too many family conflicts and it still did not include my son. I feel this is the win/win choice in front of me. Looking forward to meeting some of you Western folks...

Sounds great Tony!! Cant wait for the both of you to join us! Lots of father/sons get together for these sorts of events (Including my own father).

I will bring my(my dads) standalone wideband for those that need to make carb adjustments @ elevation. Make sure you bring leaner main jets if you have those, if not it might be a good idea to get some leaner main jets.

Motel 6 is $10 less per night than the negotiated price for the resort.. FYI. They had a crappy pool, no restraunt or bar or conference area, and the parking was horrible for a meeting area.

My wife and I were just up there. The road from Mono Lake to near Benton that then cuts back over to Mammoth Lakes is a great driving road. Not particularly long, but really scenic.

Bodie isn't far, Victoria Lakes, Convict Lake (good parking and a great place for a picnic), hot springs, Mono Lake (south shore), Rainbow Falls/Devil's Postpile, Yosemite... Tons of stuff all pretty close by.

I stayed at the Juniper Springs Resort last summer. Very nice townhouse and condo style accommodations. Maybe the best part for us, indoor parking garage.

I stayed at the Village Lodge this past summer over the 4th of July. It's more centrally located but did cost a few dollars more.

Mammoth mountain held its last downhill ski runs on the 4th. Huge party!

Just got back from doing a little recon. Mammoth Mountain Inn is in a good spot, secluded, big campus. I don't think Amoy will get us kicked out.

There are some cool roads for 914. Fon the hotel to Yosemite Valley floor will be about a 2 hour drive. Entrance fee is $30 and good for 7 days. There is a great spot on the West side of Tuolumne Meadows for a photo opp. Many other too but this one looked great. We did not go into the valley this time as we were on a mission to get to Mammoth.

We also hit up a couple loops around lakes, like the June Lake loop. Lots of cool roads.

We headed out to Bodie (ghost town) on a short cut provided by my iphone. It turned into a 4WD road and Marty had to turn back. My Dodge Diesel made quick work of the sand wash. Ended up being a 10 mile dirt road through a valley and over a mountain. Not a good 914 road. The way out we took the main road which was 3 miles of dirt, then nice pavement. a 914 could eisliy make this road but would be very dusty at the end. I think Bodie is off the list. It is very cool and a must see for all at some point.

Attached Image

For those that are towing from the central valley, use Hwy 120 through Yosemite. We took Hwy 108 over the Sonora pass on the way back. This is an awesome road if you are driving your 914 but would be sketchy on the East side of the mountain if you tow. We could do a long tour Hwy 395 to 120 into Yosemite, then on to 108 and back to 395. Would be an awesome 914 drive but maybe 5-6 hours of seat time.

Thanks Mike for doing this (and Marty too)...I only have 3" of ground clearance (I rub on a ripple) I don't mind breaking from the pack to take another route but is there is there one in the vicinity of the off-road/dirt road? Race cars on roads problem.

Tony

Posted by: Andyrew Oct 10 2016, 08:04 AM

Bodie I think will stay on the "Optional" suggested sites for non 914's. I plan on having a good amount of unscheduled sites and maps available to allow for those with extra time built into their schedule to enjoy the area or for those that dont want to take the longer trips that we may schedule.

Mike and Marty, Great recon mission! We have lots of great stuff to discuss!!

Posted by: RoadGlue Oct 10 2016, 11:01 AM

Did you go into Bodie off the main road from 395? I ask because there are four or five different roads into the park, most of which are not very well maintained. Only the main road in is any good. It's paved until the last three or so miles. It's good dirt, except for the washboarding in certain sections. No ground clearance issues, even with a lowered 914.

Washboarding sucks, but from what you've described you went in from one of the alternate entrances.

Source: I was there three weeks ago.

Posted by: 76-914 Oct 10 2016, 11:09 AM

Washboarding ain't too bad if you keep the speed up (above 30). beerchug.gif

I took a "short cut" lead by my iphone navigation system. It was clearly one of the other routes.

On the main road from 395, ground clearance would not be a problem for all but the lowest cars like Matthepcat's car. My car is low and I could make it on the main road. There is only 3 miles of maintained dirt road going this way. The other 4 routes into Bodie should only be driven by Eric Shea's rally car. Which would be a blast!

Marty and I need to make a couple more recon missions before the pass closes. It's supposed to rain this weekend so we will see how much snow falls in the mountain...

If we take 914's here, they WILL get dusty. We should go right before the show and shine. biggrin.gif

If you like ghost towns, Bodie is worth the effort.

And a couple layers of fleece and a good sleeping bag is all you need. 40 degrees at coldest is seriously not cold for anyone who loves camping. All you need is the right gear to stay warm and comfy. Sleeping under the stars up there gives new meaning to stellar! So worth packing the right gear to enjoy night skies that most people never get to see. Up there, viewing satellites and meteors is guaranteed regularly.

Five hours and 36 minutes driving time one way.

I will be there if I get the car done by then.

I better get the car done by then, WAY before then.

Five hours and 22-48 minutes driving time one way for me smile.gif

I will be there in the P-car or the P-truck or driving the P-truck towing the P-car.

I'd better finish one and not break the other.

Thats only a day of travel! The last 2 hours of the trip has amazing scenery!

Posted by: Cracker Nov 22 2016, 06:43 PM

The "plan" is to trailer out, do WCR & a track day at Sonoma - that would be the ideal scenario. If a date (track day) can't be arranged I seriously have to consider just flying out with my son and renting a car - to trailer or not to trailer? It makes a 9 day difference in the schedule.

I'm goin to jus say, you should clean things after driving on dusty roads if you have oil seepage collecting it. wacko.gif Our resident dirt rally racer Moggy could offer some input on that. Don't blame the road for your maintenance fail. Driving to Bodie is worthwhile. It's not that bad.

I was there the first week of June last year and there was still skiing on the mountain. There is more snow this year (soon to be over 300") than last so I would anticipate the possibility of skiing if anyone is interested.
Fishing is good during the first week in June too. Plenty of lakes to land some big fish! Save room for your gear.
If you guys are interested in a place on the water (Lower Twin Lakes), check-out Tamarack Lodge. You will have to pay a few dollars more but the scenery is great!

I attended the 2014 WCR in Lake Tahoe. On the way up I tried to visit Bodie. The first couple of miles of the road are paved, but once I hit the dirt portion, I gave up and turned around. My car is just too low, and sprung too stiff. I look forward to visiting next time I am traveling through in my truck.

You missed a great place. There's nothing on that road that would interfere with a lowered car. I do get the washboardy torture in spots. But dang, it bums me when people turn away from great life experiences when SO close because of minor creature comforts. Seize the day!

Don't overshoot the runway as the mountain doesn't forgive that sin. And, that wind!

That's funny....and not. It is very interesting to be sure.

I was in a twin Piper once and the pilot did overshoot it.

The plane ran down past the last marker and just barely stopped of the edge off the end of the runway.

You could have heard a pin drop.

So I said........now what. Do we get out the chains?

25 feet of snow and counting. Bring the skis.

Don't think Tioga will be open but you never know.

I now have an official WCR plan; Mike needs to find new sleeping digs (sorry) - not pulling the trailer; and now I am looking for a couple seats at WCR. We have decided the emphasis of this trip should be the "Father/Son" component and without the hassle associated with pulling a trailer/car 7500+ miles. We are driving out but WCR is just one of the many destinations on the itinerary. This will be a breeze by comparison. We are both looking forward to meeting you Leftcoasters in person, first and foremost, and secondly, seeing your rides too!

I'm headed to the PCA Road Runner Region's Fiesta New Mexico over Memorial Day weekend, then a few days in the Mesa Verde NP area, on to WCR, then Vegas, Arches NP, and then PCA Alpine Mtn Region's Rocky Mtn High Way. Not sure what I'll do on the way back to stl.

Hopefully not too ambitious for my '73 2.0, but I drove to Okteenerfest last year with no major issues and will be driving to Texas in March for Hill Country Rallye, Big Bend NP, and Treffen Hill Country as the next test drive. Last year I drove my 911 from Vermont to California, this year it's the 914's turn.

That's okay Tony! Living in Utah all these years inspired me to get full winter camping gear good to about 20 below. I'm a winter camping kid since the Boy Scouts! shades.gif
And I think it's a great idea to keep it simple, let Father and Son enjoy the experience with as little hassle as possible. There's plenty to see and do going both ways!

The snow pack at Mammoth right now is pretty heavy. They have received 30 feet of snow this season so far. (as of 2/4/17)

There is a very good chance there will still be snow on the ground in June. Just food for thought for all you camper types...

PS: I'll make sure to keep an eye out for those minuscule teeners around me - no monster truck activities.

There has been a bit more concern over snow. You can see in the Mammoth live cams that the roads are already clear, and we have 2 1/2 months before the event! The mountain will have snow on it for those that want to Ski, however the roads should be completely clear.

I skied there on July 4th 1983. I remember it well. Back then there was 25 ft. of packed snow. It was slush skiing. In the morning it was frozen and it melted during the day. Had to stop by 1 PM. I was 31years old. Just to say I did it.

Last night I took a look at the opening dates for the Sierra mountain passes that would be applicable for those driving from the Bay Area. Given the record amount of snow and more expected next week you could expect the following:

- Tioga Pass on highway 120 will most likely NOT be open. This would have been the shortest route.
- Carson Pass on highway 88 is kept open year around. To get to Mammoth this also requires Monitor Pass on highway 89 to be open. This is very likely. Highway 88 is a great drive.
- Sonora Pass on highway 108 is likely to be open. This is probably a little shorter than highway 88 but I have never driven across this pass.
- Echo Summit and US 50 is open but will be a slow trip because of the maintenance that will be ongoing. 50 is kept open ear around except during and immediately after heavy snow events. It is succeptable to damage from storms as has been the case this year. At South Lake Tahoe, 50 connects to highway 89 (see the note above for Carson Pass.

All of these highways connect to US 395 which runs down the eastern Sierra and is kept open year around.

See you all there!

The "plan" is to trailer out, do WCR & a track day at Sonoma - that would be the ideal scenario. If a date (track day) can't be arranged I seriously have to consider just flying out with my son and renting a car - to trailer or not to trailer? It makes a 9 day difference in the schedule.

That same weekend at Sonoma is the vintage races, this is making it a tough choice for me, hmmmm.

Posted by: Andyrew Apr 15 2017, 05:52 PM

Final details coming together! Shirt design is being finalized and will be announced shortly. Awards dinner has been determined and we will have a 40 person cap in the room however we already have 35 people expected. Details to follow.

If your holding off due to the possibility of highway 120 being closed not allowing for entrance into Yosemite park we have a backup planned for that day, we will head north to south lake tahoe for a lunch. These are also fantastic roads with amazing views!

Dont wait! Register now!! Message me if you have any concerns.

If you end up flying, I'm bringing my son Nicho. He will be driving a 944. He's 19 so they should be able to relate. I'll be bringing up the rear on all drives. My much needed top-end rebuild is still pending so you don't want to be behind me...

Wanted to let everyone know that we'll be joined by my buddy, Larry, and his ultra cool drone! This thing takes unreal quality video and stills.
With a bit of planning, we can end up with a nice "documentary" of this event that includes some otherwise impossible shots.
Can't wait to see you all there!

I've got a hotel reservation but I am about 95% sure I can't make it this year. Haven't had much car time so my conversion is at a stand still. Won't be ready in time. Plus I am buying a house & my lease is up the end of May. So I've just got way to much going on. If something changes I'll try to make it but it is not very likely sad.gif . Only be the second WC R I have missed in quite a while

mgp4591 will be unable to start work as expected on 1 June 2017. He will be finishing his weekend jail sentence on 3 June 2017. Weekends after that will for the foreseeable future involve community service so there can be no overtime for now. Also, please remove all small furry animals from the building. We don't want to set him off. Thank you for your understanding in this sensitive matter.

Yours truly,

Also we were getting the sponsors finalized, but this is where we are at with the sponsors.

As for Routes. One day is dedicated to local drives which we have plenty of nice 1-2hr drives to the local lakes through some exceptionally windy roads that will jamb pack everyone and let them drive as much or as little as they want.

Another day is dedicated to going to Yosemite through the amazing highway 120. Or if that is closed then we will be heading to south lake Tahoe through highway 395.

Yes but you guys are both much more amazing than myself. I leave for Utah this week to watch my daughter graduate. Once I get back I have to find my new house. Then get my house all ready to move. Which would be no problem. IF it wasn't for my shop & all the 914 shit I have to move too. None of which leave's me any time to finish my new motor conversion. Which is mocked up in place & that is it. Believe me if there is a chance I would like nothing more than to come. I did say there was a 5% chance rolleyes.gif

Just curious; will summer tires be OK for the expected temps? I just looked at the Mammoth Lakes forecast and the nighttime lows are expected to be 33 and highs in the upper 50s. Will we be driving to areas considerably higher/colder than Mammoth Lakes?

Posted by: Andyrew May 7 2017, 04:01 PM

Summer tires should be fine for the roads were taking. Its not going to snow but there might be slush on 108 if they get to plow it.

Ill be on summer tires and so will most other people.

Thanks Andyrew-being from Phoenix I use summer tires all year but just discovered I have to buy(at least) 2 tires before WCR so it got me thinking.

Tony, that is awesome! The plasma table is pretty neat but there's a coldness to the parts it makes. There's something about "handmade" that to me just oozes love.

Guests, Friday we will have our "Long" drive. We have two options.

1. Drive up to South Lake Tahoe: Its a beautiful drive and a fantastic destination which most might want to spend all day at. Lunch options will be either a packed lunch (provided) or one of the many great eateries.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/South+Lake+Tahoe,+California/Mammoth+Mountain+Ski+Area,+10001+Minaret+Rd,+Mammoth+Lakes,+CA+93546/@38.1382065,-120.7717432,9z/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x80998589eea54fe1:0xdd1b2f46fb23918e!2m2!1d-119.9771868!2d38.939926!1m5!1m1!1s0x80960d4ed49fd3d1:0xda9c3289d175614!2m2!1d-119.036807!2d37.6508758

2. Drive South to Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest: Incredibly twisty road with a great view. We'll have a packed lunch at the lodge and those that want to head back can and those that want to keep driving can as well. Great roads.

Saturday will be local short drives to enjoy the local lakes and park roads as well as activities and a show and shine with the awards dinner to follow afterwards.

Bristlecone pines for me.....I hear it is a very rough and possibly dirt road. Maybe Death Valley should be an option? Driving to another city sounds eh? to me.

South ...

I would love to join everyone!

Gotta go to a memorial ... one of those once in a lifetime kind of things sad.gif

Posted by: Dtjaden May 25 2017, 09:47 PM

REVISED: my wife votes for south which means that I also do. HWHL

Am clearly a minority opinion but having driven both north and south from Mammoth including 395 to CA 168 and on to Nevada. The south route suggested is "boring" compared to a north route of 395 to CA 89 to South Lake Tahoe. Also many great restaurant choices in South Lake.

I've got a question to anyone that lives in or around the mammoth lakes area? I need to drive from Mammoth Lakes, our hotel to Hayward California.. planed on leaving after the banquet, Map says I need to go north around the mountain.
I need to do this drive after the banquet I expect it to be five to six hour drive what kind of Roads? what kind of conditions? anything I should know?

North on 395 to 80? Peice of cake. Some road construction delay on 80 in 3-4 different spots. You can avoid that by going the slow but scenic hwy50 route and rejoin 80 in Sacramento. Roads are dry though there is plenty of snow off the side of the road.

Posted by: Cracker May 26 2017, 05:42 AM

Please consider whichever route has larger mountains (and especially) is green-er (whether that is the Northern or Southern routes)...

I am going to have my eyeballs full of "desert and dry" landscape for the last 2.5 days of travel (I am not a fan of desert/dry landscapes - I am a Southeasterner!).

Whichever route avoids seeing more of it - it would be appreciated.

You have a few choices:
Shortest - us395 to ca89 to ca88 to i5 to i580 - 7+ hours
Easier - us385 in Gardnerville, NV cut over to ca88 to ca89 to us50 to i5 to i580 - 6 1/2+ hours
Easiest- us395 to i80 to i680 - 7+ hours

Since I am flat towing my car I will be taking the Easier route above to Mammoth. Undecided about the drive back on Tuesday.

Heres my plan. Open for interpretation. I spoke to the park rangers to get the skinny on the road conditions and Devilspostpile is closed sad.gif as well as the small lakes in mammoth beyond Twin Lakes. So this is what they reccomended. NOTE: Ancient Bristlecone is at 10k feet, there is no snow on the road beyond where were going, but carb cars will probably have an issue. I have 5 seats in my Fiesta and I can comfortably take an extra 2 people for a ride they are not likely to forget.

Friday: Drive to Ancient Bristlecone. We leave around 9:30ish Get there around 11:30-noon and have a picnic lunch (Provided). Spend about an hour or so there taking in the area, sights, maybe the road some more and head back. Afternoon is spent in the hotel lot with maybe some games and chit chat, then everyone breaks for dinner (Or you can join me at probably the Mammoth Brewing Company.)

Saturday: Morning is show and shine, everyone grabs a early lunch and we head out around noon-12:30. We'll take some group photos on Brenton Crossing road as there is a cascade of mountains all around us on that road. Drive through the hotsprings and the pine forest to Mono lake where we will take a break to soak in the sites, then for those that need to the Chevron in Lee Vining for gas and a drive through June Lake loop on our way back to the hotel. Everyone takes a little break then the awards dinner (Provided) in the hotel.

Sometimes the June lake loop is closed on the North end. If so we can go down and back from the South entrance.

Not sure about the other roads but I will try to verify.

Having longstanding issues. I havent been able to fix a warm start issue for a solid 6 months. It will crank and crank, but not fire. Every time I replace the crank position sensor it works fine once then the next day no. All started when I was trying to optimize my cooling system. Not only that my steering system is fubbarded (U joints binding) and my brakes lock up the right front.

Besides I have a shit ton of stuff im brining. The back of the fiesta will be fuuuuull.

We can go for a ride in the Fiesta, I promise you it will not dissapoint smile.gif

I'll let everyone know, but they made up some signs for us so it'll be clear.

All parking that I can see is in open sky.

Those are also reasons to love it. The Sierras are awesome. Can't get awesome without variables. beerchug.gif

Only dirt road I saw was about 1/4 of a mile to get to the front of Mono lake. Now bumpy road I cant comment on. I bet we will get a few bumpy roads and maybe even the first park road drive is bumpy and we have to slow our pace.

If anything gets bad then well turn around and have an adventure smile.gif

Weather shows no rain or snow and clear skys with highs of mid 70s all weekend.

I made it back to Phoenix. Took 12 hours, 115 lbs of ice and 123 lbs of fuel. The B-Kool uses a lot of ice but at least 250 miles of my drive were 105+F and I was very comfortable. Many thanks to Andy and his helpers for hosting this outstanding event. Plus a thumbs up to 914Rubber Tangerine Racing PMB sierra Madre and all the other World vendors who donated goodies and support. Chris set the friggin bar higher than anyone can ever exceed with his generous and way cool metal work trophies and awards. It was great seeing old friends and making new ones.
Finally thanks to Sir Andy for starting the best online community.
