This is the Build-Off Challenge contest thread, where Challengers will post their monthly updates on their builds.
EDIT: Please introduce yourself. Or, if your a procrastinator (like me, so no judgment), post a placeholder below. It seems to be the thing to do. Intros are due next Sunday so we can move on.
People can enter multiple years in a row? (I don't care either way, the question just popped.)
edit: Never mind. I'm looking forward to each one!
Hmmm, I could use a new welding jacket...
I quit!
(Kidding! )
OK, time to get get serious. This is called a "Challenge", after all.
About me:
Born in 1958, married, no kids, one cat. My wife (Lori) and I are avid cyclists and have been riding a tandem road bike for almost 30 years.
My dad was a car guy but mostly just obsessed with them, didn't do much of his own work. But I did grow up with a TR3 and a 356 coupe.
Had too many cars over the years. The air cooled highlights include:
- '60 VW that I made into a BajaBug (my first car!)
- a few Karmann Ghias
- many VW buses (including a '63 25 window sunroof!)
- 5 914s
- '74 911
I've bounced around on a ton of "interesting" project cars but always wanted to build a street/track day 914 V8 so that's what my Build-Off Challenge car will be. I landed on this '75 as it's a less desirable year. Plus it was already rusty and need significant surgery anyway. So, here we go!
Goals for this car:
- rust repair
- under body refresh
- chassis stiffening
- zippidy do-dah suspension and brakes
- GT flares
- center mount e-brake handle
- LS3/Boxster 6 speed conversion
- interior updates and refresh
- whatever other interesting mods I can think up and fit in to the time frame!
Extra Credit if I get the exterior painted.

Thanks for the opportunity to play and here's wishing everyone safely and successfully meets their Build-Off Challenge goals!

3d914 - 914-SHO build
About me: Married to a wonderful wife, lots of kids (boys & girls) - the last two working their way out onto their own, cats, horses, fish, etc. OK, let's talk about cars.
My dad was always a big car nut. He worked his ass off, sometimes at multiple jobs, to support a large family. I recall for many years we had a single car and it was usually a wagon of some sort. I remember how thrilled my dad was when he was able to afford a second car that he used for commuting to work. I especially remember a project car - a Keiser Manhattan that was in great running condition he was able to buy and enjoy.
Admittedly I really didn't appreciate cars for many years, even after owning my first 914. They were more of a status thing then something to understand, even though I was interested in automotive design. It wasn't until I was involved in raising my own young family that I got the 914 bug again and realized there was no way I could afford this unless I was willing to do everything myself. That's when everything changed - and I'm glad it did.
As I went through every piece of my second 914, rebuilding it, I began to realize how ignorant & foolish I was about cars. Ignorant because I didn't understand them on a deeper level and foolish because I thought there was bragging rights in what one owned. There was no challenge in owning even the most expensive cars - it's all a matter of priorities - what ones willing to give up to have this thing.
The real challenge became - what does it take to learn to do the work necessary to turn a derelict into a diamond? Now that became my challenge.
This build is my first real opportunity to dig into areas that were always a challenge in the past; metal-work, welding, fabrication, extensive body-work, and custom design. My previous three 914s were mostly stock, except for the custome fuel injection I built and ran on my last 2.0L. Even when this one is finished I plan to continue to add other custom touches; push-button door latches, A/C, maybe even a soft-top or two-piece targa top. The two main design challenges are the SHO motor itself and the engine-bay cooling system. Even if the cooling system doesn't work as planned I have another custom (never been tried) approach in my back pocket.
My Goals for this year: Here's the outline of work for the next 50-some weeks.
Rear Trunk
No wonder people say I am intimidating.
Little about me.
I am married to my wonderful wife of years. I have two great children, and I have a job as a CIO. That job leaves little time for things like cars, I have a very understanding wife, who lets me play a few days each week to keep my sanity.
I have always been a gear head. Some of my fondest memories from childhood happened in cars. Rides with my father in his Lotus Elan, I could only see the trees and phone poles fly by. Never paying for parking, parking gates where taller than the Lotus. Dd sold the Lotus to finance the building of his house.
He got his 914-6 in 1976 from a Repo Auction. It was also torn down in 1976 due to a chain tensioner issue, and never made it back together. We did tons of father son projects and I keep him away from the 914-6. I did used to sit it it and make vrrrm Vrrrm noises while he worked on it.
Lots of cars came and went for me.
He helped me build a CJ-5 - did not like the Jeep, but good for cutting mechanical teeth on.
Next up was a Karmann Ghia, stock on the outside, go fast goodies underneath. Only thing you might notice was the 5.5x15s off a 914 parts car. I also used the rear disc brakes off the 914, poly bushings, etc.... Dad would drive it while I was at college.
In 1993 we purchased the car I am building. He was there to help us build the house, and he gave me the 914 bug.
So that brings us to today.
Goals:
GOALS:
Chassis Work and Welding Done. Yes I actually plan to finish welding the car. I calculate another 75 pounds of welding wire will be used. And most likely another 40 pounds of TIG filler.
Install the Engine
Get it running / driving
Finish body metal work
Make it one Color
Drive to Okteenerfest 2017
Lose 50 pounds from the car in the form of the driver. Yep, I am adding a personnel weight lose goal to the challenge. I will be at or below 208 pounds and at or below an 18% body fat ratio. By the end of the Challenge!
Here is how it sat as the start on October 16th, 2016.
Blue car mounted on the wall in the pictures was the second car I built with my father. Soapbox Derby car. It was made with bulk heads, and then thin strips of redwood stretched over the bulkheads to give it's shape. Fiberglass was applied over that. Inside the car was the first active suspension built into a soap box car. We tied the axles together via spring steel. Very innovative design. I placed second that year, after the winner ran into me. Bent an axle. Should have protested, rules would have allowed me to take their parts to fix my car. I did not think that was right happens in racing.

Im going to continue the build, and entered the 2017 Build-Off Part Deux Challange.
About Me:
My history with the 914 started in 1976, after a friend sold me his 70 and away I went. I learned to do my own work, I always was interested in how things were done, and the reward of my own work, as I learn, over time.
In the late 70’s and in the 80’s I owned multiple cars and always had one or two running.
Now wonderful wife, 2 grown sons. Yet I have always found time, and just a few steps away, to visit the garage and play with the cars. I have owned a dozen or so, over the years. Really want to finish out this car completely and enjoy it, and drive it again to Okteenerfest
Thank you to all that followed and helped with the 2016 Build of this car. Here we go again, just a bit on the lighter side.

PROJECT 2.4
ABOUT ME: Married to my high school sweetheart for 26 years. 2 awesome kids, boy & girl. 1 in college & 1 in high school. I work as an RN in a PACU Unit (recovery room) for the past 20 years. Prior to that for 10 years as a Radiologic Technologist (x-ray & CAT Scan).
My 914 has been an important part of my life. My Dad put down the down payment for it and surprised me with it.
It was parked in my family's garage when I came home from school 30 years ago! I took over the payments and have maintained it ever since. Lots of Sunday drives with my wife as well as the kids, autocrosses and a few track events. Always learning l as I go along.
BUILD GOALS: Repair rusted left longitudinal.
Replace left sill and door jamb.
Remove rear quarter panel for better access for repairs.
Replace lower left inner firewall.
Repair left front & rear jack donuts.
Remove 4 cylinder engine mounts.
Install 2.4 six cylinder engine and all that goes with it!
INCLUDING: 911 front struts, Front aluminum "S" calipers. (Thanks Mepstein)
Rear GT brakes (Ferrari 308 a.t.e.) rebuilt by PMB
Original oil tank (Thanks TC) lines, etc
Finish all that up with a respray of left rear quarter panel, firewall, rear trunk lid and sail panels and Targa bar. I will be leaning on my pal Dave (914Dave) for help with
the painting and some mechanical assistance.
I've already replaced all the gaskets on my Zenith carbs. Changed the cap, rotor,& wires &
Painted the six engine tins. Need to adjust valves.
Also will install a new carpet set courtesy 914rubber (thanks Mark)
Prepping to install the carpets led to my discovery of the perforated
left longitudinal!
I also have a NOS dash to install as well as a center deposit box.
Well that's it for now. Pretty simple compared to some of these other builds.
You fellas have some fantastic fabrication skills and knowledge.
Good luck to all.
Cheers,Dion
I have wanted a 914, any 914 since I was 12 years old when my father’s friend built a GT clone race car. The only time I've ridden in a 914 was when he came off track and let me sit, wedged in between the roll bars, as he went through the paddock. After thirty years of reading about them, drawing pictures, saving pictures, bookmarking sites and generally lusting after this car I picked up my own. It wasn't the 74 2.0 with the appearance group I had decided was the best choice and it wasn't running so I couldn't get immediate joy of ownership from it but it was local and looked to be in the sweet spot between cost and condition. That is until I got it home. It appears the PO must have had a whole box of stainless self-tapping screws since everything is held in place (and then some) with the same size screw. He also didn't know how to weld but by the look of it liked to play with fiberglass and metal tape. All in all, I think I'm still in decent shape considering some of the pictures I've seen. I have two young boys and a daughter that are eager to pitch in and I am looking forward to teaching them (or learning with them) some mechanical skills and the joys of bringing something worthwhile back to life. Some background information on myself. Aside from the aforementioned children I have a wonderful wife, a trusty dog, grumpy cat and two guinea pigs. I am an automotive designer and have been around car fabrication my whole career but have very little hands on experience. Basically, I know what it should look like and what is required but can't always execute or don't have the required tools to do it myself. That said I have friends and beer money so I might be leaning on the 'buddy help' contingency in the rules. I also work in 'Race City USA' so if you can't get it fabricated here then then there is no hope.
My goals are
I would like to have a really clean driver as close to original as possible with some custom touches.
Motor
Toss out the 4" over bored jugs and build a slightly hotter than stock 2.0 that will be reliable. Stick with the Twin Weber set up an pick a good cam
Chassis
Mortgage house and open up line of credit with Restoration Design
Replace semi non-existent outer firewall
Replace engine skirt sheet metal
Install correct battery tray
Longs look to be good with the 'screwdriver doesn't penetrate them' test but will know better once we get the firewall out
Repair and or replace floor
remove Ace Hardware gate hinges PO used for seat brackets with correct seat parts. Because I don't want my cause of death to be noted as "Ace Hardware seat bracket failure"
Rebuild brakes
Body
Strip, repair, paint back to original Light Ivory. I didn't want a 76 and I never dreamt about having a white 914 but I really don't want a color change car with back dated bumpers so here we are.
Since all the seals are cracked or over sprayed I am going to replace these.
Interior
All new rubber
Reupholster seats.
Eventually I would like new everything but realistically the mechanical and bodywork are going to consume the majority of my time and resources.
Finally updating my first entry...nasty cold that's taken out my close family the last 4+ weeks.
A bit about me/car:
I bought this car shortly after getting out of college, Dec 2000!!! (JMU, hence my user name).
It was my first manual transmission car, and I learned how to drive stick on it. I had a friend give it a once-over in Atlanta after sending him an OLD "what to look for" list. Took a chance and flew down, bought it and drove it back to the DC area.
My goals are to drive my car before my 10 year wedding anniversary! The last time it was driven any distance was as my getaway car at my marriage 9 years ago. I made a vow to my wife to get the car converted, fixed up, and running by our 10th in late Sept.
More details and pics to come when I open my stand-alone posting...again when I feel better.
Motor
Was originally a 1.7, was a carb'd cam'd 2.0/4 when I bought it. Ran great and no issues, but the /6 bug bit me.
I got a core 2.7 911 engine with CIS that I plan to:
- Install SC-grind cams
- Swap CIS for a good set of webber 40s
- Have the top end seals etc done
- fingers crossed that's all it needs!!!
Interior
- New rubber
- New door cards
- New carpet with some custom touches if it goes as planned
- Might do a new dash, or keep my dash cover...not sure yet until the other stuff is nice and new.
- Updated gauges: triple gauge and either convert 911 tach or use tach-adapt for my stock one.
- New sound system, either hidden or retro-look.
- Install Engman driver and passenger foot rests.
Chassis
- Fix any rust issues on the car....my car is quite solid, but you never know till you start digging with a screwdriver/pick
- Install /6 conversion engine mount
- Install Engman chassis stiffening kit
- Get bumpers re-chromed
- New SS fuel lines
- Clean and refinish gas tank if needed
Body
- Repaint body in Ravenna Green. I could never change the color, it's perfectly 70s!!!
- Install full LED lighting (turn signals F/R, 3rd brake light, etc)
- Custom touches like removing side warts, windshield washer setup, antenna location. This should clean up the lines just a little bit.
Place holder for me as well. I am travelling alot for work now but should be able to get everything posted this weekend.
Placeholder.
Place holder
Will post details and pics at weekend
About me:
Hi everyone, my name is James. I’m 28 and have owned this car for the last 15 years. I bought when I was 13 as a basket case, restored to stock over the next 5.5 years (engine rebuild, extensive rust repair, paint, etc. all in my parent’s garage), and then drove daily for ~3.5 years of undergrad. The heat never really worked well so it was pretty cold in the winter but my friends and I had a lot of great times with it, especially in the snow with a trusty set of Blizzaks! We’re pretty sure everyone on campus knew the loud, little, yellow car that some guy drove like a maniac!
Because of school, work, racecars, and other peoples’ cars I really neglected my own car for those years and problems started cropping back up. I parked it after graduating and getting a full time job with the intention of fixing the little problems. Life got in the way, and somehow I went from 22 to 28 without the car moving from its garage bay.
I don’t have too much time to work since I’m in the home stretch of my engineering PhD (I study low-emissions combustors for aerospace applications using advanced laser diagnostics—it sounds cooler than it actually is, don’t worry…), but now seems like the right time to finish ‘er up. It’d be really nice to be able to drive home from my defense.
My goals are pretty aggressive and while I’ve started working there is still a ton left to do. The most challenging pieces are going to be the fully custom bits since many of them still require a lot of engineering before the fabrication.
Goals:
Chassis: Finish rust repair, Get into epoxy primer
Suspension (Front): Convert to 911SC front suspension, raise spindles, correct bumpsteer, build/install custom sway bar, install new consumables (bushings, etc.)
Suspension (Rear): Finish custom raised pickup/monoball rear suspension
Brakes: Change to 911 calipers, rebuild calipers, replace consumables (rotors, pads, etc.)
Engine/Transmission: Install EJ255 motor with 2WD converted Subaru transmission, design/build cooling system/hydraulic clutch/cable shift
Electronics (Chassis): Design new chassis harness and rewire entire chassis with InifnityBox multiplex wiring system (distributed solid state power controls)
Electronics (Engine): Design new engine harness and install aftermarket Syvecs S8 engine control unit

Post 38 is the starting point for the build-off challenge...
Mmmmm, put myself forward again , for better or worse I really need to get this finished .........
October Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
1. Hell hole and long repaired with no impact to the door gaps/chassis measurements!
2. Chassis stiffening parts fab:
Procured, trimmed and fit a custom set of inner long stiffeners
Fabbed the front and rear roll hoops, door bars and door bar supports, custom upper firewall support beam and lower firewall cross member (do I at least get style points for roll bending the curves in the "through the firewall" rear hoop and firewall support? )
CHALLENGES
I'm super paranoid about messing up the chassis while welding and didn't enjoy slicing out that big a piece of the inner long. I'd actually repaired that area earlier but believed I could do a better job. I put the car on the rotisserie and modified the Tangerine Racing door braces so I could keep the doors on and check door gaps throughout the repair.
I did my best to follow the guidance I pick up in threads by Jeff Hail (how to do the sleeves) to Rick 918-S (guidance on placement of the door brace update). It all paid off and the gaps and other chassis measurements are spot on.
VENDORS
Tangerine Racing: 5 of 5 stars rating for the door braces and mods to my trailing arms, including their 911 ebrake adapter kit. Also got their raised rear pick up and shock tower kit.
Restoration Design: 5 of 5 star rating for the rear floor, which I will use, and a bunch of other parts that I've decided I won't need and will be selling. Yep, even this early on, I'm into the "my loss, your gain" model... Let's hope that doesn't continue!

October Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=220712&st=260
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
1. Might be close to being done with the rear trunk floor.
2. Suspension items all test fit and pieces made to adjust parts and spacing.
3. New pedal box is being built
CHALLENGES
Found that one of my two suspension ears is off. Need to check the rest of the chassis to make sure it is square to the pickup points. My own apprehension about cutting up the car. And changing my mind on parts and design features. Made lots of progress just by saying F'IT! and jumping in there and doing. Running out of welding supplies on a Sunday, 1st world problems.
VENDORS
Tangerine Racing: 11 of 10 stars rating!!! Love Chris' work, yes his stuff goes to 11!
Using his Door bracing, and have the new plate to use for when I get to door fitting.
Work on the rear arms was 911 e-brakes, and backers, re-enforced, and powder coated.
Rear suspension raising 2"
Front camber plates
Front spindles raised on my Bone struts All of Chris' service where purchased back in June of 2016, I just now getting to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Rebel Racing 9 out of 10, nit picking, never got a tracking number.
I had these items stored away, but the brake kits are awesome, every thing fit great, and they look so
Paragon Products 10 out of 10
New rear shocks for my 914 Koni great communication through the whole process
Other notable notes:
Chris aka Tygaboy for posting this great format that I so intentionally stole
October Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=227430
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1. Took a picture of me and cleaned off the car (lame, I know and I still need a higher-quality one). It had ~ 2 years of storage on top of it which is all gone now
2. Added sway bar into suspension model.
3. Started engine disassembly. Removed and disassembled intake manifold. Started gutting TGVs (tumble generating valves).
CHALLENGES
Time! October/November are tough time months since most of the conference deadlines for me are in December.
VENDORS
None this month...
Don't forget to post updates for October. Since it is halloween, and we just started the Challenge two weeks ago, we aren't going to hold anybody to having to post their first update before November 1st. But, let's get them posted this week, and we will start official update deadlines for November.
OK, an introduction is in order:
This is a 1976 914 that is/was originally ivory white.
Link to build thread:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=288393&view=findpost&p=2397587
My goals are:
- complete the body prep, strip the underside, repaint and undercoat.
- upgrade the front suspension to 911 5 lug
- upgrade the rear to 5 lug and 911 parking brakes
- install 3.2 from '88 911
- reinstall original interior; I'll tackle a new interior later
- dream of other upgrades and make a very long list
About me:
Name- Michael Todd
I live in Southwestern Virginia and am married with one daughter in college, and a son and daughter in high school. This is my first 914; I've been planning this project for the last 15 years after I sold my first Porsche, a 1969 912 ( wish I still had it). I've debated between an all original 2.0 and a GT tribute settling on the latter. I purchased the car late last year with metal flares installed, though they needed a lot of work to correct the installation before the real fun could start. I'm looking forward to the work to come, and especially to driving the GT next fall through the Virginia mountains.
I'll post a few progress pics in a day or two; I'm expecting rapid change over the next few months.

3d914 - 914 SHO Build / October Update
Build Thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=82421&st=480
Accomplishments:
Working mostly in the Rear Trunk and Body Panel areas. The air box has been mocked up in cardboard and test fit. I now have the dimensions to begin the framework design that support the air box. I've decided to combine the hinge framework with the air box framework, and already started the design work. I have a metal supplier in Tucson who will cut the framework pieces for me from the CAD data - which will be faster than me attempting it by hand.
Rear firewall section is welded in. It's now ready for primer and seam sealer. Just have to wait till I get design work done and pieces ordered.
Started the cleanup in both rear quarters and flares to get the cut-out panels back in. Got the right side panel clamped in- ready for welding. The left side flare has been cleaned and just waiting for panel cement. I'll be fitting and cutting the left side patch panel this week.
Challenges:
Figuring out the modifications needed for the Mini hinges. Found a used set on ebay and was able to get dimensions off them. I can even retain the mounting bracket. Once I got the dimensions in CAD I was able to verify the movement of the trunk and the hinge to ensure no interference.
Vendor support this month: None

2017 Build-Off Challenge
Build-Off Part Deux
October Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772&st=120# (takes you to pg:6)
2017 Build progress :
Starting with the interior. The goal here is, improve the sound system, and add some comfort, plus a few small things along the way like the new fuse panel, sound padding, and dash layout. In addition I have never taken care of the floor pan. I removed the tar padding, and worked on the dash a bit.
Overall I want to keep it "clean" less is more. I have loved the simple dash design from the first time I saw it. That was a '70 basic, not even a fog lamp switch.
Removed some Plasti-dip, peel off paint.
Unexpected challenges:
Removing Plasti-Dip from primed parts of the body work, little bit at a time.
I have removed this material before, and a heat gun works best. warm it up, and scrape it off. In some spots it will lift off like a sheet. In others it may pop up due to rust. I found that this time it took a lot of effort to remove. It get tougher with age, the tar not me. : ) Some rust spots, and seems to repair. More surface rust then I thought would be there. This will pay off on my satisfaction meter when done.
I also found that with the radio, and glove box removed, theres a lot of space there. I would like to keep the sub, but not the center console. Built a trail foam board box. More to come on this.
Vendors:
Not this month, but carpet from 914 rubber is on my mind.
Progress Pictures:
Heres a few shots. See the Build link for more, and the whole story. Thanks for the look.

Build Thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=297659
The theme for October was to inventory my new purchase, familiarize myself with the breed and make a loose plan. I wasn't initially going to do the build challenge thinking that I didn't want to rush or make hasty decisions based on a contest. Giving it more thought I figured I'm going to be doing the work anyway and since there will be a captive audience I'm bound to get more input and it just sounds like fun.
Challenges
So far has been educating myself on all aspects of the car and motor which has been rewarding but mentally strenuous bordering on information overload. Another challenge is space. I needed to be more efficient with storage of bikes, sports equipment etc. in a single car garage.
Progress
Take motor down to short block
Begin tear down to body-in-white
Build a 8'X2' workbench with a lower shelf to hold 914 related stuff
Organize the shop
Learn about the car
Identify vendors
Start a shopping list
Get everything in order for the challenge (picture folder, 914-world login)
Vendors
Lowes
The craftsmanship of this job is just impeccable.

October Update
Challenges
Sick Sick Sick: Biggest challenge thus far is me and my family have been sick as dogs for the past 4+ weeks. I'm starting week 3 and my wife and 2YO have been sick for 4-5 week. Makes working on a car project take a back seat for a bit.
But we were able to do a little engine work to get it ready to take to my builder friend.
Progress
- I was able to get the CIS system off the donor motor, with the help of my little one.
- I got the following over to my engine/trans builder friend to give it a once over and start assessing the damage ($$$).
o - 2.7 Engine
o - 901 side-shift transmission - to asses the condition if it can handle a /6
o - Webber 40 cabs, manifolds, airbox
o - 3-bearing SC grind cams from Elgin

o - early /6 flywheel for conversion
- Basically I sent some stuff off to have done and hope it won't break the budget already
- Bought some stuff....I'm really good at that
o - Bought new door cards from 914 rubber
o - Put my deposit on the new 914/6 heat exchangers being made by mb911
o - Much more buying and sorting of stuff already bought to come
Vendors
- 914 rubber has been great as always
- mb911 has been great thus far, his progress on the heater boxes is great!

Ok. So a tardy pic from October & a current one. Work and family
duty didn't give me much time in garage this past weekend.
Started removing welds on sail and left rear quarter panel.
I did receive parts from Restoration Design last week
as I posted in my "2.4 project thread"
Removed boot lid for better access. It needs a respray anyway.
Fair warning if ya still have torsion bars connected and you remove that rear boot lid.
Those hinges have plenty of force to move without weight on them. And can do bodily harm. Don't ask how I found out. Don't do things when your tired.
I zip tied them in closed position.

Everything's out. Battery tray area & hell hole are just fine.

Some great work taking place already on this 2017 Challenge. I'll certainly watch with anticipation of who'll be next years winner.
Good luck guy's
Regards
Darren
Steve, just a quick bump....it's November now and I still haven't had my 2016 Challengers Tee shirt, despite asking numerous times now????
Well nothing has happened and no recent pictures of the car I will post later, sorry I have been in England visiting me mum so have had no time
What am I going to do when I finally get my act together?
Install 2,2 six
Electrics for engine convertion
Make oil tank.
Make engine tins
Make steel roof
Make body reinforcements
Make heat exchanger boxes around headers
Install flares if I can afford it
So far got Mad dog engine mount and MSN headers, also a TIG welder but I need to practice. I plan to make the oil tank from aluminium so the TIG is ACDC its second hand unit without too many frills but it works good
I am trying to sell my engine its still in the car so I can show and start it if I ever get a buyer. This is holding me up a bit.
The roof is a big job, if anyone has some good pics or advice on making the roof then please get in touch. I have looked at Chris Foleys steel roof pics on FB, like I said its a big job for someone with my skill level but I am going to do (attempt) it. This will mean investing in an English wheel?
I will start on the roof as I can do this with the engine in.
I should mention that I have already done a 5 lug and 911 handbrake conversion, backdated bumpers the car is a 76, Installed GT6 front calipers and 911 rear callipers vented discs and 19mm MS. I dont think there's to much rust as I have allready done repairs and the car was in good condition, but time will tell.
Wish me luck
Ocotober 2016 Update:
Link to my build: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=206845
Accomplishments:
Well I finished reinforcing the longs with my truss design. I also added the rear firewall truss connecting the two truss longs at the rear firewall. This will give me greatly increased torsional rigidity.
Goal for November:
Complete tube frame and install 996 suspension. Extending the wheelbase BTW.

Ok. Finally an intro
Here is the crew. Many of you know Hugh from Okteenerfest. Gretta is my girl. She likes to help on the car also, but we have not done much lately. Amy (wife) took the picture.
My car is a 74 2l 4 cylinder. Marathon Blue Metallic
We live in Marion NC not far from Banner Elk where Okteenerfest was for the last two years.
Unfortunately I was unable to finish in the last challenge, but if I can only get past this quarter panel problem, I feel like I can make some real progress. I have just about everything to do to my car. I have already done a lot of the metal work, but I still have to finish the seat mount install, fix a small rust hole, trunk lid hinge points and pass rear quarter panel. Then all I have left is everything else! I plan to get the car stripped, then paint it myself, recondition/replace everything and install it. The motor has been mostly built for about 10 years and on an engine stand. I still need to sort out a transmission, all the suspension bits, brakes....
October update:
I have not done anything this month, at least nothing that you can see. But Have already started for November!
November update:
As I posted on my build thread, I've removed the rear quarter. Well the hits keep coming... removed some of the undercoat on susp. console. Surprise! A hole
It is very satisfying however to know that once all this bodywork
is addressed there are never anymore questions about its integrity. I always knew
the left side of the car was questionable. As a novice to this car hobby I dropped
some serious $ having the right long. & battery tray, etc. taken care of. It was done
correctly by a pro resto shop. No worries on that side.
So it's up to me to shore up this left side. So basically not to bore any more
most of the next weeks is cutting and grinding. Nothing glamorous or innovative.
I did however receive some pretty trinkets from PMB!
Thanks Eric & co.!

Ok, so I'm a late entrant to the build off...
About Me
This is my 4th 914, its a 1975, I also currently own a 73 2.0 that's a great driver. The 75 has been a project for too long. A lot of the hard stuff is done and it's pretty far along, but I need to get it over the hump. Since I'm getting a late start I haven't worked on the car since the build off launched. But, my first order of business will be finishing the Engman long kit I've started to install.

Build-Off Part Deux
November Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772&st=120#
2017 Build progress :
Well on the floor got all the tar off, and found more decay. Imagine that! The pedals were functioning fine, but was sure there could be a concern under there. After removing the under panel to access the pedal mount nuts, and the linkages, and two interior floor mount nuts. Surprise, rust and junk. Ill rebuild the pedal cluster later, but finished the floor, and patched or repaired the damaged spots. Also rust inhibitor on the surface spots. Primer done, and the proper sealer, and Im ready for some sound deadining material next.
Unexpected challenges:
Still removing Plasti-Dip from primed parts of the body work, little bit at a time.
Vendors:
Local hardware, and off my shelf.
Progress Pictures:
Heres a few shots. See the Build link for more, and the whole story. Thanks for the look.
November update:
Welding the pass rear quarter on.
Also started to clean up the suspension....
Found a few issues:
No professional help (God knows I need it)
No vendors yet, but getting close!
November Update:
Build thread: All the details and extras are here, part Duex starts on Post 263
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
1. Started working on the front spoiler
2. started working on front radiator mounts, fuel tank, and A/C installation.
3. Started fitting the front Tangerine Camber plates and mounts.
CHALLENGES
Trying not to rework everything several times. Seems like I am cursed by the goods. Instead of a boulder, I redo 914 fabrication. Truck keeps breaking down, have not made ti to the gas supplier to pick my welding gas cylinders.

Custom long stiffeners installed!
2. Lower fire wall support pads fabbed and installed.
3. Carbon fiber long cover blanks fabbed
4. drive line test fit in prep to relocate it 1+ inch forward
CHALLENGES
Time. Or lack thereof... I lost a week to recovery from skin cancer surgery. Then there was Thanksgiving. Not that I'm complaining about time with family! Just that I didn't get as much done as planned.
There were no real build challenges, just a lot of tedious fitting and plug welding.
In general, as with most projects, each step seems to take 30% - 50% more time than I expect. And it doesn't help that I've changed my mind about a few things. This means I spend time designing and fabbing only to toss it. Again, no complaints. It's actually a part of the process that I enjoy - it's just not efficient.
It really drives home the "Don't quit your day job." comment!

I got the case split to take inventory of what I have and create a list of what I need to get it built back up. One thing I found when I removed the brand new bearing that had been installed was that the hole for the dowel was elongated and will need to be addressed. I measured the bore on the case to make sure that it hadn't been bored but it appears to be factory spec.
As mentioned before, the floor and rails had glass mat along the perimeter which pretty much only meant that it was covering something nasty. The question was how bad was it.... well, I know the answer to that now.
Before and after breaking away the glass. I'm fortunate that whomever did this did not prep the surface well so it came off in big chunks. It's luck that this didn't end with someones ass sliding along the road. One very poor weld was found in this repair which was a piece of angle iron tacked in one spot to bridge the gap between the inner firewall and floor. From what I can tell the rear pans are repro's (no tar, no access hole) The front are still original. Everything was buttoned together with a combination of... wait for it... rivets, tin, metal tape, duct tape and fiberglass. A petty good picture of this car's past life is coming into focus.
This picture of all the things that don't belong in the car is a perfect metaphor for what my brain feels like when I think of the huge hill that I am at the bottom of.
It's probably out of order but with a huge list of things to to I grabbed some low hanging fruit and got going on odd jobs that will need to be done at some point anyway. Cleaning up these parts is low risk, high reward and gives your spirits a bit of a boost after being neck deep in rust and fiberglass.
As she sits now.
November 2016 Update:
Link to my build http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=206845
Accomplishments:
Completed tying in the rear tube frame to the suspension jig. Cut out about 160 lbs of steel, Started to complete the front end
Hurdles:
The front strut assembly stuck out above the front hood by about 3 inches. Had to do some research to be able to lower the front struts and not negatively affect the suspension geometer.
Goal for December:
Complete the front end tube frame and install suspension.

Rudy - I just LOVE your build... Keep up the great progress!
[/quote]
Thanks Tygaboy! I'm enjoying yours as well. I'm stealing your carbon fiber cover for the longs. I'm going to leave my longs open since they are no longer being used to resist bending. Now they are being used to carry the shear forces from the floor diaphragm only.
November Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=227430
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1. Procured transmission from '12 WRX. Also pulled a bad center diff from an older WRX transmission for cutting/welding into a 2WD lockout so I can sell my good center diff.

So, for my 1 day late November posting I am much further behind than desired, though the turn of events may be beneficial after all. I had planned to have the project body mods completed, and the body in my garage by the first week of November. Unfortunately, it is still a 3hour drive away.
Planning, preparation, anticipation, and more planning have consumed my free time this month. A couple weeks ago my wife asked how I would be able to work in the garage with all of the 914 parts lying around; I jokingly responded saying the parts would be stored in the spare room, to which she said "good idea". After I recovered from the initial shock, I made sure to not discuss the issue any longer and proceeded to comply with her wishes. All parts are now comfortably resting in the house.
My second project was to find an air compressor for free or as close to free as possible. With "free" as the goal, I wasn't extremely picky. I found a little used, one stage, 60 gallon unit for $100. With the 220V line and other accessories, I spent around $250, but that's still cheap.
I think I'll be able to go get my project's body soon. I need to find a welder now; I'm thinking about a Lincoln, but I don't know anything about welders.
Oh yeah, I started cleaning up the BB exhaust that I removed from my 3.2 engine. I'll sell this soon.

November Update
Challenges
Still semi-sick, this flu/cold/plague just won't go away totally. Biggest challenge this month is finding time/energy to get serious work done, so I'm sticking with parts accumulation and organization
Progress
- I got good news from my engine/trans builder friend on the transmission. Said it's the best 901 transmission he's seen. But the previous builder used too much heat on the 2nd gear dog ring, so it wll only need the following to make it /6 stout:
o - new 2-5 gear synchro hub
o - billet intermediate plate
o - billit side cover
o - typical seals etc et
o - putting it back together
- The engine is still kind of a mystery, since it was sitting for so long. It was soaked in Marvel Mystery Oil for a week to see if we could get the leak-down test to look better. A bit better, but no dice.
o - ring sealing seems worse than valve sealing
o - will need new valve guides, could change sealing ability by tapping on the valves when under pressure
o - will have to pull the heads to see how the pistons and cylinders are.
Fingers crossed they aren't too bad and just need valve guides and rings...but we'll see You never really know what you have until you get in there, but we're going with an approach of tearing down only as much as needed. With these mag-case engines you don't want to rip it apart unless totally needed!
- I did get some wheel storage and parts storage racks built late in the month. This will really help me organize/inventory my parts accumulated over 9 years!
- Talked with ScottyB about getting a can of paint mixed up so I can paint the interior. Pictures will show why I need to paint it...for a good/worthwhile reason.
I really need to start my own build thread to add more details

3d914 - 914 SHO Build / December Update
Build Thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=82421&st=480
No major progress this month. Been working on kids' cars.
Now that I have an enclosed garage, I finally relocated the 914 where I can work on it at home.
Progress:
- Removed the front suspension
- Started stripping the bottom searching for shiny metall
Issues and Discoveries:
- Found up to a quarter inch of body filler in the passenger front wheel well. I've removed most of it, and so far haven't found why I was there.
- So far I have only found minor surface rust that can be removed with an abrasive disc. The fender flares added the the car had more surface rust on the back side than any other part of the car which is over 40 years old.
Plans for January:
- Remove the rear suspension
- Finish stripping the bottom to the metal
- Determine the best coating to use on the bottom. Thinking about using Picklex and Epoxy primer.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
1. Lower fire wall supports installed
2. Lower fire wall sheet metal fabbed
3. Sheet metal for closing in fire wall fabbed
4. Initial console design prototype complete
5. Relocated drive line forward ~1.5": modified engine mount and designed/built spacers
6. Trunk mods/reinforcements mocked up
CHALLENGES
Time. Or lack thereof... (I see a recurring theme)
Everything. Takes. Far. Longer. Than. I. Think. It. Will. (Another recurring theme)
Plus, I'm constantly distracted by "something else I want to do" to the car. I get started on something then look at another area of the car and start messing with it and the next thing I know, it's the end of the day.
This isn't helped by the fact that I have no plan. I get into working on something and come up with what I think will be some cool, new custom touch so it's a bit of "one step forward, .675 steps back". (did I mention I tend to be overly accurate and self-critical?)
With 1/4 of the available Challenge time now gone, I'm starting to think 9/14/17 may be an ambitious date to achieve my target goals. However, I will press on!!!
VENDORS
A shout out to Harbor Freight! I'd go broke without them and their value-priced angle grinders and cutoff wheels!

4. Finished design of from sway bar mounts and purchased all parts. Machining soon.
CHALLENGES
Time and now cold! I've been trying to get a bit more work time in every week and so far have been successful. It's getting too cold outside to spend much time in the unheated garage so I've been working on indoors things.

Made the final payment on my /6 heat exchangers to MB911, and in the process of buying more goodies from 914rubber.
Hope to have more updates in Jan
CHALLENGES
Nothing other than the lingers cold my family has had for 2+ months.
Heater in my garage crapped out, so I'll either get an HVAC guy out to look at it or go with some small electric room heaters I have sitting around.
VENDORS
MB911 - /6 heat exchangers are sooooo good looking, can't wait to get my hands on them.

Not a tremendous amount of progress, but some, with more on the horizon.
I got the fender welded on most of the way and lined up the hing points.
Next:
Blasting! Well OK I need to get some more gas and do a little welding, but I hope to have the car in primer by the end of January! Very exciting.
Vendors: PMB Performance!!!!! I was able to cash in my prize from Okteenerfest.

I am glad I participated in the challenge, can not wait to see the other projects come along.
January Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900
So, 1/3 of the Build Off Challenge time has passed. I look back on that time and it feels like I've barely done anything. What is Vegas saying about my odds of making the 9/14 date?
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
1. Final removal of trunk sheet metal
2. Boxed the ends of the longs to the suspension consoles
3. Fabricated suspension console cross braces (upper and lower), upper cross bar load pads and stiffening panel
4. Initiated design of console plates and rear transmission mount/stiffening bars.
CHALLENGES
It seems like everything I'm doing takes 2-4 time as long as I think it will. This isn't helped by the fact that most every part I make I end up making over again - either because I screw it up or I change my mind about the design.
I'm also frustrated by the fact that just when I think I can weld a part in and get on to the next thing, I realize there some other item that I'd have to do first. This car is like a jigsaw puzzle where I (think) I know what it's supposed to look like when it's done but I have to make each piece, allowing for all the other pieces (which I haven't even thought about) to fit!
And I love it!

3d914 - 914 SHO Build / January Update
Build Thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=82421&st=480
Accomplishments:
Very little progress. I did pick up a 40lb media blaster and began remaining paint removal (via soda balsting):
January 2017 Update.
Accomplishments:
Little progress again, though I continued work stripping the two front wheel wells.
The drivers side looks great, but the passenger side revealed the lies of a previous owner. Body filler was used to hide damage from what looks to have been a pretty hard hit. The frame was obviously straitened, but I'm paranoid now; should probably have the car checked on a frame machine.
Other than this, I have taken advantage of the "need" for more tools. Collected a few air tools, and finally bought a welder which I will need soon.
Challenges:
Having the right tools
Having time to use the tools
Controlling my anger after finding hidden damage
Plans:
Found a rotisserie that I can can convert to use on my 914. Free; salvaged old aircraft tooling. I'll get this going in February.
Vendors:
Lowe's for tools and welder
January Update:
Slow moving, still accumulating a lot of parts and NEED to get my garage heat fixed so I can grab some color-matched paint from Scotty to finish my interior before installing new parts.
Still have hope to get moving full speed when the weather/heat/family allow.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Got some parts and ordered more parts.
Got - MB911's 914/6 heat exchangers, they are soooo nice. Keeping them in a box to protect them until I am ready (hopefully in Sept)
Ordered - New carpets and fog light covers from 914Rubber via the group buy!
Ordered - New throttle linkage/cable/bellcrank from Rich Johnson (a914guy)
On GB List - Mark Henry's stainless bumper group buy. I really hope he gets back good samples.
CHALLENGES
My family and I still come down with cold symptoms every other week...I want winter over ASAP.
Heater being down is really a bummer and makes you not want to go out in the garage.
Got word on my engine....my wallet is going to take a huge hit:
Heads have issues and need to be machined along with new guides and valves. One cyl head will need to be either replaced or have a custom valve guide made to fit (see photos!). The cylinders are not as round as they once were so we're going to have to go with coating my stock alusil cyls with nickasil coating and some 9.5:1 pistons.
So I'll have to get a new cam to take advantage of the better flowing pistons with valve releifs.
It's going to be $$$$$, but it's going to be sooo good when done (that's what I keep telling myself).

VENDORS
None this month (well-some eBay stuff but that doesn't count).
The updates are looking good. If you haven't already posted this month, please make sure you get them in soon. We will be starting the Round 1 voting in the next couple days.
Not much in the way of progress this month with work. I got the front bumper beam off, cleaned up the scrap in the interior and removed more trim.
Under challenges, I tried to remove the gas tank but it is full of sludge and about 3/4 full of gas so I need to get something better than the TSC bulb siphon.
Is it too late to join?
Bought my first 914 back in Oct. Been coming here for inspiration and ideas. Found this thread today and I wanna play too.
72 914 1.7 not too rusty, interior is totally shot, engine barely cranks, but its complete.

January +1 week update
Ruh-Ro, pulled one bearing to have a look....don't look so good. Looks like we're going all-in on this motor. Good thing I haven't had a car payment in the last 12 years, I'm going to basically 'buy a new car' for what it will cost. End result should be awesome though.
Note - to anyone buying a used engine, unless you have documentation of the build/rebuild and good leak-down numbers, only pay core price!!! I'm lucky I did.
Note #2 - I really need to try and salvage some old pictures from a dead hard-drive so I can make a thread on the history/build of my car!

Sorry no updates from me for January. I've been distracted by another car for the time being. I have auto-hobby ADD or in other words, too many cars.
I am ordering parts from 914rubber.
Jan/Feb update:
Man how do I keep forgetting to update this..... I had really hoped for big news, but I just cant seem to get things together. I got some new parts, but like always cant seem to get them to sit properly.

Build Thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=82421&st=480
Accomplishments:
Some progress on media blasting. I did pick up a 40lb media blaster and began remaining paint removal (via soda blasting):
February Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
1. Wasted time messing with console plates and rear transmission mounts. Both of which I'll likely not use.
2. Screwed around with fire wall embossing ideas. Doubt I'll use them.
3. Installed Tangerine Racing rear shock tower kit.
4. Final install of upper shock tower cross brace.
5. Removed tunnel and started initial work custom tunnel design/fab
6. Modified and installed rear floor panel
CHALLENGES
No real challenges this month, well OK, the aforementioned wasting time and screwing around items. While that stuff is fun, it's not really moving the build forward. I need to stop working on things that aren't required for getting the car on the road.
Overall, there's a bit of feeling overwhelmed by how much work I've created for myself with what I want to do with this build. It feels like I'm not making progress but then I look at the list of Accomplishments and, well, maybe it's not as bad as I think.

Transmission is back!
Engine is being sent out in pieces to be redone. Heads out for full re-freshening and either a new custom valve guide or else I'll need to find a single head. Case will be split and sent out to check out ($$), order pistons and send cyls out for refinishing, crank re-polished, etc etc

Accomplishments:
Learned to weld this month
Almost completed the rotisserie build/modification
Challenges:
Learning to weld
The rotisserie started life as an assembly tool for aircraft landing gear doors, and doesn't need much modification to be used on the 914. I still need to move the primary casters to balance each end. Then I will make the attachments for connecting to the car. I'll also need to decide how to keep the car in place, since the trunnion brake will not be enough.
Very cool rotisserie project!
Gotta love when you need to do a project to start on another one huh?

Build-Off Part Deux
Build Thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=82421&st=480
Accomplishments:
Continued progress on media blasting. Switching to crushed glass media to cut down dust & cost of soda. Picked up 600lbs in Phoenix.
Challenges:
Kid's vehicles. Sons' motorcycle and daughter's car were back in the garage needing work.
Vendors: None this month.
Pictures: None this month.
March Update:
Still buying up parts, and waiting on Scotty to find a new paint shop so I can finish painting the interior.
Engine is being sent out in pieces to be redone. Heads out for full re-freshening and with new custom valve guide on the FUBAR on. Case was split and found that the middle crank bearing walked around and ended up looking 'odd' ground a bit on the side the the crank, but not enough to need a new crank. Case to be sent out and expected to be back in 6-months .....so I guess that means I won't finish by Sept, that's for sure. Cyls sent out for recoating.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- Spending more money, if you can call that an accomplishment
CHALLENGES
- Spending more money than is smart....
- Timeline to have the engine case redone will push me into probably a year from now to get everything finished.
- Got a new job with about 200% more workload at the present. So I don't see myself doing much other than acting like a zombie when I get home.
Update with pictures:
Check out that middle bearing, one of these things is not like the others.
Bearing seems to have coiled itself as it wobbled in the journal and pressed against the crank. Basically the previous builder probably split the case, but didn't send it out for aligning (since mag cases tweek crooked as soon as you split them).

March Update
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=288393&view=findpost&p=2397587
I'm late with the March update, but here it is.
Accomplishments: All of my work has been on my rotisserie, so no progress on the car. However, the rotisserie is nearly complete. I've completed all of the removal of excess steel from the modification, and have raised the pivot points to allow the car to fully rotate. I've also added a steel disk to one arm, and a "pin block" to one stand to allow the car to be pinned/stationary at various points of rotation (I didn't trust the brake on the trunnion to hold the car by itself).
The ends have been painted. The only work left is to add the mounting points to each of the arms and apply paint.
Expenditures: The rotisserie has cost me about $250 so far.
Plans for April: Go to the Hershey swap meet; I need pieces and parts. Primarily looking for a front suspension and a front oil cooler kit, though any needed part is on the list (brakes, exhaust system, rear 5 lug parts)
Lessons learned: I need to retire so I can spend all day on the 914 GT project, but the wife seems to think this is a bad idea.
March Progress
I finally got the car in the air for a full inspection and in true 914 fashion the rot is not isolated to just the engine bay. The car is completely stripped and ready for new floor panels. Still looking for a donor tunnel since this one is beyond the point of no return.
Challenges: Unearthing more bad sheet metal is a mental challenge
Victories: I know where all the bodies are buried and can plan a way forward
Vendors: JJR for the remainder of the disassembly and media blasting
Steve for all new closures since the existing ones were not worth keeping
Next steps: Inventory of sheet metal and order parts to be replaced.
I mentioned to Steve that I may be interested in joining the build off just for fun but did not realize that I was actually listed as a "Challenger" until I looked at the thread today. So I guess I better get my info up here.
ABOUT ME
I am not a long-time car builder or even a competent mechanic like most of the people here. I am doing this restoration to learn all I can about these cars and develop some new skills. I love driving the cars but I would like to be able to work on them and help others with theirs so this is kind of like night school for me. I have an older brother that some of you may know, that got me it to these cars a few years ago. The 1st one I bought, I should have probably stayed away from. the 2nd one was this car and the 3rd one was supposed to be the parts car for the 1st one but will end up being the receiver and not the donor in that project.
I have 3 boys, all Eagle Scouts. 2 in college still and one with the car bug that is now in the workforce working on cars. My Wife and I have an Adult Foster Care Home taking care of seniors and I work with my brother at 914Rubber. Through this, I have discovered a passion for these cars and an awesome community of people through 914world.
GOALS FOR THIS CAR?
Well, it started out as a good barn find that I should have just tuned up and driven. The car was actually in pretty good shape and had been stored properly for most of its life. At the time my youngest son was going to school for auto body and he got a little carried away with the sanding. I also got a little carried away with the "While I'm in there, I may as well....." Next thing I know I am doing a bare metal restoration with a few upgrades.
At the end of the day, this is a 1.7. Hopefully, it will be a very nice 1.7 that I may enter into a few shows. For me, this is all about the passion for the project and bringing it back to "better than new car" status. This also gives me the chance to understand how the parts we make fit onto the car so I can be a better resource for the people wanting help installing them on their cars.
I am a builder by proxy on this one. I am hiring out most of the big stuff and then learning with the help of others like Cary Kutter, Super Inlaw and advice from Eric Shae, Bruce Stone and the 914world community at large. (And occasionally, my Brother too) So I will name who I am having do the work for me and what I am actually able to do.
Since I am late to the Challenge page, a lot of this work has been done on the car now but is all part of my goal for the car so here is what my check list is:
1- Learn all I can from the process.
2- Fix the damage to the right front fender.
3- Fix the rust in the Hell hole.
4- Fix the rust in the trunk and repair rear trunk issues.
5- Rebuild the motor and have a nicely balanced, dependable 1911
(Previous Owner had already made it a 1911 but I am having it completely gone through.)
6- Install factory swaybars front and rear.
7- New paint (Bahia Red)
8- All new bushings, bearings, fuel lines, seals, gaskets, cables ect...
9- New suspension
10- Rebuild the steering rack
11- Rebuild the Pedal Assembly
12- Sandblast and re-plate, powder coat or paint all parts as needed.
13- Completely new breaks
14- Ceramic coat the exhaust
15- Install Triad exhaust
16- New Windshield
17-New Interior
18 All 914rubber parts that I can put on the car.

2017 Build progress :
After installing the rattle trap matting, I added EZ-Cool on top. I used 3m 777 spray to lightly adhere it to the matt. EZ-cool holds it form a bit and I fitted each piece before installing. I am ordering carpet from 914 Rubber today! See the fit next months update.

Accomplishments:
Continued progress on media blasting. Was able to talk to the local shop that will be doing primer/paint. Will be getting an estimate once I get the prep work farther along.

Challenges:
Kid's vehicles. Lot's of travel with/for family. Had some fun though.

APRIL UPDATE:
Well not too much progress for a number of reasons.
Spent time repairing and then replacing my daily driver ('04 F150)
Now I have a New to me 2015 F150. Also College visits to see my daughter took up some weekend time.
Needed to address some health issues (high blood pressure)

This will help me get the car blasted!
April Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900
No progress, not good. The '74 was taking longer to finish than I thought and then I hurt my shoulder and can't work on the car - so says the doc. Little stuff I can still do but I can't raise my arm above my shoulder w/out pretty significant pain. Frustrating.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
Not much beyond purchasing parts. But that ain't gonna do much good if I can't lift them to put them on...
- A-arms rebuilt
CHALLENGES
- Shoulder injury preventing me working on the car. (I'm claiming it isn't age related. I'm simply not ready to admit that sort of thing is possible).
- One too many cars

April Update:
Has it been a month already? This month I got nada done, other than discussions with my engine guy about porting the heads and searching for a set of good 35 or 36mm manifolds for my weber 40 carbs. I also discussed with him about my oil cooling questions. After seeing my large cooler with the good fans, he suggested running the setup in the back. Plumb up some aeroquip hoses and see if it cools. If it does cool, get some nice lines made up and go with it....if it doesn't cool, then I'll do a front trunk cooler.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- On the car....None
- On the garage space....Finally put my garage art up on the walls to free up the space it was taking up on the garage floor, and a concrete slab poured to build a small shed to free up some garage space for the build (snow blower, saw horses, wood working tools etc).
CHALLENGES
- Time....
Picture of the cooler setup I have: Setrab with a pair of Spal fans...I plan on running a thermostatic switch to turn on the fans automatically. Anyone have a recommendataion for a good thermo-switch setup?

Challenges:
More holes than I anticipated

So, I'm a little late for the April update. I accomplished little on the car, but did finish the rotisserie and purchased a few items.
The largest purchase was a Carrera front end, and I am awaiting shipment of a hook and grommet from the group buy.
Over the next couple weeks I will remove the rear suspension, and mount the car to the rotisserie. I'll finalize the rotisserie mounting points at that time.

2017 Build progress :
Lowed the fuse panel and as I did terminal wires pulled, or fell off. I did know it was in poor shape, but. So I replaced the ends from a second harness I had. Also installed a new panel.
The carpet arrive from 914 Rubber salt and pepper looks great, fits great, and nice edging.
Also replaced the early seat belts with factory late belts.
Unexpected challenges:
More end bad on the fuse panel, you should check yours. Trying to decide on carpet color. I think I have the body color I want, but that could also change.

May Update:
Not much action here.
I was able to find a set of manifolds for my carbs.
Got some 40 carb to 35mm head manifolds from mskala. Now I can have my heads ported to 35mm so they can flow correctly for the high C:R pistons and hot cam 'Should' add up to about 220hp when all finished.
Also got some core visors from Garold Shaffer to send off to 914Rubber for redo....with neon green thread to match my car's paint Hopefully I'll do the same with the upper and lower stitched dash and headliner. I'd love to do the backpad too, but that's not really needed.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- Got some parts and sending some off
- manifolds
- visors
CHALLENGES
- Waiting, that's the biggest challenge....but I honestly have a lot more parts to purchase before getting it put together, so no big deal.
- Still need to get some paint once ScottyB finds a new paint supplier. That will make it possible to paint my newly de-tar'd floor boards etc. Only to be covered in some sound deadening and carpet, but at least I'll know it's pretty underneath

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Was finally able to get the car lowered. Had to do some rework of the strut towers to accomplish that. Used a special green foam to get a mold of the clearance between hood and top of strut towers. I still believe that I can push the strut tower up at least 1 inch but I will have to have a new monoball top late machined. I'm working on creating a 3D model of it and see what it will take for Chip to put it on his CNC mill.
CHALLENGES: Getting the strut tower pushed up as far as possible into the hood to create room for suspension travel.
VENDORS: Local guy for 916 steel flares. Ordering new floors next week.

July Update: Michigan Build
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=265772&st=120#
2017 Build progress :
Installed a long awaited powered sub. Pulled the windshield. Finished wet sanding, and started build a paint booth.
Unexpected challenges:
Wet sanding was fun, again! Rebuilding a paint booth PVC and plastic I put away 2 ears ago.
Vendors:
914 Rubber, windshield clips and lower molding, and new carpet.
Progress Pictures:
I will finish the paint, but will have to wait on sand out and polish till after Okteenerfest, I want the paint to sit.
See the Build link for more, and the whole story. Thanks for look.
JULY UPDATE.....
PROGRESS: Obtained an early rear bumper to be period correct for the GT look.
CHALLENGES: Me! Plus time off for vacation.
VENDORS: Tom Bliznik. Thanks Tom!
Spent time cleaning up bumper and eliminating most of its rusty bits.
Still need to retap the bolt holes. Casualty of rusty bolt removal.

Finally got back to focusing on this and it reminds me how much I enjoy the creative process. Good thing because I've run into issues like the head rests running into the main hoop, resulting in throw away/redo work.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
- Front hoop finalized and installed
- Rear floor final welding, seat mounting hardware and cross brace installed
- Version 2 of the main hoop/door bar design finalized, pieces bent
- played around with a set of turbo forward headers, but I'll probably go a different way
CHALLENGES
Wasted time. Well, let's be positive and call it "I learned some stuff!"
Original main hoop design interferes with head rest, resulting in loss of ~2" of seat travel = back to the drawing board on the chassis stiffening design.

July update
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=288393&view=findpost&p=2509094
Made some progress finally. I started the front oil cooler mods by cutting the front floor out and adding smooth metal with an outlet hole. My first time welding sheet metal, so my progress was incredibly slow, but I'm happy with the results.
My spare tire should arrive this week, so I need to decide how to mount it vertically and get that finished.
I'm also going to add some stiffening/reinforcement bars under the oil cooler.
Purchases: sheet metal and 1" square tube = $16. Oil cooler from PMS $490. Oil cooler shroud from QRS Fiberglass for about $150 with shipping. Spare tire $300 (too high)
Challenges: I wish I could weld faster and better. Maybe when it's all done, I'll know how to weld.
August plans: weld in reinforcement tubes, make mount for oil cooler, make mount for the spare tire, fit shroud.
These are coming along very well.

August Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900
Last update before our 9/14 end date. And I didn't get close to my targeted goal.
Ah, well... I suppose that's why it's called a "challenge"!
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
- Patched in the main hoop cut-outs that are no longer needed
- Went in a completely different direction with the intake system. Though I'm not sure this counts as an accomplishment!
- All chassis stiffening tubes, support pads and gussets fabricated and fit, ready for welding
CHALLENGES
For me, the disadvantages of not having firm design plans are that I end up doing the "2 steps forward, 1-3 steps back" dance, resulting in less progress (sometimes a lot less!) than originally planned. But that's the creative process that seems to work for me.

Still have a bit of interior and some trim to do along with the driver's door glass but I'm pretty much done with the car now it runs and drives and is in the trailer heading to red Rocks I plan on getting lots of pictures to share

Ended up having to do some unconventional things with the engine. But it sounds awesome and starts up with half turn the key. So far I've got about 100 ft of driving in her but I'm loving what I feel so far
Attached thumbnail(s)
Looks great. That is one clean engine. Awesome work. Liking the nerf bar. I have a NOS in box,
no courage to mount it. But now that I see yours....
Very cool Matty! Congrats!
I took me over a year and a half to get the engine from the Builder and there were some miscommunications along the way. The car was a 1911 that he had built when he owned it when I had him rebuild it he rebuilt it as a 1.7 with a very aggressive cam and very precise balance. It runs amazing and everyone who has heard it including Jeff Gamroth at Rosthsort racing was impressed with it. Other than the carbs are too big. It did give me some ideas on fuel injection that I will be going to in the future but for the Build-Off deadline and for making it to one of the rallies it was not in the cards for now.
Can't wait to drive this thing. I'll post updates

September update:
So 9-14-17 has passed. I'm no where near
completing this car. Lots more to do.
I was able to remove old trailing arms & rear brake assembly.
As well as rear struts/springs. This is in preparation to
weld in replacement console provided by Chris (tygaboy), Thanks Chris!
This will be on left side. Right side quite sound.
I obtained new trailing arms from JayMann. Thank you.
Let's see oh yeah, procured some tasty Webers from
Fitton. Thanks Mike.
All I need to do is assemble all the above.
Simple right?
I will still add to my build thread. Looks as though the challenge for this time frame is done.
Hats off to all the competition. Just incredible skills out there.
Nice stuff guys!

Very nice updates. The cars are looking good. I emailed everybody to please post your final updates here soon. We will start final voting next weekend, and announce the winners after the votes are in.
September Update
Build thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900
To quote Dion, who (as far as my car is concerned) has a case of understatement-itis:
"So 9-14-17 has passed. I'm no where near completing this car. Lots more to do."
As stated in last month's update, I too didn't get close to my targeted goal.
Assuming there's a 2018 Challenge, and quoting another determined fellow:
"I'll be back..."
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - See build thread for the bonus details and photos!
- Fabricated and fit the cross bar
- purchased the A/C compressor and mounting hardware
SUMMARY and LESSONS LEARNED
I don't think I'm alone with I say I think it's best summed up as "so much to do, so little time."
Life happens and the hobby goes on hold. A week here, a month there and all of a sudden, 12 months are gone.
Moving forward, I'm trying to be more deliberate in how I budget my time. I identify the work I want to accomplish, try and be honest about what it'll take and budget that time, whatever it is. Let's see if this makes a difference for me.
And hopefully, I'll get better about design decisions and not get too badly delayed with the "what if I did this instead?" stuff that so often eats up time.
SPECIAL CALL OUT TO VENDORS
We're blessed to have so many great vendors helping support us and our wonderful little cars. But I have to call out "Vendor of My Build" as Chris Foley at Tangerine Racing.
From his door braces to suspension modification components to his unending willingness to talk in detail and at length with me about whatever it was I was calling about... Well, it just doesn't get any better than Chris' support for his customers.
And don't worry 914 Rubber, I plan to bug the crap out of you, once I get to that point in my build!)
THANKS TO MY FELLOW CHALLENGERS AND BUILD THREAD CONTRIBUTORS
Without others willing to jump in, underestimate and over commit, what fun would the Challenge be?
I'm honored to have been able to participate as part of this group of folks and can't say how much I've learned or how much I enjoyed reading each of your updates. I hope to meet each of you at some point.
And of course, it certainly wouldn't have been the same without the input I got from my fellow teeners! Special acknowledgement to Rand and Tony! Thanks guys, you're the best.
Congrats to all Challengers on your accomplishments. See you all in 2018 and keep up the great work!

Final Update:
Not a darn thing on the car sad.gif
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
- Nada, the cases/heads are still out for refinishing. See picture for what the leftover engine parts look like currently
- I did get the 35mm manifolds out to my engine builder and they looked good enough to use.
CHALLENGES
- Worst month of my life...I unexpectedly lost my father, he was doing some work and was gone the next. Therefore my main cheerleader for working on my car/house/bike projects is gone. I have a feeling it'll take me a year or so to even start working on them again. Time to get family stuff in order, the car can wait a few more years if needed...
Photo is from when I got the car back from paint/body a few years back.
VENDORS
914Rubber - received my visors from the group buy. I wanted to have Ravenna Green thread stitching, but the spec I was given was not as strong as was listed on the order form. Therefore I went with standard black stitching...looks good. I will go more subtle with the interior due to this, which I'm totally fine with.

Been too busy at work to do anything. Bought super duper tig welder and will be finishing welding everything as soon as work lets up. Getting anxious to finish.
Been working, but mostly on peripheral stuff. Built the paint booth and the air filter. I have to finish the wall with the outlet filters. As I have been working on that stuff the air compressor decided to take a dump. Ordered the factory part so it would just bolt on and guess what... nope superseded by a different part. After overcoming this I got the compressor running again. Hope to paint sometime next week.

Final update:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=288393&view=findpost&p=2509094
Still working the front trunk area and oil cooler, but have made some progress. I've fabbed the spare tire mount, completed the reinforcements, and fabbed the bottom section of the shroud. I'm now ready to fab the last part; the cooler mount.
Haven't spent too much recently.
~ $30 on metal, weld nuts, sanding supplies
$60 on a brake proportioning valve. It's in great shape, but I think I'll send it to PMB for a rebuild.
$60 for the metal brake from Harbor Freight
My recent challenge was learning to shape a few countours on the bottom section of the oil cooler shroud. It looks OK, but needs a little more touch up.
My October plan is to get the car on the rotisserie to strip the bottom and undercoat it.
Here's a few pics.
2017 Build-Off Challenge
Build-Off Part Deux
Here is a summary of what I added for 2017 Deux:
This project has been quite the journey so far. I've learned a lot along the way. Hopefully I can use what I've learned to help others and give back to the community that's helped me get this far.
One of the things I didn't want to accept is that these cars are ready when they're ready, not when your ready. I tried to push as hard as I could to help speed that process up. Ultimately putting in more hours in didn't produce the results I wanted. At the end of this build it got completely ridiculous. Trying to push to get to Okteenerfest and then Red Rocks when I couldn't make it to Okteenerfest because the car wasn't done yet. The last month of the build I pretty much worked on the car every day. Each day getting longer than the day before. Before I knew it I was spending 16 hours a day on the car, working in to the wee hours of the morning or working all night. As the parts start going back on the car, it has a momentum to it and you want to put on one more thing. By this time I was starting to experience brain fatigue and could not retain anything, it was like having dementia. I ended up putting a gnarly scratch in the top of my door while trying install the window tracks. And in general just didn't make the best decisions.
Taking the car to Colorado for Red Rocks.
I was very excited about being able to take my own car to a rally. This was one of the things helping to motivate me to complete the project. So with all of about a hundred feet of driving time on the car. I borrowed a friends trailer and towed the car for the 2500 mile journey. The car, running carburetors, ran great at our altitude of about 200 feet however at almost 6,000 feet, the car did not run quite so well. I did get in a nice drive in the morning. Drove like a brand new car everything nice and tight, shifting was perfect, grabbed a couple pictures but the car was sputtering . Before you knew it we were turning carburetors screws and adjusting timing and that was it, the car went back in the trailer.
Now that the car is back I have taken it back to Cary's shop so I can continue getting her sorted out. This will be an ongoing project as I have now decided that I want to go to a microsquirt setup so that altitude is not an issue in the future and so that I can get as much performance as possible out of this engine build.
I'm headed out to go work on her now but I'll grab a few more pictures to post on here.

Last call for votes on the 2017 Build-Off Challenge. To vote go here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VVXGN6F
The votes are in and tallied. We are just verifying who's 914s are on the road. I hope to be able to post the results later today.
Wow! Nice job people!
So over the past two weeks we have been trying to confirm that the winners’ cars are actually on the road, which is a requirement to win the challenge. It seems that none of the top finishers in the polls were able to get their cars finished on the road. I completely understand, as our 914 is still unfinished. :-)
Stay tuned. We will have this sorted out this weekend.
A lot of people bit off more than they can chew and took the limelight in the process. The award needs to go to someone who finished. (Meaning finished the stated goal. Of course they are never done.)
And the winner is....?
