914World.com _ 914World Garage _ DC area 914 specialists needed

Posted by: colinva914 Nov 7 2016, 12:50 PM

Hello,
I live in Northern VA and am looking for a shop that has experience servicing 914s and them in VA inspection shape that also don't cost an arm and leg smile.gif. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Taylor Chapman (http://www.chapmanautowerks.com/) knows air cooled Porsches, but I don't know how much he's actually worked on 914's. I've met him but haven't actually used his services yet. I think he has a pretty solid reputation though. He's off Rt 28 near Dulles.

I'm local to you and can provide free advice (and worth every penny) if you're interested. PM me your contact info if you'd like. I'm in Cascades.

I've had IMA do some work on my '76 2.0 a few years back (like 5 years ago). Any "good" shop has 1 old guy who remembers working on these cars 20 years ago.. but not too many of those guys still exist.

I would try Chapman, IMA (Chantilly), ASG and Autobahn as they are some of the more established Porsche shops near you.

RPM down in Newington. Some folks use a shop closer to Baltimore.. GT Racing maybe? Tiffs? can't quite remember the names.

Arm and Leg? I'd expect $150/hr or more rates at any of the independents. Not sure if there is a guy in Leesburg proper anymore. I know there is a shop that does Alfas, but not sure if hes a general "foreign car" specialist.

The shop you chose may also be dependant upon the type of work you need.. Carb work? FI work? Suspension work? Rust repair? Interiors? For some of that, there might be non Porsche specific shops that can do just as good of work..

Or, as Beat Navy mentions, any number of folks on the board here might be local enough to help you out, provided food and drink is provided wink.gif

Sorry Colin, I did get your email response. Had to fish it out of my spam filter this morning which was on steroids today for some reason and blocking lots of legit messages. I'll get back to you there.

Also, if you haven't already checked it out, there's Dorkiphus (https://dorkiphus.net) forums. Lean on 914 content, but it's focused on the DC area.

Ray Plewacki at Autosport Systems is a 914 expert.

He's good, but spendy...granted all Porsche specialists in the area are biggrin.gif

Keep in mind that Colin's car has a Chevy 350, so many Porsche shops will look at him cross-eyed.

Oh, that's a horse of a different color....Ray may look at him strangely. He's picky with cars. He loves stock-ish and rust free cars.
