914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What do I have here???

Posted by: DavidC Apr 25 2005, 09:12 AM

I picked up what is supposed to be a 1976 914. It's a 1.8 fi, the tag on the door jam says built 11/75 but it doesn't have the mounts for an energy absorbing front bumper like I have seen on other 75-76 914's. Whats up wit dat???

Post the VIN. There were no 1.8 '76 cars, they were all 2.0. Something is funky here. huh.gif

Does the vin on the pass front trunk fender match the windshield vin?

Does it have mounts for the big bumpers in the rear?

Compare all the VIN's. Ownership, window frame, decal on door post, right fenderwell, right headlight support or gastank wall. If the car has been pieced together, then this may help. If you want to be really tricky, check the VIN on the underside of the dash written in grease pen above the ashtray.

Check the chassis number and paint code on the Karmann badge (drivers door hinge post) and compare the chassis number to that punched into the rear trunk floor in front of the right taillight. Does the paint code match the paint color on any part of the car?

There may be a few 1.8's produced in 1976 model year. If so, then I expect they were very early and thus Aug or Sept time frame not as late as Nov. Is there an emissions decal in the engine compartment? It should be a G-code engine with 120 CID for a 2.0 engine. An engine swap was done most likely. What is the engine #? I can check to see about when it would have been installed originally.

drivers side A pillar, near the bottom, you can only view it from the outside of the car.

there is also a stamped number on the pass. side shock tower, it should match the VIN on the winshield tag and the plate on the pass. side headlight bucket.

A-pillar Just about where the winshield wiper tip ends up if it is installed correctly, about 4" up from the cowl just on the edge of the glass facing out.

The 2nd & 3rd digits indicate 74. Will be interesting to see what the other VINs say.

FWIW - only US (possibly - only North America...) cars had the A-pillar tag. Euro cars didn't. at least this was true in 1970 - i had one of each...
