McMark took some time out of his busy schedule to fly to CA and help me get my /6 rolling.

It will be traveling to Original Customs in Michigan soon to begin its transformation into a running and driving car.

If you plan to have Harvey do the wheels, get them to him sooner rather than later....He is so booked it is a 2 year wait at least. Well worth it, but plan accordingly.

Cleared all the tar off the floor to see what we're working with. I'm actually REALLY surprised how good the floors are. Since the chassis was sitting outside in the weather for years, I would have expected more holes. This is the sort of experience that reinforces my understanding that rust is not the voracious predator everyone seems to think it is. Just because a car gets wet doesn't mean it'll rust away in a year. I'm considering keeping these pans and just patching a few small areas..

Continuing prep for putting the car up on the Celette bench. Trying to remove as much 'bad' metal as I can now. I had wanted to put off media blasting the car, but now I'm thinking it might be better to go ahead and get it done now. idea.gif

I opened up the PS rear fender because of the rust holes, and I think I'm going to open up all the areas that rust from the seam sealer/foam. It's the best way to get all that crap out, and chances are they're rusty on the back side, so if they're not showing now, they will in the future. Nows the time to nip it in the bud.
Attached Image Attached Image

Also removed the rear section of the front PS fender. The door pillar is tweaked and rusted. So I'll need to replace that. I had a spare panel for that, but it must have gotten tossed in the move. Anyone have a PS door pillar or a car they're cutting up?
Attached Image Attached Image

Posted by: McMark Jan 3 2017, 04:22 PM

Oh, I removed the fiberglass GT flares as well. Looks like there'll be plenty of material left to install the steel flares.
Attached Image Attached Image

Finally, removed the rusty engine shelf, and homemade battery tray. You can see the mangled suspension ear at the bottom of the second photo.

A few questions.....why does the car have the ignition mounted on the steering column (looks like) instead of the dash, a six thing

And aren't true sixes more valuable/desirable in their stock form? I.E. No flares, original color and so on..

Either way, I'm sure it will be a great six when you are done with it.

If a car is still original, yes. If it is restored, perhaps. But one very nice thing about the Porsche hobby as opposed to the Ferrari or Corvette hobbies is that hot rods are accepted and even valued equally if they are true to form and done to a high level. Even color changes are accepted if the work is done well enough.

So, Andy has a blank canvas—and I have no idea if value enters his equation. I am sure fun does, and they are not mutually exclusive. A very well done, period-correct GT conversion (like Eric Shea's) would have significant value here and abroad as an events (rally, vintage race, etc) car, and be a lot of fun until it's time to sell. Andy already has a 3.6 hot rod, so I am very curious to see what he does with this.

But there is no wrong answer—for here is a 914-6 that might've been lost if not for him. I still remember the first day of its revival a long time back. So cool to see it continuing on that journey.

'Tis indeed. First years of marriage, living in downtown SF, just a few years into Exc, pre-kid, a Saturday away. A good Saturday away. Met a bunch of neat folks and got to be just another car nut. Feels like yesterday. And a lifetime ago.

Was just talking with someone about this board, and that the people here are among my favorites in all of Porschedom. There are other cool forums, but there is something about 914world.com, and its subject matter, that draws very cool people to it. Hard to put a rhyme or reason to it, but that day underlined it.

I have a shell sitting at Camp914 but I can't get it until spring. I'm sure someone will come through before then. But if not I am just cutting it up for parts.

Back from soda blasting. Pure soda is a little too 'gentle' to attack some of the surface rust. I'll be able to quickly hit it with a scotchbrite though. The underside will get blasted on a rotisserie, once the rust repair is complete.

This is the part of Body Work that fascinates me. Don't get me wrong. I am not a body man but knowing how one fix effects other areas impresses me. I remember Rick writing about this awhile back and thinking of all the experience one must have I order to do body work in the correct sequence. Experience is everything it is cracked up to be.. beerchug.gif

Posted by: McMark Apr 4 2019, 08:37 AM

So here's the big-picture plan for this project.

Phase 1: Aligning Structural Points
This was already completed by the crew at Yeoman Auto Body during this car's first session on the Celette bench. My fixtures agree with their work, which is great to see and further confirms the accuracy of my fixtures since Andy's car was aligned using the old fixtures -- the ones that were actually right.

Phase 2: Aligning Non-Structural Points
This phase is all about jigs. The windshield hoop on this car was shoved out of alignment by the roof during the crash. So as the car sits now, the suspension/engine mounts are all in the right place, but there are still bends and stresses bound in the surrounding metal. Before cutting anything apart, and while the chassis fixtures are all in place, the door/windshield/hood openings all need to be confirmed using jigs. I have door jigs I built already. But windshield and hood jigs are in the process of being built (This is what I've been working on...). Using these I will work the body to match these jigs.

Phase 3: Replace Structural Metal
Now that all the critical measurements are back in line I can start replacing metal from the center outward, making any adjustments and tweaks necessary. Cutting out old metal will release bound up stresses, and fitting new metal will require working the surrounding metal. Once this phase is complete, things like longitudinals, floor pans, front trunk pan will all be replaced.

Phase 4: Replace Non-Structural Metal
At this point the body alignment portion of the project at complete. Now things like the fenders/firewall/etc will get rust repaired, replace and/or modified (fender flares). This is 'normal' rust repair and chassis work. At the end of this phase, the main chassis will be complete.

Phase 5: Panel Alignment
The final step on the bench is to install the doors, hoods, and roof to make sure those are all in alignment, and the panel gaps are set to factory specs. I'll be using lead where applicable, just like the factory.

Phase 6: Roll Cage

Phase 6: Roll Cage
confused24.gif

I don't think i want a full cage again. At this point i'm leaning towards one of your GT 1/2 cage roll hoop bar thingamajiggers ...
idea.gif

PS: I really want to be able to have both seats go all the way back if needed.
PPS: That also implies i want a movable passenger seat (at least be able to bolt down in different positions).
PPPS: Which also means i'd like to be able to mount my racing seats and 5-point harness.
biggrin.gif

Gettin' drastic.... w00t.gif

The driver side long was straighter, but still bent. And that became really evident when I cut into it and all the stress released. Practically popped from the bound up stress.
Floor pans weren't terrible either, except by the time I patched all the little rust spots I might as well do the whole thing. Plus I can clean and check inside the center tunnel.

It's pretty amazing how solid everything else is though. Not a bit of wobble or mobility to either half of the car. I wub.gif my Celette bench.

Cleared out the last remnants of the longs. There's quite a bit of minor straightening to do on the right side. I might cut out the bent up dash section next week. I suspect there's quite a bit of stress hiding there. And fitting up the replacement panel may illuminate a few more alignment issues. We'll see.

Moved on to the front end. We have a cut section from another car to swap in. The right fender well is gonna need a lot of massaging to bring back into place. This will give me access, and as I mentioned previously, fitting the new piece will illustrate any minor misalignment.

More work to do here, but the next big step will be fitting the new longitudinals.

Yeah, I'm still alive...

Built a lot of jigs, measured a lot, and scratched my head a lot trying to make sure everything will line up where it needs to go. Finally got to the part where I start putting metal back into place. And guess what I learned? This inner long piece is about 0.25" shorter than the original. dry.gif

Gotta figure out how I'm gonna deal with this. Maybe there's another brand, or maybe I'll CAD one up and have my CNC lasercut & bending shop make me a custom one. head_hurts_kr.gif

Pretty sure that's a AA piece. I had that same piece and then purchased the long section from Germany. It's a repo to the factory part but it was also shorter.
I finally found the right factory section for my 6 repair. It's not gonna be an easy fix. As Mark has stated lots of measuring. I recently purchased a set of 914 chassis fixtures which should help in fixing my 6.

Mark, when I was looking at using that long section from AA I found a few problems with it. The seat belt mount location was off, hot air tube hole was way too small, and needed a lot of fitting to fit proper. Hope it works out.

Sounds like we're talking about the same part. That's my complaint list too.

Got started on the drawing, but found out the front of the long is shorter than the back to accommodate the 'rise' in the floor pan. Duh. But I'm asking the shop if they can make bends this close together. If not, I'll have to make it flat like the other repro parts. Or something else I have in the back of my mind. ph34r.gif

I will confirm that although we resell both items, left and right, neither are our stampings.

Hess stamps the drvr side and AA is the passenger side.

Yup. If you get lucky and can find something in good shape. But it's SUCH a gamble. I don't want to get trapped trying to salvage a 'good' part that turns out to be rusty or bent. Yeah, there's some compromises, but there always is. Parts from another car are no exception. Everyone's gotta make their own choice about what works, and this is mine. beerchug.gif

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=179 This what you had in mind? The blue block is a shaping tool I'll have them make so I can clamp it in place and hammer it into shape. I don't think it's worth chasing the bit of flange at the corner. But if you're really into it, I can have them cut a little curved piece and weld that into the gap. It's all time... unsure.gif

Got the new piece. Really happy with how it turned out, except I need two changes. 1) I had it made in 20g, which is the stock thickness. But I pulled out the driver side piece I have and that's 18g. I should have checked that first cause I want them to match for equal stiffness on both sides. 2) The top radius bend is just a hard 90 instead of a radius bend. But I did bend over the flanges at the front (by the heater tube) to make sure those worked, and it turned out great. If anyone is interested in buying the 'castoff' part, PM me.

BTW, the driver's side piece I have (HESS, apparently) is correct dimensions, so I won't need to go through this again.

Hey Mark, did you use the Hess drivers side long? If so did you have to modify it and what are you thoughts on this piece? beerchug.gif

* absolutely no doubt in my mind you will make this very lucky six a beautiful car again

After a long time measuring, checking, massaging, and agonizing the driver's side long is roughed in. I'm starting to think this might actually turn into a car again.. shades.gif

Maybe it is of interest, here is a picture from my original 914 fixture for the Celette Jig. Purchased it loooong time ago, when 914s with rust were thrown away.

Great job, Mark, it is good to see just annother 914 saved!

Amazing. It has got to get a lot easier from that point forward, right? That looks great and it is wonderful to see that chassis moving forward so it can get back on the road. beerchug.gif

It's a good piece. Much better than the passenger side repro piece, but I think mine is better. The only real 'issue' I noticed is the bottom bend radius is the same as the top, so it'll take a bit of massaging where the old and new come together. And the floor pan relief isn't quite right. But as far as repro pieces go, it's good.

Yeah, I've built a lot of that for this project. The Celette fixtures only ensure the suspension points are in the right place, it doesn't guarantee the doors will line up or the windshield, etc. That's been the hardest part of this project. The metal work is not any harder than normal, but you only get one shot to get this all right -- if I make a mistake or rush or don't check something in the right order, at the right time, then I could stack a whole bunch of other metal on top of something that's wrong. Most of the time hasn't been actually working, just a lot of thinking and planning, measuring and building jigs.

Getting these longitudinals in will somewhat 'lock' the front half to the back half. It took me a LONG time to get comfortable with my measurements, not just the numbers, but where I'm measuring from and to. To get here I only locked the strut tops into place with fixtures. Those are my 'grounding points', each time I add in another connection things get a little more solid. This builds confidence, but also absolutely must be done in the right order. If you lock something in too early, you could screw yourself later if it needs to move. I wouldn't quite say anything will be any easier until the doors are looking good and the front a-arm mounts are solid. At that point, as long as things are still lining up right, everything will get easier. Right now there's still a lot of.... risk? confused24.gif Not sure that's the right word, but there's still a lot of work before I feel like this has been successful.

Posted by: McMark Nov 23 2020, 04:02 PM

The green is stuff I'm pretty sure is done. The red is stuff I KNOW is wrong and needs major work. The stuff with no color could be right, could need work.

It's far from over.

I am a bit late to the party, but I can see tons of good stuff going on here. We are fitting new longs on the passenger side and it appears the new (RD) piece is too tall at the front end. Vertical dimensions (including flanges) are 7 3/8" rear and 8" front. The dimensions required at the front end are in the 7 1/4" range being dictated by the location of the wheel well lower flange (existing) and the upper edge of the lower door hinge post. Also the bends are not 90 degrees. Can someone help?

Collision damage ON TOP OF rust damage, quite the project and hats off, it's looking great.

Time to bump this one. Some may understand the amount of work this is. There is so much reverse engineering here with both the crash damage and rust on top of it. Nice work. Your brain must hurt some days.

It is a privilege to be a part of this group of enthusiasts. So many awesome builds and conversions going on. Wonderful talent being showcased.
Mark your skills have been known on world for a while.
It’s an overused word but it is AMAZING the metal skill to resurrect this six.
Look forward to more. Thanks SirAndy for bringing it back.
Going to be a cool creation with the hints of your plans for it.
Cheers, Dion

Talked to McMark today. Progress is slow but steady. The front trunk floor pan is in and he's working on making sure the suspension attachment points are within spec.

Even after all the pulling on the Celette bench, there's still a metric shit ton of bent metal on this car.

Slow but steady wins the race. I am sure McMark will get that tub like new. beerchug.gif

Wow! This one is worth seeing more of. On the bright side for me, the restoration has been going on longer than mine! rolleyes.gif

But, in all fairness, it started off way worse and of course it is a real /6 worthy of saving.

So amazing this was offered up for sale at one point for $5k as /6 tub and no takers. Glad SirAndy is saving it!
