914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Hershey 2017 unofficial thread

Posted by: mepstein Dec 31 2016, 07:41 AM

Ok. I jumped the gun by one day. biggrin.gif
This isn't the thread to make specific plans for Hershey but more like to spitball ideas and just talk bs. Happy New Year everyone!

Posted by: Unobtanium-inc Dec 31 2016, 08:11 AM

The Unobtanium Crew will be there as usual, probably on the C row. Come by the booth for a FREE gift bag or ask my mom questions about my childhood.

I believe it's the weekend of April 21. One week after Easter. Hope the weather is as nice as last year...

Great. Anybody working on a build/restoration better stop by your booth and load up.

Speaking of booths, I'll do the group buy for spaces again if you guys are ok with it.

I love it when guys do this, it makes buying a lot easier when like minded guys group together. It also helps because when you walk into a booth everyone in it knows what the parts are, because they are all the same car guys.

Posted by: stevegm Dec 31 2016, 10:09 AM

We'll be there. I'm up for whatever everybody wants to do. I sure would like to do the Friday drive. If we can get our car done finally. If Mark can do the booth spaces that's great. I'll take 2.

Posted by: wndsnd Dec 31 2016, 04:27 PM

Thanks for the organization Mark. I am in for a space. Looking forward to seeing everyone

" ask my mom questions about my childhood." That's a BIG mistake.

And no more Knight's Inn for me. You should have seen the room we had last year, right out of India, New Delhi probably and adjacent to the highway. You guy's remember that wonderful aroma from the farm directly behind after they put down their manure? No, I can't do it. I don't need the Park Avenue Hilton, but Jesus Christ, give me something without all the spiders, the noise, the stink, and a 7 year old mattress. No, I just can't.

Posted by: mb911 Dec 31 2016, 05:58 PM

I am seriously considering coming this year and show off heat exchangers and oil tanks.

The best deal is the Econo Lodge in Hershey, I prefer the Comfort Inn on Mae but it's a little more money. Knights Inn have always scared me a little bit.

I'm planning on coming with the family and making stops on the way to or way home at Gettysburg and the flight 93 memorial.

That's one Hershey tradition I don't participate in. I stay at a place near the park. Clean and quiet.

I agree, I stay in a lot of hotels, and it doesn't cost that much to find something clean and decent. The Econo Lodge last year was $85 a night, and was decent.
My brother once saved $20 by staying in the Motel 5 instead of the Motel 6, no lie, there was a Motel 5. When he woke in the morning the sun was hitting the ceiling, and he saw the blood, guess they missed that on cleaning day.
Don't get cheap on hotels, bedbugs are real and all kinds of other horrors.

Posted by: somd914 Jan 1 2017, 07:01 AM

I'll be there. Had hoped to have the Ravenna green car re-sprayed and ready for Hershey this year, but life got in the way... Likely will be there in the silver car again this year, hopefully running on all four cylinders the entire weekend and no hotel parking lot carb work!

Looking forward to it. And Happy New Year to everyone beerchug.gif

Posted by: Porschef Jan 1 2017, 07:42 AM

Ahhh, yes, Len. I remember all those lovely accouterments provided by the Knight's Inn. Not to mention the skeevy carpet.

But the clincher for me was the 3 hr sheeplove.gif session in the room adjacent to me and the wife. While most impressive, grouphug.gif first.gif the extended conversation following was brutal. Definitely no insulation in dem walls... dry.gif

Will just be getting back from the Florida Keys the week before and do plan on being there. No Knights Inn for me and the wife. She refuses to stay there. There were more interesting smells inside the room besides the manure spread out behind that place. Looking for something a bit more civilized and packed with like minded folks. Any thoughts for a better place to drink and sleep

Posted by: mepstein Jan 1 2017, 09:51 AM

Hershey has lots of places to stay. My wife usually goes on booking.com and reads reviews then picks a place. We did a lot of college touring for our two kids and it worked out well to find what we wanted. Reviews are never a guarantee but it worked for us.

Posted by: wndsnd Jan 1 2017, 06:13 PM

I would love to party with the gang, and usually stop over for a couple, but I build up points with Holiday Inn so I stay there. Usually I am about 10 minutes out of Hershey someplace I like the Express - usually fairly new and clean and they give a free breakfast

I normally stay at Comfort Inn's because of the breakfast is normally decent, but Hershe negates all that since I'm out the door at 5AM, long before the free food starts.

Posted by: 914forme Jan 1 2017, 08:58 PM

i'll be there again, and will stay off somewhere besides a Knights Inn. Last year stayed at a Red Roof, and it was a dive.

Posted by: 914dave Jan 14 2017, 06:36 PM

Just bumping this to the top. I will have a car this year and planned on the Friday drive and saturday dinner.

Posted by: Unobtanium-inc Jan 14 2017, 07:09 PM

Everyone should have confirmation of their spaces in a couple of weeks, according to the organizers, they are waiting on the vendor stickers and then space confirmations will be in the mail. I'm hoping to be in our usual spot on the C row.

I might try to make this - never have been to this gathering. I've heard enough about the Knights Inn to not stay there - they were even the cheap alternative 20+ years ago when I lived outside DC. No thanks.

Is there any camping (trailer camping) area on or around the grounds?

Posted by: Unobtanium-inc Jan 15 2017, 11:13 AM

If you are looking for one of the more reasonable priced hotels like the Quality Inn or the Econo Lodge, make your reservations now. They either fill up for prices go way up once you get closer to the event.
I just checked prices and right now they are:
Econo Lodge $98
Comfort Inn $157

The cheapest and probably scariest is only $43, bring your sleeping bag, can of raid, and any other survival things.

RODEWAY INN & SUITES

1733 East Chocolate Avenue, Hershey, PA, 17033, US

Hope to see everyone there, stop by the Unobtanium booth for a FREE gift bag full of good stuff, we are sponsored by Porsche, Recaro, Hagerty, Restoration Design, Stoddard, just to name a few, which means gift bags full of lots of very cool stuff, and it's all FREE!!!!

Just made reservations at The Super 8 Motel at Hershey - $108/night includes hot breakfast and some covered parking, all with pretty good reviews on Trip Advisor.

Checked rates at Knight's Inn - $84.00 a night, breakfast included so long as you like stale Cocoa Puffs served out of a friggen bubble gum vending machine.

I will bring the complete line of wines this year. Last year we lost our cab and zin, grapes were not good and they made a really bad wine......200 gallons pumped to the woods.

We even did a chardonnay for the ladies.....or an early happy hour.

Car is on the lift and getting preped...can't wait. Last years Friday drive was great.

I fully intend to be there this year since I have skipped the last two. However, due to surgery on my left shoulder at 5:00 in the morning, I doubt I will be driving a 914, but not totally ruling it out. Might trailer one up.

As for lodging, Knights Inn is tradition and all you need to make it bearable is a few shots from the gas can!

I'm staying at Americas Best Value Inn $99. Palmyra PA. 6 miles/15 minutes to the park. My wife always reads the reviews and books my trips. I previously stayed at cocoa inn but their reviews have gone way down.

I'm not one of the fun people, I just like a decent room and a good night sleep.

I'm no fun, either. We always bring our kids. We just find a room outside of town on the way.

You'll find that most of the hotels jack of prices and points needed at Hershey. We use Choice Hotels on the road and I tried to use points at the Comfort Inn at Hershey, normally it takes 8000-10000 points, they wanted 25000 for Hershey.

Is it really worth spending $168/night at the Super 8
vs.
$94/night at the Knights Inn?

Trying to figure out where to bring the Gas Can????

Where are the fun people staying? beerchug.gif

Paul - Prices have gone up over the last month. I booked at $108/night in January. Same room now is $154 - one room left according to web site - http://www.hotelsone.com/hershey-hotels-us/super-8-hershey.html? q=rmcnf:1[2,0];dsti:474687;dstt:8;lbl:g_167899936746;frm:9;sort:0_desc;cur:USD;d

Yea...with tax and hotel fees = $168/night bs.gif

Yeah, but it includes hot breakfast. I've seen you two eat, so you'll make up for the room price.

Bring the gas can to a new level...the super 8.....and next time book early. I'll throw in a bottle of my wine to offset your cost.

I thought by now, especially with the warm February, that I'd be taking the car out of hibernation, but with a major winter storm heading this way, it's gonna have to stay garaged. It's all Epstein's fault.

Usually is. biggrin.gif

The problem with the free breakfast is it starts at 6, and I'm gone by 5. Normally that's why I stay at Comfort Inn's, because the breakfast is good, but it doesn't help at Hershey. Sometimes it's strange, like the smell of chlorine with eggs...

See you all in April

I'm staying at Americas Best Value Inn $99. Palmyra PA. 6 miles/15 minutes to the park. My wife always reads the reviews and books my trips. I previously stayed at cocoa inn but their reviews have gone way down.

I'm not one of the fun people, I just like a decent room and a good night sleep.

I am booked there too, but got my room a little cheaper. See you soon.

Looks like I will miss this one. Conflicting plans.

The Knights Inn didn't bother me, Some of the places I've stayed when on hunting trips would make the Bates Motel seem cheery.

Have Fun guys.

My brother was on the road one time and there was a Motel 6, well known, and the little known Motel 5. Well the 5 was a whole $15 cheaper so he and his friend went with the 5. It was a little grimy but the light of day was what really showed how scary it was. When he woke up the sun was shining on the ceiling and he saw what look like lines, but they were slightly dotted and a magenta color. It took a minute to realize it was blood. Years later I was talking to a former junky who knew exactly what the lines were. Apparently a pastime of junkies in crap hotel rooms is while you are laying high on the bed you have a syringe with blood in it, and it's a game to make lines on the ceiling.
Don't stay at crap hotels, just don't.

My buddy needs the following items for his project
See thread titled "914 Score of the Century" in the Garage.

For a 1974 914:

-Complete stock black interior including door panels.
-Windshield
-Rear Spoiler - The short one that bolts to the lid
-Stock seat belts with retractors.

Let me know what you got and how much. We can do the deal(s) at Hershey.

I've never had problem with people laying a couple things down in my spot. I can only bring what fits in a 914 anyway. biggrin.gif

They do not have an informal place where you can open your suitcase and sell Porsche parts. Might not be a bad idea to have a small section like that of table space areas for people thou. Charge a small fee for the privilege and be done.

I have pre sold items in the past and delivered at the show, that is pretty easy to do.

Posted by: Unobtanium-inc Mar 17 2017, 10:02 PM

A Couple years back they started making everyone buy two spots, the result was a lot of guys with a blanket of stuff, and a lot of empty space. So if you're looking for a corner of someone's spot, it shouldn't be hard to find. We get 4 spaces, but I've already commited to three friends who want "just a corner", but trust me there is a lot of space out there.

Hope to see everyone there, we are in Booth C60, look for the Wrights! Lots of FREE stuff.

Yes, The gas can will make it's appearance again! This time at America's Best Value Inn. All are welcome to partake. piratenanner.gif

Super 8 is way to expensive to justify!

Looks like we did a fine job of splitting up the party this year...

Received the email below this morning for those of us that have spots, but haven't received our packets yet. Just a FYI if you didn't receive the email.

QUOTE
We have received several emails asking about vendor packets and space assignments. We are sorry for the delay this year. We had some issues with Vendor parking decals. All the spaces have been assigned based on your registration date. We should have all of the packets in the mail tomorrow or Saturday. Look for your packets in the next week. If you do not have it by Friday next week please email us. Also when trying to contact us please use either the contact information listed on the registration page at motorsport registration (Not the help tab for the site) or the contact information on the club website.
