914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Headlight Relay Question

Posted by: vin man Feb 17 2017, 11:18 AM

The headlight relay on my car is sticking. I need to tap it to get it to work. The part number on my relay is 111 941 583A. This is a 4 pin relay.

When I look up replacements, I find the same part number without the A at the end. And it is 5 prongs. Do I just not use one of the prongs or do I need to find the exact same relay?

I did find a schematic for my existing relay online:

Found this thread on The Samba: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=507400

This is the wiring for the new, 5 pin relay:

It shows that 30 and 56 get jumpered.

However, further down in the thread, it is recommended to not jumper them, but instead run a constant power supply to 30.

QUOTE
The jumper from 30 is a bypass of the high-beam flasher that was removed for USA markets. Just run a wire to relay terminal 30 from an always hot wire (a true 30 terminal), and you gain them back.

QUOTE
Just a note about the addition of another terminal 30 wire as I suggest-- make sure it is a thick wire (like the yellow or white from the relay to the fusesbox. That wire will be taking the high beam current of both sides, so it should be heavy enough to not overload.

You can always upgrade to an electronic version on the cheap...

Thanks for the link and instructions!

I already had the 5 pin relay so I went ahead and wired it in. I ran location 30 to a always hot source on the fuse block.

Edit: Do not run the pin 30 to constant hot. It did not work. Install a jumper between 30 and 56 and it works fine.
