914World.com _ 914World Garage _ GC or GA case?

Posted by: mtndawg Feb 23 2017, 01:54 PM

I have a '75 2.0L car and just took a GA engine out of it. I think GA was used for that year? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I also have a GC case. Is there a big difference between the cases?

Nope - it's a transplant, & your car could've originally been a 1.8 or 2.0, which you won't know without documentation or from a COA.

GA - 73-74

GC - 75-76

PS - the cases were basically the same, but there are some differences - as the GC was detuned & used a Crapalytic Converter for CA, so the 2.0 turned out less HP either way CA (least) or 49 state.

The chart at the link above says 95 vs 88 HP, but IIRC from when I test drove a new 75 & 76 in 1975 before deciding on my 73 2L - the CA detuned 2L was only 86 HP due to the added CAT.

PSS - If you can prove the car was a factory 2.0, then you may want to use the GC motor so that it's close to correct - especially if the case number/motor was originally in that 914 - making it a numbers matching car. If it's a converted 1.8, then you could use either - probably the one in best condition, & you may want to consider making it a 2056 (talk to McMark at Original Customs on that - see his banner ad).

Stay dry up there! blink.gif

Beautiful, thanks Tom.

Take a look at the engine number chart here: http://p914.com/p914_engine.htm

See if the GC case serial number is in the serial number range for a 75 motor, if so it may be the original motor. Only a COA will tell you that for sure. If not, it's a transplant.

I've rebuilt many engines of the ga/gc variety. I don't think there is any difference in the cases. 75/76 heads were different as was the exhaust.

The heads were only different on some of the GC motors, the ones with air injection. Those have the extra holes into the exhaust ports. Other than that, they are the same as the GA heads. And there were GC motors without supplemental air injection; their heads were the same as the GA heads.

The only real difference between the two motors was the terrible horrible no-good exhaust on all of the 75-76 914s.

There were different part numbers used in a lot of the FI components as well, but those differences appear to be relatively subtle. The exhaust is the big difference.

Is it an early 75?
VW is famous for using up stock on hand, so I could easily believe a GA case is OE in an early build '75.

I believe the oil pressure relief circuit is slightly different on GC cases. That's why the casting number is different.
