914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Adding side supports to original seats

Posted by: cwpeden Mar 12 2017, 01:50 PM

I have an old seat that was rotten through the upholstery and thought about glassing some side supports and loops for the lap belt and shoulder straps.

I figured I would first add a steel frame like 3/8 round bar or 1/2in heavy wall tubing then glass over top of that.

Has anyone done that? And what would inspectors think and a DE or Autocross?
Maybe a pic or 2?

Trekkor did this years ago. Here's a trip through time, sponsored by Home Depot. biggrin.gif

Cut sheet aluminum to the bolster shape and rivet in. Then foam over. Added advantage is that it can be tweaked to accommodate 'wider' sitters.
It how it's done at that engine swap place.

Hmm, I searched for bolster and came up empty.

I guess it isn't too much of an issue if the original unchanged seat is under there. I couldn't find anything in PCA Parade regs or SCCA solo regs other than size.

Right on, here we go then.
