My local Porsche mechanic has one of these and was wondering how rare they are. Since he wants to sell it, I posted an ad in the non-914 classified.

I am also visiting VW events in Europe and we begin to see them more. They were never sold here....so not a lot of them around which makes them special and that explains the high price.
In the US rare, in the Brazilian market, many more.
I dig the "VW". rims
I was in the Phillippines in 1976 and saw quite a few over there. They were really pretty nice but I never got to drive one. Seemed to be a bit more modern looking than the 411 and 412, thoughtheyhad type 3 engines if I recall correctly.
I'd imagine parts would be near to impossible to get unless you have a contact in Brazil.
Correction- it was a type 1 engine, not type 3.
I like it, looks alot like 411/412, so it should have a type 4 engine!
I'd be willing to bet there's enough cross over VW parts to keep it going.
It would take a real VW enthusiast to bring the asking price. I'm not saying it's not worth it though.
One in Denver for sale.
Type one motor

The Type 3 engine is a standard type one with suitcase style fan shrouding much like the T4.
Hot set-up on a T3 is to install a T4 engine, I've done several.
Cool looking car, one of our local VW club members has one.
Saw one at local car show last month. Guy claims less than 15 of them in the US.
Guy got all pissy with me when i mentioned to my daughters that their grandmother had a VW that looked similar.
I am sure with that front end, you can do a 6 (prop-blade) conversion that puts an outdrive and prop on the transom and then you can hit the harbor for a cruise.
Our local drunk beach chicks will love that ugly thing if the pretty half is submerged........
