914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Water Cooled 914 Help

Posted by: Mowog4 Mar 13 2017, 08:51 PM

I am getting ready to fire up my Subie powered 914, and am looking for some suggestions of how people have run the water lines for their heater. I am running a Renegade cooling system, with a cowl mounted heater core. I am assuming I will run a 5/8 tees in the upper and lower hoses, thought I would see if anyone had any pictures before I started.
Thanks,
Ed

I ran mine in the long through the original heater tube. Pretty easy install.

About 90% of the conversions run the lines under the car in the reliefs in the floorpan.

He's talking heater not radiator.

I am running Gates hoses under the car back to the engine, I am trying to figure out a clean way of running heater hoses, the heater core is in the cowl.

Ed,

Can you show us a picture of your cowl mounted heater core?

Hey Gary, how are you and one of my all time favorite 914's doing? I am close to driving, this making a living thing really interferes with my toy car projects. Hopefully a couple of weeks

Here are some pics: The AC Evap/heater core mounts in the cowl, the blower motor mounts behind the dash (I am going to have to modify the glove box). The vents will be defroster, factory vents in the lower dash panel, and a couple of vents in the center console. I haven't run freon or hot water through the core yet, but the blower puts out plenty of air in the initial tests. It is the ugly black color because I coated the evap box with lizzard skin thermal coat.

I don't have pics but just put a "T" in my radiator hoses under the gas tank. Shortest way to run them & mine worked great. Until I pulled it to put in A/C dry.gif

Where did you put your AC evaportator?

I like it! Which model kit did you use? I have something similar but its not separate like that, the blower and heater core are in one system. Did you custom make that?

I took an Old Air Products underdash AC/Heat kit and tried to make it work. I even went so far as to notch my Gas Tank and try to put it where the fresh air blower is. My biggest concern was how to pull the air from inside the car to the unit.

I ended up scrapping the unit, pulled the evaporator core out of it and built a 4" X 4"X 15" Aluminum box to house the evaporator. Then I mounted the blower motor on the inside firewall behind the glove box. The theory being it will pull air from the cabin, giving me recirculated air which should be more effecient.

In my quest for slightly better than mediocrity, the blower unit which came on the Old Air Unit was a Spal knock off which put out about 165CFM. I instead went with a genuine SPAL unit 008-A45-02 which put out closer to 300.

It blows into the evap box, which I insulated with Lizzard Skin Ceramic coating, and then routes to the defroster, center console, and side vents. I am expecting to control it from the factory blower, heat and defroster control. There will be a button in the center console which engages the compressor.

I have tried a bunch of combinations,I think this is going to work pretty well.

After a particularly long airline flight where I had way too much time online, I bought this coolant sight glass. I am thinking it would be useful to have it, I am thinking i till put it in line with the upper radiator hose. Make sense?Attached Image
