Hey guys,
A buddy came by and saw our 914-6 build and we started talking 914's. He mentioned a crazy V8 Twin Turbo 1971 914 that he has had for a few years. He brought it by the shop here to do some work to it.
I think some of you may be familiar with it...it is the same car seen on the cover of VW & Porsche in the December 1986 issue. Originally built by Jim Traverse.
The engine is a 355 Small Block with a bunch of goodies and she has been heavily modified throughout. I expected to see more of the car cut out but the rear trunk is 100% intact. You can see the front has been cut to allow for cooling with the roll cage completely integrated.
I know this isn't really a factory car but I thought you guys would enjoy seeing this!
Here are some photos to start:
Can't fit the spoiler in this photo...
Some more photos:
I would like to do some research on these Recaro seats...
Very cool to see this car still around. Such an awesome car! Glad to see the centerlines are gone.
Front section:
As you can see her original modifications are pretty much in place. Not much has been fiddled with.
We are working on getting the information together to do some work to her. I will keep everyone updated here. There is a potential it will be for sale at some point as well.
Interesting draw through setup. Not something you see everyday outside of the VW universe. I believe the early Buick regals had a similar setup.
I like the look of that one. Being it was built way back in 1986 what trans does it run? A 930 flipped or a 915?
Here is the car in 1986 on the cover of VW & Porsche Mag
Here are the build specs:
355 Small Block Chevy with a lot of internal goodies
Hank Bechtloff Crank
Forged Pistons
Edelbrock EFI Intake
17 lbs Wastegates
The transmission is a mismatch of 915 SC components in a case from 74-76 (as noted). We haven't gotten it up in the air yet but when I do I will fill post the type numbers here.
The front suspension is RSR style Bilstein struts with 930 components as well. The rear are adjustable Bilsteins. 911 S brakes up front, -6 in the rear.
I remember that issue.
I still have that issue! This car is why I bought my first 914 back in 1987.
Super cool car.
Thanks for sharing.
That 911 was for sale last year.
I've wanted a twin turbo 914 for 20 years.
Mine will be built using an original(never used) Gale Banks twin turbo system I've had sitting in the original boxes in my garage for 15 years.

Those mirrors are not stock.
What I find interesting is that these Porsches were doing back in the 80's what all the big ponies are bragging about today - 200mph & up.
Neat car, too bad the A-pillar bars fit so poorly the driver's head is endanger. What a riot to drive until you hit the brakes and smack your head against the roll cage.
I bet I have that magazine still.
So I looked at the extra pictures of this car in it current state. It does have a fuel injection in it or with it.
Lot of stuff to work out for a buyer but it does have a lot of good parts. The 915 box is shifted by a linkage. Recaro seats. It is very dirty and do not know how many miles where put on this set up. I believe fiberglass flares.
It is in Kentucky very far from Los Angeles.

Very interested. I will PM you right now. I have cash in hand.
Ive been bugging my dad to pick this up for the past 6 months
If he had one of his toys sold I know he would get it!
These SB Chev engines are repairable at low $$ cash outlay, if its just in need of a basic rebuild. For about $3,500 I built this 350 LT-1 series with a bunch of go fast parts, efi and making approx 400 hp. That 914 would have a cool Fun Factor
Total hotrod. Seems like you would want to cut out the box tube “chassis stiffener” and install traditional long reinforcement. Even with slicks it will be a handful when boost arrives.
