Stopped in the local AutoZone (Hampton VA) today and saw that they had Valvoline VR1 20w50 racing oil (the one w/ ZDDP) on sale for $1.00 per quart. Salesman said they were closing it out--he thought the sale was company-wide.
I haven't seen it that cheap since I bought the 914 in the way-back days (back when oil came in cardboard cans).
Hope this helps!
Steve A-
Thanks!
Snagged a case. 6 bottles each at 2 different stores.
Not much left in the system.
Web search on autozone.com does not return any hits so it maybe true. I'm going to check my local store tomorrow and stock up if this is true nationwide. Thanks for the heads up Bro
Big deal on pelican. When you're filling 10+ quarts, it makes a difference.
My Autozone has it on sale, but only in 15/40 wt. I'm in warm central Cali, would that wt be ok here?
This is for real! I had to stop at two stores but I picked up 12 quarts of 20w-50 this morning for $1 each.
Thanks for the heads up!!!
I was too late, all gone in my area
Thanks. Just picked up 6 quarts. Not even marked as a sale. Almost looks like $1 is the regular price.
Exactly the same Brett. 6 quarts for the price of one.
Your stores must be late to the party. Checked mine and they said started clearancing it out last December. Not even space on the shelves for it.
Git while the gitting is good...
Hit a couple stores here in middle Tennessee, each had it for $1 marked as regular price (to the surprise of one of the managers!). He looked in the system and said he didn't see anything about it being clearanced out, and said he would go ahead and put an order for another 12 and call me when they come in.
It's regular price at $6.50 a quart in so cal at the local auto zone
In so cal it was regular price and not on the shelf, they had two cases in the back
Advance had a similar deal several months ago....I bought all they had. There may be some leftover at a few stores.
None available at my local Autozone.....
Thanks for posting this Steve!
I raided three stores this morning and scored 20 quarts. I'll be in the city early next week and hope to buy some more.
Sweet deal. I love this forum!
Bonus.
Hit 3 Autozone stores, Got 25 Qts Will work for both the teener and the Harley.
Called my buddy and let him know to hit the Autozone stores in his area. He uses it in the racecar.
regular price in bergenfield nj $6.99 ? 4 qts in stock
I was driving from Atlanta to Mississippi last night and hit 6 stores on the way out of town and 4 more once I got to Jackson. Made quite a haul but I've got an engine change in the works so I'll be able to make good use of it.
I hit 3 stores in the South Metrto Denver area and cleaned them out (24 qts.) I checked both the O'Reilly's and Advance Auto stores who said they price-matched other local stores, but when they saw the receipt at $1/qt., did a 180° and said that they couldn't match the price. My retort: "There's a difference between 'you can't' and 'you won't' match the Autozone price.
One of the Autozone store managers confirmed that he had been told that Valvoline is discontinuing this oil, so if that's the case, the other stores should be blowing out their stock before too long. Keep checking!
I spent the last couple days easter egg hunting in the east valley. 139qts.
Deet-da-dee. And I was proud of my 29...
Edit: you'd think this was something actually important, like Heady Topper or Pliney the Elder...
Bought 18 at one of my local Autozone's. The guys were pretty excited I was getting such a good deal.
Gents:
Check back at the stores. It seems that they are still getting deliveries of this oil. After scoring another 12 today, Autozone called me and said they got more in right after I left.
I'm up to 30 qts.
Must be nice, zero quarts available in the St. Louis area
Just picked up 6 more and ordered 24 additional from other stores in the area to be sent to this new store. Only see the 20w-50 so far. Could have got another 24 too, considering it.
Brett
Second Wind- I think they only stocked 20W-50.
Long gone in Chicago area stores...
Maybe as someone suggested, you guys with plenty available stock up and share the wealth...
Anyone have any luck in North Jersey ?
There's a discussion on The Bird's 911 forum where some guys are seriously hoarding, and a lot of others are getting butt-hurt about it...actually really does remind me of the Heady/SoS/Pliney Warz...
I snagged enough for my two cars for a couple years (<4 qts street car, ~9 qts dry-sumped race car) but I found not only 20W-50 out there, but some 50W and 60W as well. So don't just ask them about VV211 20W-5 but ask to search inventory for 50W (VV235) and 60W (VV241). Sadly, Autozone's web site does not return hits for anything VR1- related, so you can't check store inventory online. But find a knowledgeable employee and thy can do a search (I've found many to be surprisingly cooperative, especially once they recognize you've got a pretty cool "scam" going on).
I might run the straight-weight 50/60 in the street car that tends to run hot with low oil pressure in the summer, and run the multi-vis on the race car with the external cooler.
Rory - Since you have 4 and I have 6, I'll give you one when I see you.
Checked out Warwick yesterday and Matamorass, PA today....zilch.
7 qts for 7 bucks on South Hulen tonight
woulda been 11 for 11 but the counter guy was so stoked he said i had to let him get some too! he did find it in the back for me so i was cool with that

I checked my local Autozone in Kirkland, Washington, and the manager told me they had stopped selling it a year ago, then showed me a new additive product they had just received that contained ZDDP. One can treats 5 quarts of motor oil.
6 more tonite on 377S !
whoop-whoop

Still full pop here in San Diego, CA. Sucks.
I'm not getting any love in Port Orchard. In fact, the price went up over $7
The gig may be up in my area. Stopped in at Autozone today for my weekly check on the $1.00 VR1. Clerk said they wouldn't have it at that price anymore and the new bottle was due out next week for $6.79/qt.
I was able to stockpile 51qts sweeping all the Autozone stores in a tri-county area.
Thanks to the original poster for this info. Huge savings! $$$
I mentioned the outlawed VR 1 to my local store and he replied.."it's back". He has two cases waiting for me.....usual price I am sure. Oh well......at least I can change my oil again. Thank you all for your time and energy.

Leave it to California to us on anything related to fuel, tires, motion, etc. /anything fun really... I will have to check in AZ as I need to make a run over there anyway..
https://team.valvoline.com/get/gloves
I have not been able to find any at all around the northern Baltimore suburbs.
I checked our local store in Oakland last night and they were $6.99/Qt.
It's a labeling issue. CA banned "obsolete" oils, they have to meet one standard. Search on bobistheoilguy.com some time early last year; topic was "California bans obsolete oil" or similar.
That's why it's back on the shelves at the old price: all new stock has the correct label. Did you notice all the oils you bought had differing labels? I think Autozone was gifting us a way to clear out their old stock.
I've got problems.. 151 including what I already had stashed.

A HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE ????
Definitely OCD......
Yeah. I was done at 40, plenty enough for the two cars for a couple years. Then I got a call from my local place, all proud they got 20 more for me, so I grabbed those too.
You should check the expiration dates on those so they don't turn into vinegar on you. Bad bad bad for the engine.
And he even takes the time to polish the dinner table BEFORE he lays out all 151 qrts., all turned the same way, all perfectly aligned......
Ok, ok...you win...
I cleaned out my Autozone, too. First the Valvoline then the Autozone brand - $1/qt.
I looked at the local Autozone, but no luck. No VR1 at all.
Got the last 8 quarts in Superior WI. Nothing in Duluth MN. Sold Out
I called all the autozones in my area and they said the sale is over and it was a dollar off, not a quart for a dollar.
Bringing back an old thread, but I just came across VR-1 at my local middle-TN store for $1 again today. Had bought a bunch at this location earlier until the sale ended, guess it's back on. Anyone else still finding this?
Oh no... I thought this was done.
Must be how the people felt who raced to California for the Gold Rush, only to find things already picked clean.
And then, someone whispers "Alaska".

$6.89 qt. at all the ones around here..
sorry, double posted.
Checked a few weeks ago, regular price
I am not sure if I could deal with the separation anxiety
VR1 racing oil apparently cannot be delivered to California (surprise, surprise) via Amazon. What are the other options for a high zinc oil 20W-50 in CA, for a reasonable price under $10/quart? Maybe I now need to smuggle oil across the border?
Man, I miss that sale...has it really been almost three years? I noticed this weekend my closet is getting empty and I've only got one oil change left for the street car with enough for one more fill on the race car (8 quarts).
So, yeah, what's gonna be the value-priced replacement?
The last 15 qts I had are on a stretch of highway in no where Utah..keeping the dust down. ..That was a Heck of a Deal...
I just checked O'Reilly's website. VR1 Racing Formula is listed as $7.99 qt. No special deals indicated.
I found it interesting that they list a Valvoline VR1 Non-California Conventional Motor Oil 10W-30.
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/non-california-5163/oil-16865/motor-oil---racing-19421/1eb4e849cac7/valvoline-non-california-conventional-motor-oil-10w-30-1-quart/race1030/4773413?q=valvoline+vr1&pos=6
I buy VR1 20W50 locally at A&A Auto Parts. A&A is the family of Top Fuel drag racer Joe Amato. Regular price $6.49.
https://www.aaautostores.com/products/Valvoline-VR1-Racing-Oil-VV211-Oil--VLVVV211
Still cheaper on Amazon and includes free shipping.
Pack of six $33.53
I was in Bullhead City, Az this past week. Went to O’Reilys to check. Manager said he was told VR-1 was poisonous to Californians, there by making it non-Ca compliant... I promised I wouldn’t bring it back to Ca...
Clay, nothing political here...
Nice! I wondered if it came in 5qt containers but could never seem to find it. Now we have proof!
Yes, picked up 2 - 5 Gal. containers a couple days ago. I may go back in couple days and see if they still have any more left now that the new year has come and California has dropped all of its wonderful 2020 laws.
