914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Valvoline VR1 racing oil on sale at Autozone

Posted by: anderssj Mar 16 2017, 04:02 PM

Stopped in the local AutoZone (Hampton VA) today and saw that they had Valvoline VR1 20w50 racing oil (the one w/ ZDDP) on sale for $1.00 per quart. Salesman said they were closing it out--he thought the sale was company-wide.

I haven't seen it that cheap since I bought the 914 in the way-back days (back when oil came in cardboard cans).

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

Snagged a case. 6 bottles each at 2 different stores.
Not much left in the system.

Web search on autozone.com does not return any hits so it maybe true. I'm going to check my local store tomorrow and stock up if this is true nationwide. Thanks for the heads up Bro beerchug.gif

Big deal on pelican. When you're filling 10+ quarts, it makes a difference.

Posted by: oakdalecurtis Mar 16 2017, 08:41 PM

My Autozone has it on sale, but only in 15/40 wt. I'm in warm central Cali, would that wt be ok here?

Posted by: mramber Mar 17 2017, 07:47 AM

This is for real! I had to stop at two stores but I picked up 12 quarts of 20w-50 this morning for $1 each.

Thanks for the heads up!!! piratenanner.gif

I was too late, all gone in my area headbang.gif

Posted by: bretth Mar 17 2017, 11:35 AM

Thanks. Just picked up 6 quarts. Not even marked as a sale. Almost looks like $1 is the regular price.

Posted by: Big Len Mar 17 2017, 12:28 PM

Exactly the same Brett. 6 quarts for the price of one.

Posted by: fixer34 Mar 17 2017, 03:16 PM

Your stores must be late to the party. Checked mine and they said started clearancing it out last December. Not even space on the shelves for it.
Git while the gitting is good...

Hit a couple stores here in middle Tennessee, each had it for $1 marked as regular price (to the surprise of one of the managers!). He looked in the system and said he didn't see anything about it being clearanced out, and said he would go ahead and put an order for another 12 and call me when they come in.

It was kind of funny when I got mine this morning. The manager walked by as I was at the checkout and commented "We don't sell oil for $1" Then he double checked everything in the system, and let me have it! I'm not sure if they are getting rid of it, or maybe they have in incorrect price on the SKU in their system.

I went to pick up some VR1 earlier today but my local autozone was all sold out.
The manager told me that they will no longer be selling and no longer stocking it.
He made it sound like it's company wide too. I guess that's why it's so cheap.

Posted by: Steve Mar 17 2017, 06:03 PM

In so cal it was regular price and not on the shelf, they had two cases in the back

Advance had a similar deal several months ago....I bought all they had. There may be some leftover at a few stores.

Thanks for posting this Steve!

I raided three stores this morning and scored 20 quarts. I'll be in the city early next week and hope to buy some more.

regular price in bergenfield nj $6.99 ? 4 qts in stock

Posted by: db9146 Mar 18 2017, 03:33 PM

I was driving from Atlanta to Mississippi last night and hit 6 stores on the way out of town and 4 more once I got to Jackson. Made quite a haul but I've got an engine change in the works so I'll be able to make good use of it.

Posted by: Coloradocurt Mar 18 2017, 04:13 PM

I hit 3 stores in the South Metrto Denver area and cleaned them out (24 qts.) I checked both the O'Reilly's and Advance Auto stores who said they price-matched other local stores, but when they saw the receipt at $1/qt., did a 180° and said that they couldn't match the price. My retort: "There's a difference between 'you can't' and 'you won't' match the Autozone price.
One of the Autozone store managers confirmed that he had been told that Valvoline is discontinuing this oil, so if that's the case, the other stores should be blowing out their stock before too long. Keep checking!

Posted by: Travis Neff Mar 18 2017, 07:38 PM

I spent the last couple days easter egg hunting in the east valley. 139qts.

Bought 18 at one of my local Autozone's. The guys were pretty excited I was getting such a good deal.

Posted by: saigon71 Mar 19 2017, 05:34 PM

Gents:

Check back at the stores. It seems that they are still getting deliveries of this oil. After scoring another 12 today, Autozone called me and said they got more in right after I left.

I'm up to 30 qts. smile.gif

Just picked up 6 more and ordered 24 additional from other stores in the area to be sent to this new store. Only see the 20w-50 so far. Could have got another 24 too, considering it.

Anyone have any luck in North Jersey ?

Posted by: GregAmy Mar 20 2017, 06:17 PM

There's a discussion on The Bird's 911 forum where some guys are seriously hoarding, and a lot of others are getting butt-hurt about it...actually really does remind me of the Heady/SoS/Pliney Warz...

I snagged enough for my two cars for a couple years (<4 qts street car, ~9 qts dry-sumped race car) but I found not only 20W-50 out there, but some 50W and 60W as well. So don't just ask them about VV211 20W-5 but ask to search inventory for 50W (VV235) and 60W (VV241). Sadly, Autozone's web site does not return hits for anything VR1- related, so you can't check store inventory online. But find a knowledgeable employee and thy can do a search (I've found many to be surprisingly cooperative, especially once they recognize you've got a pretty cool "scam" going on).

I might run the straight-weight 50/60 in the street car that tends to run hot with low oil pressure in the summer, and run the multi-vis on the race car with the external cooler.

Posted by: Big Len Mar 20 2017, 07:43 PM

Rory - Since you have 4 and I have 6, I'll give you one when I see you.

Checked out Warwick yesterday and Matamorass, PA today....zilch.

The gig may be up in my area. Stopped in at Autozone today for my weekly check on the $1.00 VR1. Clerk said they wouldn't have it at that price anymore and the new bottle was due out next week for $6.79/qt.

I was able to stockpile 51qts sweeping all the Autozone stores in a tri-county area.

Thanks to the original poster for this info. Huge savings! $$$ beerchug.gif

So where is the evidence that California has banned high Zinc addittive oil.

Internet hoax or misinformation?

Posted by: GregAmy Mar 28 2017, 02:25 PM

It's a labeling issue. CA banned "obsolete" oils, they have to meet one standard. Search on bobistheoilguy.com some time early last year; topic was "California bans obsolete oil" or similar.

That's why it's back on the shelves at the old price: all new stock has the correct label. Did you notice all the oils you bought had differing labels? I think Autozone was gifting us a way to clear out their old stock.

Yes that.s what I thought. It is the API designation if obsoleted.

So as long as the designation is compatable with an active API designation it can be sold in CA is my understanding.

So the the stores could have the SA designation and still viable oil just a labeling issue.

Yeah. I was done at 40, plenty enough for the two cars for a couple years. Then I got a call from my local place, all proud they got 20 more for me, so I grabbed those too.

You should check the expiration dates on those so they don't turn into vinegar on you. Bad bad bad for the engine.

That's not the half of it. You know when you walk in the front door of those stores they make that swish sound? Well if the sound doesn't sound just right you have to try going through the door again and again until it sounds just right. Same sound of satisfaction when you leave out the exit door.

Then I get home and lay out all that oil on the table and every time I leave the room someone turns one of the bottles around just to see me freak out. Then I hear some crap that I dont have an even number of oil bottles and I should do something about it because it may not be just right.

Then I go out and change my oil and so now I don't have as much and to top it off someone on pelican got 240qts of oil and now I feel like I don't have enough. laugh.gif

VR1 racing oil apparently cannot be delivered to California (surprise, surprise) via Amazon. What are the other options for a high zinc oil 20W-50 in CA, for a reasonable price under $10/quart? Maybe I now need to smuggle oil across the border?

Man, I miss that sale...has it really been almost three years? I noticed this weekend my closet is getting empty and I've only got one oil change left for the street car with enough for one more fill on the race car (8 quarts).

So, yeah, what's gonna be the value-priced replacement?
