I have a conversion (74) that is ready to go to new home. Trying to install the spare but have issue with fit.
Car has 16 X 6 Fuchs but tire is too large to lie correctly in the stock location in the front trunk. Has anyone had specific experience and if so what size tire will allow it to fit with board on top as it is suppose to be. ...or will 16 just not fit?

Could you get a collapsible tire for it? Used by Porsche for many years now.

What size is the tire? Could install it in the rear trunk if it will clear the targa top.

I want the car to have real spare ....That is question I have is what size tire will make it fit ? Anyone ?

I have a 996 16 inch spare in the front compartment. I have it fully inflated so no compressor need. I will check the size of the tire and get back with information and a picture.

I purchased a 14 inch 5-lug Fuch from either Gerald or Camp914 for $100 shipped. Put a 195/60/14 tire on it and it fits nicely.

I use a five lug 15" 911 steel spare from an 70's or 80's car.

You need to carry a set of steel wheel lugs.

Obviously it'll be the outside diameter of the tire that will determine the fit in the front trunk, so that's the measurement to look at. If nothing else, perhaps purchasing a low profile 16" tire to mount as a spare may be the easiest solution.

If all else fails, try a 165-width tire. Might be hard to find a 25" diameter for such a skinny tire on a 16, though. Tire Rack doesn't carry any of those. They do seem to list something in 185/60-16, which is close to a 25" overall diameter and is at least narrower than most tires you can find on 16s.

Have you tried measuring the space available in the spare tire well? That would at least give you an idea of what kind of size you need to look for.

You could go to a scrapyard and see if they have a 16" temporary spare.
PITA to get on a 6" rim but do-able
Tirerack sells a T125/80D16 for $68. that would be just under 24"

The thing is a Steel wheel on a inflate a spare weighs a shit load I went with a 6 inch 15 Inch Fuchs wheel and inflate spare that I got from Bruce Stone. Inflate a tire pump from Porsche. Same set up I saw on Blue/Cork 916 that was in San Francisco before it went to Germany.

Good to hear about the Boxster spare fitting, but you have to remember that a Boxster wheel has a very different offset. Does it fit on the 914 with a spacer?

Also curious if it fits on our cars without spacers. Have you tried it on all 4 corners?

I was at my shop today and took a picture of my spare to go in my 914-V8 car, I have the same set up for my 914-6 because I have an oil cooler in the front like a 916,

Not clean but I thought I would show you for an option on this thought. This is around 20 inches tall.

I have the early 911 16" space saver spare. There's paranoia out there that the rubber is old and unsafe. I inflated mine and it worked fine, but curious if you can replace the rubber.

I never thought of that. My 86 Carrera has a space saver but I do not know what the size is. I would not worry if the rubber is bad as if you use it would not be for that long. If old rubber on spares from the 80s or 90s go bad there are a lot of people in trouble, as I do not know of anyone that changes out there space saver. You are only to use your spare for a very short time and at slow speed. When I had a blow out on my Carrera on a tire that looked new but was 15 years old, I changed out the tires but still call for a flat bed truck. That is what AAA is for. We may get into a big conversation on what is too old for tires.

Strange, i never had an issue fitting a 16x6 with a real tire on it. I made sure to do a smaller aspect ratio and width. I can check to see what size I used.

edit:
It is 195/50/16, total diameter is 23.5"

A spacesaver set I have for the 356, still with spacesaver tires is:
165/15, total diameter 19.75" deflated.

I agree, AAA is what is used for if I ever got a flat these days anyway.
Going with a front cooler on my /6 conversion will make a front spare not happen anyway.

It looks like the space savers are for 15” wheels I can not find any for 16” The trick when mounting then is you have to fill them up with air until l they expand and then let the air out. They stay in the extended position and after the tire people mount them you hit the center of the tread with a bat hard and the tire springs back down. There must be some steel inside to make it spring out. Sounds weird but I got the tip from someone on this board a long time ago. There must be 17s but 15 is what is on older cars.

I opted for a Boxster spare, and although I don't recall the actual size, it's narrow enough so that it fits with no issues. It'll probably never be used, but if so, only for whatever brief period needed, so appearance isn't an issue. Plus it's considerably less weight (and cost) than the typical 911 SpaceSaver spare.

Bingo, a boxster/996 spare is a great option. I think there are some 993/964/968 spares in 16" too. Best to get one of the above since they are alumn wheels.

My 951 15" are alumn too and VERY light!

Coloradocurt: What's the overall diameter of that wheel/tire combo. It may be small enough to mount flat on the floor and put a cooler and wheel-well exit shroud in-front and around it!

OK here is the pictures of my 16 inch spare. 16 x 5 1/2 alloy rim with a 165/70 16 tire. 965.362.130.00 part number on rim. Fully inflated it is the same as the stock spare tire only with 16 rim.

I can sell my 15in Fuchs for the spare for $300. and also sell the perfect factory inflator for $400. Get the Boxster spare for $200. And pocket the $500. And have less mess in the trunk.

My Michelin 185/70 - 15 XWX on a 5.5 x 15 five bolt wheel fits perfect in the front trunk.
