Can anyone help me out. I am having issues shifting into first gear. I had the bushing replaced and it really helped with the slack in the shifter but still have trouble getting into first gear. All other gears work smoothly. The clutch cable was also adjusted, but no luck.
Any advise, I don't want to have the transmission rebuilt if I don't have to. I have a 72 with a tail shifter.
It will go into first once in awhile but grinds. Sounds like I need transmission work. Should I try to source a rebuilt one or get it rebuilt? Do you know how much rebuilding this transmission should cost. Want to make sure I am getting the right pricing.
I am in RI if anyone has a rebuilt or good used tail shifter.
Thanks for the help.
Haynes manual and online sources have an adjustment procedure for the shifter. Find it and do that first before dissecting your transmission.
Take the 5th syncro and flip it into the 1st spot!
We had that happen in our old car. I agree with all above. First gear hangs out in the tail cover so I think we removed the muffler and tail cover and removed first gear with the trans in the car. Replaced synchro, brake pucks and engagement dogs on the bench. Reinstalled and no more grinding! We ran it this way for quite a while until we took it apart to replace 3rd, 4 th, and 5th with shorter gears and rebuilt 2nd while we were at it. That was then the smoothest shifting Porsche trans I had ever shifted.
Sounds like 1st gear slider and sycro, always the first to go. Its on the tale, easy to get at.....you could send off to Dr. Evil for a rebuild, he's got all the parts and price is reasonable. Best, Mark
