Hey is the german "B Looking " symbol (es-set or something--my german teacher was not good at all) that substitutes the double s...is that gone or what? I heard they were phasing it out...and by they i mean the gov't.......? whats up here....i liked the es-set personally.

there used to be another symbol for the ess-et... it looked a lot like 2 lightning bolts... it was phased out and the "B" looking character was introduced after WWII... if you know history, you can guess why... wink.gif

if not, Alfie can explain it, I'm sure it's in his pamphlet... finger.gif

the esset is different than 2 'S's... as already noted...

I wasn't making a swipe at you... or germany, sorry... mainly a swipe at Alfie..

supposedly, during "that time" Hitler had the "B" (sorry, I don't know how to make the proper esset) looking symbol replaced with the 2 lightning bolts... mainly for "official" business... the typewriters for nazi germany even had the special keys replaced, removing the "B" as I recall... later germany, of course, cut all ties with that...

this is how my german prof in college explained it, but she wasn't a history prof, just German... if I am wrong, I'm very sorry

Greetings to you too, From Texas... sorry, my German is more rusty than my car... smile.gif

I got greetings, but I had to look up air-cooled... I knew it was air-something though, do I get partial credit wink.gif

@ Tech we had "german" parties as part of our class, we'd all get together, drink hefeweisen, eat rinds-roladen (sp) and speak german... speaking it and being around people speaking it is the only way to learn... but 5 years without practice, you are like me, you can pick out 1-2 words and hope you get a sentance close...

Hi everybody,

Spass is definitely incorrect, as the vowel preceding -ss is long.

Must be Spaß.

Since the orthography reform many people think that they have simplified the matter and that everything can be spelled with -ss or that -ss and are interchangeable. That is simply not true. The simplification consists rather in a clear and concise usage rule, i.e. the one I have given above.

Regards,

Louis
