914World.com _ 914World Garage _ which steel GT flares?

Posted by: Seelenfan Mar 27 2017, 11:35 PM

I am wanting to buy Steel GT flares and rocker panels. (repros). I have found the following vendors. I would like to know who has purchased and which might fit better than another. Also are there any other vendors I should consider

All made by AA so pick the cheapest shipped price.

Well covered on here before ,the factory ones are NLA and I think the only supplier that makes them is the good doctor ??,not the real Porsche doctor just someone who has self appointed that name.
For fear of being flamed by the small amount of happy customers I will not name the firm as A#to At%lan@ta lol-2.gif lol-2.gif lol-2.gif lol-2.gif .
Please ask if they have stock if not wait till they do without pitching the $$$ first, ask me how I know.

Correct and those are auto Atlanta's as well. I think RD either stamps them for them or buys from AA.. I know I had talked with them about it last time I spoke with them.

The above posters are correct. Only one reproduction flare is made and sold to all the vendors. Sierra madre is also the list. Like they said, just find the cheapest shipped. Or pick restoration design because they do so much to support our cars smile.gif

You can also place a WTB and sometimes pick up a set from someone on this site who purchased durring the group buy but decided not to flare.

I would try the WTB first. They come up for sale occasionally.

Restoration Design...because you know you need some other parts. biggrin.gif

I'd say 80% of RDs parts are made by them in-house, but yes the GT flares are made for AA.
I don't know who George uses to make the GT flares, but it's not RD.

I organized the group buy the several years ago and in speaking with George my understanding was that he owned a set of stamping dies and he kept them at a stamping shop nearby that would run his production when enough order quantity built up. Like both the Mark's say, they all come from AA. Ive seen some of the guys from the group buy put them up for sale when their project changes direction. Ive still got mine.

I guess what everyone is wondering, does RH stamp these too?

I'd much rather buy from them. first.gif

I think only AA and the Porsche factory have the necessary dies. I wonder if Porsche Classics may ever produce some again, but with such a small potential market I'd be surprised if they would bother.

The factory pieces are not so great. I've never installed a set of repros, but I can tell you that the last two sets of factory flairs that I installed required a lot of additional work to fit well

AA's flares are not perfect as well, but not bad, I think they are a bit better than factory. The metal at the edges, where it welds to the body, are a bit wavy and you have to trim it back a bit. Light coat of bondo fixes the rest as long as your welding is good.

I've had them in my hands but I've never install a set.

I got my flares back when George made the first run of them, 2008 or so. He said that the tooling was exact for the right and left of car and that the factory’s where not as good as for as the fit goes. I have heard from guys that say all the cars fit a little different.

I used factory flares and the fit was real good. Edges were straight and not wavy at all.

Speaking of flares,..has anyone ever installed a Flare that is half the width of the factory version,.,I wonder what something like that would look like,.???

Do a search for rabbit flares, look at tangerine's flares, also pulled fenders and there was a thread on how to hammer out your own flares.

That brings to mind a car that Chris/effutuo101 had, or helped work on. The orange one. Flares were shaped similar to factory, but shallower. It's been too long, can't remember much else about it, but maybe someone has a pic or recalls a thread?

EDIT: Found the thread I was thinking of:

The AA flares are really nice, if a bit spendy. There is a video somewhere about how they are stamped out. I have a set, and will eventually add them to my car.

Chris Foley makes some nice ones. I have no experience with them. I do like their Racing Signature flares.
