914World.com _ 914World Garage _ NOS Parts Score

Posted by: Luke M Apr 6 2017, 01:12 PM

In my search of some NOS sheet metal parts for my 914-6 I came across these...
I've never seen these around so I couldn't pass it up.
I'll reach out to RD about these as some have wanted these reproduced in the past.

Way cool .....
They would be great formed, rather than hammered out.
Thanks for snatching those up.

I was scratching my head then I realized what I was looking at !
That is very cool. Never seen these before except on the chassis

Luke,

I do have this part as well. And BTW, there is a smaller piece that is welded on the suspension console beside these parts. That of which I have as well. Hopefully I can get them scanned in the next couple months and start designing a tool to stamp these.

Keep looking for the NOS! There's tons out there still.

I'm still scratching my head .... errr idea.gif .... even though I do see it is formed for lines to run by them. huh.gif

Hey Luke - There is a Parts Vault forum on here, where it would be most helpful for members if you can post these pix of them & the p/n's, etc. It has a specific format of how the mods/admins want them posted, so read their instructions at that forum.

TIA for that & for contacting RD! beerchug.gif

OK, the old guy has no idea where they go. Enlighten me.

Posted by: BeatNavy Apr 6 2017, 05:53 PM

I believe they are the pieces that tie the inner and outer suspension consoles together. On the car they kind of just look like a bunch of metal going across the upper wheelhouse piece.

Cary made some templates for me, and I was going to hammer out some of my own. But if RD has them almost ready to sell, I'm on board.

Posted by: Unobtanium-inc Apr 6 2017, 06:05 PM

At Unobtanium we have a standing rule to offer all our NOS metal to RD first, most times they take it. Everyone should do this, it benefits the whole community to have a company with such high quality produce metal the right way and make it available. So if you have an NOS piece in the corner of your garage, pass it on to RD, everyone wins!
Here was one of the last piles we sent them.

You are correct..

I'll measure the thickness of the metal in the morning.

Posted by: peteyd Apr 7 2017, 06:53 AM

These are NOS, I just sand blasted and painted them because they weren't that pretty.

Its hard to tell if this is the part# from PET. The drawings are not exact and I can not find any other documentation.

I still need the r/r inner wheel housing. Most of these parts are going into my 6.

I need the r/r q-panel for my 6 so I'll need to keep that.

I ended up fixing my factory 6 with the RD section after I couldn't locate one of these unicorns. I just knew that when I fixed it they would show up.. It looks rough but it's solid. I'll have it blasted and epoxy painted in the spring. And there you have it. In my NOS pile it goes.

I sold a nos 2.0 TPS to a member here about a year ago. We both felt $200 was fair.

I gave a nos center dash vent for an early car to Eric Shea for a PMB build. Didn’t charge him. He’s been good to me so payback…

Bought a nos front targa seal. The large 3 piece one that goes around the front windshield frame. That used to be a “holy grail” item before repros were made.

I do have this part as well. And BTW, there is a smaller piece that is welded on the suspension console beside these parts. That of which I have as well. Hopefully I can get them scanned in the next couple months and start designing a tool to stamp these.

Keep looking for the NOS! There's tons out there still.

Pete

Do you sell any of the individual pressings that are welded together to form the suspension console? Does anyone? Mine rusted out in the middle lower part that joins the two sides. KevinW has got me covered with a used one, but I bet there are people who could use these parts.

thats pretty f$%^ing amazing you could get those carpet pieces.
and more amazing that some bits are still there. for special people and special cars.
well done to owner and supplier. beerchug.gif

i happen to know that brown/white flecked carpet is made of unobtanium.
i got the last 7m of the roll from germany back in about 94 to do my right hand drive version. that was through special contacts, via an old mate of mine with the hamilton's 914/6 who was on speaking terms to alan hamilton (the old aus distributor with special factory contacts and who had a secret soft spot for 914s and 914 owners). i got the royal treatment at the spare parts counter in melbourne and got what was left. it wasn't quite enough to do the whole car so i had to think carefully about which bit i would re-use. from the original carpet. it turned out to be the left wheel fender well piece.

now you will have to look after it @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=10753 because that brown carpet can't take UV.
it just fades to that cream colour under exposure to the sun. smile.gif sad.gif

you are going to have to unbolt the steering column to get that passenger firewall piece in ......but its worth it.

Yep! Fades really badly - one person thought my center tunnel piece was beige, but the portions under the floor carpet and console show the true story. Fortunately, it doesn't see direct sunlight very often/much these days.

Thanks dry.gif for the confirmation about the bulkhead piece - looked at it last night and came to the same conclusion though not stated in any of the "instructions" I could find. Scary....

When looking under there last night I also discovered the "drivers bulkhead/pedalboard" piece. Starting to track one of those down though fortunately the one there is in fairly good shape, not very faded, and barely noticeable (I hadn't noticed it in almost 50 years!). We'll see - maybe just a good shampooing and fabric conditioner....

There was another roll of it, sold a year or so ago, but haven't been able to track down who bought it. confused24.gif

I'm trying to document the precise part numbers for each piece, but some of the tags are quite faded and not sure if one was in its original bag.

I recently purchased a NOS front trunk seal on ebay.
I discovered an anomaly that others may help to confirm.
The defining feature of OEM seals is the molded one piece rear corners that are glued
to the running material of the side pieces.
Those rear corners are marked L and R and they are different in detail from each
other.
The curious thing is that when installed the side marked R ends up on the
drivers side and the L piece on the passenger side.
Convention is that L and R are in determined by driving direction.
Anyone ?

Speculation as an engineer that spent a lot of time in the automotive manufacturing world.

The R and the L are probably error proofing for assembly and have no relation to car position.

That R and L mark would be to keep parts identified before they were bonded to the side seals. R and L probably referenced the assembly fixture and/or the moulds.

your front trunk seal is installed correctly.

R is on the left hand side (driver side).

the convention for the trunk seal must be as you face the trunk from the front?

the convention i agree most certainly applies when talking about separate parts that are on opposite sides of car. ie where there is a L and R version of the part.

i wouldn't go so far as to say that logic applies to the trunk seal.
its a one piece part, not a left and right version part.

the trunk seal i can assure you has never been out of my car since 89.
i can't vouch for it 1974 to 1989 and first owner.
but the car is highly original.
there is a factory build sticker and stamp up near the latch on the lid to go with seal.
and the car has never been repainted.

there are other members who have not meddled with their cars.
they could take a look at their seals.
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=10753 has a very original 74. see what his seal is like.

EDIT
i don't want to meddle with the seal on mine too much.
but rolling a piece that is loose at the front, i can't really see how it can go on the other way. its an asymmetric profile and it would tend to want to poke out along the edges of the trunk lid. it seems to be designed to fill the body channel and to come out to edge of panel gap on trunk lid.

i got curious to take a look at factory manual.
i could not find anything in there easily.
but PET shows this.

Attached Image

assuming that is an up and down orientation shown in PET.
and it appears to be.
seal in my car agrees.

Attached Image

the only outcome is L is on the right of the car and R is on the left of the car (in the direction of driving). to get it the other way around this asymmetrical seal will not agree with PET and if its an OEM one i believe its edge will be sticking out from underside of front lid when closed. so think the L and R mean as you look down on the seal installing it with the front trunk open.

would not be the first time we have found inductive logic does not work when it comes to 914s. for instance a 1974 EC-A engine is california. But in 1975 an EC-b engine is california.
